I read "The Nickel Boys" last year and found it to be not only a powerful story but the writing was extraordinary. As of today, I am halfway through "Harlem Shuffle" which was a Christmas present from my wife. Since I grew up in the 50's and 60's the "vibe" is familiar (and right.) Throughout Mr. Whitehead's work, you can see how Black culture has been molded and shaped by the dominant white culture, while at the same time seeing how people are people, white or black, with the differences mainly a function of conditioning. At least that's one of the things I've taken from his work. Above all, he is a GREAT story teller!
Interesting. Sounds like a movie my father produced in 1980 called "Brubaker", about a reform warden played by Robert Redford who tries to reform the most corrupt prison in America and discovers unmarked graves of dead prisoners buried on the farm lands surrounding the prison.
I’m reminded of a quote from adult film star, Uschi Digard on why she learned so many languages: because she didn’t to lose their essence when she read works that are translated (paraphrasing).
I suppose her royal genius read the ancient classics in original Greek? The white house boys AKA Nickel Boys struggle with a 1950s Weekly Reader. Many have the reading comprehension and speed of third graders. Lucky for us they are voters, right? Sure, now we are saved.
Interesting that they only focus on the black kids that were there, when it had white kids that went there too: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_School_for_Boys
*I remember when Clifford Irving got plenty of 'Hosannas & Praise' as well* ( *let me know when this guy writes in King's league...selling books by the MILLIONS* )
Well you let me know when you do anything worth more than scribbling about on the back of a bar bathroom stall door, and I will consider caring about your opinion on Colson Whitehead's work!!!! 😂
Why is that funny? That was his parent's story. They could only pass down their truths to him. He had to go forward and make his own. To he quite honest, I was surprised to learn it was a woman he was married to.....
Nine months later, your comment is still interesting and about something important. Maybe he grew past his parents' pain ... maybe a white person rose above her history. Either way, best to the whole family.
I finished Nickel Boys today. It is a book I will never forget. Thank you,Mr. Whitehead.
I started it today. If it wasn’t so late I would have read it!!!❤❤ incredible writer!!!
Saw the trailer for the movie Nickel Boys and followed the path to Colson Whitehead. I'm glad I'm finally here, home at last

Thanks so much for posting and featuring this writer, Mr. Colson Whitehead.
Let's pray those tortured souls receive some level of justice.

I read Nickel Boys a few years ago while on vacation... I will never forget this unbelievable incredible book. A masterpiece...
L'ennesimo Capolavoro di Colson.
Attraverso la devastante ignoranza del male per arrivare alla più concreta Poesia.

Black America's story back in the day.
Anybody surprised Whitehead married a Yt aristocratic woman should read WEB DuBois' 'Souls of Black folk' where he covers 'double consciousness"
Yes I'm going to have to reread that

Go write a book about it then
Y'all want Wytes to be the center of everything, even tragedies.

It's funny how he talks about what his parents said about white people, and yet he married one.
@Carmela Szymanski Where is what stated?

Evidently, he doesn't stereotype.
@@carolynbrown3379 Sure he does.
