Top bait tip. Use maize instead of corn. Prep it then store it in a bucket until it develops a clear slime. I use a bucket with a lid and can tell when it starts to ferment when the lid domes a bit. This will draw fish like crazy. You can tweak this prep method by using ruby maize to increase the sugar content. Or by adding bait flavours etc.

I study freshwater fish and I fish for carp. Corn is digestible for fish, however it might not appear that way since the kernels may not break down completely. This also happens in humans and it is completely harmless. Even if the kernel doesn’t break down, fish are able to pass it through their digestive track with little ease. Corn is also shown to increase the mass of fish when used as feed, so corn isn’t really a harmful bait for fish.

@@jaredgarza5624 you can use deer corn. Carp have pharyngeal teeth which help crush foods like mollusks, crustaceans, and seeds. Plus their stomach acid is strong enough to dissolve deer corn. Also, the corn won’t expand in their stomach since it doesn’t have enough water or time to inflate. I don’t use deer corn since it’s more convenient to buy canned corn, but there shouldn’t be any issues with using either. If I do use deer corn, I like to let it soak so you get bigger kernels for hair rigs.

The majority of the diet of the channel cats that i work with is, infact, corn based with some other things such as shrimp meal and fish meal mixed in for other dietary needs of the fish, usually all mixed together into small chunks or pellets. Take a handful and dunk it in water and work it in to a putty and use it on a treble hook 🪝😉 then you can keep the smaller fish off the bait. The carp will smash the bait in back of its mouth when it feels the hook it can't spit out the treble..works like a charm.

One good technique I use for carp is a weightless piece of bread on size 6-7 j hook. Tear or cut off a piece of bread around 2-3 inches in width. Put the hook through the piece of bread twice and wrap it around the hook, leaving the tip sitting just above the bread. squish the bread around the hook, only gently, enough to squeeze most of the air out of the bread but not too much otherwise it won't be able to expand and "fluff out" in the water, which carp love.
Another thing is carp are actually sensitive to the resistance made by the sinker and tight line. Lighter the weight on the line the better, and having some slack in the line helps with creating as little resistance as possible. Carp generally move around when they eat so you will notice the line starting to straighten when they take the bait. This is when you pick the rod up and Either wait for the fish to pull out the slack or wind in a bit of the slack and set the hook. I've caught some monster fish using this technique.

Carps clean the poluted water. Australia killed the Great Barrier Reef with phosphorus ( sewage and agricultural runoff).
Those corals live there because the area is soo poor in phosphorus due to to the age of the land.
Even a lot of plants in Australia are sensitive to phosphorus, like the Proteaceae wich are poisoned by little phosphorus.
Silver carps that are hated are the only tool to clean phosphorus. They could have saved the reefs of Australia if the fresh water was cleaned by them before being released in the ocean.

In Europe Carpfishing is a thing and with a viarity of really specialized methods.
They love theire carps. Anyways corn is digestable by carps. only the shell of corn is being pooped out. Often there is a mix of corn, tiger nuts and hemp seeds used (coocked and fermented for 2 days) to creat food carpets for them on spots they pass by. Then used armoatized hook bait on these carpets to attrackt the fish. Often its used over multiple days with additional feeding the spot so that some people use like 50 kilos on such a trip (some do even use way more) to keep the carp on the spot. I am skeptical about these method because its not sustainable for the health of the waterbody. but yes. it works.

In the UK, some fisheries don’t allow the use of corn because they say that the carp (and other species) dont digest 100% of the corn properly and therefor when whole pieces of corn pass through the digestive system and out the other end, other fish come along and pick up the non digested kernels which have the potential to spread a disease that the original fish may have been carrying. Beside the fact that this kind of makes a lot of sense, corn is an excellent bait.

@@dimlylit3086 you refuse to believe that people are dumb enough to think that rice will swell up inside of a bird as if it were a living flying rice cooker? I remember hearing about people who would insist on using bird seed instead of rice because if you don't understand the tradition behind the rice, screw it use something else. Of course this was some years ago and back then people thought that day care centers were staffed by witches who regularly levitated in front of children and the whole nation was on the edge of its seat trying to locate the bat boy. Simpler times, ya know.

The reason why we cant digest the outside shells of kernels of corn is because theyre high in cellulose, which is something that the human digestive system cant digest. However, a study called "The gut microbiome and degradation enzyme activity of wild freshwater fishes influenced by their trophic levels" found cellulose digesting bacteria in the gut microbiome of certain herbivorous, omnivorous, and filter feeding fish. However, carnivorous fish had a much lower percentage of cellulose digesting bacteria on average which would likely cause the stories people have heard about corn clogging up the digestive tract of fish.

On another note I have had good luck making homemade boilies it's been better than corn for me.
    1 cup Flour
    1 cup corn meal
    1/8 cup Sugar
Mix with water until doughy, then make out a bunch of small dough balls.
For a liter of water into a pot and pour a liter of corn syrup.
Heat the water until the corn syrup is dissolved.
Then throw all of your dough balls in the water.
Proceed cooking until they all float to the top.
    Done!!!!
Just like with corn throw some in the area of the water and then put one on a hook and cast it in the pile.
They will eat all the hookless ones and not think twice before biting into your hook on yours as long as they don't hit your hook first.

