Run Silent Run Deep written by US Navy Submarine Skipper Captain Edward L. Beach. The book was later adapted into a movie starring Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster.
The Director's Cut of "Das Boot" is an amazing WWII sub movie from the German point of view. It captures the claustrophobia and tension amongst a captain and crew who may not believe in the mission and what they are doing in the war. It's really, really solid.

You can tell how amazing an actor truly is, when they can play either a villain or a hero, with complete ease / conviction and you can completely hate or love them.
Gene Hackman is such an actor.

.....and yet in this film I feel like he is neither hero nor villian. As the final verdict of the panel makes clear. Washington and Hackman were both right *and* wrong.
@@jenmurrayxo Gene is an actor little known to current generations, since he retired from acting several years ago, but as you can see he is a character actor, he is intense in his roles, and he deserves a revisit of his classics.
@@jenmurrayxo One thing about Gene Hackman, he played the hard right conservative Capt. so well. However, his character did NOT do as some in real life would have done, told any lies which Denzel Washington's character, at the trial, worried about. In the end, Hackman did redeem himself with his testimony and admitted he was wrong. Of course, he uses the horse thing but still...that was his way of doing so without losing too much face.
Same with the COBB of the boat. He also did the right thing, by the book and not by the Captain even though the Capt and COBB served together. Some good stuff to learn there from this movie.

Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman always give it all they got. As a submarine thriller, I enjoyed "The Hunt for Red October" more, but still seeing these two powerhouse actors chew up the scenery is something to behold.
Try Run Silent Run Deep. Same basic idea of Capt v XO. Clarke Gable v Burt Lancaster. WWII.

I like this conflict between two characters who each try to do the right thing, but disagree about what that is. I saw this in the cinema, with no regrets.
By the way, that music is the "Navy Hymn" For those in peril on the sea" an old standard church hymn. Which is also why they sung it aboard the Titanic as they were sinking in the knowledge they had to die so the women could live.
Fun fact: due to the depiction of a mutiny aboard a US Naval vessel, the Navy declined to offer any assistance or cooperation with production. So the producer and director basically had to improvise and play it by ear.
The moment you see CNN on a French carrier you know the DoD didn't like the script.
Also the Submarine they showed submerging was the real Alabama 😮
Since there was no law on using helicopters to film Submarines submerging, and the real Alabama happened to be there at the time 😱
For the closest historical event to this film, search for “Vasily Arkhipov”. He was the XO aboard a Soviet sub during the Cuban Missile Crisis. That sub was out of communications with Moscow and the crew had a very incomplete understanding of what was going on when they were engaged by a group of U.S. Navy destroyers enforcing the blockade of Cuba. On Soviet subs, three people had to agree in order to fire a nuclear weapon: the captain, the XO, and the political officer. On Arkhipov’s sub, the captain and the political officer agreed that they should fire a torpedo with a nuclear warhead at the U.S. destroyers. Arkhipov refused that order and very likely prevented a nuclear war.

Back in the day, there was an ex-Navy guy in the IMDb forum for this movie, and he explained the actual regulations and procedure for nuclear launch and how they applied to this movie:
1. Ramsay was right to launch the nukes as soon as they got the order to launch. Once the President makes the decision to launch and the sub gets the order, they are supposed to launch. Not to wait for any last minute recalls. The act of ordering nuclear launch is supposed to be as if you’d pulled the trigger and fired a bullet from a gun. It’s not an order you can take back. Thus, he said the real villain of this movie was the indecisive President who ordered launch and then changed his mind and tried to cancel it.
2. However, Ramsay had no authority to remove Hunter for disagreeing with him and refusing to launch. The “two man rule” exists for a reason. It would’ve defeated the entire point of requiring two men to agree to launch if Ramsay could just remove the XO and appoint a new one to go along with him. They could not fire unless both men agreed, period.
This is why the movie stated “you were both right, and you were both wrong.” Technically, they were indeed both right and both wrong.
As an aside, the US Navy disagreed with the script and refused to cooperate with the studio in making the movie. Thus, the movie crew actually had to stake out a naval sub base and wait for the submarine to head out on actual patrol in order to film it going into the water.
I know I already made a comment, but I wanted to answer your question as to how they could tell it was an Akula class submarine. I was a sonar technician (STS3 Loh). Our job was to listen to the water and identify threats. Each vessel has different frequencies that our equipment was designed to identify. A 60 hz signature would probably mean there was a motor generator on board any given vessel. That would eliminate some possibilites. Also, the propulsion system is distinctive for different types of vessels. Are there one or two screws (propellers)? Does the propeller have four, five, or seven blades? Each identified component brings you closer to identifying what type of vessel you're dealing with. We are also able to identify what direction they're heading, how far away they are, and how fast they're traveling. All this helps us figure out how we want to proceed. Should we engage, or turn away to avoid them? Sonar is instrumental in guiding the submarine strategically.
To my eyes „the boat“ by Wolfgang Petersen is worth watching the most
I served on board the USS Wyoming, SSBN 742. Fires are totally serious business. One day, I was woken up by the announcement over the speakers, "There's fire up in this b1tch!" I tell you, every single one of us dressed out and awaited further instruction. There are designated first responders, and you don't want to overcrowd their efforts. While we waited, the fire in the galley was extinguished. We each have emergency air breathing masks that we keep in our racks. All along the submarine are air stations. They're attachments in the ceiling that you can hook your mask to via a tube. On the floor underneath the stations are sand paper-like stickers (like the top of a skateboard) so that you can feel them even if visibility is low. We also have to be proficient in fighting flooding. At boot camp, we have to learn how to differentiate between several different kinds of fires, such as grease, electrical, etc. You have to fight each one differently, or else you can just make things worse. On the sub, we drilled all the time on how to put out fires, and fight flooding. And we each had to be CPR proficient.

