"The true warrior fights not because he hates the one in front of him, but because he loves those behind him." I have never gave much thought to the 18th till now beyond "those guys that like playing with fire". Thank you for this video, as I was shown that compassion can exist in the 41st millennium.
I remember a passage in a HH novel where a remembrancer takes a picture of a salamander helping a child (or something) and vulkan taking away his camera, saying they must be seen as warriors for the great crusade, and offering a private interview as a compensation. Kind of heart breaking...
It’s from born of flame, chapter 2 in the audiobook version. By sheer, sheer coincidence I happened to come across that exact moment minutes after reading your comment. That’s magic.
"... I remember the little bell of his laughter - For him, no green-skin will pass me this night..!" PROFOUND! also, I am so not-crying it is ridiculous.
Have the Salamanders and Lamenters ever worked together? I feel like the collective sadness and compassion would probably spawn a new and very confused Chaos god.
Lamenters would probably take little to no casualties for once. "Just flee, we hold them back until our dying breath!" - Lamenter "YOU´RE NOT DYING ON MY WATCH COUSIN!" - A VERY angry Salamander wielding akimbo flamers.
My son was just born a mere 30 minutes ago, and I knew I needed to hear this again when I heard the roar of his cry when he came into this world. His soul is strong!

I have always loved the salamanders. Few people understand their ways and think they are weak for caring so much . But to me that is what makes them the most Noble and human of all the legions. Great job sir keep it up. Thanks for entertaining us.
Joel Smith thanks you, brother. And I agree, but would go further. I think their caring, despite the horrors they see, the dehumanisation of these horrific wars, the never ending combat - to continue to care amongst all of that horror? Utter bravery. Utterly human. They truly are astonishing warriors and men. But the emphasis being on ... men. God their cool.
Too kind, as I noticed about a dozen errors - but I was rushing to get it out. More haste less speed. Sorry. :( But thank you for your incredibly generous praise. I shall endeavour not to let you down. :)

@@Baldermort yes the Black Legion are missing BUT they have a huge amount of lore to cover and I am very much looking forward to your basic intro of them. Being able to go into branching topics such as the Black Crusades and the unity it brings will be a great video to listen too!
The Salamanders have always been one of my favorite chapters for the very reason that they don't forget who they are and that they are part of the human race. They treat family like family over the generations and are honored as well as they themselves honor their lineage. Because they don't have as flashy or game breaking rules like many other chapters do, they are often overlooked by people which is a shame. Their depth of character and strength of soul are one that all other chapters and human beings for that matter should strive for. But alas... it is the grimdark and heroes are far and few between.
00tree aye. I agree with everything but the rules bit. Their ‘mini codex’ can make them utterly brutal in 8th, non competitively. The flamer stratagems and ‘tweeks’ are just vile. My friend plays them. The hairy one, Lex. Did a batrep. All that said, rules change eh? Go with the look and feel first is my clarion call. But I’m not too worried about losing on the board. I just love playing. :) v
Baldermort's Guide to Warhammer I’ll admit that I haven’t seen their 8th Ed rules yet as none of my friends play them but I’ll take your word for it sir.
Pride. Other chapters may claim to fight for the emperors ideals but that is a false claim. Only in the Salamanders do you see a brotherhood dedicated to protecting humanity for what is the emperors dream and imperium if not the men and women who live in it. They are small in numbers but large and hearts. The enemies of man would be cautious when fighting the sons of the 18th.
Well said. I personally believe there are few things more dangerous than a parent protecting their child, their family. The Salamanders prove this point for me perfectly. I just wish they would get more 'stage time' as they are a glorious chapter and legion. Glorious. :) Thank you for listening. :)
Thank you for listening and for taking the time to comment, brother. I really hope my amateurish attempts at showing, not just telling, the heart of a faction are going to be something I can sustain and improve. I feel sometimes a short story can get people under the skin of the faction, see through their eyes, a bit better than just recounting their history. Many thanks again for listening. I hope it was a great work-out. :)

