I agree with Jon. I'd rather watch a somewhat directionless, silly video of Scott having fun on an adventure than a hardcore, focused painting tutorial. For me personally, I don't have a lot of friends who enjoy painting like I do. It can feel lonely. I like the videos of people having fun, hanging out, enjoying the hobby and each other rather than feeling like I'm alone, in school. Hope that makes sense. Love your vids and good luck!

This is me too. I picked this hobby back up as an adult since I have the means to purchase models and go at it properly, not like when I was a kid and would get one box of skaven clanrats for Christmas.
I don’t play the game and just paint and don’t have friends into the same thing, so I share the hobby through the internet.
Watching the videos that feels like I’m just chilling with a buddy working on a project together and having a relaxed time is what I look for.

@@claymanning2729 I miss the days of being able to see what your buddies are working on as they do it. Hands covered in Partha Paints, sourcebooks everywhere. Mountain Dew cans stacked to the ceiling. Grownups need empty-headed hangouts, too, dammit.

Roman: Seems I am almost unprofessional with your calculations. I do not paint many boxarts, do not teach at conventions (only in my own studio), try army painting once in a while, won major prizes ... really enjoyed that Podcast, here with Johannes in the car, back from Monte, but we think you are missing out on some points about 'profession' in my and Johannes eyes: Remember that scene with the blacksmiths and fisherman in the movie 300? Everyone telling their profession? And then the the 300 Spartans got asked. It was clear what their profession was. They learned their profession. This it what makes professionalism.
You are mixing up success with learning a profession. Success can be achieved and reviewed differently, like you do here, from your perspective of your own bubble.

    • @ROMANLAPPATMINIATUREART

Hey Roman and Johannes! Jon here (so no Scott imput!)
I think you make a very important point in that people often equate "professional' with 'success'. And I definately missed an opportunity to clarify that setting a goal and achieving your own definition of 'success' shouldn't be confused with being a 'professional'. Worrying about labels and titles takes away from the joy that we should be focusing on.
Cheers, looking forward to hearing about Monte!

Ok Scott, my raw answer to why I watch John’s video’s more than yours… it simply comes down to relatability for me. I relate to his humour, we both have kids the same age, and I like how he brings the sense of relatability into his videos.
Your videos feel more like an art school student trying to bring too much education and professionalism into it.
I appreciate some of what you bring to the table, but I’m never striving for display level quality, where it feels like that’s what you are selling. I play board games, not war games. I did like your recent video of the difference in quality in board game miniatures though.
Just one man’s perspective. I do love the dynamic of you two together though and have a lot of appreciation for you in this a space.

I am really happy that Scott has got the chance to go and meet Roman, it's clear that it means a lot. I would really enjoy a video more about how you think about your projects and your level of expectations. I think doing that would allow you to kind of do what Jon was talking about, where you can film whatever you want and just piece it together rather than being TOO intentional so that you can really enjoy being in the moment. I know you have already done your trip by the time I am commenting, so I look forward to seeing what you did.

I agree with Scott on the 'Hobby Painting College' thing 100%. Hobby Painting with a focus on sculpting, army painting, speed painting, display, dioramas, etc. There are -so- many different skills that can go into this hobby and it is so incredibly broad that you can find experts in completely different aspects that may have little crossover other than the basics.

I think the most fitting definition of professional in this context is 'engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation rather than as a pastime', which makes a big chunk of professional painters the ones working for companies that do comissions I am quite sure. Also you two are professional TH-camrs, not painters when I look at it this way. :D
You might soon of course cover this, I just had to take a break from work and figured I'd comment at that time, thanks for keeping me company here at this place where I am engaged in a specified activity as my main paid occupation.

