Its a shame to know that a hell of a lot of the old trucks tractors and cars went to for scrap great to see you trying to save what you can . Thanks for putting in the time to show us
Graduated from a Ford D1000 with a 6v53 Detroit to a G88 when I was a young fella it was a major step up. Had the volvo 16 speed with a separate spitter lever on the dash. It was one of those trucks and you wish you could find restore and enjoy. One of those old trucks you get a soft spot for, they didn't set the world on fire for horse power and engine braking but still loved driving it.
My old man bought a brand new G 89 in 1975 to haul logs with, it was 100 ton rated, had 65 000 pound Volvo hub reduction axles, 120 A engine that was 330 hp which was probably really only equal to around 275 hp in US engines. If you compare them to other brands back then, they definitely were the "Rolls Royce" of trucks, they drove smooth and everything about the truck had a feeling of quality. I was not a fan of the radiator mounted in the cab design though, it made the engine very hard to access the front to work on, and that stupid flex radiator hose was very expensive to replace. Volvo fixed this in the F series and raised the cab a little so there was less engine cover hump and a flatter floor, but still the G series was a damn good truck!
Hi mate thanks for sharing. Yes they had the power but wasn’t like the American stuff like you say. I haven’t heard anything negative about them though apart from the rust
Excellent stuff again Steve. I drove a one of these a couple of times back in the early 80's. Over here in UK we had mainly F88, there may have been a few 'G' around but not many and the 89's were even more rare because we could only get those in left hand drive and not many wanted those.
Love your videos, you really know how to start those All dinosaurs, and I really love the joke about the dog's very funny bring some more 😂😂keep on going my friend
Lovely old things to drive, got to drive a G88 for a bloke for a while, then had my avatar image F88 for a couple of years doing France & Germany from the UK back in the early 1980's

Hey Steve had the yoke nut on the through shaft come undone on one of those old girls before, cocky had one on a 5 in 1 bin, backed it out of a super shed after coincidently going to a farm for a no start and changing the 12/24 solenoid went about 2m and stopped. Looked underneath and the jackshaft was laying in the dirt. Had to undo the flange and split it, get the yoke and nut back on, do it up with the hand tools I had on me and get all back together
Hi Steve gotta love the old Volvos If I had a dollar for every KLM I did in them I'd be rich as. I started in F88s and FB88s then G88s and G89s, F88 290s, N12s and F12s .Great trucks to drive and reliable as well.
All the Rockwell bogies I know of (been around trucks since '59) the thru shaft drives the rear diff and when the pwr div is engaged both diffs drive ; only for bad traction situations and never over 25 mph or on dry pavement . 👍🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺
Lmfao "here to get my nails clipped." 😅😂 quality content with every video. I really want to see a video of converting 24v to 12v. My 65 kenworth lw has a series parallel and I think I want it gone.
Thanks Steve. It’s just a 12 volt starter you will need mate. Then the trigger wire that goes to the parallel switch goes to the starter instead. The batteries are then all hooked up in parallel. Positive to starter, negative to chassis
Haven't heard that joke in 10 years Steve, nice one! Those old Volvos run pretty sweet, drove quite a few B10 buses and a few F10 trucks back when I drove for a living, biggest issues with them was wheel seals and compressor air dryers (used to drain a litre of water out of the wet tanks most days).
I drove a G88 interstate carting general freight for a few years. Loved it. The next favourite was a 110 Freightliner. SAR Kenworth l owned was O.K. but a poor choice with the double brested Yamaha 892. My old R model Mack flintstone was rough as guts but a good bush truck carting logs in Tassy quad box behind a thermadyne. Thanks for the post, brings back memories.
Dam that brought some old memories back. One of the first trucks I got to expeiance was a G88. It had a 12 speed in it. It had a wierd setup been it was a straight 6 speed (no high/low) with splits making 12. I remeber the linkages been worn and it didn't much to miss a gear, pain in arse of a thing. I also remeber having a top speed of 98kph. I believe she is still going to but I haven't spoken to my old trucky mate in many years now.
G’day from Denmark ..if the misses say No to a truckbuy .. just buy a GreatDane with Long nails.😊. what a beauty that Old Volvo is.. runs so smooth 👍 🍺🛠️
Sometimes it’s just a fight and you don’t win. I’d say it was a good call to move it how you are going to because at this point clearing the paddock is priority over driving the Volvo.👍

Had an old lady do a Uturn in front of our Volvo with a full bullbar on the open road hauling an empty B-train. She was in a Fiesta or similar. The truck hit her square on, picked it up, and pushed it down the road about 300m. The car was flated down the left side, and the old lady was helped out, shaken but unharmd. The Volvo had a bent step, a cracked headlight seround, and a dent on the right-hand base leg of the bullbar, so no real damage. The cops that showed up couldn't believe what they saw and told the old lady that if she hadn't been hit by a truck with a full bullbar, It would have just rolled over her.
Steve, Greetings from GA USA, I love your channel for the real world view that you give on these old trucks, Thanks and cheers. PS Why dont you drink Fosters?
Hi Carl thank you mate it’s my pleasure. As for the Fosters, I think it’s just something that people from overseas think we drink here. I have even seen it in any of the bottle shops. The big supermarket sized bottle shops most probably carry it. I tried it one many many years ago. It was okay but certainly better stuff available. You will go a long way to find someone drinking it over here mate
Drove an N10 6 wheeler with a 3 axle trailer bulk unit. Only 300 hp but nice to drive except the overdrive was the weak link on the 12 speed. Needed its nails clipped 🤣
