I love Ace Combat, playing since AC3. Skipping AC6 because didn't want buy Xbox. I love Armored Core, skipping PS3 generation. Having blast with AC6 recently. Playing Assassin Creed II but got bored midway. Not interested with Assetto Corsa.
If you hold down L and tap R you can switch througu hud, cockpit, and third person view. Thought it was weird they didnt mention that anywhere in the game.
@notcole Yeah, I was shocked when I had discovered it. It must have been 6 years after the game had come out, I was watching someone play the game and switch views without pausing the game. I was shocked the feature existed but was not brought up in the tutorial or even the controls menu (I think).
I know it’s not technically part of the series, but when you’ve finished the rest of the games I would love to see you cover Project Wingman. It was made by ace combat fans, for ace combat fans, and has basically been adopted into the ace combat fanbase
Not gonna lie. When you played the song "Sulejmani" (NOTE: It got changed to "War-Torn Radiance" after the song itself got reused in Ace Combat 3D: Cross Rumble along with the other song such as "Sound Embrace") upon talking about how cool the music in this game makes me wanna try out Joint Assault for the first time. Upon hearing that part you used, I feel like the violins rends my heart in twain. It's just so beautiful and heartbreaking to listen to. Great review, though!
THANK YOU. It's really refreshing to see a reviewer actually appreciating JA for what it is. It is such an underrated gem and it makes me sad that people tend to either overlook it, or give it flak (ironically mostly coming from people who haven't even played it, or just played the first few missions). And actually I'm really surprised that you seemed to enjoy the level design more than I do, which IMO is the game's weakest part. I remember having a great time the first time I played it, and enjoyed it even more so when I played it with my friends :) we had great moments, clutches and laughs together. I'm also really glad that you enjoyed the game's story's too. As lackluster as it is it keeps me quite engaged on it, and I think it would've had a really great if they polished it a bit. The Varcolac Squadron are such a bunch of loveable goofballs, and I love every encounter with them - they're easily one of the best part of the games. And honestly it also really surprises me that you enjoyed Sulejmani's final boss fight. Most people hate it because of how "unfair" it is - but I think it's literally where the game peaks IMO. I just absolutely love the presentation, Sulejmani's voice acting as corny or campy it may be it always captivates me because I can tell the voice actor gave it all in his role. And the music which oh my god - it always manages to make me tear-eyed because of how absolutely how beautiful it is - how it perfectly manages to capture his pain, which is the reason why I heavily sympathize heavily with him. Speaking of his theme song, THANK YOU FOR INCLUDING IT IN YOUR PICKS! THE FACT THAT IT'S NOT APPRECIATED ENOUGH MAKES ME SO SAD AND IT FILLS ME WITH JOY THAT A NEWCOMER TO THE FRANCHISE EVEN ACKNOWLEDGES IT 😭IT'S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL AND HEART-WRENCHING TRACK. I love it so much and it means so much for me personally that it managed to dethrone Megalith as my favorite track in the whole franchise! And not to be that guy, but on a side note regarding the tutorial; JA was not the first Ace Combat game to feature tutorials - ACE04 and ACE5 did it previously. Great review! 🦂
based comment I've played hundred of hours on this game. I'm played so much that at the end my psp was dead because how much time I played it. You said everything but man the last world of Suljemani " "You're no different, Antares. Your wings are a token of your previous victories." This has been the last Ace Combat mission I've played until tomorrow. Tomorrow we reach the Skies Unknown!"
It's very disingenuous to say that most of JA's flak comes from people who have barely played it. I've played JA all the way through more than once, and it truly is one of the worst Ace Combat games. The story is plain, the characters suck, the flight mechanics are completely messed up especially in third person, the music is okay but it plays at really awkward moments with really odd cuts, and a lot of the mission design is atrocious, especially Blockade. If you like it, that's okay, but everyone is allowed their opinions.
Even if JA has numerous imperfect characteristics, it's really nice for what it gives us. Even though I don't predominantly play it as much as I do the console titles, JA has a charm of its own just as every other AC game possesses in its own regard. Getting to hear popular tracks from AC2, entering absurd situations with the Varcolac Squadron and airships like the Orgois dispense a nice balance between the absurd and nostalgia. If anything, that's what Ace Combat strives for and there will always be people to enjoy that specific facet of the series.
