How Force Thirteen covered Hurricane Dorian | Documentary

- Hurricane Dorian will live long in the collective memory as the storm that defied all expectations. The storm that made one of the strongest landfalls in the Atlantic basin on the first day of September 2019 - tied only with the Labor Day hurricane of 1935 with winds of 185mph at landfall. Dorian then did the unthinkable, and stalled over Grand Bahama, still as a Category 5 hurricane. Two weeks later, the total cost of the storm is still out of focus - the scope of the tragedy on the northernmost islands still stretching the limits of our imagination.
Now, we take a look back together over Force Thirteen's extensive coverage, with commentary and interviews with team members.

I'm thankful to the F13 team for giving me the chance to contribute on this project and Nathan personally for trusting in me to be part of it since August 2015.
As I'm the only person who makes spanish updates of storms I feel I have a huge responsability to fulfll and share the best information I could bring for the people who speak spanish and follow this project too.
I'm pretty sure F13 has saved thousands and thousands of lives around the world, I feel privileged that I'm one of the responsibles of it.
Thank you guys for all the support you brought to this project and for believing in us day by day.
Sincerely, César Gámez.
Thank you so much César for getting that info out to the Spanish community, I'm sure you've saved somebody's life with ur continued updates.
The Best Storm Tracking Channel on TH-cam is bacc and even better after Dorian
You said it all
Your right
100% correct
I wish Force Thirteen could heart that comment.
I subbed to both you and force thirteen.
I live in Abaco and am a survivor of Hurricane Dorian. I think you guys did a great job of covering the wackiest and catastrophic storm ever. Thank you for what you do.
Do more of these when the opportunity arises. For past events too. Very good stuff guys.
Dorian was pretty much the labor day hurricane of 2019

I remember Dorian very well..... I live here in North Eastern Canada, and we sustained a lot of damage, and flooding when it paid us a visit. Still blows my mind that he visited the entire Eastern Seaboard of North America leaving a huge trail of destruction in it's wake. A very dangerous storm for all, but the Bahamas suffered so much worse as it stalled
I'll never forget the 24 hours before landfall. I was out watching the northern lights until 1am or so, and Dorian was still 150mph despite recon's measurements.
Stayed up the rest of the night watching it, and right after sunrise, that's when it took off.
160mph.Then half an hour later, 175. Another hour or so, 180. Another hour, 185.
Recon measurements recorded multiple (over a dozen, i believe) 190mph unflagged SFMR readings on all quadrants in the final 2 hours before Abaco was obliterated.
we had the weather channel on all our TVs, and both Mom and I were just watching Dorian stall and grind over the Bahamas with jaws open.
Farewell Dorian, your legends will never die in storm histories, we will never forget your historical moment! 😭
Dorian had the most impressive ERCs I have ever seen. They occurred with such speed and efficiency that I've never seen in any storm, to a degree where the intensity wasn't even affected by them.
A Very Wise Wolfy She was truly unique and unprecedented in recent memory.

Personally I could have been affected by this storm after Irma... thank goodness it didn’t but the Bahamas did get the eye for like 20+ hours which was tragic
i think it was much longer than 20 hours
That’s why I said +20
I got ts winds in Florida from Dorian but ik I watched the news for 10 hours and it barely moved it's just sad that the Bahamas went through that
Congratulations for the f13 crew for keeping us updated about Dorian. Hope the Bahamas recover soon.
Force 13 is the best storm tracker in the world
Hurricane channel 12342 Agreed!
They have estimates that the NHC sometimes have difficulty finding
i sheaded a tear when watching this
It’s enough to make a man cry and that’s ok
Remember when strat did a ban wave of people saying it would be a 5? Lol
really?
Yay. You got it out nice job Nathan can’t wait.
Rest in Peace to those who have died. Stay strong Bahamas, North Carolina, and Nova Scotia.
I remember tracking that monster, that storm kept defying forecasters.

Same
Same, 2019 was my favorite season, has nothing on 2021 and 2020 with no Cat 5's
I grew up in Hope Town (Elbow Cay, Abaco Bahamas) - the first landfall of Hurricane Dorian. My father, my brother, my nephews and too many friends lost their homes/businesses.... this was a monster storm but they survived. Your reporting and analysis is fascinating. Thank you for this recap of the storm.

