    • @faheemabbas3965
      @faheemabbas3965 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

      Well, the problem is that they aren’t really the same company. The Lotus we all know and love is dead once the Emira goes out of production. This EV Lotus isn’t even really made by them, it’s made by their new Chinese owner Geely. The Lotus name will be in the same situation as MG, no history and just brand name being all that’s left of the original company. They’re what I like to call a “Chinese badge company”.
      All you are seeing in the video is a Geely that’s badged as a “Lotus” and nothing more.
      RIP real Lotus.

      @@faheemabbas3965 I'm sorry but this isn't accurate. The same thing is said about Volvo/Porsche and it's not like MG. MG sort of died and the MG cars are now rebadged cars. Geely isn't doing that. Geely has actually empowered Lotus to become more Lotus. There aren't any more pure sports cars companies that can stay in business. Maserati, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Porsche, are all making "performance luxury crossover SUVs" and here is Lotus doing the same. Lotus, not Geely, is engineering a lot of the feel in the car. Lotus still has their own teams of people working on their cars and while this car may use a platform that an ex-Saab Swedish engineer that now works for Geely has provided for Geely, Lotus has tweaked and tuned it to Lotus standards.
      This car is actually the Swedish designed Zeekr001 base, but it has been refined and moved up to a higher Lotus standard. You can see the Zeekr001 framework in it but so much has been redone, that Lotus has placed it in its own category. And this car also shows that the fit and finish and build quality of cars made in China is now Japanese or German quality at the high end. I don't find anyone getting into these Lotus Eletre or Emiras or the Polestar 3 and saying the quality doesn't feel top notch as well as the build solidity.
      Geely is not a take-over and "China-fy" type of company, contrary to what many people who haven't done sufficient research on this topic say. It's probably one of the best parent companies in the automobile landscape in that it doesn't take away the heritage of the Euro brands. Of course there is some more cooperation and cost sharing but no more so than there is in Stellantis or the VW Group. This is a Lotus. But it is today's Lotus and not yesterdays. No business is the same as it was in previous decades. There is now more globalism, and more countries involved in manufacturing products.

      @faheemabbas3965 The EV argument is stupid. Lotus have to go EV, as will Aston Martin, Jaguar etc. That's the UK Government's fault. And there will still be sports cars built at Hethel after Emira is finished

    • @RS3NDIT

      @@RedVelocistar I didn’t say the interior was ergonomic. I said the interior looks fantastic. If you’re gonna try to invalidate what I’m saying, at least read it properly dude. For a lotus, and really for any car, no matter what logo it may have on it, that interior is objectively good looking. Yeah the functionality isn’t 100% there but it’s a lotus. You don’t buy it for the ergonomics or the functionality, even if it’s an SUV.
      Furthermore, the whole “Chinese garbage” thing is so overdone. Cars made in china can still have objectively better build quality than cars made in the US. Made in the USA isn’t necessarily a pro in terms of quality, no matter how hard people try to paint it that way.

Nobody in America would buy a Chinese branded car, so they buy out the brand, make a drastic change to the lineup (mostly made in China) and sell them as "lotus" or "Volvo" since we have a better image of those brands than some random named Chinese brands. RIP Lotus.

      This is the same inaccuracy that many repeat. Volvo is not a Chinese car branded as a Volvo. Volvo is the same Swedish marque, even more so, than they were under Ford. It was under Ford that Volvo had more Ford parts and influence in it than they do under Geely Holdings. Under ZGH, Volvo was empowered to add engineers, designers and they added people like Robin Page from Bentley and Thomas Ingenlath from VW/Audi and engineers and were able to create Volvos building on the same Volvo technologies and offering the best Volvo can create plus leveraging those of others in the Geely Group. Geely didn't make some Geely car and then say to Volvo, make it look like a Volvo. That's in your imagination, not in reality. Volvo is doing the same Swedish stuff they've always have. Sustainable, sober, stoutly built cars. 25 percent are made in China and the rest elsewhere where Tesla makes 52 percent of their global cars in China. Does that make Tesla Chinese? Absolutely not. They are spec'd in America and there is some international contributions like there are in most car brands.
      And where a car is manufactured has little to do with where it is spec'd. A car's robots and manufacturing techniques can be built in plants anywhere. There are plants in Mexico but that doesn't make cars built there Mexican. Likewise in other countries, including China. A car built in China isn't necessarily Chinese. Just made there. But they can be spec'd anywhere.
      There's no RIP Lotus. Lotus engineers, designers, chassis tuners are alive and well, and some are even working with Polestar in England though a lot of Lotus engineers are tuning Lotus cars in Germany and still road tested in Hethel, England. So please, stop with the misinformation and do real research on this topic.
      Lotus is making an SUV for the same reason other boutique sports car makers are making SUVs. Are they all owned by Chinese companies? No. So, is your theory that Lotus is doing this because Geely Holdings own them really valid?

