I worked in Marine Corps Aviation Logistics and had many friends who were air crew on helicopters (MAG-29)...according to them, anyone who says they are not nervous are complete liars. lol Bc the brain's self-preservation is a powerful force...but the key to being a Marine is overcoming our fears to accomplish the mission. Great job guys!! This video should be added to their training schedule.

Part of "overcoming" fear is recognizing and admitting that it's there. Then facing it. The fear doesn't go away, you don't "overcome" it, you work with it. You work through it. It's far more strong to say, "yes, I'm afraid" and then facing it than to lie and say you have no fear. "No fear" is bullshit and gets people killed.

The guys who admitted fear and still jumped into the pool without question truky embodied the Marine spirit. If you think about it in order to be courageous you must first also be a little scared. If there's no fear it requires no courage to overcome the obstacle. The gentleman in the video who jumped in without being able to swim is an inspiration to me. He will go very far in life.

Did you ever swim in a large pool and did you ever try to hold your breath and dive to the bottom (trying to touch the floor 8ft down or so)? Every time I did that, my ears would pop in and I would feel fairly intense pressure up my nose trying to force water into my sinuses , my eustachian canal or my lungs. It hurts for a second but since you were holding your breath from the surface, you can just right yourself and rapidly ascend those 8 ft and feel fine. Now imagine the opposite. Now imagine doing that 20ft down.

The Marine who said something like " you're gonna die someday" resonated with me so much with my time and deployments in the Army. It's the thought process to keep you sane when every day could very well be your last.

@@andrewjohnson396 there’s a basic water survival qualification that we all have to do, but the only people who have any trouble with that are the guys that had never swam before. This isn’t even a whole lot like normal swimming though. Like he said in the video, you literally just have to stay calm and move without panicking.

Swimming is helpful but not totally necessary for Navy or Marines, simply floating much more helpful. Swimming brings up the question of where ya gonna swim to? Nearest land may be a thousand miles away. If you can float and as the old guy said floating is natural then you can splash your way over to something floating, ( that is in the event of a sinking). If you happen to fall overboard unobserved, well, you're screwed anyway.

Where was this video when I started watching your videos? It's been hidden from my view until today in November 2020.
I'm a 65-year-old man, 66 in January, and I have to tell you, this was one of the most intense videos I've ever watched, and that includes a debriefing video from Vietnam where 13 US armed forces service members started out, and only 3 survived, and we had to watch death happen in front of our eyes.
Why was this more intense? In war, there is death. It's there. Training exercises aren't supposed to be fatal. But that one could have been if those marines had been on their own.
But what got to me? When you, Destin, talked about life's anchors. That was epic.
Thank you for bringing me back to my anchors, which include my sweetheart of 43 years who means more to me than life itself. And of course, what you alluded to, truth, or for us, Christ, the rock of ages and the One and Only Way.
    God bless you!

Honestly, it's really not as bad as it may seem. I did dunker training in preparation to go on an aircraft carrier a few years back. It's actually quite a fun experience unless you are terrified of water. What you need to remember is, as military, we are programmed in basic training to follow drills and commands. Not only that, it's 10 seconds to do the drills or the master diver gets in and whips you to the surface.
You'd be amazed at what you can do when you're put into a high pressure situation.

This is a great video. In the early 1970s as a USAF helicopter pilot I had orders transferring me to a unit in Hawaii while I was attending the Command and Staff College. As part of my courses I began researching helicopters ditching at sea, preparing for my own survival in case of an emergency in my future job. Realizing the seriousness of disorientation under water, I wrote two articles about escaping from submerged helicopters. Both articles were published in military magazines before formal escape training as shown in this video became available. Dan Nicholson, LtCol, USAF Ret.

The first time I went surfing, I had just driven 3 days by myself across the country. I went to a surf shop and picked up a board. After some exhausting minutes learning stuff, I finally grabed a wave. It was a little bigger than I first though and it sent me flying forward into the water. It absolutely crushed me, shot me down to the bottom, and I remember my leg touching some rocks as I tumbled. The leash on the my ankle pulled my leg in the direction the board was headed and I had no idea where I was. There was no "up". Panic set in as I didn't have a chance to get a real breath before I entered the water. I didn't know where I was. I didn't know how to surface, I thought I was going to drown. Then suddenly I had this moment of clarity. I just told myself to sit still at the bottom, be calm, wait. I remember opening my eyes and looking up at the massive crashing wave above me, but where I was it was calm and quiet. I told myself I wasn't going to run out of breath immediately, so I took a moment to figure out the situation. I just relaxed and waited for everything to pass. I looked around again, the water above was calm. I swam up, grabbed my board, and headed for shore. I still think of this moment when I get overwhelmed by stuff. How I was able to just sit back and analyze the situation. This was one of the scariest moments of my life while I was entering the water, only to turn into one of the calmest I can remember to this day.

The whole time he's like "well if o die, at least it'll be doing something cool" and "tell my parents I wasn't as big a disappointment as they expected" but it was always in a borderline monotone voice like he was in an office or something, and very point of fact.

As I understand, he was in a helicopter clearing sea mines from vietnamese water when it crashed into the ocean. Pretty much exactly what is being trained here. What blows my mind is that not only was he able to escape, but he was able to pull out the man next to him who was unconscious from the crash. I always knew it was impressive but seeing just how intense this controlled and safe experiment is gives me even more respect for him

Did this once every 4 years during my time in the Navy. I was always very comfortable in the water. Initial qual was fun, along with the dilbert dunker. My last trip through the helo dunker just prior to retirement wasn’t so fun. The new device has different a different harness release. When the motion stopped I released the harness or so I thought. I attempted to leave the seat and it felt like some part of my gear was caught. Tried a few times but couldn’t get loose. I was upside down and blindfolded. After the emergency retract I find out one point of the five point harness did not release.

  • @karltusing5841
    @karltusing5841 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for this great memory!
I was doing that PMRF to ship ferry flight also. Loved it!
The Navy taught us that as soon as you are seated, use the hand that is closest to an exit and do the rodeo grip with that hand. That way you don’t have to think about which way the exit is when you ditch. The other thing is with the one wall being open you have immediate water pressurization. In reality that would be closed and water would be streaming through your exit ways at a high velocity, like a white water rapid. If you unbuckle your seatbelt and try to swim through that you’ll be pushed to the back of the helo and you’ll drown. So wait for the water to get chest level so you have less pressure to swim against then release your seatbelt. This gives you a much better chance to egress. The final thing was not to inflate your life vest until you’re outside the Hilo otherwise you’ll get pinned to the top and really struggle to get out.

Excellent video! You explained it very well. I did HUET in 2019 and I was at first terrified of it as I almost drowned as a child. After the first dunk I was good. No need to pinch my nose, no worries about inhaling water. Just grabbed my restraints, crashed, then rodeo my seat, unclip, seat slide, feel for the window frame, push and swim up. I feel so much more comfortable and confident flying during work trips now.