@@jenmurrayxo To me, the confined space was no different than being in a building. I was on an Ohio class submarine (boomer), while they were on a "fast attack". Longest we were out to sea was nearly four months, so just over a hundred days. Boomers generally have shorter deployments than fast attacks, but sometimes there are extenuating circumstances. We do what the Navy needs.

@@jenmurrayxo Definitely might be a problem for someone who is claustrophobic. Of course, the Navy does its best to try to weed out sailors who might have problems being confined in a metal "tube" hundreds of feet down in the ocean depths.

I like this movie a lot, though I like Hunt For Red October better. Something I hadn’t noticed until it was pointed out by another reactor recently is the director’s use of color to depict crew loyalty. Red for Hackman, blue for Denzel, and how the crew members’ colors correspond…or change…with their loyalties.

@@LordVolkov For sure. One example is the love scene in Top Gun and the love scene in True Romance, which are both shot similarly, with that same blue light he likes to use a lot.
Great video! Ex-submariner here. Its not so bad underwater. Its like only staying in your house for 65 days lol (okay maybe its a little rough) and I can only recall one time where we were out to sea for about that long. Its usually a bit less depending on what you are doing (regular underway vs deployment/on-a-mission) and you are either in home port otherwise or at a liberty/work port in another state or country.
And yeah, a lot of things arent too realistic. The movie is def a work of fiction; with a lot of things happening probably just to get these ideas/concepts in the viewers head (and be entertaining), but I think its a fun watch. Great actors.
If you're scared of submarines you should definitely watch the German film Das Boot.

Denzel was also brilliant in "Malcolm X" and "Hurricane", he could've easily won the Oscar for both of them.
Run Silent, Run Deep is a great WW2 submarine drama from 1958 starring Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. Another is Operation Petticoat. It's a submarine comedy starring Cary Grant and Tony Curtis. There's even a rom-com angle to it.
Operation Petticoat (the movie, not the TV show) is one of my "comfort food" movies!

Hi, Jen. Some of the US Navy's attack type subs are based down here in San Diego but, the big missle boats move in and out of Bangor, Washington for Pacifc patrols. That's more in your corner. A patrol runs 70, not 65, days as long as the food lasts. Once the sub dives below the waves upon leaving Bangor, it won't resurface for that whole time until it's almost back at Bangor. Except for the periscope, there aren't any windows. There's nothing to see, anyway. What one hears on sonar is what's important. To be a submariner takes a special mindset and special training. You stay classy, Jen.
The music is by Hanz Zimmer. Who has become a big name in movie music since the late 90s. He works a lot with Christopher Nolan (like the partnerships between Burton & Elfman or Speilberg & Williams).
A good action movie is U-571 with Matthew McConaughey, a comedy would be Down Periscope with Kelsey Grammer, and even though it's in German with subtitles, I am a huge fan of the very gritty Das Boot.
An excellent film. Hackman & Washington are truly amazing in this film. And excellent direction from Tony Scott...RIP.
Zero bubble means level, like an old school spirit bubble level used to see if your bookshelf is level. 5 degree down bubble (when they're diving) means 5 degrees down as measured from the horizon.
More recent submarine-flix that are worth reacting to are 'U-571' with Mathew McConaughey, and 'K-19 the Widow maker' with Harrison Ford! The film 'U-571' is a story based on a possible scenario, while 'K-19' is based on an actual event!
It's funny how you mention that it's like being in space, but underwater. Astronauts have described being on the ISS as like being on a submarine, but in space. 🤣
An absolute master class in acting, Hackman v Washington. I can't fathom being an extra on set and watching it first hand.
Retired Navy here. Yes, there are a LOT of sailors that are out of shape while serving. Also, I was in the surface community, but I did do in port work on the Alabama while on shore duty in Washington.

