how to clean mouldy silicone

- Hi friends. As someone who has installed bathrooms professionally for about 15 years I can assure you that mouldy or discoloured silicone sealant can affect anyone, regardless of status. Here's a great tip on how to clean it in a quick and simple way without the need to replace it. Share this vid, people need to know this😂🤣
IMPORTANT!! If you have natural stone or porous tiles you will need to apply a stone sealer after carrying out this procedure. DO NOT do this method if you have a coloured resin shower tray as the pure bleach could discolour the tray.
I tried this and my whole bath disintegrated, my house burnt down and I had to buy a new house and some new silicon sealer for my new bath. Next time I may use thinner bleach ...
🤣😂🤣😂🤣I hope you had insurance brother 😂🤣😁👍
😂😂😂
😆 Oh no! Stop it! Just stop it…😳I am sorry about your home though, I hope everything worked out fine.
Lol, I spat my coffee out laughing when I read your comment.
At least you got rid of the mould.. who cares about the house..
Something as effective, if not more, is plain white vinegar. Use the same paper towels. Soak them in white vinegar and place overnight on the affected areas. It kills it totally and is not bad for septic tanks.
I've brown malt vinegar so will still give it a go to see what happens tonight 😉
@@OwenJoseph-nl4eedid it work?
@@ChardonnaySundae the tissue went brown but no the mold was still there, so used bleach which did the trick! Was curious so bought white which was white malt vinegar & it did not remove any mold, I'm not sure what malt vinegar means by malt? Is there any more types of white vinegars? 🤔
@@OwenJoseph-xi8ll I've never heard of "malt" vinegar. I've had GREAT success using "plain WHITE vinegar". It does indeed work as a cleaner, and more effectively than chemicals 10x the price. However, it does still have a strong odour
@@OhSodditWhite vinegar has 25% acid, while any other vinegar - used for cooking and salads - is much softer with only about 5% acid!
A bloody saviour! I've always been the knobhead who replaces the silicone!
🤣😂🤣Morning Sam 👍this is effortless and cheap, just like pikey😂🤣😂👍
Your no knobhead your practice of replacing the damage silicone is the best way forward.. you can also add mould prevention before you put the new silicone down
Using bleach will completely fuck the seal, replacing it is a much better bet, this video is bollocks.
Me to......
Great stuff.
People also need to remember NOT to put/leave objects such as shower gel bottles on the ledge and especially in corners.
This stifles ventilation and hastens mould appearing.
I always squeegee tiles and wipe excess water after showering.
Use extractor fan ( if you have one ) during bath/shower and after.
Opening windows is a must.
You don’t need to use that much. I use an old toothbrush and dip the tip of the bristles in bleach. Then just brush it on. In total I would never use more than a tablespoon of bleach. (Gel bleach is best as it clings to the surface). Rinse off in 30 or so mins for really bad mould but generally it is good enough in 5 mins. Leaving that much bleach overnight can be detrimental to the silicone over time and will break down creating pockets that will harbour more mould.
To reduce the likelihood of mould developing whether well ventilated or not is to squeegee the shower recess and dry off with an old towel after each use. I know that won’t appeal to most people but I have been doing this for decades and my shower looks like new. We are talking two mins max to do this.
First-rate advice! And the best technique too!
I won' t show my missus the toothbrush tip or it will be mine that gets used.
The reason why silicone gets mouldy is related to silicone ageing. As cleaning products come in contact with the silicone ( soap, shampoo from cleaning your body , bleach and other cleaning products ) with time the silicone loses its elasticity and microcracks start to develop. These microcracks are the ideal environment for mould because they trap humidity.
Applying bleach will only fix the issue temporarily , but after silicone microcracks lose their bleach trapped humidity, mould will start to appear again.
The long term solution is to remove the silicone , clean the surface with alcohol and apply a fresh new layer of silicone. This will ensure another 3-4years mould free.
Now THAT is what you CALL a 'Life-hack"...
Thank you, sir!
Gr8 tip!. Changing subject, when you see big lumps of dried bird muck on car, just put kitchen/ toilet paper on top, spray soak with water, return in 10 mins and wipe away. Back of the net!
🤣😂Great tip🤣😂🤣👍
Selleys rapid mould cleaner will work on any mould. Just spray and walk away. The mould will disappear without any scrubbing. It's by far the most effective mould cleaner on the market.
I tried and it worked. Removed about 90 % of the black mold. Thank you sir.
😁👍
Any stubborn areas should clean up with a 2nd go
Good tip.
I use astonish mould and mildew remover, but the trouble is it runs off.
Never thought of using paper towels.
Thanks for this🤗
I found this video yesterday and tested the method on a part (20cm) of my shower. After 3-4 hours, about 95% of the mould was gone. I will do the rest tonight. Thank you for the tip :D
My pleasure friend. I'm glad it helped🤗
Any updates?
Trust me it's rare for me to agree with any "top tip" videos but bleach is the ONLY real mould killer. Well done.
I've been trying to fix this issue in one of our showers for sometime, and this suggestion worked quite well! Thanks, mate!
Brilliant!! I'm glad it helped. 👍
I tried lots of thing but nothing worked. This one worked and my batch room looks great now. Thanks for great video.
@mortezanaraghi446 😁👍👍that's for commenting friend. So many people have said I faked this vid🤦♂️😂it's 100% real, cheap, easy and does NOT cause any damage 😁👍
I tried this and it worked. Fantastic!!!
My toilet/grey water system is septic; and it really doesn't like bleach. But I've been told I can dump some natural pot set greek style yoghurt into the septic system afterwards, to restore the bacteria which break down waste. So if anyone else has this issue, there is the possible solution to bleach usage in the shower stall. P.S. ensure good ventilation so not to cause yourself breathing issues, for those who are sensitive, and make sure the cat can't get into the bathroom. Apparently cats bliss out on bleach fumes, and I'm sure it can't be good for them.
I have a septic that runs into a reed bed system, so I just block the pipe so water can’t run down, to do jobs such as this.
I did this trick yesterday but used bog paper, it does work.👍
It's strangly satisfying when you go back and see how clean it all is😁👍
Wow, thanks for the great tip