As for content, I worked at a couple newspapers and wrote for another. One was an Alternative Weekly and the other was a small town's weekly. I learned the difference between the stories that needed to be told and the stories your readers want to read.
Another look at it is something I recall George Clooney doing and talking about is making commercial movies to pay for the movies he wants to make with stories he felt needed to be told. So you can tell the stories you want to tell. But you need to do the commercial stories.
The Alternative Newsweekly has entertainment news that people want to read and support with Ads, so the cover story can be about important issues like local area polluters, that no one is buying an ad to support. But the subject might try to buy an ad to kill the story.

There is a difference I think in the arguement that mini painting can be Professional vs Job. You can be a professional in mini painting whether or not you get paid for it. The same goes you could get paid for mini painting though you may not be a profesional at it. You wouldn't say that someone who has won a golden demon is not a professional at the hobby. Where as if you are a mini painter who has income from which you can live comfortably on that income, it could be classed as a job (albeit one that you enjoy) as you have to declare your income at tax time. Both professional and job can be the same thing, though being one doesn't mean you are/have both.

Definition of a "Professional": A person engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation. My input: Even if someone receives 1 USD/EUR etc for painting, is immediately a professional. Also, I live in Greece (Europe doesn't cover it due to the many differences from country to country) and we all thought its easier going full time commission painting in the US 😲

(my opinion) People in general watch your videos to be entertained with learning as a side benefit. I watch to support your work now but don't really enjoy the content anymore. It can come across as you don't like making videos but have to. All just opinions and not meant to be a personal attack. Much love and appreciation for your work over the years.

1:29:00 So when it comes to teaching a skill, you don't have to be very proficient in that skill. Sometimes the ability to understand something and impart that knowledge is a skill itself. Think of some of the most prolific sports coaches. A lot of them played professionally, but were mediocre at best. You find this a lot in baseball. At least it was the case when I was really into sports a decade ago, but in any case I think it still stands. Just because someone cannot do the thing itself exceptionally well, does not mean they cannot teach it to you.

Something that always bothers me a bit regarding the "professional" rating, is to link this to success.
    1. Whether it is in painting, photography or dancing, which are artistic fields I'm very active in, being a professional doesn't automaticly imply you're good at it. or that you're successful in every aspects.
    2. Is the sucess linked to international recognition? Does it come from your peers? Is it being good with communication and presenting yourself? Is it having a certain set of skills?
As an example. Some of the best dancers I've seen were the worst teachers I had, yet they made a living out of it and were professionals because they were famous internationally by winning awards but they weren't interested at all in the teaching process, they did because it was the only way to make money in this field. I'm a professional dancer as in I own a dance school and I am a very good teacher, but I don't have the "international success" or the same skills that some of the others have.
Being a professionnal in a field comes with a range, and I would usually define it by saying that if you make enough money out of your field to sustain at least part of your living, you'd be a professional. The recognition may be part of the equation (which makes it easier to "sell" what you produce), but it's not a necessity. Being "good" at it or in every aspect of it, isn't always a necessity

For me there are two axes : beginner - expert and amateur - professional. The first one is skill and the second earnings. You can definitely be the greatest painter in the world and still be an amateur because you're doing it only for your own enjoyment. And you can also earn the most but not be well respected for your actual skill. It's tricky that 'amateur' has the double meaning of unpaid and not very good.
It also goes back to your gameshow idea. There are so many strands to the hobby and it's entirely possible to be great at one and suck at others, or just be completely uninterested in certain aspects of the broader hobby space.

I'm going to try to say this in the least negative way possible, but I doubt I'll succeed.
I am very confused with the difference between how Miniac feels about his videos vs. the kind of videos he makes. I'll be frank, I watch TUP for Ninjon, because I love everything he does, and I feel like his energy is so positive. Even when Ninjon pushes people out of their comfort zone with his content (Example being "why im not painting leviathan" etc.) he still does his absolute best to show people there are other ways instead of really hating on something. It's focusing your energy towards the positive and letting the "negativity" be more by omission.
Meanwhile, you have Miniac who will SO confidently make a negative video about a game he's played like three times and wonder why people don't connect with it. I worked as a video game designer for five years and a producer for one, I would NEVER be able to so confidently shit on things the way Miniac does. I actually was kind of enjoying his thirty minute board game miniature ranking video until I realized that sprinkled within were negative little comments about the game play of each of the games.
Maybe this is just me, but Ninjon' videos are positive, high quality, funny, and ALWAYS leave me wanting more. I think focusing on "oh its just GW minis or you lose" is missing the point entirely.