Hans Zimmer in the music of Crimson Tide, Hans in the 90s was highly sought after by Hollywood, today even more so, but at that time he was starting his career in Hollywood with great success. . Another good submarine movie is U-571 (2000) with Matthew Mcconaughey, Bill Paxton and Harvey Keitel, highly recommended!!

There's just SOMETHING about submarine movies that I just LOVE... the added "pressure" of being in such a hostile environment... the close quarters... the literal BLIND flying through liquid space with nothing but one's ears and GPS/satellites (in terms of modern subs) to guide them.
Crimson Tide and the Hunt for Red October are two of the modern classics in this genre.

I knew you'd Love this one Jen, and you literally were on the edge of your seat too! (LOL) To answer your "Bubble" question, that refers to the angle of the submarine: "Zero Bubble" basically means to float the submarine flat-and-level, whereas Down-Bubble implies (and warns the crew) how steep-ly angled the submarine is going to dive!
Also, I do have one minor Note for Steph on this one: if Jen ever asks for another cigar, I'd suggest making it smaller next time. IMHO, it kinda looked like Jen was smoking a Cartoon-ed Carrot!

A very underrated movie with great performances from the actors.
I will recommend "The Abyss" for another superb underwater adventure.

I spent six years in the Navy and made six Polaris deterrent patrols aboard the USS Robert E. Lee, SSBN-601. I wanted to like this movie because I like the actors, especially Gene Hackman. Unfortunately, in the real world, the XO would have followed orders and a nuclear war would have started. The XO doesn't ever second guess the CO, especially for life or death moments. In that respect, the CO is God. The movie gave you a "feel good" ending that should have never happened, but the writers placed the sub and crew in an almost impossible predicament.
While we did have .45s for use topside, I think the preferred weapon for use below decks was a shotgun. While we never had occasion to issue weapons on patrol, I know the missile techs were all trained in using shotguns and we had shotguns in the small arms locker. Personally, I would have grabbed Robert E. Lee's cavalry saber from the display case in crew's mess. 😀
The Navy needs to get back to the 41 for Freedom model with what's left of the Ohio Class and new Columbia Class.
If you liked this one I highly recommend No Way Out.. and it even has Gene Hackman in it!
I've seen a hand full of interviews with some of the greatest British actors and when they were asked who their favorite American actor was, they said Gene Hackman. Hearing that really made me stop and rethink what I thought of him as an actor. I already liked him, but that gave me a new respect for him as one of the greatest actors of all time.
Oh man! My brother and father were both missile technicians on the same class of sub portrayed in the Navy, and my brother was on the actual USS Alabama. He said they'd watch this movie every couple days whenever they'd be underway. I grew up watching it so much as a result; an absolute favorite!
Zero bubble means level. Served 5 years on a ballistic missile sub. This movie really brought back a lot of memories.

Good choice. One of the better submarine movies and well worth adding to the list of those films mentioned by the officers in the bus at the start of the movie. As for where is was filmed, yes those were movie sets.
This was the first new (at that time) rated R movie my father liked enough to take me to see. I was 9 or 10 at the time and I gotta say, I was seriously BLOWN AWAY by the concept and execution of the plot, and I absolutely adore this movie now.

