Saw this movie at the premiere in Telluride. It is a fantastic film. Very experimental and stays with you long after the credits roll. Can't wait for everyone else to see it
Per IMDB: Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Colson Whitehead, Nickel Boys chronicles the powerful friendship between two young African American men navigating the harrowing trials of reform school together in Florida.
@@Estrellitawilliams Yes. From its opening in 1900, the Marianna site was an open campus of about 1400 acres without any perimeter fencing. The site was originally divided into two sub-campuses, South Side or "Number 1", for white students, and North Side, or "Number 2", for "colored" students. The sections were segregated until 1966. Wikipedia has lots more. Marianna is only about an hour from me. I had not heard of this (but others yes).
I saw this movie at Telluride Film Festival. It was a beautiful movie. Great cinematography and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor was a deadpan perfection as a grandmother. What a bravura performance!
Saw this at my school’s film festival. Thought about it for a while. It may be the most visually creative film I have ever seen and truthfully the content will stick with me for the rest of my life. RaMell Ross spoke with us after the viewing and is such a passionate person with a kind heart. I highly recommend this film.
This is going to be brutal and devastating. It feels like the kind of great films I only ever watch once and never watch again because it is soul-crushing. I can't wait.
@@vince__2k I might start with his most recent film, Vortex, considering that it's way more tender than Irreversible. If you enjoy the language of Nickel Boys, you might enjoy Enter The Void, since it's probably the best use of POV.
@@Saltpeanutss Nah, it's not Malickian at all. He has never used POV, he generally uses wide angle lenses, he isn't a fan of 4:3 aspect ratio, the acting in his films is far more improvisational, he generally uses choral music, the tone is different, etc. Enter The Void is obviously a darker film but it uses POV for almost the entire duration and it uses it in a very similar manner.
I bawled my eyes out at the end of this book. If this movie is any good, I might have the same reaction in the theater 😩 Can’t wait to see it tho. Cinematography looks gorgeous
Can't wait! Amazing book. Side note: The book cover design is brilliant. It foreshadows a twist at the end, but you won't get it until you reach the end of the book.
I heard a story about the book on NPR. Before I watched this trailer I did not think I wanted to see this because of what happened to these boys. But, this trailer looks hopeful. I think I will see it.
I read this book i few years ago it was good but i said i would never watch the movie if the made it into a film. Fair warning to anyone who hasn't read the book this one is gonna hurt.
0:17-0:35s don't make any sense. The guy approached him asking about "that" kid he (himself) used to hang out with all the time. The he says, "I don't know what boy you want me to remember". What in the world?
There's modern trailers that show too much of the movie, and then trailers like this that dont show enough. Can i at least get an idea of what the central conflict may be?
Haven't seen the film, but having read the book, I can say this trailer is somewhat deceptive. The story is *very* disturbing and by no means "inspirational" as this trailer might suggest. Phenomenal novel though. I couldn't recommend it highly enough and the film looks great!
I look forward to it. But it will be the storytelling, not the aesthetic that will determine if it's a masterpiece. Based on the trailer, the aesthetic is nothing but a rehash of the current Black artsy aesthetic made popular by Barry Jenkins and Arthur Jafa's disciples: Kahlil Joseph, Terence Nance, and Bradford Young.
They will argue with a Judge in a Courtroom! Miss Cloroxia! if you say one more word! i will find you in contempt! and give you a 60 year Sentence!. BUT! YOUR'E NOT LETTING ME TALK! AND! AND! AND!.
@@jackdonohue7893 I watched it a second time and same thing, what am I missing Jack? Something about a boy in the past and someone picks up a nickel from the floor. No plot, nothing.

Thats awesome the book is pretty sad.
That’s so cool you got to see it at Telluride. I think that it’s very unique that they filmed this in the first person point of view.
Looking forward to it!!
Have you read the novel? I’m curious how faithful it is.
Any ghai stuff in it?
My son is one of the incredible actors in this movie I can not wait. CONGRATULATIONS
That’s so cool 😊
My brother starred in this movie! Cant wait to support him and go see it

Congrats to your brother
That is incredible, congratulations to him!! 💖💖💖
Thank you! 🫶🏼
That is how a trailer should be! Most trailers these days show the whole movie. This one leaves you guessing.

The book is SO GOOD. I highly recommend it!
I wish they made it clear that the school was open for 111 years and it was highly abusive. Boys being murdered there as well
@@Estrellitawilliams I hope they do in the movie. It's a very important story to be told.
@@jsk8snrich1 I hope so as well

Having read the book, I can see why they went with a character POV shot throughout the movie.
Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor is such a powerhouse and anything she stars in has my attention. Can't wait to see this!

The book broke my heart. I can't wait for the film to do the same.
this trailer has "depth" written all over it. Definitely one of those movies to go to the theater with fam or friends!
The book is intense. I can't wait for this!

this is going to legendary in terms of cinematography. Love every camera angle used
That masterpiece should be the best picture nominee

Googled the book to see what this is about. This one is going to be a heart wrencher for sure 😢

Seems unique…very pretty too❤❤❤

The Tree of Life vibes, WE ARE SO HERE.
More like Enter The Void vibes, given the visual grammar.

this fictional story is based off the real "school," The Dozier School for boys. It absolutely wrecks me that our Black boys were treated like this.
I smell some Academy Award nominations.
this is awesome. we are reading this now in my college English class and to come on TH-cam and see a trailer for it is dope!

Just finished the book - deffo recommend it - now they have made a movie. Look forward to watching this.
The book was amazing. I can’t wait to see the film
The book is a masterpiece!
This looks good!!! Congrats to MGM and Orion Pictures for coming out with great films from underrepresented groups in the last feee years.
The novel was great, a heartbreaking page turner. It will be interesting to see how the story plays on film.
Looks amazing and creative
So glad RaMell Ross is getting some well deserved attention. Hale County This Morning, This Evening is such a beautiful piece of filmmaking.
Reading the book now, can’t wait to see how it is adapted. Great author!

I CANNOT wait for this, What a novel.
Looks incredible.
Great book. Coslon Whitehead is a master. If the film does half what the book did, it'll be film of the year.
I loved the book...
Colson Whitehead has some amazing pieces. Nickel Boys is a great novel and I’m a fan of the Harlem Shuffle as well.
The book is good. Film looks like it is shot well.
if they don't give my girl an oscar already!
I can see the Oscar nominations with this one
Can't wait, is this coming to theatres??
What's happening to our young black men is not normal today 2024..I want to see this movie
What's happening to our young black men that's not their fault?
Sadly, there are too many kids out of wedlock. Their are problems internal and external within our community 😢
Where can i see the movie?

Get ready to be absolutely devastated

Is the film American Fiction based on the life and work of Colson Whitehead?!? I think I see some parallels.

What did he do with the donkey?
Is Hollywood allowed to make movies about two black men? Where's the black female plotline?
looks like juvinile jail or something, is this like "Bad Boys" 87 with Sean Penn
I don't get dramatic film trailers anymore. There's always music, scenery, someone asking vague questions.
Thomas Jeffrey Miller Betty Thompson Dorothy
Why is it in 4:3?
Because that’s how the movie was shot
thats how the movie was shot
It's more intimate and evokes the feeling of being incarcerated and your experiences limited
Why not?