@@_Phantom_ I've always said that even the worst Ace Combat games have something to enjoy, because Ace Combat at its core is very good and it's difficult to violate that without throwing out the gameplay entirely for something else _a la_ Advance or Northern Wings. For example, I personally dislike AC6 for subjective reasons, but still recognize that at its core is the same Ace Combat loop I love, so I get it. I should have clarified that in my comment above; even the worst Ace Combat games are baseline playable. For me, JA's charm is in the "so bad it's good" territory; something that has objective failures but you can't help but laugh at it and have some weird fun with it despite it all. And of course there's people who actually enjoy it, for whatever reason, and that's okay, too. Like I said above, everyone is allowed an opinion. I just don't like calling the game underrated when it's not underrated at all. Even Chole's video script contradicts the title.
I played Joint Assault, I am the people. It's ass. The author of the video himself answers the question why the game is overlooked: it feels terrible to play. The bit about pacing is bullshit, every mission is either waiting for enemies to pop up, which takes away your agency, or a boss fight with ANOTHER sky fortress or Varcolac squadron (how an A-10 can reach Mach 1?). Sulejmani himself is a wasted character: he was a total dick for the entire game and the backstory drops just before you're about to gun him down. While Olivieri is Navarro with the looks of Jeff Bezos. Regarding the plot, the Varcolac spill the truth about the Golden Axe plan for zero reasons beside the plot needing to progress somehow. The AI is either braindead or straight up cheating. You can be entitled to your own opinion, but that means you can't handle the truth.
I will definitely say one thing, the planes always have had a slight, SLIGHT offset Also, one of the Composers for this game actually composed three tracks for Ace Combat 3 back in the day, including my favorite “Revelation.” Also he returns for this game’s spiritual successor, Ace Combat AHL also known as 3D Cross Rumble in Japan Also, ANNNNNNTAAAAAAARRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS
JA has at least 2 composers, the one you're talking about is Go Shiina. The other is Inon Zur of Fallout 3/4 fame, who composed most of the soundtrack for this.
As we rapidly approach AC7 there's was something else going on in the background at that time you should know about. The gap between AC6 and 7 was huge, we did see Assault Horizon which was seen as a bit of a departure in the series and had a mixed reception, but fans were waiting a really long time for Ace Combat's triumphant return, so long in fact that a team of fans decided to make their own game called Project Wingman. AC7 would end up slipping in before Wingman's eventual release date, but fans really got behind its "if you won't do it i will" attitude and what's even better is that it totally delivered on its promise, it's completely faithful to its inspiration to the point that the fanbase has adopted it as an unofficial part of the franchise. I'm guessing you've already seen the other comments about it :P, it'll be a great way to round off this retrospective.
Actually, Project Wingman mostly started after AC7 had already been revealed. The problem was that AC7 had not been announced for PC yet, so Project Wingman was aiming to be that "Ace Combat on PC" experience. And, as you said, AC7 ended up releasing before Project Wingman did anyway.
Thanks to the algorithm, this video pops up right at the moment I finish all 21+2 solo missions on Ace difficulty with S Ranks. I played Joint Assault so much when it came out that it grows on me even to this day. In which case, I extracted the save file from my old psp and loaded it on emulator and 100% it. And WOW...I sobbed like the kid I used to be when I heard Sulemani's theme hit again. The buildup of facing your former teammates at the dusk of San Francisco, the violin in the background, Sulemani's screams, everything just feel so right about the final mission. Speaking of challenges, the extra mission SP02 on Hard/Ace difficulty took me longer than a whole campaign speedrun to reach S Rank as it requires you to take down 100 fighters in one go with limited ammunition and it also features Falken shooting lasers at you in the end. After resets and resets to meet the best time marker. I did it. I revisited my childhood and upscaled it in an ultimate way. Thank you Joint Assault and thank you Chole for making this video.
It is the first Ace combat game I have played. I can admit that it's impact is minimal in the franchise as a whole on account that it has nothing to do with the strangereal lore at large, but it was still a cool game. Also, being able to play multiplayer in the missions with a mate. I never did it back when I had a PSP because I was the only twat with a PSP back then, but now I managed to fulfill the dream with my nephew 10 years later with the emulator. Which incidentally does not need an internet connection to work. How? I haven't a clue. Magic.
@@Njin8492 What other PSP emulator is there than PPSSPP? It's a bit of an arse to set up, I recommend looking up a video, and make sure the game actually has multiplayer, and you're good to go. Just make sure you're in the same room, I don't know if it works if you're far away.
Me and my brother had played this together initially. Second Ace Combat game ever. (With it's "prequel" being my first, of course.) It was fun, but, that game feel, as you mentioned, holds it back. Everything just feels...slower. Despite that, the music in this game is so good.
