I'm a grown-ass man.....why do I cry whenever I hear this version? My whole life has revolved around Prince. But this is him stripped down to his finest... raw talent.

Listening to this you hear the difference between Prince and EVERYONE else. People don't understand that HE did it ALL! He was his own musical director, show producer, composer, etc. Maybe one day the scope of his genius will be understood and appreciated.
Some much will never be, the show in 84, purple rain last song , he hit a pitch so high with the guitar we could not here it that's why he cried, and the fans were great and he gave them is something humanity you will never get to not hear, this genius will go unrecognized for 60 years.
Thing is, the guy wás noticed in all his glory by many during his lifetime and even more now. Every true musician knew and knows his craftmanship, his genius and all that. His fans knew too and more people are getting to know about it today. The people who always say how underrated he was make me chuckle most of the times...the guy was hardly ever underrated, maybe only when opening for the Stones way back when, but I can't think of any other moment when true music fans didn't recognise his power, talent or whatever you want to call it. If you're into popmusic (and in this case not only popmusic) you know he's up there with the best , and in my opinion and in the opinion of so many others he's probably the best of ' em all and most probably will always be.
Prince was from another universe. We got gifted to witness his presence. God only knows how to do what he did. We very truly blessed to have lived in the time of Prince's reign. Nothing compares to you Prince!
I have never heard Prince sing this only heard the Family version, but this is amazing hearing him rehearse and direct it. This is what it must have been like to witness Mozart in his time, Prince was our Mozart!
I can't say I've heard the Family sing this, and this is my first time hearing it. With older songs, if it's not on the oldies stations, i don't get to hear it. i have great inspiration by people in the comments referring people to other versions, covers and such.

Nevard Tellalian he's talking about the filter effect on the bass ... the softer you play the strings the more the effect comes out. It's an envelope filter effect that brownmark is using.

ahh you're so very right Kathryn. in truth, prince was a musician who ....over, and over put to use very simple ;musical precepts...eg. chord changes, structure and coordinating scales in certain genres, etc. his GENIUS lies in the way he puts these known forms together ! For the casual PRINCE fans. PRINCE would do a sound check for 2 hours. PRINCE would come back and do the actual show for 2 more hours. After the show. PRINCE would find a club and play another two hours to wee hours in the morning. They don't come around often people. I heard about it in the middle of the day at work and had to take some time to stop and reflect.... And mourn.... We always assumed that we would have the chance to meet him and share how he has inspired us, but that was never to happen and that was the sad part. --My mom--who was a BIG Prince fan--died 7 months later--and that was the even bigger blow that brought the Prince reality home.....

Friday, January 6, 2017 driving home from work. Suddenly, I begin to sob. Prince died....I still can't process it...so I have been ignoring it. But it caught up with me. Life goes on but I am a broken soul.
Strange how it does that, out of nowhere I breakdown thinking of this beautiful soul , how I miss him😔🙏🏼as if I've lost a personal special friend, someone Ive had no closure with; the unbelievable aching in my spirit ...the only solice is the knowledge my Beautiful One has been elevated to those golden gates no longer lonely, no longer in pain-finally with his son , Ahmir🙏🏼💜; there they'll wait for the remaining part of their "family" 🕊🕊🕊🙏🏼💜♊️♏️🕉

I love hearing prince direct his band I’m 11 it’s 2024 and I love the 80s I am inspired by Prince and Michael Jackson they are both legends and I am a musician when I grow up I want to bring 80s music back those two inspired me to do that
You're lucky that you get to enjoy it for the 1st time :) Look up old rolling stone magazines from the 80'and towards the back they will list the top 10 singles and 10 albums for that month and you'll find a lot of great stuff.

Listening to Prince giving direction to his band always leaves me in awe. He was so masterful at his craft and at such a young age. A brilliant composer, arranger, lyricist, and band leader, he was also the sexiest man to ever live. How I miss you Prince Rogers Nelson and how I look forward to sharing with you how deeply I love you when I finally see you in heaven. For the casual PRINCE fans. PRINCE would do a sound check for 2 hours. PRINCE would come back and do the actual show for 2 more hours. After the show. PRINCE would find a club and play another two hours to wee hours in the morning. They don't come around often people. Thank God 🙏 you and I were alive to see the greatest musical superstar and performer to ever Walk the planet 🌍. #PRINCE4EVER

I heard about it in the middle of the day at work and had to take some time to stop and reflect.... And mourn.... We always assumed that we would have the chance to meet him and share how he has inspired us, but that was never to happen and that was the sad part. --My mom--who was a BIG Prince fan--died 7 months later--and that was the even bigger blow that brought the Prince reality home.....

They talk about Bach & Joni Mitchell & Brian Wilson and .....well, they talk. But Prince.....he walked the walk. He talked the talk. He brought us the Most Beautiful Girl in the World. He told us Let's Go Crazy. He let us know a Dirty Mind was not a Controversy. He took all that to the top of the charts and even when the charts turned its back, my Lord did that man turn out some of the best music of his life. Prince4Ever.

I started out in life as a piece of clay and was sculpted into the person I am through years of experience, changes, people, friends, parents, siblings, MUSIC, and growing up in Detroit in the 50's, 60's and 70's my environment.
Prince was a part of the mold that created the sculpture of who I became.
Now I feel as if the "I" has been chipped away. A sledge hammer has busted a piece from the sculpture of me--broken.
Prince leaving this place on Earth has taken a part of me with him.

Perfectly described. I had the fortune of discovering Prince on his first album For You, so I had his music in my ear for 38 years of my 49. Definitely shaped me. I can't imagine what my mindset would be like if I never experienced the artistry of Prince.
