This is fascinating! I want to turn it off but i just can't. Its too interesting. I need to hear this to the end. Some this harmonies are quite poignant. Neoclassical all the way. He sounds nothing like Hindemith and yet it reminds me of Hindemith in this eork. The Fugue. Damn, i hate it!, NO, I Like It !!! This is sn outrage ! No, its Outstanding !

While some of Martin's music is a tiny bit too arid or dissonant for my general taste (hey, I have my conservative moments), I absolutely LOVE both of his piano concerti. The first work of his I ever was in contact with was the Ballade for Flute, which I accompanied for a flautist friend. I particularly love Martin's approach to contrapuntal material.

Im at a point where i am captivated from the outset by nearly all wuorinens compositions. He is less dense and by some measures considerably shallow compared to EC or Maderna but i have long said and still maintain that wuorinen is the easy listening bridge to much of modern music. He is to serialism what Gershwin was to opera.

Stravinsky..the guy who famously claimed that music had NO ability to arouse our "sentimental cravings" and was "only able to solve musical problems", wrote the final pages of this wonderful work while listening to radio reports of the Allied liberation of Paris in June, 1944. The very first classical music concert i ever went to was at Carniegy Hall in 1973. This was the the first work on the program. I had never heard anything like it. I was 19yo and vompletely enamoured with this piece. I kept that program for years looking for a commercial trcording of it. To me then it was yhe greatest thing since sliced bread. Now in 69,yo. Its still good and a mazing how actually tonal it is. I've come a long way since then. I've graduated on to the symphonies of Honegger and string Quartets which were so wild ehen i first heard them but are now enjoyably notmal musical language for me . Thank you You Tube for posting Horace Victorioux to allow me to telive 50 years ago but with mature ears of a man compared to the boy i was.

For a 1940 Symphony it's an anachronism but damn, it works so well. Something about melody that will never go out of style. Most pleasing !