Use hydrogen peroxide, it doesn't effect the silicone like bleach and vinegar do

Mine was brown rather than mouldy & was told that bleach would ruin the stainless steel fittings. I used a tiny tin of withe enamel paint & an old small art brush (or a make up brush well washed & dry) .. Looking great.
Bleach just whitens the mould for a while. Use white vinegar instead which will actually kills the mould.
That's a great tip👍👍

The bleach kills the mould too. It doesnt just remove its colour like getting bleach on your clothes lol
Bleach bleaches😂
@@realcooking1833 It certainly does. But to suggest it doesnt kill the mould is ridiculous 😄

Bleach does not remove mould it simply bleaches it, it’s still there under the surface. The only way to get rid of it is to replace the silicone
This is my fear, I've tried everything but it seems the corner vertical part the mold is under the silicon and the silence is rotting. Seems the only way is to remove it and reseal.
Bleach does kill mold, also bacteria and viruses.
The bleach wouldn't only bleach the silicone. The bleach would also kill all bacteria and viruses on the silicone.Including Covid-19
Wow! So easy it seems. I'll try today.

I just cleaned mine with bleach, it worked well but I didn't think of the rolled up tissue idea, I will use that next time.
what a fantastic tip. cheers

Magic. Even reshaped the silicone to make it look like a new installation. Check the old vs the new. It isnt the same shape
@64pem 😂🤣😂it's 100% the same🤦♂️I but your great at conspiracy theories 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
In my experience, do NOT use this method unless you have a porcelain bath or shower tray. The bleach totally effed my GRP tray !
Good advice!! I'll change the description on this vid to include this. I'd already mentioned porous tiles and natural stone but I didn't think about coloured resin trays👍👍
@@realcooking1833Where did you mention porous tiles and natural stone ? Is it not advisable to use thick bleach in that case ?
@@sefraprince5481 hi Sefra. I put it in the video description. If you have porous tiles or natural stone you can still do this method of cleaning but after rinsing and drying you must reseal. It's fine to reseal over the newly cleaned silicone 😁👍
I’ve heard this can happen sometimes - maybe try a cheaper bleach next time - it might fizz a bit less, but still do the job 👍

The problem is due to standing water, but who has time to dry the shower/bath area completely every time?

