1:57 I love how he sings the low notes so effortlessly and then sings the higher note afterwards just as flawlessly haha. Tim Foust is a truly remarkable singer.
Not to diminish him, but in this particular recording those are more than likely different takes, you can't really judge these transitions from studio recordings.
Today is the 1 year anniversary of my mother passing away from Covid. She and her mother were lifelong vocalists. She taught me to sing. Since it happened, it's been hard to sing. Thanks to you both for this. It helped me find my voice again.
If you didn't know Tim was a bass, you would be totally fooled by his first solo that he was a tenor. His voice is SO smooth. He makes it sound so easy!
So I just looked up the origins of Greensleeves, while its age is not known exactly, the first known reference to the song was in a songbook from *1584* making the song _at least_ 433 years old. Cool huh.
Lol yeah, I read about that. It's one of the most popular theories, historians say its unlikely because the style of songwriting that was used in Greensleeves was an Italian style that didn't become popular in England until 30 years later. However, Kings _did_ travel and study other cultures, so I would argue its possible he chose that, unknown in England style of songwriting for that vary reason. A type of song she's likely never heard before might be better received.
Isla O'Leary that is the most popular theory but not by historians. You see, the style of songwriting that Greensleeves was written in was an Italian style that was not known in England yet. It did become a popular style in England, but only some 40 or so years after this song was written (possibly in part _because_ of this song). Since kings travel it is certainly possible that he learned the style IN Italy and wrote it that way for that very reason, but ultimately historians do not think Henry VIII what the author.

@@ovni2295 That's interesting because the song talks about giving her everything she could wish for, something you would think only a monarch could do. The thing that had convinced me was the "greensleeves", because I had read before that was her nickname in court. Perhaps he took someone else's song and adapted it to her? Like Elton John did with the song about Marilyn Monroe and sang it for Princess Diana's funeral?

Peter, I have followed Home Free before the sing off! More do after the sing off. Then I found out about you Peter Hollens. You really surprised me saying this was a "one take". I am one of those who was a child then teenager listening to Folk Music. At age 17-18 my cousin and I went to see the Graduate. I lived a very sheltered life as a child. My Mama would never have let me go see that movie but she nor I knew the details of the movie. My cousin was my age & knew all the details but knew not to tell me. It wasn't my Mama that had a heart attack when she found out. It was my Aunt (cousins Mama) that was so upset. I loved your take on both the songs from the Graduate. I Loved Peter, Paul & Mary. I also loved Teach Your Children Well by Crosby, Stills & Nash. I Loved The Mama's & The Papa's. After this period of liking folk art I went on liking Country Music. I never liked any hard rock and their bad language. Today it is Gospel or Country Music and when I hear old Folk Music. Sorry for the long message and I will check-out your new Folk Art Album. BTW, will it be on ITunes. I listen to music on my tablet or IPad. Keep up the great work Peter.

Henry sent me a poem all about my green sleeves, i changed a couple words put it on a sick beat the song blew their minds next minute i was signed and now i’m writing lyrics for shakesy p 💚

I saw "Greensleeves" and "Tim Foust" and fell off my couch screaming :D
😂 Thanks for watching Sarah!
I just have to see "Tim Foust" in any collab and I click on it. Instantly. XDD And what could be better than him and Peter Hollens?!?!
Sarah K. SAME
I had to wait for my headphones to charge so I could properly appreciate it. It was torture. I didn't want to wait.
Excellent harmonies between you and Tim in this one, Peter, good vocal matching, best of your Tim-collaborations so far!
Thanks Robin!
Peter you and Tim Foust harmonize so beautifully together I hope you sing many more songs together. ❤
It’s happy to see classics still are relevant hundreds of years later.
Loved this! His range is crazy. Have you ever thought of putting together a TH-camr quartet collab? I bet the timing would be difficult but it would be awesome.
Trent Menssen Sam Tsui and Casey Breeves, omg that would be brilliant!
Wow.. Ive never seen such difference in one persons voice like that.. amazing. The both of you have beautiful voices.
You two are amazing together!
I have always loved this song, it is both sad and beautiful. This may be the most beautiful rendition of it that I have ever heard, including my own performances. Thank you, for sharing your talent with all of us. 👍😀 Next year, for International Talk Like a Pirate Day, could you do some pirate songs?
That means a lot to me! Thank you so much!!! That's a cool idea 😂👍
Ooo pirate songs would be awesome! 😄
This is the most beautiful rendition that I’ve ever heard of this song! I’m crying! God bless!
I just realized this song is around 500 years old and it's about a Nice Guy who's been Friendzoned.
Henry the 8th wrote this for Anne Boelyn. She's also called Anne of a thousand days, because that's how long she was married to him before he had her beheaded. Not a Nice Guy by anyones standards.
@@margeebechyne8642 It actually predates his reign by a few years I think.
@@ovni2295 actually it comes after his reign, making it much more likely to be Elizabethan in origin
The more things change, the more they stay the same
This is one of those songs that gives me literal chills