      I appreciate the feedback.
About critical reviews: I think people in general should be allowed to share their opinion about stuff w/o getting shamed as long as they adequately explain where they're coming from. In the AoS video you cite I explain how many games I've played and that my perspective is that of a beginner. If people want to hear the review of someone coming from that angle, they may, if not, they don't have to. If I sound confident, it's because I'm merely explaining how I feel about a game. That's literally the only thing I can feel confident about because it's my perspective. Criticism is just that. It's anecdotal, it's personal, it's someone's perspective. It's not "hate" as you put it. If a film critic dislikes a movie, that doesn't discourage me from seeing it. It might change my expectations but I know that as an adult individual, it's my job to still experience that thing if I want to form an opinion about it. People need to emotionally detach from the things they engage in enough to hear that criticism without it feeling like it's targeting them. I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings or destroy something anyone loves. I'm just trying to share my perspective and it can be taken or left. You are allowed to disagree with my criticism, 100%, but to come after people being critical at all is not helpful.
About my confusion with people not connecting with videos: We were talking about a star wars video that has a low view count. You cited my board game review and my AoS review, both of which have a much healthier view count relatively speaking. Your distaste for my reviews is not related to the video I thought people didn't connect with. There were no critical reviews in the star wars video.
"oh its just GW minis or you lose": My audience is largely people that enjoy GW products. To give them an anchor for what I consider to be a "perfect" board game from a model quality sense, I used Cursed City and Blackstone Fortress. I called it "the gold standard". My subscribers are keenly familiar with the quality of those products so I wanted to set the bar so they understood better how the various games compared in a relative sense. Also, there WAS a board game that were just as good as GW which was the important conclusion of the video; cheaper per model, come pre-assembled, and are just as nicely designed.
About being bubbly and positive: Sometimes I'm not mentally in a place where I'm happy-go-lucky. I feel that it would be dishonest to pretend to be that way when I am not feeling that way.

The DOTA 2 Prizepool was super low this year because Valve has decided that they aren't doing battlepasses anymore and the compendium this year did not have any worthwhile MTX in it at all so almost no one bought it when the Battlepass was the main generator for the prizepool. They said that it's so there is more content spread throughout the year instead of it only being centered around the International but only time will tell to see what they end up doing.

You talk about different painters, I look back to my running/racing days decades ago. There are distance runners, middle distance, and sprinters.
To compare athletic endeavors the Olympics had the Decathlon. The specialists would smoke these athletes, but they could compete in all 10. The Ironman triathlon was created over a bar bet, as runners, cyclists, and swimmers were arguing over which athletes were thr fittest.
So what would a mixed format painting contest look like? A leader, a display monster, and a support squad?

I don't think talent really comes into it when it comes to deciding someone being a professional in a field. Generally speaking, the core concept of the term is that you operate within a profession, which just means you are making money consistently within that sphere. So you could argue, that unless the field is large enough and lucrative enough for someone to make money from competitions enough to at least supplement their yearly income in a meaningful way evenif they aren't winning every contest they enter, then a painter who is prolific contestee isn't a professional mini painter until they utilize their talent to also teach or make content or display paint on a regular basis. There's a big difference between being a master of a skill and being a professional at it. There are plenty of talentless hacks in every profession and you still have to call them a professional within a field, even if you wish they'd put a stop to the torment. Plenty of terrible car mechanics out there forgetting to tighten the oil filter and yet they are still professional mechanics at the end of the day. You just hope at the end of the day that if someone is negligent enough the profession itself will discard them, which I think is where the caviat of consistency comes in.
There's also a more reductive way to look at it, which is to say if youa re teaching people how to paint miniatures you aren't aprofessional mini painter, you are a professional TEACHER. You aren't a pro mini painter, you're a professional CONTENT CREATOR. Which ultimately leads to the conclusion that, since you can't REALLY make enough money winning contets, because the ecyosystem just isn't there in the hobby, the only real way to be a professional mini painter would be box art and commission painting. But like I said, I think that's reductive, and not really a useful argument to have.