There's other answers too: Officially, less than 200k people in Japan played. The base game is shit compared to ACX. (Flight physics are lard based, and most enemies are braindead)
All X2 had to do really was Keep X’s Flight Model but Make it a Bit Better !? Also the campaign could’ve been a lot Longer so we could see more of Earth and More Real World Maps 🤷♂️
Thank you for making this video. This game was my childhood and played it countless times until my Memory Stick died and lost my savegame. Having bought AC7 sometime ago i decided to go back and play it yesterday and it is still amazing as i rember it being when i was a kid. Thankfully it's getting some recognition now since it has been under the radar for way too long. It would be amazing to get a sort of remastered version even as a mod of AC7.
It has one of the most unique co-op's Ive ever played and playing just the single player mode is like playing 50% of the game since there are mechanics unique only for this coop mode. The most important feature are Joint Operations: you can play certain missions with your friend(s) in parallel with each other (you play one one map, your friend plays on another). You both not only have extra targets to destroy but also need to be cautious not to let any extra enemy fighters escape your mission to break through to your coop player to make his sortie a lot harder. The same goes for other targets: If you don't destroy a jamming station in your mission, your buddy will have trouble targeting targets in his, and so on.
I mean, you partially answer the thumbnail's question yourself: the game just feels bad to play. The #1 most important thing in an AC game is how the moment to moment gameplay feels, and JA is easily among the worst there. It's not even "realistic", they just took the AC5/ACZ flight model (the least realistic up to that point, with almost no concept of inertia or angle of attack) and reduced the mobility values to a fraction while multiplying acceleration to ludicrous levels. AC3, AC04 and ACX already had much more realistic handling and thrust behavior. Other big issues are the mission design, which is also atrocious, and the enemy AI which is either completely braindead or outright cheating like Sulejmani (how exactly is that a fair fight in the slightest? You're the only one I've ever seen with that opinion, he literally does impossible maneuvers to auto-evade missiles and turn 180º on you). Regarding mission design, it's basically a far worse case of AC5 syndrome where half the time they didn't even think of giving the player actual stuff to do and you just wait around for things to spawn. JA's Blockade is a contender for worst mission in the series, being the epitome of this nonsense design approach.
Acx2 is my first ace combat to i beat so im a bit bias But still after beating AC1,AC2 AC3,AC4,AC5,AC7,ACX I still comeback to this game because of the tons of content in this game and reprisal is one the best ac mission ngl And how much i had fun playing this game in coop
Played this a lot more than ACX because the audio is a lot better and the game is harder. The final battle with Sulejmani made me learn to use the guns more especially with his fight. Oh, and you can fly WW2 planes in this game.
I also never noticed the sluggish, realistic movement of the planes. I did think the mobility is pretty low despite the stat saying it's above average, but I thought to myself that it's much like AC3 and I got the hang of flying in that game before coming to this.
@@Aerynolae AC3's mobility values are significantly higher than JA's, especially for roll which is atrocious in JA. AC3 is just punishing in terms of stalling, actually having to take thrust into account when ascending, and planes actually having inertia during turns. JA by comparison has very unrealistic physics, they basically just took AC5/ACZ's flight model and slowed down pitch/roll rates to a fraction, often well below what the real life equivalents can do.
I love the music in this game. The results screen after a mission, and a lot of the soundtrack being more orchestra and less electronic than usual is interesting.
Little thing thats not mentioned on this video. The US and EU versions of this game are slightly different. On the EU version enemy planes grow in size the further away they are from you, which looks really weird and i personally hate it.
I remember playing it on hardest difficulty and my biggest issue with final boss was that cannon have limited ammo just like main weapons. And about half of that ammo was spent on first part of the mission defending San Francisco. Also QMAAM was OP in final mission against regular Varcolac's.
