How the famous Eames Lounge chair was designed and made.
The Eames Lounge by Herman Miller -
This is the one 'must have' chair for anyone serious about relaxing at home.
The Eames Lounge Chair and ottoman, officially titled Eames Lounge (670) and Ottoman (671), were released in 1956 after years of development by designers Charles and Ray Eames for the Herman Miller furniture company.
    - First chair the Eames designed for a high-end market.
    - Made of molded plywood and leather. The heritage of the chair
goes back to the molded plywood chairs pioneered by the Eames'
in the 1940s. Charles Eames said his goal for the chair was that it
be "a special refuge from the strains of modern living."
    - Part of the permanent collection at MOMA - New York's Museum
    of Modern Art.
    - When it was first made Ray Eames remarked in a letter to Charles
that the chair looked "comfortable and un-designy" (sic). Charles's
vision was for a chair with "the warm, receptive look of a well-used
    first baseman's mitt".
    - The first Eames lounge chair and ottoman was made as a gift for
Billy Wilder, the director of "Some Like It Hot," "Irma La Douce," and
    "Sunset Blvd."
    - Made its public debut in 1956 on Arlene Francis's Home Show, a
predecessor of the NBC Today show. Commenting on the unique
design, Charles Eames told Francis, "We've never designed for a
fashion, and the Herman Miller furniture company has never, ever
requested that we do pieces for a market." During the interview, a
short film was shown in which a man--Charles described him as "a
typical Herman Miller employee"--assembled and disassembled the
lounge chair, showing how simple the design was.
    - Since its introduction, the chair has been in continuous production
by Herman Miller in America. Later, Vitra began producing the chair
for the European market. Immediately following its release other
furniture companies began to copy the chair's design. Some copies
were direct knockoffs, while others were merely 'influenced' by the
    design.
    - Chair with Ottoman retail for $3,200 - $8,000 USD depending on the
    selection of veneer and leather
    - In America, the chair is hand-made in Kentwood and Grand Rapids
    Michigan.

So many people buy for the clout and the fact that many know its worth a lot; the prestige.
I couldn’t care less about the monetary value. The Eames’ cared about quality and design and that’s what is important.

Hi, my aunt has a black label Rosewood chair/ottoman and offered to sell it to me for $1000. When I expressed interest, she inspected it and found a severe crack on the outer veneer of the seat bottom running from the center front to the stand. Other than this, the rest of the chair & ottoman is in mint condition. Of course I've also learned that the shock mounts need replacing. All this said, would this still be worth purchasing for $1000?

Modern chairs are more comfortable. It's not such a thick cushion to sit on, and you sit way down in there, close to the floor, and not easy to get up outta the thing. Better sit in it first before buying. I had to rebuild mine because the back busted. I repaired it using stainless steel connectors. I also installed a head rest.

@KODIAK - It's one of those, "if you have to ask..." type of items.
The brand name chair costs around $6,000. The off brand copy costs around $1,500.
And I must have bought the off brand chair because I never had $6,000.00 for a chair.
You can buy a car for that money. And that explains why it only lasted a couple of
years before I had to replace the hardware. And I still have it, sitting out back,
below the overhang, by the pool. They sell spare parts for this chair at Ebay, and

I just purchased a “standard” (classic) version because it has the exact proportions the Eames designed for this chair. If they wanted, they could’ve manufactured 2 versions (“standard” and “tall”), but they didn’t. The standard version is THE Eames Lounge Chair while the “tall” version was created by someone at Herman Miller in 2016, possibly with the blessings of the Eames family. In person, the tall version looks ungainly and out of proportion. One can comfortably sit in the standard original version if one lounges. It is, after all, a lounge chair. If you’re going to spend the money, buy the chair as it was originally intended by Charles and Ray Eames; Otherwise, save your dollars and buy a knock-off if you want the the “tall” version or, better yet, buy a La-Z-Boy. It has no providence, is not the iconic original, doesn’t reside in the New York Museum of Modern Art and has not been in continuous production since its inception. The “tall” version is, frankly, a money-grab compromise that should have been left for the Chinese to manufacture. You don’t mess with an American icon. Oh - my chair is the standard version, Edelman black all-grain full aniline leather, oiled santos Palisander shell. It cost $9,000 on sale with this configuration, probably the most costly and is as close to the original as you can get. Unfortunately, no down and duck feathers available, just foam for the seats). It seats as comfortable as all get-out and that’s a fact. I’m proud to own this chair and I love it

