    Worked great for me too! Also found it helped to:
    - drape plastic bag or cling film on the outside to reduce the bleach smell
    - use the cheapest toilet paper on hand; the more it turns to mush when wet, the better you can mash it to the silicone surface
    - put the bleach in a (well-marked!) spray bottle on “stream” to precisely dispense and thoroughly saturate fibers

    Definitely worth a try, but I'll keep the gloves on! I recall using bleach on mouldy silicone years ago, and a few weeks later the bead shrunk, breaking the seal. The silicone was noticeably thinner, so I assumed the bleach had damaged it in some way.

  • @kathleenstoin671
    @kathleenstoin671 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

    If you need to remove old silicone, you can try to prevent mold regrowth by treating the mold with chlorine bleach (sodium hypochlorite). Leave the bleach on for an hour or so. Reapply if necessary. Use a scrub brush to thoroughly scrub off the area to remove any remaining residue and dirt or soap scum. Rinse well and allow to dry completely. Now apply regular rubbing alcohol to all areas where you want to apply the new sealant. Allow to dry thoroughly and apply the new sealant. Follow directions on the sealant with regard to curing time before using the tub or shower. Prevent new mold from getting bad by properly ventilating the shower or the entire bathroom after use. Weekly cleaning will help, and spray on some chlorine bleach after rinsing away the other cleaning products. Remember to use adequate ventilation, and protect your skin when using chlorine bleach. Don't mix bleach with other cleaning products, especially ammonia!

    If the mold was on the surface of the caulk then it could be wiped off. The mold has permeated the caulk (using it for food) and the only way to remove the mold is to replace the caulk. Your technique only bleaches out the color of the mold, so it will come right back. But it does make a cosmetic difference.

      Agree! There's absolutely no Way to remove the Mold out of the Silicone. You can bleach it or you can use a Special Color to hide the Mold. But this is not the Solution.
      The Mold appears if the Vinegar-Acid in the Silicone is washed out.

And another commenter mentioned that the goal is to starve the mold of oxygen and so I just soaked a tissue over the drain and the mold in the plastic drain cover is removed even more than when I used to try and flush out with boiling hot water! Thank you!!!

      You didn't starve the Mold, the Bleach destroys the Color of the Mold and makes him invisible.
      Same Effect if you use Bleach to clean your Clothes.

    You can do a similar thing with bleach based toilet cleaner gel. You don't have to use the toilet paper as the gel sticks to the wall.

    If you're skeptical like me, I just want to put some of that to rest. I can confirm that this works. I was honestly blown away by how well it works. Only downside that I see is that I don't think there's a way to get it to work on vertically placed tile. If there was, I'd be buying a pack of toilet paper and covering my whole bathroom in it. Anyways, thank you for the video, this made a huge difference!

    I've never seen that thick bleach product here in the USA, must be a popular British product. I've done the same thing using regular laundry bleach (3%-5% sodium hypochlorite) and its produced similar results. I only kept it in place for about 12 hours but I made sure I kept the paper damp for that time (use a spray bottle with water in it).