the ending song made me tear up...
There are a few weather events I will never forget your coverage of, the Easter Sunday Bassfield-Soso-Seminary-Collins Tornado emergencies are one of them. However Dorian is the top of that list.
This was one of the craziest hurricanes I've ever seen .... And I've been watching hurricane seasons since about 2004. It was one jaw dropping storm
Chance of cat 5: 1%
Dorian: im gonna do whats called a pro gamer move
Dorian "Hold my Pina colada I'll show them!"
Heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time.
You guys did an incredible job tracking Dorian, it was certainly some of your best coverage for a Storm that will take a long time to match. It was definitely the storm of the century and will go down in history as the biggest bullet Florida ever dodged. However the Bahamas took the full impact and I don’t think those Islands and the people who live there will ever be the same again.
After Dorian died I did not want to see any hurricanes
Barry and Dorian was good enough for A year
You are right, no hurricane afterwards make landfall
Barry is enough
As soon as the center relocated I got a really bad feeling this could become a category 4 or 5.
I played in the rain of this hurricane (i was 8). Looking back at it now, I played in a monster (I wasn’t in the eye wall I was at Orlando)
"1% of cat 5"
Unluckily lucky.
Hurricane Dorian subverted expectations even more than SW: The Last Jedi.
16:07 A tropical storm, but a hurricane
I remember the time when people were saying, "this disturbance off the east coast of the U.S. has the chance to form, and would be named Dorian.
The *really, really* first eye of Dorian on satellite is zoomed in 14:50.
Good job covering this monster behemoth of a storm.
I didn't know that Hurricane Dorian would be a category 5 with 185mph and it freaked me out I wasn't expecting it at all😱
Once Dorian reorganized the center 150 miles north it was a game changer as then it would miss the islands.
Amazing, absolutely amazing!
Can't wait!
This storm was Extreme on my Hurricane Destruction Scale (HDS)
But really it is
This makes me so sad. I was there a few weeks before, such a beautiful place. Forecasting has become almost a free-for-fall. But these guys knew. Didn’t want to think they were more correct than the NHC. Unbelievable. I felt lucky as i am near Ft Lauderdale, but the people of the Abacos I still weep for to this day. Great place, great people. Still recovering. Amazing job, but very very hard to watch.
My family was there. I visited in February of 2020 and the damage was unbelievable, pretty much every tree was uprooted, fully destroyed, or snapped in half! There were also boats on land! It was unbelievable. There was much more damage that I just can’t explain.
37:38 Those Islands Are Getting Completely Trashed at this time

When the National Hurricane Center said Dorian only had a wind speed of 150 mph, I was quite confused because other sources said it had a wind speed of 160 even 170 mph!

I live in Prince Edward Island; a neighbouring province of Nova Scotia, and Dorian caused extensive damage, much more than I have ever seen previous, right across the province.
Hurricane Colin /SPCAshburn925 sorry for the late reply! Dorian was most definitely the more destructive storm here in Prince Edward Island! Many millions of dollars in damage, that being structural and coastal damage, was done here, not to mention the tree damage sustained right across the province. It was a night I will never forget, and I hope we do not see a storm like that in our region for a long time.

How about a 2020 hurricane season documentary about how you guys covered it
1 year ago today
Hey F13 can you make a hurricane documentary on how F13 covered the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane season and the west Pacific Typhoon season?
I had a blast going through hurricanes in 04-05 Florida. 19 years old nothing to loose except my car. I had to move my car to the most widist-open spot I could find and ride out the storms in my car. I didn't want a tree falling on it after putting good money into my stereo system.
Dorian Was a monster
Peak of Dorian
Sustained Winds: 175 kts (190 mph)
Gusts: 195 kts (220 mph)

No
Your analysis is HIGHLY flawed
I agree with it.
Dorian was.. weird.. to say the least

Also, didn't Dorian reach 195 MPH max? I remember it doing so.
No,it never did.
It did on recon, but not officially
@@averyshaham1697 well recon is up in the air where winds are stronger.
Strat here. It definitely did not reach 195mph. 185 is certain and if tons of string s are pulled there’s a very small argument that can’t be fully proven for 190 but definitely not 195
TropicalStorm4213 even up to 205 could be argued. It is not a situation of definitely not, it is just how much do you trust the SMFR readings?
No one can predict that Dorian became a monster storm
Force 13 do you think that Mariá was a Category 5 at Landfall in Puerto Rico
its debatable since it was very close with only a 5mph differnce but it likely was CAT4 at landfall due to it being in a eyewall replacement cycle at the same time it was landfalling
If Dorian went just about 100 or so miles further west it would planted it's southern eyewall over my house for 24 hours. We really dodged a category 5 bullet there.
so did i. i already dodged matthew while it was weakening but it almost slammed me head on with its western eyewall. Dorian was the same case
It wasnt a bullet
It was a Meteor
Yeah, just imagine that. That would probably bring this nation to its knees, especially if it happened in this climate of politics.