    Really enjoyed this review. This R is supposed to be kind of scary on launch, I've heard tales and seen some drags that indicate the traction control isn't quite up to the job. Maybe that's what Lotus was looking for on the R dialing in a bit of the ol' "pucker factor" for the risk taker. Off REALLY means off on traction control too, according to Lotus, so keep that in mind. Bob and Mary in their 900hp three plus ton $30K EV SUVs commuting is quite a dystopian future, imo. "There's nothing British or Lotus about this Eletre" To be fair, Lotus has had a variety of owners since the 1980's. General Motors, Bugatti (!), Proton, Geely. When GM bought a controlling stake in Lotus, they had to buy out Toyota's 21% share, so Toyota could have bought Lotus too... Any of them could have made an SUV or EV SUV if they wanted to. I'm not sure why General Motors sold off their ownership of Lotus? Would Lotus be better off under General Motors? 🙂

      My Peugeot also does that whenever a more important vehicle chime has to be played (e.g. parking sensors close to hitting something, driver door open with parking brake not applied/gearbox not in P, etc), because they all come from the same speaker and they will never mix. When the "emergency" situation is over, the blinker will start clicking again.
      It is JUST the sound, however. The turn signal never stops signalling.

      @dariopiovani5077 You are right, I didn't notice the additional sound present when watching the video previously. I am not used to this behavior because the car I drive will always play the turn signal sound, no matter the additional sounds it makes during a situation.

      They're in their infancy. Although electric cars are an over 100-year old industry, battery tech for them is relatively recent. Batteries need to get more efficient, lighter. But electric motors are faster, smoother, quieter, at least when more than one are used because they're so small, than their ICE counterparts.

    People, check your biases against the Chinese and try to be objective. Lotus is a niche brand and as such, niche brands have to expand to stay viable brands. Most niche performance brands have added SUVs to their lineup, sporty ones. Lamborghini, Porsche, Maserati, Ferrari, Aston Martin, so what's your issue that Lotus does so as well? This isn't Colin Chapman's Lotus and so what? Lotus still makes exotic sports cars. But in order for Lotus to exist would you rather them die making sports cars only or be able to provide them while expanding their model lineup with profitable models? And it is no different than Lamborghini. You want them to turn into Triumph or other long lost British marques because you're so hung up on being a purist?
    And you are so anti-China that you can't even research, at least some of you, what Geely is actually doing. They haven't killed the Lotus brand. Nor have they killed the Volvo brand. They've actually expanded them. They haven't moved them out of their headquarters. Lotus and Volvo and Polestar are actually making their own platforms and have more resources now to expand their Euro operations. Teams of people in Europe are tuning, testing, specing these cars, not teams of Geely personnel (who make lines like Geely Auto, Proton, Geometry). So what's with the inaccurate nonsense about Geely making Lotus like MG. It's not the same situation.
    Just needed to get this off my chest because this sort of anti-Chinese stuff is all over comment sections on Geely Holdings cars. I don't hear objections to VW Group building Lamborghinis and VWs on the same platform. I don't hear that Lamborghini is dying. VW does platform sharing and tech sharing and such as does any car group. So, maybe look at the specifics of what actually is happening before going off emotionally because a Chinese company now owns Lotus.
    That's not to say I in any way support the Chinese government. But this is business. And Western companies do business with Chinese and other oppressive governments. That's just the fact.
    My personal opinion is yes, fine car. Overkill, but it is a boutique brand. I know this car has Zeekr001 roots and I can see them, but Lotus has build their own car beyond that and it has a higher material and detail level and obviously, performance level in terms of handling. I just wonder when does the growing sizes of tires stop. 23 inch tires are ludicrous even on a sports crossover. 900 plus horsepower and more. What is the limit? We're getting to the point of silliness and we need to figure out why these cars need to have so much performance and if drivers are skilled enough to handle them.
    Good luck to Lotus and this car and fine work. With some tweaking, this is an interesting addition to the BEV performance SUVs out there.

    • @TassieLorenzo
      @TassieLorenzo 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I strongly disagree that it is primarily anti-China sentiment. If Toyota as the owner of Lotus (they owned 21% in 1988), or General Motors as the owner of Lotus (they owned 91% between 1989 and 1993), or Bugatti as the owner of Lotus (they bought Lotus from GM) had brought out a 5600lb Lotus SUV, I think the *very same sentiment* of this contradicting simplify and add lightness would be expressed! Whether Lotus' parent company is Chinese, Japanese, American or French and then German is not what this is about IMO.

      It's not "the Chinese." Let's be accurate here. This is Geely Holdings, one particular Chinese parent company, not all of the Chinese companies. Another Chinese company could have ruined this one. So, let's acknowledge which Chinese company it is and not make all Chinese companies some sort of monolith. And it is Lotus who has created this car with financial support and a bit of technical support from Geely. Geely empowered but this is mostly what Lotus engineers and designers have done with the resources the parent company provided.
