- ARCA’s 1990 season opened with its biggest race, the Hard Rock Bet 200 at Daytona. ARCA was gaining a reputation as a great stepping stone into NASCAR. Despite being the biggest and most anticipated race of the season, the race would be overshadowed by one devastating incident. After a horrible accident, Slick Johnson would be put on life support and be fighting for his life. While under caution, chaos ensued after Bob Keselowski was spun into Kevin Gundaker’s car. A paramedic who was tending to Kevin flew through the air, and seemed to have been killed instantly. Just 75 laps into the race, two men were fighting for their lives.

Slick Johnson did pass away in the end. It was a miracle that the track worker survived- and actually made a full recovery.
3 days later he died
@@KevinPerry-wi5dw Slick Johnson, yes- sadly. That type of impact was incredibly bad back then.
I met Mike Staley at a fire conference about 10 years ago. He was working for the CDC at the time. He talks about the accident and shows the Rescue 911 segment. He tells about Slick Johnson, who he believes already had a head/neck injury from the initial crash. His recovery is absolutely amazing because the doctor wanted to amputate his left arm. He was left-handed and had to learn to use his right hand. If you ever get to hear him speak, it is well worth the time. As a firefighter and racing fan and former crew member, the story hit home. Love your channel. Keep it up
Looking back I'm still always amazed at how long "racing to the line" was part of NASCAR. It's such a simple safety measure and who knows how many lives have been saved, or injuries avoided now that the field is frozen under yellow.
I remember when it changed. Dale Jarrett in the UPS 88 car spun out and was sitting on the track sideways, drivers door facing on coming traffic. I just can’t recall with certainty which track it was. Maybe New Hampshire? Early 2000’s

@@D2RCR thanks
@@D2RCR I looked it up. Definitely not safe racing back to the line. I see I remembered a little bit wrong, Jarrett wasn’t sitting drivers side to traffic but it was New Hampshire. Thanks
I remember Reacue 911 did a segment on this
Yup first place i saw it
Yeah. That was a shocking accident.
That's where I saw this too. Had no idea it was Brad's dad who got spun into the paramedic though until I saw this video.
@@ilackedtheheart I did. I remembered his car number
I never knew that this accident was on the TV show? I used to watch that show all the time when I was a kid.
I was watching this race when all this happened. One of the most terrifying accidents I've ever seen
It was actually Gundaker that climbed out of his car and collapsed on the ground
This may have been the crash that was on rescue 911
It was yes
Wow, I remember watching that show as a kid. There was an episode about a story in my city. Now I have to try to find it.
@@crazydrummer181 i’m not 100% sure this though I may be thinking of another incident. If you just search for something like rescue 911 Daytona. As that as the name the episode, you should find it
Yep
The Slick Johnson and Mike Staley tragedy that Staley survived reminds me of Don Williams and Joe Frasson crash
It was featured on Rescue 911 with William Shatner back in the day
It was the ARCA's worst crash in Daytona racing of the 90's
Great video…thanks.
Damn. I didnt realize both bobby wawak and bobby dotter had to dive out of moving cars on fire at daytona then. Both are hometown guys to me. Bobby especially. He was literally from my town.
Wawak i mean lol
I remember when this was an episode of Rescue 911 back in the day
That Rescue 911 segment was shocking to watch when Keselowski's car lost control and crashing into them. Took me a long time to figure out why was Johnson mentioned until I saw his car crashing hard in the wall and getting hit by other cars.
that was the same location as where Dale's car ended up
I remember seeing this as a kid.
I believe 1000 ways to die had this on their show. They would sometimes use real videos that did not end in fatalities since anyone could have died.
The Rescue 911 crash. Absolutely horrific.
With the obvious need of so much help where this incident happened, I wonder how long Slick Johnson was witting in his car before they even realized he was in critical condition as well? The two abulances headed that way quickly turned when Mike Staley was hit. Such a bad day for the sport.
Only arca would they wreck under caution even to this day
Americans seem to have problems racing in left turning curves, all the accidents happen in those. They should put a chicane before every left turning curve. And just look at those outside run off areas... or oh, you can't look them because there's none. That's just ridiculous, like it was from the 50s. Don't they care about the safety there at all?
WHO SPUN KESOLOWSKI???
Graham Taylor
Accidents Will Happen
This is one of bob kesoloski's only mention in racing dude sucked in every series above arca
You're not the sharpest tool are u? But u certainly are the biggest. Bob did a lot in racing. U probably flip burgers for a living 🤷🏻♀️ and live with your parents
He did at least get a truck win in 1997
A Keselowski doing something stupid and causing problems? Apple, tree, etc.