Just imagine launch and impact to wipe them off the map before they can launch or Japan gets wiped off the map or the US could lose a few cities or both coast. All depends on where and how. Then you know how long you wont be able to go there and how many people become white shadows or die to the radiation poisoning.
Alabama has like 24 missiles and those could have 8-14 warheads but supposedly some have only 4 warheads due to a treaty. If one sub or one missile has that many warheads imagine what the land based one could be launching at us.
Looking stuff up for a quick comparison. "eight Mk-5 RVs with 475-kt W88 warheads" breaks a treaty but you bet only half of them are armed with only 4.
15 - 21 kt were the two dropped on Japan looking like a fire cracker compared to one of the eight at 475 kt. Blowing up people with the fraction of the power of a small star is hard to understand. A simple "was a city = 21" < "475 X 8 X 24 = armageddon" is so much easier to see.
The best submarine film in my opinion is Das Boot from 1981, it is so atmospheric and realistic, you should definitely watch it Jen 👍

Oh, Jen, yet another amazing movie and reaction. This has been one of my favorites (and I have a short list, most of them from the 70's and 80's that no one in their right mind would react to) since it came out. You're right, the music score is right up there with one of the best - Hans Zimmer won a grammy for the score. I also love that both the antagonist and protagonist are ridiculously relatable. It's a movie that makes you think with no clear right answers.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Hackman, Washington, Mortenson....Scott Grimes is even in this (from Band of Brothers). Those Lipizzaner stallions though...

I can''t think of a movie where Gene Hackman's performance wasn't outstanding. The man is a legend imho.
One more note, even back in the 1990's when this movie was made/set, smoking was only permitted in designated "smoking areas" aboard Navy ships. I never did duty aboard a submarine, but I would guess that, due to the confined quarters, smoking was even more restricted. In the present Navy, a commanding officer can forbid smoking alltogether if he so chooses.
My dad was a sub Capt. The bald guy at the end during the "hearing" part was the Navy advisor on the film and a good friend of our family. He was also a Capt and under my dad when he was his squadron commander. I was able to go on a day trip around Hawaii back in the 80's on his sub. Went 150' down to cruise around since the surface was making other family members sick -- so I was the Capt's boss' son - talk about Navy brat LOL
I remember seeing this when it came out, and it’s still kind of amazing. A big budget summer blockbuster where 80-percent of the movie is talking.
Great reaction. The main cast in this movie are spectacular. My "low-key MVP" is Viggo Mortensen. This is the 2nd movie in '95 that cemented him as a personal favorite. The other movie was called The Prophecy... Viggo played Satan. In case you don't know... he later played fan favorite character Aragorn in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy.

Absolutely no on serving on a submarine. Back in the 80's, of COURSE I wanted to go into the Navy and fly an F-14 .. however, the recruiter asked if I always wore glasses. Answer, yes. Recruiter, we have some great positions in our submarine fleet you may want to pursue. Yup, I went to college.

Another military movie with Gene Hackman that I think you'd enjoy is, Behind Enemy Lines. It was Owen Wilson's first leading man movie role. When the studio had reservations about Owen Wilson, Gene Hackman insisted to the studio that Owen was the right choice.

Run Silent, Run Deep is a great WWII sub movie & another "clash of wills".
Running the drill straight after the fire was the RIGHT thing to do. Do you think the enemy will kindly wait for everything to be fixed and shiny before they attack? What if a fire starts during battle, do you call “time out” and hope the bad guys stop shooting at you? Or do you train to fight whilst your boat is on fire?
I love this movie for the action, and Hunt for Red October for the drama.
As for sub movies, The Enemy Below (with Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens 😄) and Run Silent Run Deep (Clark Gable, Burt Lancaster) are both excellent.
Gene Hackman won Oscars for The French Connection (crime action thriller) and Unforgiven (fictional Western).
Denzel Washington won Oscars for Glory (Civil War drama) and Training Day (crime thriller).
Any of these would be fantastic for a reaction.

Tony Scott (RIP) would work with Denzel 5 times across his filmography - Crimson Tide, Deja Vu, Man On Fire, Taking of Pelham 123 (the 2009 remake), and Unstoppable. They are all worth a watch.

First movie where I really noticed Viggo Mortensen as an actor. He turns his typical good performance as usual. When I saw him as Aragorn in Lord of the Rings, I knew he'd be great.
I first saw him as Lucifer in "God's Army". Scared the shit out of me, back then.

I love that you love it! As for sub movies, the ones that come to mind are "U-571" and "Hunter Killer". I'd also like to point out Thirteen Days, a movie about the Cuban Missile Crisis. As For Gene Hackman I'd recommend "A Bridge Too Far"(all-star cast in their younger years WW2) and "Enemy of the State" ... but it's more a Will Smith movie. Denzel has a ton of good ones I know. "The Hurricane" I feel is a little less known, "Pelican Brief" and "Courage Under Fire... I think would be my recommendations for him.

