I know it's a bold thing to say but I feel like she didn't know how good she was until she came second on the 1500. She's absolutely carrying rn
The Olympic 1500 final will likely be run much more tactically, and Jessica Hull will not have the quickest closing speed in the race. But we now know she has the strength to possibly steal the race if she goes out fast in order to split the pack and dissipate some closing speed from others. Better if she could get someone else to lead a fast first lap and a half at least, but that won’t happen. We know she can run multiple 64s by herself with no problem, but the average lap speed will have to be much faster than that to win the 1500. More like 61s, and any lap that is slower means the final lap is faster. It will be interesting to see what she does, but I think she will have to get to the front by lap 2 and make the field respond to a world record pace. That is a Steve Prefontaine strategy: make them bleed if they want to beat you! I hope the cameras show Jessica’s face close up while she runs. She is ALWAYS smiling! What a wonderful runner to watch!😊
@@HQBergeron HQ brilliant, my thoughts exactly. That said, in recent years the likes of fellow Aussie Stewy McSweyn was one of the first to change this and made them bleed. That’s 500 more meters that need to be run. 33% more distance is substantial at that speed, so it makes sense that there is a difference of a couple seconds per lap
@@benanastasoff8980 when you put it that way, 33% does sound like quite a lot more! Given Hull’s quick last lap though I think she can give a little more the first 4. The women’s 3k world record is 8:06.11 which is 64.82 per lap. If the 1500 is 61.08 and the 3k is 64.82 then you could expect a 2k to be 62.32. Not exactly how running works but still
@@Jake_Ritter I agree that she or Kipyegon can probably go slightly faster. Jessica Hull’s massive improvement in recent times (more than 5 seconds over 1500M to fifth fastest ever) has been quite astonishing, given she’s competing at the absolute elite level in her main event. Her father/coach must have discovered a truly optimal method of training/recovery for her specific body structure/design. Having a father as a coach must be a huge advantage for some fortunate athletes - if judged by Ingebrigtsen’s and Coe’s performances, two of the greatest middle distance runners of all time. It’s a shame Kipyegon and some of the other current greatest 1500M runners weren’t in this race. The time would have been 3 to 4 seconds faster. The sport doesn’t benefit from the world’s best athletes not bothering to turn up for Diamond League meetings, the supposed pinnacle of world athletics (outside of the Olympics and world championships).
The pay structure for world records in a Diamond League meet encourages athletes to break world records very incrementally since they get a minimum of $50,000 instead of the normal $10,000 for a non-record-breaking win. The more times they can break a record, the more $50,000 payouts they can receive, plus they receive more points towards receiving a Diamond Trophy and it’s prize money at the end of the season. Athletes do what is best for themselves and have to consider the other options they have as well as their physical condition at the time, not to mention pointing towards special meets like the Olympics which may allow them huge endorsement fees if they can win gold there.
