  • Welcome to another salvage hunting video, in this video, I show how the spec lift works, why I secure the vehicles the way I do and finish with an awkward recovery, lost keys, vehicle pointing the wrong way and very little room to maneuver.

Hey kev, with the golf best way is to get as straight as you can on it, and even with the steering lock on you line the front wheels on the bed and anchor the brake pedal and as you winch it will pull in a straight line regardless what way the wheels are pointing.

Years ago when i was in the recovery trade, we had skid plates for vehicles like that golf, made up in workshop of checker plate, so we could load without to much hassle

May I suggest you check out a guy called Ron Pratt on TH-cam if you haven't already he runs a recovery company in the US spanning the full gamit from artic to private cars when it comes to recovering crashed or non runners in awkward spots he has all the tricks of the trade down .

Classic Ron trick, Winch the front 2 wheels on the deck then drive the truck forward to align the back wheels in a straight line for winching onto the deck whilst holding the foot brake on to mitigate the angle of the front wheels.

A suggestion for loading cars like that: carry a spray bottle filled with diluted dish detergent (the hand wash kind, not machines) and give a spray under the tires. They'll slide more easily. Cheers!

Hi Kev, great video as usual, I worked for European Metal Recycling for a few years and I was taken around to see where all the skips were so if the firm had to have an agency driver then I would navigate and operate the skip lifting gear! Great fun, no two days the same and I was told by one driver that I knew the job inside out just couldn't do the driving which was a real shame!

Interesting to see what's considered EOL in the UK. Here in SA that KA and Punto would be on the road for many more years, even if the engine is fubar, just stick a cheap Japanese imported engine in and Bob's your auntie. At my local parts store you'll still easily find new parts for vehicles that were build 30 odd years ago.

Good justification of strapping. I don’t drive transporters but cross strapping is the same as using springs to tie up boats on quaysides. The springs stop backwards and forwards movement.

Tip for scrap cars with no keys:
Break the steering lock off. On most cars it is part of the ignition barrel which is usually mounted in 2 pieces of weak cast alloy (top & bottom of the column, held together with bolts). Steel catches drop into the steering shaft either side to lock it. Clean way to do it is unscrew the plastic surrounds, slice through the top of the alloy either side of the top of the column with a battery grinder using a thin metal cutting disc, and just tap the whole lot a couple of inches off the column, only needs to pull the locking tabs clear. Brutal way is just to smash it off! The clean way usually takes me about 2 minutes.
Since it was on a fairly flat smooth surface, the other way you could have had that Golf straight on in one hit would be by carrying a couple of wheel dollies and a trolley jack in the tool lockers - assuming scrap wagons that posh have a tool locker!? All the ones I've driven have been 'well run in' 😄

Nothing wrong with how you’re strapping the cars. You have more than sufficient restraint to stop it moving in any direction. That is very similar to how I strap and chain many machines. Only thing I do differently is I use a bind guard where the straps cross, but that’s only because mine are generally at a steeper angle so more prone to bind against each other where as yours are virtually flat so unlikely that would be an issue for you.

    • @steveblick168
      @steveblick168 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Trouble is with vlogging, most viewers are critics and generally, they seem to think their way is best. Like you Shaneo, Russell Worthing carries a lot of machines and also straps / chains his load down exactly how Kev has done his and he knows his stuff. He also explains why in one of his vlogs - can't remember the exact words, but it stops the load from moving from side to side.

Never noticed the Cemex van before at the start right in the intro. Just noticed it's in the Trent yard. Looks new, too. It's usually the fitters that have those larger vans, suppose our lot probably lease them. Thanks for showing us all how it worked, always wondered and found it really interesting. Shame to see a MK4 Golf get scrapped, think they're one of the best cars that you can buy at the moment on a budget. Maybe not a shame with that one without keys, but they're decent cars. Might be biased as I have a MK4 Diesel Estate. That one you picked up still has MOT until December with less mileage than mine, too! They're probably a car I'd look for, 3 door, maybe GTI, doubt you'd find a R32 as salvage. Just as a cheap project, runaround to do a few mods to and then sell. Just something to have a bit of fun with. An early (up to 2007) MINI Cooper S might be a fun little project car. Pain to work on, but really fun to drive. A car scrapped just for having it's cats stolen 😲 I'd be dangerous with this job, I think more would end up on my driveway than back at the yard. Thanks for the video Kev, I'm still off work on furlough. Take it easy mate, stay safe, drive carefully 👍👍👍

Kev, just wondering, why your company planner or the office personnel do not do that job?
The reason I am asking is that if something goes wrong they can always say "Well, you choose to do it that way!!!" I am not saying that you are not capable of working the best route, it is just an unnecessary burden on the driver.
Kev, the actual crossing system was spot on but if I may suggest linking the hook of the ratchet just to the next available hooking point in your lorry bed. Basically what I am trying to say is that having one point for two loads is a bit too much pulling force in opposite directions, not that it might come off but it increases the tear and wear.
I used to salvage and or recover vehicles in serious accidents in Ecuador about 12 years ago and I used a galvanised hook rod to put it under the vehicle so I get what you are saying and you are totally justified to hook them under the vehicles as you see fit. You just may me bring good old memories there, thanks for the video.
You earned your keep with that grey VW to the side of the road, really good load.

With the Golf, couldn't you just break the Steering Lock? They do break quite easily.

Hi there, it was nice to see Frizzel (Poole gates) roundabout again and remember the amazing stunts people pulled off to get ahead in a rush hour queue coming from the Wessex way. I worked at Motor parts direct (PRC) before they moved to hamworthy and Brown Bros in Poole (Sharp road) for a while hence i know the area, long before i emigrated to Africa.
I'd like to ask why you leave the towed cars in neutral and the handbrake off when they are strapped down? Like the Punto?
Scrapping an Accord as the Cat was stolen......Wow......they cant be that much 'pattern parts', like a Bosal.......but for the KA, scrap em all, hateful little cars. I bought 3 from copart and remember trying to take a door off a scrapper at Trents only to discover it needs to be fully open to remove from the hinges. It was sat on top of a Mondeo and although we pushed it over as much as we dared it still wouldnt open enough against the adjoining stacked cars! (many years ago now). Blxxdy things!
Stay safe and I've subscribed. All the best.