When I still was a kid and didn't know how AC worked, since it was my first one, I thought that to get the S Rank on every mission I just needed to use my gun to destroy every target in every mission, so I finished the whole campaign I don't know how many times on Ace/Hard doing only gun runs. All of this just to get the Varcolac Anyway this game's pretty good, and the OST is damn good
LoL 6:35 which I Personally like as it make the POV of the Craft your Controlling Have More Personally And it just makes it More Immersive as it’s working with the awesome Movements Of the Jet , Too bad you got sick 😅 But Project Wingman HAS That option if you want a Boring FIXED POV where the Craft Doesn’t even Move, OR Have the Craft leave the Screen from Swaying 😅
Random thing, when looking up joint assault youll get two results, ace combat X2:joint assault and just ace combat: joint assault, just me or? Edit:ACJA final boss, sulejmani is currently my favorite final boss in ace combat
It's just a regional difference! In Japan it was released as "Ace Combat X2: Joint Assault" and internationally it was released as "Ace Combat: Joint Assault" 🙂
Funny how I actually struggled less with the hard and Ace mode in this one compare to X, where on X I had to use the Falken with its laser, on this one I can just grab the F-22 with some parts on it to increase some stats and have it done. and managing to beat the Ace mode first try without dying too unlike Ace Combat X. The missiles guidance also had been greatly improved compare to X, it's more easy to hit a target even if it did a sharp turn. The fact that you can have so many customistation with the loadout of the plain can also allow you to go full secondary weapon instead of regular main missile then secoundary or just go full main with standard missiles then the high percision one, but honestly, I never played without the standard missiles because they just can do anything other can as well, I mainly use others as secondary instead. My least fav mission of the game is the one where you must prevent Valahia to escape with nuke material, but you can't shoot the choppers (and later the ship) having the containers and have to delay it until your own fleet arrive for a blockade. The thing is that 80% of the mission consist of you flying around and do nothing and worst part is that the mission has no checkpoints, you die, or fail and it's back at the begining The thing you forgot to mention is that each plane in this game don't have only four but 6 different skin we can use and each one of them is easy to unlock, just play with the plane. The emblem system also contain the emblem of previous Ace Combat like Mobius 1, but to unlock them you must first complete a secret mission unlocked in free mode. Where you basically go on a rampage mission like B7R or the Comona Islands but each new wave include an ace from the Strangeeal universe, so you are fighting against Gryphus 1, Mobius 1, Cypher etc, each in their respective plane but controled by AI (so play in Ace to not shoot them down easily and give them some respect), once mission complete, their emblems as well as the one of their countries or army are available in the hangar to use as your own. I wish the game give us some AI teammates for our squad, I don't ask something of quality but just to make it more immersive, three AI teammates that can't be shotdown but also don't do much but at least a bit in battle to fully have that squad of four experience. Speaking of you didn't mentioned the true inovation of this game: Joint assault ops, (yeah title of the game, shocker) which is only available in multiplayer coop mode of the campign, and it's basically you and your teammates going at two different places at once (these mission where you have to choose where you wanna go alone in solo, in coop both of you can go in the two at onces) you will then execute each mission simultaneously, which require some communication to be synchronise when some objective requires you to be. Sadly I didn't had pals to play with back then.
Joint Assault was my first AC game. And partially because of that, it's still one of my favorites. But it's also a genuinely really good game for all the reasons you mentioned, even if it does have a fair amount of downsides
Just added my votes to the pot. A great review. As I've said before I never played these games but love the lore of the universe. The development of the games from a technical basis has also really been interesting. Whichever game you choose it will be interesting. My internet was recently out and I hooked up my Original XBOX, this is also the first time I realised my TV still has a SCART. I see Obscure on your list and I LOVE that game. It's so underrated, another game that never got the recognition it deserved was The Thing
You should keep playing it, some planes are a real joy to fly after unlocking key parts that really unlock mobility. For example the MIGs and the Typhoon, even the Tomcat becomes a really decent plane with the right parts. Not to mention the made-up planes!
The co op is what made this game amazing! Had plenty of fun hours with randoms etc...wish they'd add co op to the next game...7 should've had it honeslty...
This game just step up from previous one, the difficulty spiks strongly, encounter with Varcolac, and Sulejmani finale for Me will be the hardest and I make it Harder in HARD with MY F22
Been one of my most played Ace Combat game and second been AC Zero while third was Ace Combat X, then fourth, fifth and sixth were Ace Combat 5, AC7 and AC 04 (yet to play both of them too for some time)
I sure hope Rainbow Six gets picked as the next series, the first one and its bajillion extensions were my favorites, and it has so many consoles spinoffs.
I like ACX2 joint assault ngl but the only gripe that I have with this game is the flying because the planes somehow feel fast yet slow, I think it might be because there's very low visual or audio feedback of how fast your going.
The ost in this game to me is among the best, grand flight and varcolac squadron are so good, specially varcolac squadron I’d easily put it in a top 5 AC songs. Did you manage to beat Sulejmani in ace mode? I swear that fight is impossible. Never beat it, also after first play through you unlock ww2 fighters
When I was a kid I played that game so much that I could beat him in Ace mode in like 5 mins on the Typhoon. And around 2 times on novice controls because I was a kid and didn't notice the issue, I probably can't do it anymore now
sensor control switch right slew tdc over target. adjust radar elevation and scan fov. sensor control switch depress. wait to be within range fox 3. oh wait
haven't played it myself, but this game has phenomenal music and characters in my opinion. The final mission's music and dialogue are one of my favorites in the series, too overhated.
