    The reason why Bangor is “shaggy”, as you say, is because of decades of underinvestment by the UK government. Working class towns and cities like Bangor were bustling before deindustrialisation. Since then, they’ve been an afterthought. Please don’t blame the city for something that is out of its own control.

    I moved to Bangor about 3 weeks ago and I honestly love it, the people here are very friendly. There's a lot off things to do and is not as much as a tourist town compared too Llandudno so the roads aren't busy which is good but a beautiful place to visit with a ton of history so if you haven't been I'd recommend it.

    My wife and I visited the Bangor area last year and found a very nice place. The people where friendly, the weather was what we expected (actually a little better) and I found it no more run down than any other place. For the hills, I walked that hill that you speak of and if it was that much of a struggle, you really need to exercise more.

      +Tom Angle hey Tom!
      I am happy you liked Bangor :) I like it too, but I made this video as Bangor is being presented as too perfect of a place for new arriving students.
      The people are friendly, I completely agree.
      As for the "run down" part, I judge from my own travel experience. I have obviously seen places worse, though, I've seen more that are cleaner.
      Visiting a place is different from living there. As a Russian, I'm not saying that the rain is getting on my nerves, I am pointing out the fact that it doesn't snow during winter.
      I have interviewed and added the footage of students walking up Lon Pobty on purpose, asking them what they think of the hill and they support my idea. In that case it's a problem of our generation and we all need exercise :)

    Everywhere in Wales is hills or mountains (look at a map), you get used to it and its good exercise. Wales rarely gets snow because of where the country is situated on the map and this gives us a different climate to the rest of Europe (Just like the Faeros). Also student towns are always a mess and its because of the students. Everywhere there are students (no matter which country) there is litter.

Also polluted, too much traffic and a city council that has a “THEY” as a mayor and a county council that has zero regard of human life.

    as someone who lives near bangor thinking of attending there, I despise the thought of the hill up past the arcade 😂 but your videos are very informative, thank you! A downside to me is the hill, don't you feel isolated up on a hill away from the hustle and bustle?

      "jokes on you" I would say if I knew you better :)
      I live down in the valley now, I got a bit tired of walking up and down every day. Besides, living in private accommodation has it's own benefits, like permission to own pets!
      Actually, the way from St. Mary's to High Street in Bangor is only about 7-8 minutes, so no, I didn't feel isolated when I used to live there. As for shopping, I normally got together with my flat or some of my friends and we organised ASDA deliveries. They delivery costed us £1 and we had all of our food for the week up the hill without breaking a sweat (you really don't want to be carrying 8 pints of milk, 2 litres of juice and canned tomatoes up the hill).
      Thank you for watching my videos, Courtney!

      It also really depends on what you will be studying. As I am a student of the School of Biological Sciences, most of my classes take place in lower Bangor, so it makes sense for me to stay in the valley. While, if you study Music or Business, for example, you will have to go up to Higher Bangor (the other hill).
      And thank you for your kind words!

Again, I can only speak for my course of BSc Zoology with Herpetology. The overall experience seems good, now that I look back on the experience. Despite the fact that the town is very small, the majority of students entertain themselves by going to pubs and travelling to other cities is expensive, the positive things outweigh the negative. I have met great people there and the uni staff has always been very professional, especially the lecturers! There will always be a special place for Bangor in my memories 👍

      Yeah, this university is awesome. I mean, it's probably nothing like an American college, but it's one of a kind. There are a ton of places to go from Bangor out of the city, there is the sea and it never gets too hot :) Though, the fact that it has so many differences with other universities in larger cities is what might put you off about Bangor.
      The education here is great. Obviously, it all depends on what you study, but I know that all biological and environmental sciences, law and psychology are really good here. Don't really know about the rest, sorry.
      Anyways, the U.K. is super different so coming here is a strange (in a good way) experience :)

    Hi George! Thank you for the advice, but I think I'm still planning on applying. I'm also an international student (Belgian living in Thailand) and I'm planning on studying environmental science so hopefully I can try my best to reduce the waste. I'm currently the recycling project leader at my school's student environmental committee (it's a really big school so trying to get stuff done needs a million approvals, but we still manage to do it). What do you think are the chances that I will be able to make a difference? Thanks for letting me know :)

    • @georgeschnipper
      @georgeschnipper  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +flotheunicorn hi there! I'll try to stick to the topic of Bangor with this question. There is a lot of qualified scientists in this university who can help you reach your goal if you are so determined to reach it. Besides, there are also communities and societies run by the university that you can join where you are invited to talks and seminars on topics that interest you. Scientists who also work with the problem of waste reduction from around the UK may also attend the talks in your societies, for example, and you can build a "web" of connections with useful people for your goal.
      I hope I'll see you here next year then, good luck! :)

    hi, just wanted to ask apart from the tuition fee how much is the cost of living and other travelling expenses approximately.

