The only thing I would want from NASCAR is to do the F1 TV approach, where NASCAR would control the broadcast, making it more uniform, and commentators alongside with the TV ones. Also, no ads during racing, as I've grown quite tired of having what feels like less than 1 minute of action and then back to a commercial break.

Also tbh if there's a caution, nothing much is happening outside of cars circling behind the safety car on maybe 40mph for few laps until the pitlane opens so switching to commercials at that time is justified.
What I would like to see though is more side-by-side view during green flag runs on regular basis, if not every race. That way TV broadcasters can run ads while still allowing fans to watch the race as it happens at the same time.
You just couldn't not show ads on American-based sports because it's the culture of America and capitalism as a whole, for better or worse.

    • @maxb148
      @maxb148 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@DannyPlaysStuff But with other American sports, it is alot easier to take breaks where it doesn't interrupt the viewers experience of the game. MLB you can take breaks between innings, NFL during timeouts, after points are scored, after punts, etc.
Nascar already has stage cautions built in, it isn't that hard to have the adverts placed there. Also couldn't they have the split view adverts where the advert takes up most of the screen with a small inset showing the race still so atleast if they are going to show adverts during the race, people don't miss everything that's going on?

Im okay with that. Bad stuff happens in live broadcasts. Sure, you want to minimize them, handle them gracefully, but just simply having a technical issue? Fine.
My problem with Fox isnt the errors, its the everyday quality of the broadcasts. When you are coming in to the GEICO restart zone, the most exciting moment of the sport, and then they cut away to a kid in the stands until the cars are past the start finish line. Every restart. Every race. That isnt a one off glitch, its not a missed shot of an unpredictable aspect of the sport, like a wreck or a fight, no. It's a terrible, intentional, production policy on the most predictable and exciting aspect of the sport.

I might be in the minority, but I honestly prefer the tower over the ticker. The ticker only ever showed, like, 4-5 drivers at once, and it was constantly shifting the names around, so I had 0 clue who was where, and if I missed a driver I wanted to note, I was SoL until I paid too much attention to the ticker as it cycled back, and not on the track. With the tower, I know where way more drivers are (though outside the top-15 feels like it takes forever to switch). I agree it takes up a lot of space on-screen, but it can be reworked to look better

In the era of streaming packages I really loathe having to watch NASCAR on Fox. Most other major motorsports offer some type of streaming option to watch commercial free.
But your point about the cameras is totally on point. They have missed so many incidents on track by cutting to commercials. FFS, just cut to commercial when a yellow comes out. I'm so tired of watching stage break laps under yellow on FOX. I'm just about ready to stop watching races live and just watch the NASCAR TH-cam the next day because I despise Fox's broadcast so much.

Also, FOX treats Nascar races like they are a comedy show, not a sporting event. The cartoon characters of the drivers are ridiculous. And they force Michael Waltrip & Clint Bowyer to act like jackasses on Sunday. Listen to them during a qualifying session. They can be good analysts. They even had Bob Pockrass acting like a drunken fool in one of their skits last year!

I work as technical director in broadcasting in Brazil and I have to say that what I fear is going on is that, as Nascar Productions taking over, things like what you said are going to be even worse and FOX is just the first to take the hit. Soon the networks will not be the responsible for the audio nd coming from the track, besides their booth talent. And I'm pretty sure Nascar Productions is not up to the task yet. They are trying to increase the number of remote productions and when you do that, your product on the air will suffer. Even Formula 1 can't do it perfectly. The race at Imola was full of mistakes. I'm not very optimistic about the future of Nascar on TV. And you guys at the US don't even have to deal with the terrible international feed, with even more technical mistakes.

This is exactly why you should be excited for Prime and TNT, and even more so especially if Jr. has a say in the creative direction and production for the broadcast. And if they manage to get Bestwick to do the play by play I’ll be sold on it even more.

One of the tipping points for me was last year at North Wilkesboro. Clint wanted the on board camera to stay a bit longer so you could hear a specific throttle pattern or something. Instead they immediately cut away and you can hear Clint chuck his pen in frustration. Perhaps the commentators need to take notes from F1 on how to keep excitement during times of little to no passing. Apparently their broadcasts just lose their minds whenever there's a pass.

The original coverage was better. FOX sports was great then. The telecasts were well-directed and the moving ticker was easy to follow. I don't know why they changed to be so bland. Then they started the cartoon graphics. But the biggest issue is the camera work! What used to be cutting edge isn't cutting the mustard. Need to get that direction.

RE:- Color commentators. From what I've seen on the Xfinity coverage, once they retire from driving, Brad Keselowski & Joey Logano will make a GREAT commentary team. Until then, IDK who could do the job better than what we've got. Maybe Tony Stewart, but he has other interests taking up his time...

8:56 Back in MY day, theyd show the race in a little box at the corner, and if something major happened they could come back from commercial early and finish them when there was a pause/after explaining what happened/whatever.
I actually really liked that as a compromise, it was small enough on the screen that you really couldn't NOT see the ad, so the advertising money still comes in, and the fans aren't left completely in the dark during the increasingly longer ad breaks.
For SOME reason Ive noticed that way less than when I was a kid in the mid 2000s...

I can't help but think back to how FOX covered Kyle Larson's Talladega flip in 2019. That was the first time I felt like the FOX broadcast was being managed by aliens who didn't understand what racing was or how to cover it. Yes, the main cameras infamously focused on the leaders instead of the crash, but the broadcast didn't even show all the footage and angles they DID have; there was some footage that didn't get shown until that week's Radioactive segment. Add to that a general tone in the postrace that felt like it wanted to hurry past both a super popular Chase Elliott win and, you know, one of the biggest wrecks of the year, and FOX came across like they didn't know what they even WANTED to be doing with their coverage. Or, as you put it, "they just fundamentally don't understand what people want to see".

(can't even finish it), but the rest of his work was fine. Glad you mentioned the "voice" aspect of it. Mike Joy is about the only one I like to listen too. The all driver broadcast? Worst races to listen to all year. As far as the broadcasts in 2025 goes, I won't be signing up to Prime to watch NASCAR, or any other streaming service, so I hope there'll be simulcasting or I'll be free to do other things next year. But that's ok, I'll be 72 by then I need to get out more anyway.

I'm glad that though that you seem cool with Fox's new graphics; like... aside from the aforementioned fuck-ups like with the 98th gear shit, I feel like I'm the only one who thinks that their graphics actually look cool and stylish. Not so much the graphic-novel-esque driver pics, but more the ticker with the bold numbers and the font choice and such; I think THAT looks cool.

Regarding the adverts: This is probably mostly an issue of my European brain which has grown fat and lazy watching races without commercials. But ad breaks, even with the side-by-side split, play havoc with my ability to comprehend what is going on. Indycar, IMSA, NASCAR - all of it is a struggle to watch because by the time coming back from adverts my brain has caught up to the race then the next advert spot begins!
Honestly, with hockey they can just work adverts into play - it works fine. But for racing it really doesn't work imo.

As a kid in the early 2000s I would have agreed Nascar on Fox was the best. But now as an adult who from time to time puts on old races from my childhood, NBC was definitely better even then on rewatches. Love DW, but he was no Benny Parsons, match him with Wally and Bestwick, and man those races are magic to rewatch. Thats not saying Fox was bad, they were just both really good broadcasting teams in Nascars best era.
