Portal was the set that first got me into Magic when I was about 8 years old. I feel like magic really needs sets like these today to get new blood into the hobby, but these days they are more focused on making it a premium product that squeezes the last bit of money from its existing customers rather than trying to create interest and accessibility for new players. Kind of like what the Core Set products were for the longest time.
I learned the game with Portal, but couldn't upgrade to regular Magic easily, but then I relearned it with Portal: Second Age & was able to upgrade to regular Magic from that with no problem. This was in 1998. So I would say Portal was not successful, but Portal: Second Age was successful.
Not so weird in my opinion. Portal was an earnest attempt by Wizards to onboard beginners by designing a set specifically with them in mind. Nowadays, everyone learns MtG by having a player teach them or signing up for MtG Arena since they've quit making manuals. It's a game where the publisher relies on its player base to teach others because they are incapable of teaching the game themselves.
I started playing Magic with portal back then! Last year I finished completing my portal set, as a reminder of the good old days ❤ Next step: the alternate art Chinese versions 😅

I remember when I started playing I was told to buy 5th Edition, not Portal.
I'm just starting the video but based on my memory, Portal wasn't type 2 legal

Teaching kids magic lately and I wish they would bring back portal
