    Okay, I gotta acknowledge the addition of a new word to the knifemaker's dictionary:
    "Gription": A feature on a knife or other hand tool that increases the user's ability to firmly hold (grip) the knife or tool (e.g. jimping, stippling, texturing).

    I like it. I also didnt know that you should do the leather stitches in this way and i just stitched mine without caring about that. Wonder how big of a difference it makes. That said your holes are much cleaner but i push mine open with an awl by hand (not perfectly squared) leading to uneven holes especially on thick leather

    Nice little project. Your stitch is good and improving. What i do instead of doing 1 needle at a time i insert both needles at once, that way you eliminate the chance of splitting the thread. I use the tag ends on the needle to help push it thru. Now before i pull the needles all the way thru i take the thread on the left and lift it over the needle coming from the right. Then i take the thread on thme right and lift it under the needle coming from the left. Basicaly looping the the thread over the opposite needle, creating the locking knot then pull the needles thru to tighten up. Great idea on the heat shield for the oven. Did you use reflective tape or metal plate? Looks like ill be catiching up on all jy youtube subscritions for a few days as i just broke the drive belt on my sander. So waiting for new parts now. Still have the 1 x 30 to fall back on, but will have to see how it goes.

    Can I ask what it is you get out of just useing a file to determine if the steel is hard. How do you know what your temper is at best it's a guess I would think. I've asked other that just use a file and no one will answer. Just wondering with all the precision knife makers talk about why you dont use a Rockwell tester and take the guess work out of it. Thanks for the videos i really like the narration and not just music.

    • @RedBeardOps
      @RedBeardOps  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you sir. The file insures that you at least got the steel above the rockwell of a file which is generally pretty high. I know that by using 1084 and quenching in parks 50 that the chances of my quench going wrong is very slim. Each steel has a "standard" tempering curve that allows us to target the desired hardness... like you said this is not an exact science and having a rock well hardness tester would be helpful to nail down the process. They're expensive though and I don't currently have one! Maybe one day I'll be able to acquire a good one. Have a great week!

    Love the finished blade! very nice to have this small maneuverable knive I imagine. I use a filing Jig to bevel the head/roundknives I make this makes it easy and safe to create a nice even bevel following the curve of the blade. I also use old circular saw blades to get the steel for these, works great and they are wide enough for a full head knife.

    I love your work and videos yet the mono tone commentating puts me to sleep ! Get Samuel L.Jackson to narrate or safe drivers save 50% lol. Well at least you throw in ya'll every once in awhile to represent Texas.I'll keep watching though when I wake back up.