I think this is the definition most people use Esquire ( especially Bill And Teds version)
Esquire: a young Nobel who , in training for Knighthood, acted as an attendant to a knight

    • @type6
      @type6 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ScaleCreep 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@type6. According to the Oxford language dictionary, the North American definition is , in fact, a Lawyer, while the Historical is the young noble. But that’s just my source. Miriam Webster list as follows.
      1
: a member of the English gentry ranking below a knight
      2
: a candidate for knighthood serving as shield bearer and attendant to a knight
      3
-used as a title of courtesy often by attorneys usually placed in its abbreviated form after the surname
      John R. Smith, Esq.
      4
      archaic : a landed proprietor

    • @type6
      @type6 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@ScaleCreep Eh, I'm open to being wrong here. Everyone I've met that uses Esquire in their signature line is a former attorney or someone who didn't take the Bar Exam to become an attorney. There was a discussion in the lawyers subreddit about what lawyers thought of someone who used Esquire rather than Attorney at Law, and the general consensus was, "Suspicious they didn't pass the Bar Exam." I don't use it because I don't (and didn't) use any honorifics.

Prizes for gaming is a hard sell, because it is a game where you have to trust your opponent is not cheating in any way. Its easier to control in a video game you have control over, or for card games where measuring, eyeballing and tons of dice rolling where you have to trust your opponent told the truth are not an issue.
Prize support or trophies are fine.

Just do the best you can do with the hobby that you love and it will resonate with your audience. Is that going to make you a rich business mogul? Probably not. Does the audience care? ...

In mini painting there are simply working artists who paint minis for a living, those who do it on a side for some money, those who pair painting with content creation for hash, and those who do it for fun. Being a "professional mini painter" is a meaningless title.
There is no governing body of mini painting, there are no set professional norms, nor are there organizations that govern those norms and recognize talent. (Note that in other arts and creative fields this isn't true. There are guilds, orgs, etc., that define and shape the profession.) The golden demon doesn't count, as it is GW marking event. It would be like if the Oscar was awarded by Paramount, and only to actors who worked on paramount movies.

Im 18, I've never won a painting competition (I participated in one), I've been painting since June 13th 2022, and I feel like I CAN teach people how to paint. Usually people tell me I CAN'T teach games, but I feel like in games I always feel like I'm missing some stupid rule or important steps. Painting however, I understand more. I studied arts for 3 years, I am in my second year of university (equipment design), at first it seems like it doens't have anything to do with painting but it does. We draw volumes, shapes, minimalist drawing using only the important shadow/shapes that are necessary to imply scenes, we do scale models of chairs for example, and with 3 previous years of art classes, drawing everyday, observing, understanding light, I feel like when I started mini painting I had an advantage to a full newbie On my 3rd mini I did freehands, on my 10th mini I did freehands and volumetric highlights and yeah. I got bored at the basic GW stuff. Also watching videos from march-june helped in understanding mini painting more and acrylics aswell because we used a lot of inks and aquarels that you paint from light to dark ALWAYS. It was nice knowing that you could paint from dark to light because its easier for me. Anyways, if you're reading this BIG ASS TEXT I appreciate it. ALSO I DONT CONSIDER PEOPLE THAT PAINT OR DO "ART" ARTISTS, I think we're just painters UNTIL a large amount of people agrees that That individual contributed in a significant amount to that art form. Like Salvador Dali or Leonardo DaVinci. They contributed and made the basis steps for a type of paintings, the rest of people are praticants or learners of that art form, not artists
