  • Well, this is definitely not a purist fly. Tied to imitate not a particular insect or baitfish, but rather soft plastics used by conventional anglers. There are a lot of ways you could take this concept and near infinite color possibilities, but this is the basic standby that you will find in my box for some out-of-the-box fly fishing.
This is not a new fly pattern and it's easy to see others have done this concept and taken it to different places (Gulley Worm, extended body stoneflies, etc.). The video is just the direction that we have gone with the concept.

"You're allowed to over-wrap your material." No Sir, bud! I'm calling the Fly Tying Police right now! 🙂 Super pattern! Thanks for sharing! Oh, maybe put a tiny little square of foam back in the shank part to make it stand on its head? You'd have to fool with it to figure out how much.

Definitely can be done. I believe the the Gully Worm does that very thing. I’ve also used marabou or curly fly tails to make it more of a curly tail swimming worm.

Very nice tie Ethan. Tommy’s Twisted Willy is similar looking but he uses a furled tail.

To get a little more "senko" action, maybe the this hanging off the front end too, ala San Juan worm

Great looking fly. A little bit of foam tied in at the bend of the hook would possibly help it stand up like a ned rid.

Does the tail foul up when casting like a zonked strip does.

open up your loops a little and that will help big articualted flies from fouling. a belgian cast is great.

Can you recommend a vise that will hold bass hooks? Trying not to break the bank. Thanks in advance!

I got the dog creek one from bass pro for like $30 about 8 years ago. Still goin strong, tying pike flies and dries for trout.

@Jill Cox thanks! I ordered the Peak rotary. I figure I’d rather spend money once and think I’ll be happy with that one. Really wanted to buy the Regal but dang! Pricey! Thanks again, I’m sure I won’t be disappointed.