Without suffering, we can not do good or evil to one another. A universe with pain is contingent for a universe with morality. Otherwise, your choices are meaningless.
Oh wow... that opening skit was beautiful. The Salamanders are truly an amazing bunch of heroes. The warmth in their hearts makes them feel the most human even as they are the mighty Adeptus Astartes. You created a very vivid image with your voice and words, enough to make me smile and remember my own family's warmth. The Salamanders and the Raven Guard are truly the great heroes among the loyalist chapters in my mind, for they fight not only for the glory of the Imperium, nor are they rigidly indoctrinated to the Codex Astartes: they fight as they must for the sake of those small humans back home and do so out of genuine care even more than duty.
Not as servants Not as greaters Not as equals, but as partners. The Salamander defends humanity as a sword defends a warrior's heart; without which it would only be meaningless steel.
The Salamanders being who they are, they would probably be able to get an entire crusade to follow them to battle just because of the love and respect they receive!
Judge Dredd the Law Unfortunately I don't think this is the case. In regards to fellow Astartes, most chapters would think of the Salamanders' compassion as a weakness. In terms of the common citizenry or IG, tales of glory and victory (as that of the Blood Angels or Dark Angels) seem to spread much more rapidly and thoroughly than tales of kindness and selfless sacrifice. Dead men tell no tales, as it were. However, with compassion being so rare in 40k, I would imagine that those who were previously saved by the Salamanders would be leagues more indebted and loyal than your average "loyal citizen." A crusade following the Salamanders would likely have incredible morale, and I would imagine they would fight with fervor with such a chapter to look up to. It's just that gathering the armies might be more difficult.
Vulcan: "Say something Brother. You are just as stalwart as I. Tell this scribe so!" Corvus: "Hush Vulkan. It matters not who knows. We know. That is enough." Green Scale and Black Feather = *Humanity before Bros before Heretics!*
Most of the time, my favour lies with the traitors and the renegades. The Black legion and Iron warriors are my tea and coffee, with added night lords and word bearers as a pinch of sugar. Yet, never is my heretical heart so closely threatened to go full loyalist than when the Sons of Vulcan draw near. I wish there were more known successors of the chapter than the suspected relation of the Black Dragons and the Storm Giants. I would love ever more novels that expand on the heroic efforts of these saviours of humanity.
Thank you for listening brother. Black Legion, you say? Now that is a legion worth following. Should be something to your tastes coming very soon, brother. Just tell me if I get anything wrong. I never claim to know it all. I agree about the Manders and successors. I am hoping more will just ocme out of the woodwork. There are a thousand chapters. GW have barely scratched the surface of the potential to please and entertain us all. Here's hoping they get their fingers out and get more out soon. Thanks for listening. Very appreciated indeed. :)
Jack Creagh-Flynn I could be massively wrong as I’m only just getting back into the hobby after another spell away, but I’m sure around 4th or 5th ed there was an article claiming black dragons where descendants and successors of the Raven Guard legion, and the mutations they had where due to Corax trying to speed up the astartes program to replenish his legion after the drop site massacre, I could be wrong though. I believe it was in an old space marine codex.
Gonna have to say that Blood Angels are the most noble. To quote Parthunaax: “is it better to be born good? Or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?” And let’s not forget the existence of the Lamenters, who’s whole motto is “for those we cherish we die in glory.” They also sacrificed much for the civilians of the imperium. Salamanders in my opinion are the most human, and the kindest. Also that short story in the beginning was amazing.
I do know what you mean. If you watch my brief thing about the Blood Angels, you will KNOW I get it. But close it off after the introduction. The 'prognostications' were the first things I did, so suck. Badly. I have a BA army and adore them, every last thing about them. I respect your perspective. Most of the time I hold it also. Today was not that day though. Today, I feel it is the Salamanders. But then, tomorrow I may be back with you on this one. God, I love this hobby. You can literally spend years just discovering it and then discussing it. Most immersive experience available. :) Thanks for listening. It is very appreciated indeed. ;)
@@Baldermort I agree with you wholeheartedly. I think it's really semantics though, because we all know that the Sallies are the biggest Good Guys anyway, as much of a BA fanboy as I am I must admit that. I wish the sons of Sanguinius retained their families. If you've read the Dante novella there's a point where he goes back to his tribe but his family is long dead because they live such short lives. I love warhammer too, it's such a rich and amazing universe, and your videos do them great justice. I would place you on the same tier as Oculus Imperia, who I think does the best lore videos on TH-cam.
Matt C2083 ??? The gene seed instills in them a dark hunger and madness which they constantly must struggle against and would otherwise be their doom. Blood angels are constantly trying to overcome their evil nature through great effort. It’s a pretty straight line comparison
When I first heard about the Salamanders when getting into 40k lore, there was something that drew me to them. I have yet to start collecting an army, but I have a gut feeling that this’ll be my first. There’s something truly noble about them that I genuinely love. Thanks for the video.

