You played pinball. I shot a bomb arrow

You shot a bomb arrow. I put the ball on a long stick and tried to slam it into the target and then failed and then used a bomb arrow anyway.

On the pinball shrine my contraption missed the ball but broke and part of it went flying into the target which somehow worked

I can't recall any other game making me feel that child-like feeling of wonder quite like Tears of the Kingdom.
The abilities look pretty simple but they're very deep and well thorought:
The moment i realized you can fuse an oversized spikeball to a stick i fell in love with fuse.
I remember spending half an hour in a few shrines trying to build a wacky contraption over and over until it finally worked, and when it did, i felt amazing, and i said to myself "i'm a fking genius".
One time I had to elevate a Korok but was too lazy to make a hot air balloon i came with an idea, move him high up with ultrahand, keep him there for a few seconds, and then recall him, so while he was in midair, i used ascend on the nearby platform and grabbed him with ultrahand from the top. I wasn't sure if it would work and it did, and honestly, that dumb korok felt way more rewarding than a lot of final bosses from the latests games i've played.
This game is an absolute gem, and i've loved every second of it.

The Fuse ability made me less anxious about exploring the world. Instead of being worried of breaking my weapons on a camp, now I can go in there guns blazing, knowing I'll get enough materials to replenish my arsenal. It also helps keeping a variety of weapons I can build and use anytime.

The crafting is very fun because you're the one who's actually crafting. You're not just selecting stuff and then automatically have a crafted item after pressing that craft button.

    • @TearTheRoof0ff
      @TearTheRoof0ff ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yeah, you're actually physically putting stuff together that interacts according the the physics engine. What's more, once you've created something, you can *then* save it for the more convenient menu-driven approach.

I love TotK for being the kind of game where you could just go in and take down a Talus by smacking its weak point a few times with a good rock breaker weapons in seconds.
… Or you could spend over an hour building a ridiculous contraption to try to blow it to pieces in safety, only for the Talus tossing one of its arm coincide with the moment your cannon fires and your machine self-destructs, lol.

I don't think I've ever felt quite the satisfaction in a game like when I built a literal bomber plane and absolutely demolished an enemy camp in totk
I always find myself laughing like a little goblin whenever the elaborate craft I put together just works, exactly like I want it to
The system is simple enough so that anything you build usually works first try, but it feels complex enough so that it always feels satisfying when you built something succesfully

The issue of "ticking a box" in triple A title is one that is much worse and spreads much further than crafting. Things like obnoxious climbing sections, skill trees, or player choices that have little to no impact on the story are some of the things that just NEED to be in every game even when it doesn't fit. The same way that delivering on mechanics is a great thing, showing some restraint on which to include is sometimes even greater.
Even phenomenal games like Doom Eternal and God of War are guilty of some of these.

  • @fieratheproud

Oh the vechiles in this game are SO much fun... I don't use them enough bc I still find myself mostly just running everywhere, or getting on a horse. Maybe knce I have more battries I'll use vechiles in the overworld more.
...after all, one of the Proving Grounds shrines helped me discover the joys of vehicular manslaughter and building war crimes.

Glad you mentioned Horizon. That game represents the quintessential "bad crafting system"
It does not encourage creativity nor does it expand or enhance the mechanics of the game. It also does not expand the world or how you navigate it. It also does not succeed in providing scarcity and resource management.
That game might have benefited more from being akin to a looter shooter genre like Borderlands, as it would be a MUCH greater incentive to fight the machines while retaining the overall feel of the game

When I watched the trailer that first showed off the car I was disappointed because I thought that it would be boring menuing to create only the generic cars that are pre made by Nintendo. Of course they made it into the most open and creative mechanic in the game.

@3:11 Sure Nintendo made them usable as well (through MORE menu-ing) and I still didn't use them. Simply because there are more efficient and better things to do, than the "fun ones" that entertain the initial notion of freedom and "more options". I my inventory is filled with things I never used.. again. Except Bombs, Fire Fruit and the Bloom Flower.

The "hoarder goblin" mentality is something not easily solved by game design alone. There's a reason they say players will optimize the fun out of a game when given the choice.
In other words, making it so all those excess materials have uses now doesn't mean players will choose to use them. In fact, many still don't.
If players are given a ton of freedom in a game, then it also becomes their responsibility to curate the experience in a way that makes it enjoyable.

It was a long stick, spears have sharp points. The mistake in prong numbers in understandable. I know the game calls long sticks “spear” weapon types, but in the inventory it will then say spear after fusing.