    • @LaunchpadGP
      @LaunchpadGP ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@exittiming2789 What a weird hill to die on. Are you insecure about your height? The tall version allows people over 6' to enjoy the quality and longevity of Eames design and HM craftsmanship without compromising on comfort. It is exactly that kind of combination of form and function that makes these chairs iconic.
Go to the HM website and watch the brief video on the chair's product page, depicting a side-by-side comparison of a (slightly above average height) man sitting in both versions. Pause it when he leans back in the chair and notice how his head goes over the back of the "original" chair. For a lounge chair that one plans to own for a lifetime, that's not ergonomic at all.
Perhaps you would be willing to sacrifice your own comfort so you can brag to internet strangers about having a chair that's less than 2" closer in height to the original. That's fine. That doesn't mean it's advisable for others to do the same, or that the chair shouldn't be produced. Frankly your take is annoying and unhelpful.

Exactly. also I remember around 10 years ago it cost around 4-5k I think, and I was thinking if I save up in 5-10 years I'd be able to afford it, but by then it cost 7-8k.
Aside from it's iconic design, for me the greatest value is really the comfort, I've tried other chairs in some show room where they had other expensive and iconic furniture too, but this one was just on another level. I just wish they redesign the structure because this old design doesn't seem to be able to take abuse. I mean I know they get the big guy to rock it 3x, but the chair is kind of more like a sofa, but I don't think that chair could handle that big guy throwing himself on it like it was a sofa. I'd hate to save up for 10 years and more to have that chair broken because I wasn't sitting down slowly.

I thought that the wooden parts were made out of an expensive grades of lumber, but... a plywood, i mean, yeah, bending a wood is a lot more complicated and sometimes isn't even possible beyond the certain point, but the price of the materials is dirt cheap then, with leather being probably the most expensive among everything else used here, but it isn't nearly cost the price. They are comfortable for sure, but the price comes from the fact that it was designed by Eames and that's all. But for some reason there are some things in the world that are literally "screaming" to buy them and this chair is one of them for sure, you just can't resist, that's what a good design is:D

I have a Balans Tripos (now called a Varier Gravity) I purchased in 1984 and wouldn’t trade it for any other chair. I’ve had it upholstered twice since so it’s quite durable. With my lower back issues it’s the only chair I can sit in with zero problems. Artistically, I find it more creative than any chair I’ve seen as well. See for yourself.

As I watch this video, I am sitting in my Ekornes Stressless recliner chair I bought 2 yrs. ago. It was a new open box item purchased from an Ekornes Stressless dealer in Florida. The model is the medium "Commodore" in a beautiful "pumpkin" colored leather. The model is now called the "Admiral". I believe the leather color is called Paloma. The chair was great up until a month or two ago. It seems the foam and padding are now collapsed and it feels like I'm sitting on a board. I'm 67 and was hoping the Ekornes would outlast me...not! I will never buy another Ekornes chair again. Now saving up for the "Eames" chair. Cheers!

it was a sad day at Herman Miller when the Eames product was outsourced to a supplier. While it has Herman Miller's name on it...it is not made by Herman Miller. Great looking lounge, but made for the smaller people of an earlier era. You can absolutely see that when the big guy in the gray shirt does the "rock test" - it looks like a kid's chair with him on it. I find sitting position way too far back and the overall feel very slouchy, and I think the seat is low and too hard to get up and out of. Love to have one one, but I doubt I'd sit in it much. Rather have a pair of Eames bent-wood chairs!

Ahhhh the Shock Mounts! A huge flaw in the design. Don't get me wrong... I'm a huge fan, but those shock mounts are weak. Probably the best they would do for the 50s, but these frequently break here and not just on the Lounge but on his other designs. Given the advancement in technology I am surprised that Herman Miller hasn't upgraded this with some sort of additional mechanical solution. I am speaking from experience BTW.

Buyer beware!! Do your research and know what you are getting into before investing in this piece of furniture!!!
Search "Broken Eames Chair Shock Mounts" in your web browser. You will be SHOCKED to see how many of these chairs break catastrophically within just a few years. I purchased one in 2013 because I believed that it was an heirloom quality piece of furniture that would be in my family for many years. It broke this year (2018) and Herman Miller has refused to repair it, because it is three months out of warranty. A quick bit of research revealed that the shock mounts holding the chair together routinely fail.
I feel a moral responsibility to fellow consumers to share what I have learned. The most helpful and informative website I found is oleklejbzon.com, belonging to a master carpenter in New Jersey who has repaired thousands of these chairs, at a hefty (read