Wade George you mean where the Marine Killers growler at even the GK and they backed down? Well, as far as I remember anyway. I’ll need to check that. I’m old. SW have plenty. Leave the Manders something. They care a heck of a lot more about the little people than Wolves. But wolves care a lot more than most. All fun. Thanks for listening. :).
@@Baldermort I agree 100% about the Salamanders and the way they care and interact with the average human. The particular event I used as an example was the SW, GK and IG where all fighting some demonic incursion, afterwards the GK wanted to purge the IG and any citizen. The SW sheilded the humans even taking fire from the GK but not returning fire. Great channel BTW
@@wadegeorge1591 Yup, the infamous (and secret but not really) First War of Armageddon. The Space Wolves fought on Armageddon alongside the planetary defenders and Imperial Guard regiments fighting back a massive invasion of Chaos led by Angron. The Grey Knights, who were secret at that point to the local populace, arrived and lost a good chunk of their forces but banished Angron and his forces back to the Warp. The Inquisition and Grey Knights decided that to make sure no information of this got out, they would purify the planet and sterilize the populace, along with the Guardsmen regiments who saw the action. The Space Wolves said "Nah, fuck that, they fought and survived they shouldn't be lobotomized in some ship", and tried to protect the transports of civilians. When the Inquisition opened fire on them, the Space Wolves did their best to avoid shooting back, but they had a mini war that ended with the Space Wolf commander at the time going to the Inquisitor's ship and beheading him for his crimes.
@@georgestauber2636 I mean, anything is possible in a galaxy so large. There are probably plenty of Inquisitors in the Ordo Malleus who thought the Inquisitor who led the cleansing of Armageddon was cruel, and some who actively supported the Space Wolves by either taking the civilians elsewhere, or by removing their forces from the Inquisitor's forces.
I think the word you are looking for is compassionate. They are the most compassionate they remember their human life and stay close to their relatives and family As far as i know this is a very unique occurrence Ultramarines to a certain extend have compassion but yknow they are ultra marines The space wolves have been known to show compassion (hell they kicked the inquisitions ass for it for good measure)
Alas, no. You may be thinking of the first use of the word, re to be born into aristocracy. I am not. The language deployed in these videos is more archaic, romantic, as it lends a synthetic gravitas my day-to-day lexicon would not. Definition: Noble: - adj: 2: having or showing fine personal qualities or high moral principles. In my mind, the Manders are the most noble. They have very high moral principles and personal qualities. I understand why people love the Ultras. I really do. I join them in this love. But I take a holistic view of their lore. One writer made them what is presently considered to be the cannon. But he is gone and it was actually only a comparatively brief tenure as the clock ticks. I personally believe it was done to rile people up as Marvel and DC used to do in the 70s and 80s. A tool to cause tribalism and animosity to add fire to the fan's discussions. GW was on its knees and desperate for anything that would increase their sales and save them - strange but true. Hence, they tried the tribal warfare tactic. If you are arguing with your friends about which chapter is best, you are still engaging in the hobby. Perfect (from GW's point of view.) Passion leads to purchasing. If this was not true, then their editor in chief is merely lazy or incompetent. Hence my adherence to the prior perspective being my preference. But then, my video on the Ultras will be from their perspective, so you may probably hear that line from their video. There will be no consistency in my videos as they are all faction based - as each of the factions have a very different world view. Well, this was fun. Thanks for the chat thus far. What is your actual perspective on the ultras - what they are now and what they should more rightly be? Intrigued to know.
Thank you, Kilgore. Very appreciated indeed. I know! So few known anything about the manders. Its so strange for a legion no less. Thank you for listening, as always. :)
I love the awesomeness of 40k, the sheer insanity, the brutality and the seeming futility of it all. But what I love most of all about things like 40k. Is when the humanity, shines through it all. When through all the horrible suffering, toiling and despairing. There is kindness. Maybe not constantly. Maybe not in massive amounts. But just those little bits of goodness that reminds us all, we're in it together.
The Salamanders are truly my second favorite chapter ouf of them all, and it in rages me when I see know nothing political tribalests try to characterize them as just being the "black ones". They and the Space Wolves are 2 of the most beloved chapters as far as I can tell, but yet nothing gets done with them. I can't seem to find many, or really any novles about them or their exploits outside of the Horus heresy.
Yep. That particular nonchalance I wanted to stamp on. The colour of their skin is utterly unimportant. It is the size of their hearts, the strength of their conviction that always impressed me. I meant every word on this video. Salamanders are just heroic. In a universe of moral greys and horrors - they see the light. :) Thanks for listening, brother. It is very appreciated indeed. :)
@@Baldermort no porbs man excellent coverage. its a great annoyance that more stories gave not been done about them, so much potential conflict between them and the other forces of the imperium are left tragically unexplored.

