Michael Biehn does a really great job of selling Reese's love, devotion, and admiration to Sarah in that hotel scene. He also does a great job of portraying Reese in constant state of readiness and awareness. It was his idea to have Reese look into the camera & try to speak to the "person in authority" in the interrogation scene. He was an underrated actor. He was also in Aliens and The abyss, both James Cameron movies as well. He had a brief scene in T2 but was edit from the theatrical version. It's in the extended version.

This was James Cameron's "Look what I can do" movie. It took all the skills he'd learned working as an art director for Roger Corman's cheapie genre movies... Cameron is an artist, matte painter, writer, model builder, director, cinematographer... the only thing he cant do on a film set is act. This movie looks like it cost 5 times more than it did. The sequel is Cameron with the world's biggest (for its time) budget... so it's a fun way to contrast what the same filmmaker can do with next to nothing vs hundreds of millions of dollars.

Stan also did FX work on Aliens, Predator 1 & 2, T2, Punpkinhead (also directed it), and Jurassic Park (all the on set puppet dinosaurs).
Fun fact: Lance Hendrickson (cop in this movie, Bishop in Aliens) was Cameron's pick to be the Terminator (see Near Dark to find out how that might have worked). Cameron was forced to see Arnold by a producer.. he reluctantly went... had no intention of hiring him.. but his angular face, his imposing figure and the fact that he brought up Yul Brenner's performance as the killer robot in the 70s Westworld film convinced Cameron to hire him.. Arnold was still unsure.. he didnt want to.do villain roles... so James did a painting of Arnold as the Terminator and sent it to him to convince him that, even though hes the villain, hes the default "hero" of the movie.

"He's so giant." When Arnold was running for Governor of California he came to the local mall in my city. I was shocked at how short he was. I'm 6'2" tall and he was way shorter than me, although there were way too many people in front of me to do a direct comparison.

So some trivia for this movie, it all was because of a dream. James Cameron was directing a movie called Piranha 2: The Spawning, had to fly out to Rome to work on it and it left him broke cause it was a cheap movie. Because he had no money, he had to live on leftover food in the hotel he was staying at which led to him getting food poisoning and being sick in bed. While sleeping, he had a nightmare about a metal endoskeleton coming at him out of an explosion with kitchen knives. When he woke up, he had the idea for the Terminator.

My Goodness. As a child of the 80's (born 1970), we were SO spoiled by all the fantastic films released during that decade! Not that there wasn't plenty of junk then & not that good movies aren't being made now, but that decade probably contains the largest collection of all-time classics.
As a 13-year old, this film Blew. Me. Away. I guess because the name, 'Kyle' was so rare at that point, I identified with Reese a bit more than normal. (Yes, that's my first name. ^_^ ) And though I've never fought any Terminators, I have had some love affairs in my life that were just as poignant & ended just as tragically. Jen was blessed with off-kilter, good looks. Brad Fiedel composed the music for The Terminator(1984). He played it with an Oberheim synthesizer. He also wrote music for Cameron's True Lies(1994). The Terminator feels like a 1970's slasher movie at times. Bess Motta appeared in lewd 1980's workout tapes on VHS. She worked on the failed TV show The New Monkees. My Mother *hated* it. LOL!

Micheal Biehn said that his two favourite roles were Johnny Ringo (from "Tombstone") and Kyle Reese. He said he loved this role because Kyle Reese gets to tell the audience what's going on in the film through the dialogue.

You aren't the only one who was thinking that Arnold would be the good guy. James Cameron did at first, too. Then Arnold read the script and decided that "They didn't call the movie 'Kyle Reese.'" Arnold lobbied James Cameron to play the Antagonist instead, and it turned out to be a breakout movie for both. Michael Biehn landed the role of Reese and played a great tough, street-smart underdog who Sarah and the moviegoers all fall in love with.
One neat thing about Arnold playing the Cyborg was that his background in bodybuilding and competition gave him great experience and knowledge in moving his body. Isolating movements, moving in ways most people don't. He brings that to the character of the Cyborg, and it works brilliantly.
