“Je suis Malade” was written by famous French singer & songwriter Serge Lama together with composer/singer Alice Dona in 1973.
This is based on his own experience and he was the original performer, hence some lyrics are a bit male-oriented (eg my mother leaves me, whiskies, I pour my blood in your body, …).
When Serge Lama had a dinner with Alice Dona and told her about his obsessive love that was leading to a road block, she came back home and compose the music in a couple of hours.
The morning after, she presented him the music and he wrote the lyrics in … 20 minutes.
Serge Lama was the original performer in 1973, it started to be promoted on the radio, and the song was brought to fame only when, a few months after, Dalida covered it. She was an absolute mega star in France, another emotional powerhouse, and this song resonated very much with her own feelings. Her success with this song transformed it into a french classic, and started to make it famous abroad.
But it is Lara Fabian that really made this song a very popular song in many countries with her cover in the mid 90s.
At that time Dalida had already passed away, but Serge Lama was (and is) still alive. Dalida and Serge were two inspirations for Lara, so she sent an audio copy to Serge of her version. She was unknown at that time in France but he was so impressed with her vocal skills and her emotions rendering that he invited her in France to sing it as a duet. They became good friends.
Lara has made some subtle changes to the song that gave it even more power and Serge Lama adopted these in his later interpretations.
This 1999 version ("From Lara with Love" Concert in Montreal) is legendary internationally and has attracted many artists to do a cover, even from non french-speaking countries.
The most recent ones I am aware of are from italian singer Giulia Falcone, from the korean singer Choi Sung Hoon or from the korean band Forestella.
I have no words for that performance, she is beyond anything I have ever seen. She is truly on another level.

YES! You can tell this song took every last bit of emotion she had. That last note was 18 seconds long and this is from what '99-'00? Now Dimash was born in '94. Started his training at 5 so '99. I don't know how old he was when he first heard her, but she was someone he emulated. As a matter of fact, one of his first videos holding a long note where everyone was like, "WOW" I believe it was 18 seconds long. I just can't remember which video it was. Anyway I absolutely love Laura thank you for reacting to her you reacted exactly as I thought you would. (Just as a side note I use voice in because of my arthritis some of the words it comes up with, I could start my own autocorrect page LOL.) ✌❤😎

Love your reactions. You are exactly right. She felt the song and emoted it so dramatically. Great singer, great artist! Please react to her performance at the Juno awards singing "Love by Grace" her own composition. She was named the world's best -selling artist at the time but failed to win the Juno awards. Someone commented that was unfair because she deserved it.
I wonder if the translations are off, because sometimes they really do not fit. But like she said in the beginning and as we all feel it when watching her sing this - you can feel her pain and thats all thats needed. And MAN…. Can this woman hold a note or what!!!!

Your reactions to Lara are really spot on and always delighted when someone finds here for the first time. For me and my late wife is was back in the late 90's in Montreal and we were of course blown away. Since then I have been fortunate to have seen her many time in concert in different venues around the world (most recently just this past June back in Montreal) and she never disappoints. You are absolutely correct to point out how emotionally engaged she becomes with a performance; it truly is astonishing.
