I lived in Abertillery for 15 years from 1998 -2013. I really miss the place and the people. I saw a few people that I knew during my time there. Thank you for a fine memory
Great video, I am not welsh, having been born in Yorkshire, but this stopped my scrolling in my tracks, last time I was there was to spread my late fathers ashes, in 96, he was from Blaina, River Row, my mother was from Ariel street Six Bells, Abertillery, she is now in an old folks home, I have lots of very fond memories of this place from childhood when we would visit my grandparents.
I worked there back in the 70’s. Remember it as ‘The town that makes your legs ache’.. Such amazing gradients to walk up. The council seems to have turned it into a ‘Town where no one can stop’, with double yellow lines wherever they can find a road to paint them on.
Lovely video! Years ago, I said hello to 3 or 4 visiting ladies by our community post office (I couldn’t place their accents). Learned they were from Cardiff. So, they asked if they could take a photo of my 1947 Dodge ‘woodie’(old surfer’s wagon) by the post office sign. I moved the woodie next to the sign and I took their photos! The sign is a nicely carved piece of wood with our communities name, ‘Cardiff by the Sea’ (California)!
Amazing editing, all filmed on the odd occasions Town is (slightly) busy and it is great to see a positive view. Good to see businesses highlighted......some attempts at diversity, but.... scaffold all over the place atm, takeaways and beauty salons, including hairdressers galore.....can't all sell the same thing! Peacock's glaringly closed and empty now....why not site a local market there? Spoken with Nigel Daniels on several occasions...."High Street leaders won't come to the Town because delivery access is so difficult!" so we have a one lane track through Church Street! Wilkinson's and Peacock's remain in nearby Pontypool with similar delivery problems! All BGBC Investment goes to Ebbw Vale. Lived here 65 years, love the Town but it is going backwards at a depressing rate!
Until these bone heads whom so called run the area realise we need to keep the youngsters here and spend theothen all we’re doing is the make the rich areas richer when they move look at Blackwood 6 miles away it’s another world.
What I have to say is this is amazing I have actually seen some of the people in the fish shops and places like that they still are there but some places are now closed but still amazing
4 years later: At the library there was a car accident that destroyed the fence and floor That little wooden platform had collapsed My uncle (I think) owned Berry’s Bar There’s an abandoned butcher shop just across from the commercial Dynamic no longer exists Market street food place is for sale now GREGGS Peacocks is abandoned Queen street school is completely abandoned (fist time seeing it with non-metal covered windows) There is now a graffiti mural on the wall behind the statue (credit: tea2shugars)
my home town left 40 years ago how the town has changed I can remember the old shops and the museum was under the library back then my favourite shop was Ashes and Woolworths how the town has changed 😢
My grandfather William George Higgs was know as Bill to family and friends. He lived in Blaina , long before he was married . He used to tell me about the time he lived here, he had a girlfriend called 'Winnie Bright'. He also told me he and some from friends went into this abandoned house in Six Bells to stay the night and shelter from the rain, he said the place was haunted and heard noises in the bedrooms, they he and his friends checked the rooms out, nobody there, but then they would hear the noises coming from another room, and so it continued with each room they went, that's what he told me, don't know if it's true. He got married and lived in Bargoed eventually but he died in Brynmawr in March 2014 at Plasgeller nursing home.
As a resident of abertillery the town has gone under for the worst ... all that's there is hair dressers barbers , pubs and kebab shops . You have to travel out of town to do anything really . No banks here . Only main shop is tesco and Iceland. Worst place to live period
I agree the town is going downhill the factory shop is shutting down due to rent and the shops that close is a 💈 which is annoying but I hope someone buys the factory shop when it shuts and turns it into a Poundland sad it’s shutting down the factory shop

When I've been to AberT it has a really nice feel, a pleasant, likeable town. The film depicts this well!!

Amazing piece of work, well done. Love the combination of Air, and ground work and shop interviews.
Can’t ask for much more really
Lovely video showcasing the town. Great to see Medical Hall.
Jack Shore brought me here! Looks like a cracking town!

@@connorlee6248 The Coffee Bean is now closed, as is the Deja Bru cafe. At 4pm yesterday (Mon 2/8/21) the only shop open on Church Street was Greggs!

Truly disappointed that Hector’s didn’t get a part in this being the oldest, still thriving cafe in Abertillery