Hey bro I highly recommend you play “The sky Crawlers:innocent aces” it’s only available on the wii but it was made in collaboration with project aces it’s a really good game if you like the ace combat style. Pls it’s really good give jt a try don’t sleep on it !
it has system remastered version of ACX:SD.. Very clean much better than AC7 (in my opinion).. It has co-op mode for campaign progress too.. That blew my mind.. Because most game out there.. You able to do co-op once you finish certain mission, and you had to replay the mission.. With this mode, I can jump straight co-op and finish the game together.. Srsly compare other AC game with ACX:JA.. This is the best so far.. but storyline is kinda 6/10.. It is not happening in Strangereal world.. It happening to the Earth.. It feels like.. Idk, odd? or not make any sense? 😂.. But still love the game especially the coop mode..
The only game that shows antagonist’s side of briefing.. Now we know, every side’s briefing they gonna play epic songs, cool looking map and missions..
well my nitpick with this game is that the planes feels slow.. but for a psp game? damn it's good fr. i wiiiiiiiish they couldve rerelease this for ps vita back then :
This is what people are talking about when they say X2 is about insurance scam? I thought it was just a joke and meme from an in game dialog or a character trope.
the terribleness of X2's camera can't be overstated. after 100+ hours on ACX the first time I tried X2 I almost fell off my school chair and never played it again.
I'm gonna say think, I'm one of few people that can actually praise Joint Assault for some small things they did. But this review is so staggeringly positive, to the point I don't think you're anywhere near close to show Joint Assault in a truthful manner.
Idk why but everytime i play the game with emulator it always stuck in black screen after that mission in egypt pyramid, also i recognize that joint assault setting in emulator need to be configure if you want to run it smothly
Man. I wish I could play all the Ace Combat games myself. Also, what is better than shooting down US-made B-2 stealth bombers escorted by MiGs over a US city?
I think that part of the reason that people don’t like joint assault is because it takes place in the real world and not strangereal, and started a bit of a deviation from mainline for a while.
@@mrandrossguy9871yes and no? Like, all of the numbered games and air combat are all cannon. That and the fact that all the other games that take place in the real world are very deviant from mainline gameplay inn a bad way, as well as poor storytelling in those games, and the non-strangereal games get a pretty bad rep.

Ace combat X2 Joint Assult is not as good as Ace Combat X Skies Of Deception. First of all, it starts you out in the basic beginners control scheme, which means you’re plane flies left and right, but it doesn’t roll left and right. Second, you can put it on a more advanced control scheme but it feels a lot more slow and heavy compared to the first PSP Ace Combat game. I believe this is the biggest issue. I have personally with the game. Other than that, I have to say it’s pretty much on power with the rest of the holy Trinity of PS2 Ace Combat games.
Well yes the game is meant for Co op mode rather than singleplayer, there are more hidden missions if you played in co op mode. But the are many things that I criticize and it was most on every single mission, the story was bad, the gameplay are slow as hell, the ai is dumb and to unlock the second variants for the missions you need to force someone to play this game.
I actually find Ace Combat Assault Horizon quite tasteful. I wouldn’t want the whole franchise to go that way but it’s a refreshing change of pace and feel, and is something I can go back to in order to mix things up a bit! And the damage models look absolutely incredible, and I prefer the more realistic graphics over 7’s more “cartoonish” look
@@Mobius118 Both games had realistic graphics. To me, AC7 actually looks more realistic due to it being on Unreal Engine 4 and being newer. Also, I had replayed Assault Horizon recently and it's still not as good. The story is decent at least but the 2nd helicopter mission actually gave me motion sickness.
Amazing video, i loved this game when i first played 10 years ago, but never replayed it again, maybe i should convice a group of friends to give it a try in coop. Spiridius is one of the greatest soundtracks in the series.
Spiridus is literally a mashup of Ace Combat with Super Smash Bros, Star Wars, and Final Fantasy and it’s grown to be my favourite in the soundtrack. Fun Fact: The same OST can be found on AC2’s OST on the second disc named “Metropolitan.” There’s also some others like Linkage (Sky Mix) and even Call, which is Orgoi’s theme.
5:04 Bruh Really !? In-game Tutorials are Lazy ! The Whole Point of having a Fully SEPARATE TUTORIAL MODE is to FULLY GRASP The Basics without having the Campaign interrupted by holding your Hand ! I wish games would stop doing that and Bring back a Full Separate Tutorial MODE 🤷♂️
I like Joint Assault a lot, but you can immediately see the problems with setting it in the real world. Your enemy being a splinter group from the fall of the Soviet Union isn't remotely interesting or original from a narrative point of view, and the stakes can never be quite as high as an actual war playing out before you. I personally thought the OST was a bit much, and was much happier when a classic Ace 2 track came back. Still, I love the variation and customisability of your arsenal.
