      @shu2mchw Thanks kindly. Was happy to help in my small way (& hopefully he goes for free treatment at the local Govt hospital...) When I first came to Hua Hin as a young guy 20 years ago (still young btw;) you'd see dozens of these rickshaws/samlors all round town ferrying tourists about. The then Sofitel /Railway Hotel would book them ALL for a 4pm ride thru town and it was lovely to see them all in a convoy of sorts, tooting horns & smiling along with their happy passengers. They've faded out over the years as have the usually older guys who pedalled them. This chap thus represents the end of an era and it's doubly sad to see him pedalling with one leg and his beloved Samlor also in dire need of repair. If I were still living in Hua Hin I might've taken on both the gent and his Samlor as a package rehab project (see to it fix leg, fix Samlor, get him setup on a booking app + give him an entry level smart phone, teach him to use it). Unfortunately I had to catch a train back to Bangkok and well had to go. BTW, collectors love those old Samlors and they're worth 20K baht & up in almost any condition. I'm sure he's aware of this but hopefully he and his ride both get better and together continue to put rice on the table. No 'helicopter cash' or printing presses hereabouts and very tough times for many Thai people currently. Hopefully better days ahead.

      SideTripLife very thoughtful of you to think of other ways to help. Usually people just give a donation and walk away. It is not easy riding those samlors in the heat either not to mention with one leg.I do admire the Thais for their resilience and dedication to keep going. Much respect to them! Hope he gets better soon and better days ahead for everyone!

    Lovely area this, must go for a drive around there and stay at that resort maybe.
    Noticed the dual pricing (park entrance), that's always awkward for me as Thai family nearly always pay mine. They usually joke a little and I do likewise when I ferry them all around the Cotswolds 😁 and expensive UK attractions. I think Thailand should do it in more of a stealth tax way. Then again, it's rare I come across it in the last few years.
    Thanks for the tour (and tips)

    • @SideTripLife
      @SideTripLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Luke Justice It really is lovely Luke. As for dual pricing, someone in the chat said 'Grrrr' and I get that. However, at least more Thai kids can have access to their own parks at the lower tier pricing and that's a good thing. Also, this park is extremely well maintained so well worth the approx $6 USD, 5.5 EUR, 5 GBP (a pittance really). So on relative 'sum' an absolute bargain all round and great day out. Meanwhile, hope you and all waiting to get back can & sooner than later. Cheers!

      @@SideTripLife @SideTripLife agreed, it's a pittance for a well kept park. I've much the same feeling "grrrr" really. I just know I'm the extra expensive burden travelling with other "South East Asian looking" relatives. • @SideTripLife
      @SideTripLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @ill-freaky-na-na To be honest, I feel a bit guilty posting up these travel vids from Thailand knowing many viewing want to visit but can't get here (must be so frustrating, sorry guys).
      Personally, I still believe Thailand will try to avoid forfeiting the season if at all possible. Likely STILL starting with limited groups from areas within Asian countries deemed 'under control', funneled to Thai destinations deemed 'controllable' (such as Phuket, Samui etc). Travellers will likely have to pass a health test prior to and after arrival. Unlikely they'll be required to 'quarantine in place' (ie: hotel for 14 days) as the destination point itself would be the quarantine area so to speak. This is why Phuket/Samui etc are being looked at, easier to monitor and control in confined areas/islands etc. After 14 days, travellers can then go elsewhere in Thailand -following another exit health test (at least this is what's being discussed, have to wait n see details). Then, 'IF' all goes well, slowly expand the scope of both the origin country & the destinations within Thailand - again, subject to monitoring & also of one's own countries situation.
      There's still a few months before say Oct-Dec, thus time for one's local health situation to improve too. Of course much could occur either way before then but certainly hope things improve all round. Meanwhile, for those looking in but can't get in, hope you can & sooner rather than later.

      @Andreas mrap Short story - My Father was running a cable project in Medan some 20 years ago & his tales prompted me to visit Asia for the 1st time. I've visited Lake Toba in Sumatra with my Father & to this day it remains one of my fav places in the world! I haven't been to nearby Bukit Lawang but my Father also raves about it. I was in Myanmar when the 'thing' that afflicts us now really broke out and had planned a return trip to Indonesia next. So, as soon as travel restrictions are lifted I plan to visit Sumatra again & for sure Bukit lawang this time. You are so fortunate to visit there, I cannot wait to do so also!

      @WadmanP Have set foot on nearby Monkey Island before (really were monkeys there too;) but have not been to the others. If going, can perhaps just ask the boat operators directly at the beach too.

      @@SideTripLife Considering what's happening in Vietnam right now, and most Thais saying no international arrivals, I doubt they will open up to westerners (tourists) in 2020. It's not even looking all that good for Asian arrivals, but time will tell. One thing I think is certain...Thailand is going to test the waters with Asian neighbors before opening up to other regions of the world. It is possible they will open up to those willing to quarantine for the first 2 weeks of their long stay, but that greatly limits the number of takers.

      @@SideTripLife I think that is overly optimistic, considering what is happening in Vietnam. The surge has spread to six cities and provinces in six days, including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and the Central Highlands. Latest reports say 47 new cases. This is going to scare the hell out of Thai authorities, as Vietnam has not opened to tourists and has no idea how this happened.
      Even if Thailand does go forward with allowing International tourists in, there are some real problems with testing on arrival. The potential for testing to overwhelm airport operations aside, all it takes is for one passenger to test positive and it will kill future arrivals. If a passenger tests positive all passengers on that flight will have to be quarantined, at their own expense. Once that gets out, future tourists won't want to risk it happening to them. In addition, airlines are already refusing to fly into a country where their crews will be tested, even if its just a stopover. They can't risk having their crews grounded (quarantined) as it will completely upset their flight operations.
      What it comes down to is Thailand is damned if they do and damned if they don't. I believe they will decide to ride it out and take the economic hit. I suspect those willing to do 14 days quarantine, in return for a long stay, are the only tourists that stand a chance of getting in this year and probably well into 2021. This assumes Thailand does not suffer the same setback Vietnam is going through right now.

It has no similar obligation towards foreigners. In Sanskrit "Athithi Devo Bhava" translates to "Treat a guest like he is divine". It also means that the guest is not one of us, so he needs to be treated differently.

      200 baht is not a lot and it is a national park. That being said some of these parks are just 1 small area and sometimes are just 1 view point or similar. Perhaps a park pass system where you pay more but get more access to different parks would be better. Private operators charging foreigners more won't get my Baht. For Example would you be ok with the Dolphin Bay Resort charing you more because you are a foreigner, I doubt it.
