  • In this oral history, Genya Ravan discusses growing up in a Polish immigrant family, her relationship with her mother, and her experience of generational trauma. She talks about her rebellious youth, semi-accidentally setting her elementary school on fire, and running away from the man she was forced to marry. She details her experience in her many bands: the Escorts, Ten Wheel Drive, and Goldie and the Gingerbreads, the first all-girl band signed to a major label, as well as her experience as a producer. Ravan talks candidly about addiction, sex work, and cancer. She concludes with her thoughts on gender issues in the music industry and aging.
Genya Ravan is a singer, producer, radio DJ, and author. Known for being in the first female rock band signed to a major label, Ravan has been a trailblazer her entire life. After her career with Goldie and the Gingerbreads, Ravan eventually started a career as a producer in the 70s’, producing the Dead Boys and others.

Interviewed by Tanya Pearson for the Women of Rock Oral History Project
The Women of Rock Oral History Project is a collection of digital interviews and written transcripts, housed at the Sophia Smith Collection at Smith College-one of the oldest women’s history archives in the United States. Started by Tanya Pearson in December, 2014, WOROHP documents the lives and careers of women in rock whose work and careers have been underrepresented or omitted from rock journalism and historical scholarship. With a collection of publicized and accessible primary source documents, the Women of Rock Oral History Project seeks to facilitate a more comprehensive, inclusive, and accurate cultural history.

They say that when you scratch the paint on anyone, you'll find a story. But you'll never find another story like Genya's. All that she's seen and been through and she still has that incredible laugh and twinkle in her eyes. And she brings that that disarming frankness about all of it. One of my "most memorable people". Without a doubt. Love ya, Goldie. You are a true original

One of the greatest unsung heroines of rock and roll. To sound cliche, she was a groundbreaker and so far ahead of her time. Her book is a great read.

This lady of Rock & Roll is of the status of a Icon, and a cultural heroine of New York City, especially the Downtown scene, and is a most serious curator of music, a important contributor of modern music, a definitive inspiration for women in rock & Roll.

There's more "balls" in 5 minutes of her reality than a male music superstar's whole obscenely overpriced confessional Broadway run ! The real deal here- Bravo, Genya,- when she scratches the surface, there's blood!