The big issue is the game decided to use Sky Crawlers stats for planes, meaning youre trying to fly a prop plane with jet expectations. You need to use parts and cheats to get proper flight models. Its not "realistic" it's just actually wrong. Especially when you see the thinfs the enemies can do. This will get worse as the series goes on. Also, "first game with a proper tutorial". Mate, 4 had a tutorial, and 6 had tutorials for everything. You just played that one. As for the story, your rivals are probably the most meh the series so far due to really bad voice acting and direction. The ideas are there, but its half baked. Since it sold so bad, ill let you guess what comes back in later games. Also, really on the music? Reusing old music doesnt make it better, its lazier. The new stuff is good, but sometimes its placed in the weirdest of spots. In the Zone should have been an actual proper fight, not an early mission background noise. Just some context, Go Shiina is also the composer for God Eater, and it shows with his tracks. I quite like them when they fit.
Comment part 2 deducted payment Ace Combat 7 for S rank this time Namco Bandai gives all of us the biggest fattest middle finger and everything works against you ,,time ,,damage,, score,, and the return line want more info ,,on Namco Banda Nintendo of America ,24 list of issue i discovered as i play this game 25 and for the worst one of them all microtransactions,, all the extra jets makes this game up to R4000 to bay
Why did you call the game criminally underrated in the title and then say that, while the game has some good things, "it's massively held back by some of the changes to the core gameplay" and that you "can't rate this game as highly as a lot of its predecessors because it's just frustrating to play when I know how much of a downgrade the overall game feels here"? That doesn't seem like a criminally-underrated game... that seems more like people have perfectly rated the game.
The factors that made ACX appealing are all gone in JA, Strangereal is gone, the good writing is gone, the good flying physics is gone, the convincing last battle against enemy ace(s) is gone, everything that went well on X now is all corrupted and both games were from the same dev team, WHY? I also hate the concept of superweapons in this game, I believe tossing huge air fortresses THIS frequently make the players tired of those not attracted And Sulejmani, yeah this straight cheating bastard has the thickest plot armor and most inhuman reaction, worse than any "final boss" aces like Pixy and Mihaly, even Markov No offence but JA is what I define "the WORST AC game ever made", worse than Assault Horizon, worse than the GBA one or the obscure mobile game Even AH granted us some good stuff, and JA failed to do that at least for me
Ace Combat 7 it worse you fly only have wind coming from nowhere 2 stage that is worse in Ace Combat 7 1 have missiles coming to you that never miss even if in the clouds for that stage 2 a stage of laser laser guided bombing o 3 a stage that look like thy take out DBZ mountains pillars and trees in ace7 you fight mister x on dbz x2 super android 17
This game is not good... The flight model is awfully slow and floaty (not even AC3 is this bad), the mission design is nonsensical and sometimes boring, the enemies are braindead, and it fetures one of the worst boss fights in the series. The good things this game brings such as the co-op campaign and the ability to customize any plane (as opposed to only being able to customize the fictional planes like in ACX), end up being overshadowed by the bad gameplay. This game pretty much got the rating it deserved. It isn't complete trash like AC Advance, but I wouldn't call it "underrated".
I feel for that review and was IMMENSELY disappointed - I was ready to tolerate the generic plot for a piece of AC gameplay, but it is simply not there: the flight model is COMPLETELY ruined, it's not just some planes having worse stats, game was intentionally rigged to superficially make enemy planes fly slower and closer to you by meddling with scale and physics, just like HAWX 2 did. And the original music for this game has no AC feel at all as well, sounds really cheap and boring. So, given the real Earth setting, generic plot, lame music and awful flight model, we basically have HAWX Portable on our hands.

If you hold down L and tap R you can switch througu hud, cockpit, and third person view. Thought it was weird they didnt mention that anywhere in the game.
THERE'S A BUTTON FOR IT???
Changing it in the menu got so annoying 😅
@notcole Yeah, I was shocked when I had discovered it. It must have been 6 years after the game had come out, I was watching someone play the game and switch views without pausing the game. I was shocked the feature existed but was not brought up in the tutorial or even the controls menu (I think).
actually, you have to hold down L and R and press the select button to cycle through the camera.
you can what now???? I've finished that campaign 5 times and I never noticed
@@warhawkfan1234 I just tried doing this and it doesn’t work? Does it not work if you’re playing the game on a vita?