Darn it Baldermort! How dare you make me feel feelings I have not felt is years. Why I got all misty eyed and almost.. human! of all things! Very well made sir, you deserve a medal for this masterpiece.
The salamanders are my favorite of the all the chapters because they value life, and know the importance of all human life. This is the first time hearing one of your videos and you have earned another subscriber. Looking forward to watching more
As a regular gentle listener, I must say this opening excerpt is one of the most revisited for me. In my humble opinion, the most striking of your readings
I remember doing one of those, "What Space Marine Chapter are you?" quizzes and actually got the Salamanders, and after watching this, I don't think I would want to be any other! Great video, subscribed and will be watching more videos.
Its quit possible that the detachment from normal humanity that many space marines go through is both a strength and a weakness to them. On one hand they can act unbiasedly in the name of protecting the imperium. (At least, in theory anyway, some chapters may very.) It seems to me like the Emperor knew, or at least had an idea of what we might face when humanity went out to reclaim it's lost colonies. So figured, in order to fight monsters, mankind needed monsters of it's own. In that regard he was quite successful. That detachment though has comeback to bite mankind on the rear end a great many times. Without human attachments, many marines start considering humans lesser than themselves. They might fight to protect humanity, but only in the sense that humanity is a part of His Imperium, and there exsistance in that regard, is forfeit to that end. Even in death, can you serve the emperor after all; they live by that, surely these lesser beings can have the decency to do the same! Which is why it seems when space marines fall, they fall HARD. They are still social animals after all, they do seem to be just as influenced by peer pressure as any other human being. Made worse, cause the chapter is all they know.
I utterly agree. It is their lack of compassion and 'humanity' that allows them to do what they do, to fight what they need to fight. They must be steel. But that is very weak, to a certain extent, as they are not pliable and lack the basic controls that prevent them from taking certain actions. Along with their insular nature - as you very clearly identify. The marines - a two edged sword if there ever was one. Thank you for listening, but more so for your thoughts. Very appreciated indeed. ;)
Into the Fires of Battle! Unto the Anvil of War! I come back to this video all the time because it is seriously the most heartfelt glimpse into the Salamanders and gives me chills the entire time I'm listening. The way you voice your Salamanders is also how I hear them in my head Canon, so that was an immediate grab the first time I watched this video. The Jamaican thing was funny for a minute, but always felt they would have a deeper and more stoic voice, like that of a mountain speaking. Cheers to you, brother. VULKAN LIVES!
You did it again Baldermort. I admit I never took much notice of the Salamanders before. Once again, only edification that Warhammer 40,000 is one of the Science Fiction universes with *the most depth*
Thanks, Inundation. I never know it all. Never. But I really felt that a LOT of people simply overlook the Salamanders. Which is not right. I think most, if not all, of the factions and forces of this fantastic setting are layered and have masses of appeal if people know their angle. Thanks for listening, brother. :)
Your narrative of the Salamanders is pure gold. I believe it did justice to describe the inherent humanity and nobility of the Salamanders. I got the chills when you ended the narrative, affirming the Salamanders worthiness of the title "Knights." Brilliant work!
I actually teared up listening to the narration in the first half of the video. It was so beautiful and it perfectly highlights the primary reason for why the Salamanders are tied with the Raven Guard as my favorite Astartes chapter: *their humanity.*
It's intriguing how in heresy times they are the opposite of Iron Warriors with how they dealt with massive losses and suicidal missions. Where Salamanders sacrifice themselves for everyone equally, disregarding the big picture, the Iron Warriors are sacrificed for the bigger picture itself. Really love the depth of this universe and how so different things in it can explore similar concepts with different perspectives.

Thank you, brother. I intend to more of there. I am sure some won;t be brilliant - but no guts, no glory. :)
Thank you for listening. :)
Baldermort's Guide to Warhammer it’s best to try either way man. Love that you put some thought to them. Many people don’t give the Salamanders the justice they deserve!
Your voice is basically Vulcan incarnate! that short story was fantastic! another wonderful and flawless video. great work Baldermort!

I haven’t done the Black Legion. Ffs. Really? I am soooo old. In the name of the throne. How?