I use HG products. Mould and limescale remover. It's a lot easier.
I’m Goan try that tonight. Will update you guys on my results
Please do friend. Its really easy and effective 👍
Hey guys! It definitely works!! My shower looks brand new. Thanks for the great tip x
You don’t need that stuff. Just take liquid bleach. Put a little bit in a small container. Then with an old toothbrush just dab the bleach wherever the mold is. I’ve done this numerous times. No need for rolled up paper towels or special cleaner.
Household Chlorine . . No rubbing, scrubbing . . Spray on leave it . . Few treatments and it is gone.
Gonna try this, but I made the mistake of using expensive anti-fungal CLEAR silicone, and the mold is UNDERNEATH the silicone. We’ll see how it goes.
That might need cutting out and redoing I'm afraid. If you get chance, please let me know how you get on😁👍
Thank you! Love your intro!
😂🤣thanks Poppy's 😂😁👍
Problem is when the mould in inside the grout, no alternative but to cut out & replace.

Wow !!

@fv1291 🤣😂🤣my pleasure friend, im glad its helped😁👍
I tried this before and it didn't work ... but yours look beautiful .. thick bleach did you say ... where do you get that?
@samsno3667 hi friend. I got it from homebargains in UK but all supermarkets should stock a similar type👍👍
It won't last for long. Since the main problem (high humidity) is not resolved, it will come back very quick. And the silicone will get rough with the time ongoing, and that makes it easier for mold to come back. Even if it is a lot of work, it is better to replace silicone after round abut 5-7 years and always use good silicone which reduce mold.
It stays clean for about a year
@@realcooking1833 Pretty sure it won't. The anti-mold effect won't last too long. It is a shower cabin and water will wash it away very soon and within 1-3 months mold is back. I know it since I do it the same way. And if I may give some advice, I would not wait so long for fighting the mold.
Thank you!!!!!
My pleasure friend😁👍
Or you can buy some HG mould remover, and the mould won’t come back for months. Slightly more expensive than bleach, but you can use it on any affected surface, and you don’t need to leave it overnight.
I just put one of those cheap toilet bleach tablets in the corner of my tub. Still mostly intact 6 months later, and mold gone.
Toilet bowl cleaner works great
You don't need the kitchen towel. You can just wipe the bleach on with an old cloth and leave it overnight.
Please use gloves when handling aggressive chemicals (and possibly safety goggles -- you never know when something spills or splashes by accident).
Looks amazing! How does the bleach not discolour the plastic shower tray though?
I love sausages and I know paper is rich in fibre - so I passed over the bleach and just ate the sausages. Still got the mould though.

@@realcooking1833 joking apart, it is underway as I write this, I've given it a head start by doing it after my morning shower and leaving it 24 hours!

Ya a legend fella.
another one of handy andys tips and trix 👍does it work on grout mate?
Yes, get some masking tape and stick a bit of the paper on and squeeze the bleach on. When wet you can push the paper against the grout line and by morning it should be spotless👍
@@realcooking1833 cool, thanks man...the flouride in our water stains everything an orange colour, shows up on the grout lines in the shower where water hits often.
Baaaastards😂🤣😂
How can I remove mould from the grout between the tiles in my shower?
@fbfransa I'd use bleach on a tooth brush and scrub the grout line. Alternatively you could get strips of loo roll (toilet paper) and dip it in a strong bleach solution and apply it to the grout line and leave overnight😁👍
I now know I am old, I was doing this 30 years ago😢

I understand how bleach works but I have a biological septic tank and I can't use bleach. Any other suggestions?
Hi friend. A few people have offered alternative methods here in the comments. Vinegar or a product called hg mould cleaner(I think) have been suggested. I'm not sure if they are compatible with your tank system though
Actually you don't need bleach, you can use any chlorine based cleaning product you might already have at home. The chlorine alone will kill mold and whiten the silicone. I'm mentioning that as depending on the country you live in, a product labeled "bleach" may actually not be chlorine based but it might be based on hydrogen peroxide and while this seems to have the same effect at first, it won't have the same long lasting effect that chlorine has, that's because hydrogen peroxide is an acid whereas chlorine is a base, they both discolor but when it comes to killing mold, bases are more efficient than acids.
I'm not sure of the difference between hydrogen peroxide and organic peroxide but I once spilled organic peroxide in my van and it caused all the silicone seals in to lift from the panelling.
Fancy a Yorky to repeat how cheap it is.
Blinking good idea though
🤣😂🤣only difference between us and the Scots is, our pockets are deeper and our arms are shorter 😂👍
