The Family was basically him, with just Eric Leeds saxophone added, his voice replaced with Paul Peterson's and added vocals by Susannah plus Clare Fischer's string arrangements. Everything else is him, song writing, performing & producing included. I guess he got most of the royalties as well.

This is really no different with Prince, although it's viewed that way because of the secrecy that usually isn't there around it.

Here's the thing: if your bound (pun intended) by a contract, then you are bound to the terms of the entity that issued it. WB wouldn't let Prince release a whole bunch of music at once. I do wish he pulled earlier in his career, what he pulled later: released The Gold Experience at the same time he released EXODUS-released Exodus independently through his own label NPG Records.
Wow! Only knew the version by the family which was all Prince anyway. If you listen to the words of the songs he gave away to others, it still has his inimitable style and poetry all over it.
If memory serves me correctly, this was the first released work with one of the greatest musical minds of all time, Douglas Clare Fischer. His ethereal strings make this track even more amazing.

Wow. Never knew this existed. So when Prince would allow someone to record one of his songs, they were getting a fully-formed product with even the bits of vocalizing already in place. He had a completed song ready for the radio (because his version tops The Family, IMHO) and instead had someone else record and release it. And everyone who ever worked with him has talked about how he worked around the clock putting out these songs, things that went into his vault without ever seeing the light of day. I wonder if his productivity ever overwhelmed him - so much music trying to find its way out of his head...
I remember arguing with someone in the 5th grade that Prince was the original singer and writer of the song. I remembered him singing it and when that group came out who were under him did it and it got radio play I kept saying it. I was right

Here's the thing: if your bound (pun intended) by a contract, then you are bound to the terms of the entity that issued it. WB wouldn't let Prince release a whole bunch of music at once. I do wish he pulled earlier in his career, what he pulled later: released The Gold Experience at the same time he released EXODUS-released Exodus independently through his own label NPG Records.

Wow! Only knew the version by the family which was all Prince anyway. If you listen to the words of the songs he gave away to others, it still has his inimitable style and poetry all over it.

If memory serves me correctly, this was the first released work with one of the greatest musical minds of all time, Douglas Clare Fischer. His ethereal strings make this track even more amazing.

This is one of the Gem of all Gems right here!!! I’ve always wondered if a version existed of Prince singing this and my curiosity was raised after the release of “Originals”. I found the answer and it’s AMAZING!!! He should’ve kept it and put it on “Around The World in A Day”. More proof that Prince was & is still truly THE MAN!!!!

Wow. Never knew this existed. So when Prince would allow someone to record one of his songs, they were getting a fully-formed product with even the bits of vocalizing already in place. He had a completed song ready for the radio (because his version tops The Family, IMHO) and instead had someone else record and release it. And everyone who ever worked with him has talked about how he worked around the clock putting out these songs, things that went into his vault without ever seeing the light of day. I wonder if his productivity ever overwhelmed him - so much music trying to find its way out of his head...

I remember arguing with someone in the 5th grade that Prince was the original singer and writer of the song. I remembered him singing it and when that group came out who were under him did it and it got radio play I kept saying it. I was right

Good audio quality 👌 better than the one I have. The version I have sounds different tho*.... This track should have made it on Original's - given most of us have already heard most of the tracks. I think this is a good example of how unfit the estate handlers are. What would have been fun is if they had a disc of Prince's original and another disc with the version of who ended up singing it. -- at least we will get a higher quality audio. I will get the new CD just for that.

I disagree with the handlers being unfit. The quintessential example of that is the handling of Michael Jackson's Legacy. SHAMEFUL!!!