    • @georgeschnipper
      @georgeschnipper  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey Udai :)
      Yeah, apart from tuition fees you do have quite a bit to pay for as a student.
      As for living, the university itself offers you to live on the campus in the University Halls. If you click the following link, pick a hall you would like to check the price and have a look at "Letting period and cost".
      The other option is to live in private accommodation. To do that, you will have to do your own research on where you would want to live.
      Last year I lived in Uni Halls, this year I am moving into private accommodation. The price in slightly lower for private accommodation in many cases and varies between approximately £80-120 per week (obviously depending on the state of the accommodation, room type, number of housemates, facilities (electricity, gas, wi-fi, etc.) included.
      You can do a quick google search "Bangor Wales housing" or something similar and the contact the company you prefer. Personally my housemates and I went to the first housing agent we saw and they showed us some houses we could then pick from. I am not promoting them in any way, but they were nice and helped us out: Dafydd Hardy.
      University Halls: www.bangor.ac.uk/accommodation/halls/info.php.en
      As for travelling, it's expensive to travel around the UK by train. If you are lucky, you have a railcard and you buy in advance, you can get a Bangor-London-Bangor ticket for £40. If you don't have a railcard and you buy a normal ticket, the price can jump to £120 and higher.
      Where to buy the railcard: www.16-25railcard.co.uk
      Where to buy the tickets: www.thetrainline.com
      I would also assume that you would want to eat in Bangor. That is normally one of the most expensive parts of living :)
      It varies from person to person: some people survive on £15 per month on food, others spend £15 per day.
      Those are the priciest categories. You then have such things as hobbies to spend money on, eating out, mail, personal little treats, but you will figure that out yourself automatically when you arrive :)
      Some advice:
      Make sure to track your expenses by category. That way you will see where your money goes.
      Account for all the things you need to buy when you move in (plates, cutlery, towels, shampoo, food, taxi rides from the supermarket and a ton more) so always have some spare cash.

    Hi, I was at Bangor over a decade ago and agree with everything you say.. However:
    Hills.. My love of mountain hiking was developed from living in Bangor and with such easy access to snowdonia. I admit, the city improved due to having a car in my second and third year!
    Weather.. Bangor microclimate is special.. snow in June or horizontal rain.. basically get yourself down to a good outdoor clothing store and wear correct clothes. as the Norwegians say.. there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad choice of clothing.
    Shabbynes.. Yes i have no positive spin here.. other than the city has improved MUCH since I was there.. eg. when I was first there, the St. Mary's halls was officially condemned and were to be demolished. but we were forced to stay for the rest of the year none the less.
    I strongly recommend you to take visits into the mountains, Llanberis, Trefan etc.. then Anglesey.. such as Beaumaris and Menai.. Bangor is VASTLY more than the city itself.

    I'm currently living in bangor and the state is really sad
    Even worse with covid
    Like every shop is closing
    The highstreet looks like a total ugly and unkept mess as if we were in some sort of poor neighborhood or something (who would think it's the most important part...)
    Before covid we had issues with drunks (and druggies!) And we even had a bunch of kids playing and broke our entry doorway (we couldn't get out or close it afterwards!)

    I like some of the shots of Bangor. Some cool close ups at night. Too me some of them are cliche shots of Bangor but like you said the edit was done quickly, so a top tip is too find the 'euro car park' which is in town and then go to the top floor :- you can nearly get a 360 degree shot of Bangor. I strongly disagree with the 3rd reason, yes its worn down but at least it ain't like London or trying to be e.g. The more glam and pretty some streets change in London the more segregation and more boring it becomes. Bangor people are cool with different characters and communities, and ye....you guys(students) contribute to the culture. P.s note for all students. Never walk around with a sausage roll in the high street, a swarm of mordor seaguls will be waiting.

    Points 1 & 2 are pretty ridiculous. It's north Wales, of course it's hilly and the weather is often wet / cold / windy!
    Point 3 is valid, especially today. Last week I spent a week in Bangor and the surrounding area, my first visit back after graduating in 2016, and was shocked at how much the place has deteriorated. The COVID-19 restrictions have truly decimated Bangor.
    Menai Bridge and Anglesey in general are still beautiful though and worth spending time in. But Bangor is a depressing husk of what it once was.

  • @biggishdantan

    Hi. I find your point about the city being run down and litter strewn interesting. It irritates me every day when I take a walk and see rubbish laying around and bins left to overflow for days on end. It seems the the local authority and some residents don't really care about the appearance of the place and it's so frustrating. I walk down the high street and estimate 20 to 30 prices of chewing gum per square metre. This night street was recently resurfaced and now it looks worse than ever. It's simply down to the ineptitude of the local council.

    • @georgeschnipper
      @georgeschnipper  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +biggishdantan I completely agree! It's something people tend to ignore and "close their eyes upon". I don't say that I hate it, but the fact that nothing is done about it irritates me as well.

  • @rebekahjulie7047
    @rebekahjulie7047 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    can i just say that ive been walking up these hills since i was 5 they aren't that bad. and all the rubbish is because its windy and the council have had a tone of cuts and cleaning it up was one of them. and the weather is not terrible its just a bit windy but if you go to any city wich is next to the sea its going to be if your in wales, scotland or england its just something you have to get used to. im no hating honestly its just the way things are there and honestly most of the rubbish is from students. and a genuine suggestion with the cold is to invest in a good wind proof rain coat from trespass in town its one of the ways the locals survive. xx

    • @georgeschnipper
      @georgeschnipper  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Rebekah :)
      I made this video from my own personal viewpoint. Obviously when you have lived in the area for years- you get used to it. Frankly, the longer I am in Bangor, the more I like it :)
      I moved from a place where the highest point in the whole city is ~50m above sea level, a place with no hills and definitely no mountains. Hence, climbing in Bangor is somewhat unusual to me.
      Secondly, I used to live in Russia. Of course I will be surprised by the lack of snow! When it starts snowing in November and melts in April- you get used to the half year of actual winter.
      And I understand that there are a lot of students who litter. But students are also the ones who bring the money into Bangor. I would really appreciate cleaner streets and a tidy city.

    • @rebekahjulie7047
      @rebekahjulie7047 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it would be amazing if the streets were cleaner but the council are tight for money which is a shame. students are one of the sources of money but there are other sources too. i never realised that the winter in Russia was so long Bangor has hardly had snow in 6 years but if it does get like it was earlier this year Bethesda is an amazing place to go, thats where most of the snow is in north wales that isnt up a mountain. and just to say that if i came across in a mean way at all i am sorry as that is not the way it was meant to be but seriously a good coat is a life saver. im glad you like it