I know it’s not technically part of the series, but when you’ve finished the rest of the games I would love to see you cover Project Wingman. It was made by ace combat fans, for ace combat fans, and has basically been adopted into the ace combat fanbase
Seconding this. PW is kino.
3rd this. it's such a beautifull loveletter to AC
4th this. It's not even an Ace Combat game yet it's welcomed into the Ace Combat community

I've played hundred of hours on this game.
I will definitely say one thing, the planes always have had a slight, SLIGHT offset
Also, one of the Composers for this game actually composed three tracks for Ace Combat 3 back in the day, including my favorite “Revelation.” Also he returns for this game’s spiritual successor, Ace Combat AHL also known as 3D Cross Rumble in Japan
Also, ANNNNNNTAAAAAAARRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS
JA has at least 2 composers, the one you're talking about is Go Shiina. The other is Inon Zur of Fallout 3/4 fame, who composed most of the soundtrack for this.
@@PositronCannon Oh neat it’s you! I recognize you from the discord(s?)
@@PositronCannonmost of the soundtrack from Inon Zur is actually from AC2, like "call" is the "orgoi" theme
Magic.
What emulator were you using? I really want to play this with a friend.
@@Njin8492 What other PSP emulator is there than PPSSPP?
It's a bit of an arse to set up, I recommend looking up a video, and make sure the game actually has multiplayer, and you're good to go. Just make sure you're in the same room, I don't know if it works if you're far away.
@@DZ-1987 great, i never knew ppsspp also has multiplayer capability. Will loom into it. Thanks. :)
Me and my brother had played this together initially. Second Ace Combat game ever. (With it's "prequel" being my first, of course.) It was fun, but, that game feel, as you mentioned, holds it back. Everything just feels...slower.
Despite that, the music in this game is so good.
Why nobody talks about this game? One word: Real Earth
That's two words but lore is everything for a lot of people playing this series...
There's other answers too:
Officially, less than 200k people in Japan played.
The base game is shit compared to ACX. (Flight physics are lard based, and most enemies are braindead)
I mean playing like crap doesn't help either. It doesn't matter how good it's story or ideas are, if it flows like crap it's still crap
The planes fly at 5mph idk how they fumbled that

The Suleijmani song had no reason to go so hard and yet it did - I know "go hard" is used haphazardly nowadays, but Suleijmani deserves
All X2 had to do really was Keep X’s Flight Model but Make it a Bit Better !?
Also the campaign could’ve been a lot Longer so we could see more of Earth and More Real World Maps 🤷♂️
I just had to say it
At 13:05 Sulejmani is true art. I think that song is so good that I learned it on the violin. I have part of the solo memorized.
That’s the one thing I don’t like about X2 was being alone for most of the game but I do like the new weapons they added
Acx2 is my first ace combat to i beat so im a bit bias
But still after beating AC1,AC2 AC3,AC4,AC5,AC7,ACX
I still comeback to this game because of the tons of content in this game and reprisal is one the best ac mission ngl
And how much i had fun playing this game in coop
It is the only Ace Combat game I couldnt finish. I despise Suleimani
Another thing to add, the difficulty modes in JA are a dud.
@@PositronCannonall X2 should have done was Make the Flight Model a Bit BETTER than X 🤷♂️
Instead they did the Opposite
I love the music in this game. The results screen after a mission, and a lot of the soundtrack being more orchestra and less electronic than usual is interesting.
This was the firts Ace Combat game I play and it put on the saga, a very good game, with a story aaaaa! I love it
Little thing thats not mentioned on this video.
All of this just to get the Varcolac
Anyway this game's pretty good, and the OST is damn good
This was my first ace combat game ever. I did not play any of the games before this was my first game of the franchise.
LoL 6:35 which I Personally like as it make the POV of the Craft your Controlling Have More Personally And it just makes it More Immersive as it’s working with the awesome Movements Of the Jet ,
Too bad you got sick 😅
But Project Wingman HAS That option if you want a Boring FIXED POV where the Craft Doesn’t even Move, OR Have the Craft leave the Screen from Swaying 😅
Random thing, when looking up joint assault youll get two results, ace combat X2:joint assault and just ace combat: joint assault, just me or?
Edit:ACJA final boss, sulejmani is currently my favorite final boss in ace combat
It's because the Japanese release was X2, everywhere else it was just joint assault.
