    Dis 'n' dat
    1) "The pope is never ill until he is dead." -- Vatican saying
    I hope and pray for Pope Francis returns to good health soon. During the last years of John Paul II, John Paul seemed to be propped up by aides and was said to sign anything put before him. While I am no fan for Benedict XVI, Benedict abdicated with his dignity intact,
    2) The laity participating in a conclave? We should all live so long!
    I wish Catholics in the pews could hire and fire their pastors and bishops.
    Questions: when was the number of papal electors limited to 120 cardinals? when was the age of 80 set for maximum age for cardinal-electors? Just wonderin'
    3) If Argentina has had ten presidents in less than 40 years, I would recommend that the new president not to unpack his suitcases

      On point number one I agree with you 100%. I too have never been a fan of Ratzinger, but he won my respect during his pontificate and especially by abdicating and setting a precedent that is relevant for our age. I once saw John Paul II coming out of the back entrance of the Vatican in a car, on his way to the Stations of the Cross in the Colisseum during Holy Week. He was not only propped up by aides, but it seemed as if he was no longer aware of where he was or even who he was. On point nr 2 I wish I could answer - I have written about Cardinal Decio Azzolino (1623-89) and the conclaves of the 17th century (Church Politics in 17th century Rome, published 2000 by Stockholm University Press) but at that time the number of the College of Cardinals was limited to 70. The maximum age for voting is a modern innovation and, given the longevity of the present century, a good one. Not everyone is as sharp in their 80's as they were earlier in life .

    Every pope in modern times except John Paul I has done some changes to the conclave rules in one way or another. It's not a big deal. Paul VI was reportedly thinking about including lay people, but ultimately decided not to. I don't think Francis will devaluate the role of the cardinalate because it isn't in the interest of the church to do so - he has publicly admitted that he doesn't feel comfortable with the traditional "regal" side of the papacy, but acknowledged that this is one of the things that he just can't change. The same can probably be said about the cardinals role in the conclave.

    • @Jimboken1
      @Jimboken1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Au contraire. JP ll made the big change and the liberal modernists ignored the rules. There's supposed to be no electioneering. There is. The Holy Spirit be damned.

    If he includes laity that are true Catholics who believe everything that the church teaches and they practice everything that the church teaches on a daily basis then I'll get behind that. But I doubt that would be what would happen probably the laity that would be involved would be liberal non-catholic laity.

    An unusual show this week - I like that although not for the reason per se.
    There's a bit of me, John, that would tend to advise not saying a word. It's something which worked for Her Late Majesty for seven decades and she was one of the most admired people on the planet...... You handled it consummately and a nice chivalrous touch requesting Boris apologise to Elise - if that, however, transpires not to be forthcoming, I would literally forget it and move right on. After all, if the Pope can get over being called an imbecile and a son of a bitch, I feel you both have the werewithal to weather what amounts to who kissed who and when - effectively scurrilous playground chatter. You've acknowledged it all, you stayed fair about both CM and Voris (despite both entities being absolutely vile!) and that's that.... let's hope you're back on form next week😂❤