Well now in 9th they’ve received their due
Glorious. :)
Thank you for listening. :)
What about the Lamenters Space Marine Chapter?
You didnt have to hit THAT deep
Damn it man...that intro actually made me shed tears on my way to the gym.
What a fantastic and pride strengthening story
Thank you for listening and for taking the time to comment, brother. I really hope my amateurish attempts at showing, not just telling, the heart of a faction are going to be something I can sustain and improve. I feel sometimes a short story can get people under the skin of the faction, see through their eyes, a bit better than just recounting their history.
Many thanks again for listening. I hope it was a great work-out. :)

Thanks for listening. :)
@@Baldermort Welcome :)
"there are no heroes in the grimdark"
If not in the depth of darkness then where else can heroes be? Why would heroes be necessary without darkness?
The deeper the dark, the brighter the stars.
Contrast
"There are no heroes in the grim, dark future in the year 40,000"
Salamanders: "Bruddah, hold my flamer."
The Manders are amazing. :) Thank you for listening, brother Tronus. :)
Not as servants
Not as greaters
Not as equals, but as partners.
The Salamander defends humanity as a sword defends a warrior's heart; without which it would only be meaningless steel.
Best chapter. Best legion. Nobody can convince me otherwise.
I absolutely love the Salamanders, for exactly the humanity they exhibit. And Vulcan, a giant with two giant hearts, an Eternal.
So brilliant.
"For the little bell...." Cried like a baby. Vulcan lives!
@@astro6009 Absolutely agree with you brother!
This monologue brought me to tears. I had to pause to find a place to cry because of how beautiful the entire speech was. Truly beautiful stuff
This is genuinely moving. The Astartes defend humanity, but the Salamanders cherish humanity.
Vulcan: "Say something Brother. You are just as stalwart as I. Tell this scribe so!"
Corvus: "Hush Vulkan. It matters not who knows. We know. That is enough."
Green Scale and Black Feather = *Humanity before Bros before Heretics!*
Strong enough for two hearts. Love that
Just trying my best. Thank you for commenting, brother. Always good to see you on the site, Carl. Always. :)
Thanks for listening.
I would place you on the same tier as Oculus Imperia, who I think does the best lore videos on TH-cam.
what does skyrim have to do with 40K? Bangles aren't inherently bad or bloodthirsty.
Matt C2083 ???
The gene seed instills in them a dark hunger and madness which they constantly must struggle against and would otherwise be their doom. Blood angels are constantly trying to overcome their evil nature through great effort. It’s a pretty straight line comparison
A great overview of The Salamanders. Really captured the heart of the 18th! "Into the fires of battle, unto the anvil of war!"
Thanks Lonegoat. I really do try to get into the head and shoes of the armies I am presenting. I really hope it seems to be working. :)

Thank you for honouring my chapter!!
When I first heard about the Salamanders when getting into 40k lore, there was something that drew me to them. I have yet to start collecting an army, but I have a gut feeling that this’ll be my first. There’s something truly noble about them that I genuinely love. Thanks for the video.

Such righteous narration. I've never heard such an impassioned argument for my favourite Chapter. Thank you, profusely, for doing justice by the Salamanders! I'm truly moved by your work.
Space Wolves protect average humans. They also continue to interact with their tribes. They had a little war with the Grey Knights
@@kevincass9917 Thats a classic example of why I despise Space Wolves. They have levels of plot armor that shouldn't be possible.
They are the most compassionate they remember their human life and stay close to their relatives and family
As far as i know this is a very unique occurrence
Ultramarines to a certain extend have compassion but yknow they are ultra marines
The space wolves have been known to show compassion (hell they kicked the inquisitions ass for it for good measure)
I have a new found respect for the 18th. Your intro was amazing. I didn't know about the families. Thank you.
Thank you, Kilgore. Very appreciated indeed. I know! So few known anything about the manders. Its so strange for a legion no less.

@@Baldermort many thanks for the quality intros in return. Emperor protects
That story at the beginning was beautiful. Salamanders are some of my favourite Space Marines.
Space Wolf Black Mane. The Salamanders Omnibus is a good read. Plenty of short stories alongside a trilogy thrown in :)
Yeah aside from the omnibus I have never seen anything extra done with them. The most glorious primarch got some love against the orc boss.
Yep. That particular nonchalance I wanted to stamp on. The colour of their skin is utterly unimportant. It is the size of their hearts, the strength of their conviction that always impressed me. I meant every word on this video. Salamanders are just heroic. In a universe of moral greys and horrors - they see the light. :)
Thanks for listening, brother. It is very appreciated indeed. :)

Very appreciated indeed. ;)
I particularly enjoyed this audio drama. It really came to life in my mind. Amazing work!

Beautiful writing and even better narration.
With this. This chapter has become my favorite.