It's just a regional difference! In Japan it was released as "Ace Combat X2: Joint Assault" and internationally it was released as "Ace Combat: Joint Assault" 🙂
Dont forget to play Ace Combat Northern Wings
@aegir5198 worse than Assault horizon
Glad to see I’m not the only one who likes this game
The thing is that 80% of the mission consist of you flying around and do nothing and worst part is that the mission has no checkpoints, you die, or fail and it's back at the begining
The thing you forgot to mention is that each plane in this game don't have only four but 6 different skin we can use and each one of them is easy to unlock, just play with the plane.
MY HONOR! MY PRIDE! MY LIFE!
Just found ur channel. Subed. Great stuff man well done
I remember the first time I had to beat the final mission by going online and have a rando help me.

AC Joint Assault literally had the best Super weapon in my opinion. The SPIRIDUS is a freaking beast!
And around 2 times on novice controls because I was a kid and didn't notice the issue, I probably can't do it anymore now
I use to go to Target to play Ace combat 6 demo on the Xbox 360 😂
When playing co-op you and your co-op partners can split up to tackle different missions. And that allows you to affect the other mission.

it has system remastered version of ACX:SD..

This is what people are talking about when they say X2 is about insurance scam? I thought it was just a joke and meme from an in game dialog or a character trope.
the terribleness of X2's camera can't be overstated.

I think that part of the reason that people don’t like joint assault is because it takes place in the real world and not strangereal, and started a bit of a deviation from mainline for a while.

It's so bad, it's a masterpiece.
I need more coop ace combat
Ace combat X2 Joint Assult is not as good as Ace Combat X Skies Of Deception. First of all, it starts you out in the basic beginners control scheme, which means you’re plane flies left and right, but it doesn’t roll left and right. Second, you can put it on a more advanced control scheme but it feels a lot more slow and heavy compared to the first PSP Ace Combat game. I believe this is the biggest issue. I have personally with the game. Other than that, I have to say it’s pretty much on power with the rest of the holy Trinity of PS2 Ace Combat games.
Why do people call sulejmani fight hard???
It's pretty easy tbh
Well yes the game is meant for Co op mode rather than singleplayer, there are more hidden missions if you played in co op mode. But the are many things that I criticize and it was most on every single mission, the story was bad, the gameplay are slow as hell, the ai is dumb and to unlock the second variants for the missions you need to force someone to play this game.
ASSAULT HORIZON NEXT!!! LET'S GOOO!!!!

You haven't played multiplayer so you haven't played each game to the fullest.

I like this game but the story itself and the camera is.... eugh
Agreed
WHY THE HECK DOES THIS GAME HAVE A AM6 ZERO??
Because it's awesome :)
@notcole just unlcoked the American prop F6f i think
The flight physics is so bad i cant finish it
Comment part 2
deducted payment Ace Combat 7 for S rank
this time Namco Bandai gives all of us the biggest fattest middle finger
and everything works against you
,,time ,,damage,, score,, and the return line

25 and for the worst one of them all microtransactions,, all the extra jets makes this game up to R4000 to bay
Content man, this whole series felt like a gpt generated one by how many times he contradicts himself, but hey effort is still effort.
Why are you into Ace Kombat if you seem more into SlyCooper hmm...
The factors that made ACX appealing are all gone in JA, Strangereal is gone, the good writing is gone, the good flying physics is gone, the convincing last battle against enemy ace(s) is gone, everything that went well on X now is all corrupted and both games were from the same dev team, WHY?
I also hate the concept of superweapons in this game, I believe tossing huge air fortresses THIS frequently make the players tired of those not attracted
And Sulejmani, yeah this straight cheating bastard has the thickest plot armor and most inhuman reaction, worse than any "final boss" aces like Pixy and Mihaly, even Markov
No offence but JA is what I define "the WORST AC game ever made", worse than Assault Horizon, worse than the GBA one or the obscure mobile game
Even AH granted us some good stuff, and JA failed to do that at least for me
Ace Combat 7 it worse
you fly only have wind coming from nowhere
2 stage that is worse in Ace Combat 7
1 have missiles coming to you that never miss even if in the clouds for that stage
2 a stage of laser laser guided bombing
o 3 a stage that look like thy take out DBZ mountains pillars and trees in ace7 you fight mister x on dbz x2 super android 17
X2 sucks,x is better
Yeah, but ALL X2 had to do was Keep Flight Model of X 🤷♂️
More friendly aircraft And more interesting stories. In X
@@Johnson张-j9cyou couldn’t fly a Freaking Passenger Jet Through Grand Canyon in X though 😅
Nah X2 wins only with the final mission against sulejmani hand down. That was very emotional. I want a remake honeslty. I would play It till im dead.