When I was a child, I had a music box that played this melody. It changed my life forever, the music was and remains enchantingly beautiful :)
Tim’s range is absolutely phenomenal.
It's not just his range, it's also how amazing he sounds no matter whether he sings bass, baritone or tenor.
Monika S. Yes, his tone and control is great.
I seem to have a love / hate relationship with Tim. 😂
Ever since I heard a version of this song in one of my favorite audio books when I was a kid I’ve been unable to forget it. So happy I finally found the original song with lyrics, and sung by such amazing voices, truly couldn’t be happier.

This I heard back in Highschool days. The most beautiful song ever. And still is.
Makes me wanna find an alternate way to Asia to trade spices
dicklessfiddiesboi underrated comment
May I ask why? I really don't know the history that well but would like to learn more.
@@bensonninan6965 i think when the Ottoman Empire got the trade routes through Persia etc, so the brits and portugease had to find a new route to Asia. Thats Why Columbus went to America
I was the 100th like.... :3
Please don't, I live in Asia :(
Alas, my love, you do me wrong
To cast me off discourteously
And I have loved you for so long
Delighting in your company
*Greensleeves was all my joy,
Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves was my heart of gold
And who but lady Greensleeves*
I have been ready at your hand,
To grant whatever you would crave,
I have both wagered life and land,
Your love and good-will for to have.
***
Well, I will pray to God on high,
that thou my constancy mayst see,
And that yet once before I die,
Thou wilt vouchsafe to love me.
Ah, Greensleeves, now farewell, adieu,
To God I pray to prosper thee,
For I am still thy lover true,
Come once again and love me.

I am a musician and I sing this song and I must say that this is the best version I have "ever" heard of this musical gem!...Bravo!
Please record more of these old, "atemporal", songs to enjoy.
Fantastic.....Tim's range is phenoinal, & his lo notes are somthing toreckon with!
These Gentlemen bring a bit of Heaven to earth when they sing. I love this song and after hearing it I love it even more
This is my favorite song. I have never heard such a beautiful presentation of Greensleeves.

His range is out of this world! Thanks for watching :)
2 of my favourite voices these days. Thanks Tim and Peter.
OH, amazing! A one-take wonder! Thank you!
Thank you for watching Steven!
I literally get goosebumps every time Tim's voice reaches those low bass notes. One of my favorite videos by far. Awesome job both of you!
Heard this as a small kid and connected to it on a spiritual level. Still one of my all time favorite songs.
This is hauntingly beautiful! Absolutely amazing as always. Your voices blend so well, I love it. I absolutely love the location/scenery. So gorgeous! 😍
Thank you Isabella! We shot it around Florence, OR!

Oh my God! This is so beautiful Peter and Tim.

I thought Tim was Kevin Sorbo for a minute.
Why not?
Two of the most amazing and astounding voices of all time sing this beautiful, beautiful song ... how could ANYONE not love this performance?
I absolutely LOVE hearing both of you singing together!! Your voices compliment each other's very well!! Good job!!
Poor Anne Boleyn. At least her neck was long and thin.
The last thing she said was "I have such a short neck" like dUh
Yes, poor Anne..... but the song has absolutely NOTHING to do with her.
@Lucas West And what does that have to do with Anne Boleyn? The song wasn't even heard in England until AFTER Henry VIII died.... so how could it be about Anne?
@@LadyDragonsblood actually.
The song was made when Henry was with Katherine Parr.
The legend say that he wrote this when he was dying, kinda as a dead wish,a weird apologise ; for Anne B.
I hardly belive that Jane was "hEs TrUe LoVe" anyway.
@@Asia-zd1rg He didn't write it, it is Italian in composition style. How long have you taught Music History?
OMG. I can't. Tears at the beauty of the sound. I just can't. No words.
One of my lifelong (& I'm old) favorite songs. And it feels like you're singing it right to me. Bless you for sharing your wonderful voices 💜