They were trying to make the Russians surface with "practice" depth charges. How would you know they were "practice charges? I kind of question this part of the story I think we were trying to sink them.
The Russian sub commander thought they were under attack. He and the political officer authorized the launch of a nuclear torpedo. Luckily the Commodore of the sub flotilla sent to Cuba was on board.
He countermanded the order and surfaced his vessel possibly stopping WWIII. Upon his return his superiors told him "It would have been better if he had gone down with the ship".
He was also one of the heros of the "K-19 nuclear sub accident (watch the movie K-19 Widowmaker", it has Harrison Ford) BTW the man's name was Vasily Arkhipov you should lookup his wiki. ( K-19 is a separate page so no spoilers).

I'm telling ya, "A Few Good Men" for a Navy film that takes place completely on land. Cruise, Nicholson, Bacon, Demi Moore! Can't go wrong. 😉
One of the things I find interesting with reactions to this movie, is to see how many ppl realizes(or not) that one of the crewmen(Weps) is "Aragon"(Viggo Mortensen). Surprisingly few people notices that its him :D

I think that only movie shot inside a real sub is German Das Boot, one of the finest submarine movies ever made. It was kind of half set there they had cross-sections on see-saws making the crampness and movements look real. It was nominated for 6 Oscars.
I forgot that they keep calling the submarine a "ship" in this movie. That seems like such a simple mistake that base level research would have informed them about. It is a wonderful movie apart from that 😂
What would have been the more appropriate nomenclature? Simply "sub"?

and it comes from the early sub days when the diesel boats were small and called pigboats because of the everpresent stink of diesel fuel

My father was a navigator on one of the first boomers in Rickover's fleet. Had to survive an interview with the Admiral 1 on 1. When the Admiral's yeoman asked how it went after my father left the Admirsl's office, my Dad just said "I don't think he likes me." Must have gone ok, he got the post. And he had to try three times to resign his commission after my older sister was born.

My knees go absolutely weak at heights. Can't go near a floor to ceiling window in a highrise building and stay back from lookouts too. Yet I am a pilot. I love aerobatic flying etc. Something very comforting about being strapped into a cockpit and in control of the aircraft. So oddly enough my fear of heights evaporates in an aircraft.
Not only a pilot but specifically a "Naval Aviator" and had the opportunity many years ago to volunteer to help restore a former Soviet submarine for display. We were first to get our hands on a Russian sub after the collapse of the Soviet Union. We took it from Vladivostok in Eastern Russia all the way to Sydney Australia where we studied it's systems carefully and later put it on display in the Sydney Maritime Museum for a while. Today that same boat is tied up in Longbeach California. My point being that I enjoyed the 6 weeks aboard that submarine. Felt so comfortable in that confined space like nothing could touch me. Maybe that's also why being in an aircraft cockpit makes me at ease in the air?

That's _another_ detail this movie fudges a bit. See, the _Alabama_ is an Ohio class submarine. It's designed to accommodate 15 officers and 140 enlisted.
This scuffle, though, was between _enlisted_ and one of the people who stepped in to break it up was an _officer._ That would not happen in real life. See, when there's a fist-fight happening, those who try to break it up risk getting punched. You punch someone _enlisted,_ they'll probably punch you right _back._ But striking an _officer_ is a court-martial offense.
Thus, when there's a fist-fight going on, officers make it a point to keep their distance and leave it to the enlisted to break it up.

Keep in mind this movie is 100% unrealistic in terms of what goes on in a US ballistic missle sub.
Gene Hackman's one of my favourite actors - The Birdcage, The Conversation, The French Connection, The Quick and the Dead.. Absolute favourite is Scarecrow, but that probably wouldn't make a very good youtube reaction.
Gene and Denzel never worked together again, but they did both work with the director, Tony Scott, some more. Hackman did Enemy of the State, which I love, and Denzel did several - I actually really liked Unstoppable, Scott's last.
and Das Boot is THE submarine movie, if you're looking for more of that

Having worked on many projects, it is always a set built on soundstage. The exteriors are bought and worked out for those shots; but the exterior/interior transitions are creatively handled with edits and camera tricks.

I’d like to recommend The Manchurian Candidate staring Denzel Washington. The original with Frank Sinatra & Angela Lansbury is also very good. My favorite Denzel movie is Training Day. And my favorite Gene Hackman movie is Hoosier. But any movie with either actor is a quality movie and worth you time.