Well, in humans the hull of a corn kernel is indigestible as our bodies lack a way of breaking down cellulose molecules quick enough- same reason you can’t eat grass. Carp on the other hand, do have the ability break down cellulose molecules, grass carp for example get this name because they can clear a choked out pond with ease, the reason? Because their body is designed to eat plant matter. That said, the hull of a corn kernel is much easier to break down than that of an aquatic grass stem’s cell wall. I’m no marine biologist, but the physical evidence suggests an overwhelming- DUH.
Considering the percentage of dry weight cellulose in the cell wall of a corn kernel is 28.7% cellulose- the percentage for grass is a bit different considering how diverse the group is, but for both aquatic and terrestrial grass cell walls, 35-45% of the dry weight is cellulose.

Used to go freshwater trout fishing. Canned corn was the perfect bait. These were usually state raised stocked fish. Whether the corn looked like a fish egg or the pellets they grew up on didn't matter. Once caught, the skillet solved all digestive issues. You could chum them with corn but fine gravel worked better. Throw the gravel, and the trout all thought it was feeding time back at the hatchery.

Corn isn't harmful to carp, but if you're feeding them too much, it might give them diarrhea. Corn is a common ingredient in fish meals, used to feed carp, catfish, pike, and trout, among other species. It is also added to some commercial diets to boost growth.

Depends. Sweetcorn is going straight through no issue, But maize/feed corn needs to be boiled and then soaked for atleast 24 hours for the carp to digest it proper. same goes for hemp and tigernuts etc

The real reason is not the fish digesting issues. The issue is that when people fish with corn they tend to throw handfuls of corn into the water, this is called chumming. Chumming gives the fisherman an unfair advantage over the fish and CHUMMING is illegal in some states,

About corn and carp, corn is the best bait and sweet corn is the easiest bait to digest if coocked properly wich means if people saw carp with undigested corn its probably only becoz the corn is uncoocked and even then its coocked it doesn affect the fish at all.

I am from the Netherlands and we fish a lot with corn and it is totally safe for carp and other species. However, it is safe to use canned/soft sweetcorn. If you use the hard feeding corn, you need to soak it in water for 24 hours and then cook for like 20-30 minutes. Then its totally fine. But if you use the hard corn, yes you will get trouble. Either I think both makes sence ;-)

As an ecologist, many of us think the rule is a little dumb. In certain conditions of trout fishing in other states like South dakota, there are some instances where it's illegal to have any "human food" bait even in your possession. Now nobody will call you on it, but technically you can get fined for something like having a snickers bar in your pocket in those cases. Even if you're clearly only using something like worms as bait.

They’ve been using sweetcorn or maize(if you want to give it its proper name) for carp fishing, since the sixties, and I know, that it used to be used for catching grey mullet(thick & thin lip varieties) from around the sewage outlets(which is why the mullet got a taste for it) around the coast(Cornwall uk), before they banned raw sewage from being discharged as a norm……..
But, as far as carp are concerned, I think you will find, that they have grinding pads, in their gullets, which are designed to grind up all sorts of vegetable matter, and so, I don’t think that sweetcorn is going to be a problem…….

In my country its easily the highest farmed fish.Back in the days before high protein pellets it was the main thing to feed farm fish. And even nowdays huge amount of these farms still using corn to feed the stock. On the other hand most predator fish digest bones of other fish, clams ,small mammals and even birds and they dont even look at corn laying on the bottom... ofc its my experience maybe na spieces differ

The problem lies in catch-and-release fishing when using corn as bait, if a fish takes the bait, it may swallow the hook, which can be difficult to remove without causing injury or death to the fish.

I know it’s an old video, but in Europe, there is a large carp fishing community. Corn isn’t a problem for the fish as long it is cooked. There are many people which say, that it isn’t a problem even if it’s raw, but there are votes for both sites. But cooked corn defenetly isn’t harmful for for fish. We have large carps in Germany and French and they eat corn their whole lives whitout problems.

It's actually illegal to fish in any body of water that's more than 3 cubic meter or the size of like 4 medium-large bathtub.
The reason being that not only that there will be a chance that there could be an endangered species (bacteria, fungus, etc) present at that exact spot, but it also related to some kind of Environmental problem that is to lengthy to list all of them here. This law is effective in 52 state in united state and you could be jailed for as long as 30 years in prison or fined for as much $30.000

Last I heard about it from the dfw biologist, it was specifically the issue with trout, and other small panfish that are farm raised and released. Something to do with the feed they use, makes trout eat corn kernels and they can't digest the corn kernel skins.

    Fun fact 2:
Fresh corn is good only when water is warm and in small amount.
When it's canned or cooked it's okey no matters what time of year it is. Raw corn can expand in stomach too much destroying fish stomach.

  • @itsawildrk2360

Their stomachs explode from the corn. They cannot digest parts of the corn kernels, which end up sitting in their gut. The fish sometimes stop eating and die from starvation, and sometimes their stomachs just explode after eating loads of the corn used as chum. I'd recommend using oats as chum instead. Corn on a hair rig is fine, since it's not much and can be passed (pooped) easier.
