i guess i am in a cinderella predicament with very abusive parents and i am 15 so i can't do anything but really i don't like that message because my kindness has only been rewarded with punches and hurt, and be careful to leave a brusise on her face because people will ask questions (something my parents say) , i find it hard to stay positive and not murder them. maybe being rewarded with happiness isn't for everyone who stays kind, maybe its only for a specific kind of people and maybe cinderella would have been with me if she wasn't married into royalty

She's been abused and basically enslaved since like, 7 years old
She's probably been gaslit to hell, like, her stepmother would say nice sounding but backhanded and manipulative things literally all throughout the movie
And the very idea that she just sits and waits for rescue?!
She frickin, yelled and shouted and banged on the door and did her best to get out of that room when she was locked in, how is that sitting and waiting? She's not at all passive, she's an abuse victim who probably hasn't left her house considering she's constantly doing work and as far as we know had no outside contacts

Actually, if you really look at Katniss her lack of situational control was very much like Cinderella's. She aimed mostly for small personal victories with low expectations and kept her head down. Which goes to show that even physically strong and stoic leads can end up in a situation they're nearly powerless to get out of without the right combination of circumstances.

    • @Trollestiatumblur
      @Trollestiatumblur 3 ปีที่แล้ว +59

@@BonaparteBardithion That isn’t the point. The fact that now a days you have to be masculine in order to be seen as strong is misogynistic and toxic. Nobody said there was anything wrong with Katniss, it’s that fact that if a female protagonist isn’t like her then everyone is outraged. Katniss is masculine, Cinderella is feminine. They both have their strengths and weaknesses but one is praised while the other is ridiculed. That is the point they were making.

I remember someone debating in another discussion that maybe the stepmother did a smear campaign on Cinderella with the people of the village, making it hard for her to seek outside help or get a job. In the sequels, we see Cinderella has a good relationship with the villagers, meaning that either that may not have happened or it did but Cinderella becoming a caring princess squashed whatever the stepfamily had said about her.
In any case, I think Cinderella stayed because she wanted to make sure her animal friends were ok.

She could threaten to throw Cinderella out as a means to keep her n line.
And overtime she comes to believes it. She stays because she’s been conditioned. She actually has it good with a bed to sleep on, (which look at most other versions where she sleeps on a straw mat in front of the fireplace) she clearly is getting food. Why take the risk out on the streets?

    • @tatltails3923
      @tatltails3923 3 ปีที่แล้ว +151

To be fair, she didn't really do any more 'giving up' than the 50's Cinderella. She just took a different route. In the 50's movie she was largely unaware of the consequences of her meeting with the Prince until she got locked in the room. Then the switch flipped and she realized Tremaine was going to pull some nasty shit if she couldn't get out in time to stop her. In the REMAKE, however, she gets confronted by Tremaine a whole-ass day before the prince shows up, and Tremaine tries to convince her to marry the prince so she can shadow-rule the kingdom with both of them under her thumb. At this point Cinderella knows exactly what Tremaine wants, and she knows that they both know Cinderella is necessary to get that. So she purposefully removes herself from the equation. She breaks the shoe, and makes sure Tremaine knows that her plan will never succeed, even if it means Cindy never obtains her own happiness either. That's her big act of defiance, on the same level as 50's Cindy trying on the shoe. Yeah it seems more passive because the moment of climax is moved and the Iconic Moment is no longer the most important story beat of the climax, but Remake Cindy literally prevents her kingdom from falling to a fucking dictator and ensures her true love's safety and freedom. It's not an inherently bad thing that she considers that enough to leave her at peace, even if her mice friends disagree and she does end up even happier for it.

@Hannah Papernick-Yudin I think 2015 Cinderella was implied to go a similar route to Ever After Cinderella in regards to when and why she left: she didn't want to leave her childhood home in the hands of people who would utterly destroy it if she left them unchecked. I don't remember off the top of my head the state the stepfamily were left in after Cindy marries the prince, but when you have the literal leader of the country on your side you can put some measures in place to preserve your childhood home against vengeful destruction whether you continue living there or not.

The shoe is made of glass, which unlike most shoes isn't flexible like most shoes would have been back then. So someone in the kingdom could have the same shoe size, but it's a slim or even impossible chance someone out there has the same foot structure as Cinderella. That shoe was made to match her foot specifically, and it also represents her imaginative dreaming as it is a beautiful shoe made of something that's so gone from reality like glass.

@@Theravingranter Points made! People also don't tend to look further into the details: Snow White NEVER accepted the apple out of willingness. The Queen literally placed it ON HER HAND and continuously insisted her to bite it. Of course she wouldn't return it because it would be disrespectful of her to not accept an offer that is already being given to her for free. Also, as I mentioned, she was being continuously insisted to bite it, so she couldn't really return it anymore. And knowing Snow White's nature, she wouldn't be the type of person to disrespect or disappoint the elderly. And considering the time period this was made, women like her weren't taught to critically think, but instead were taught to be nice to everyone. And also, connecting it to her being 14, she was just a minor who can easily be a target of people with suspicious motives! The problem with the situation here is that instead of people getting mad at the Queen for wanting to kill an innocent teenager, they're mad at Snow White for being the victim of deceit and manipulation. 🙄
Lastly, the only reason why she let the Queen in the cottage was because her BIRD friends attacked the Queen! And again, knowing Snow White's nature, she would be the type of person who would help out someone in need, and she shouldn't be blamed for that because other people would do the same!

There is a big misconception on what represents strength in a Disney princess. Cinderella is one of those characters that is stronger than people think because she has to endure domestic abuse, isolation from the world outside this chateau, all with seemingly no way out, so she makes the most of her situation by helping out the animals that live up the stairs and giving them all the comfort of the world. Putting on a smile in the face of complete misery is not easy to do, especially for as long as Cinderella had to. Even so, she still had her limits, and you could still see how the situation affected her. From a mental and emotional point of view, she is as strong as Hercules!
This misconception about strength carries over to the 2015 movie, which was likely written by one of Lady Tremaine's descendants with how the character was ruined. That film is so trash I may need to script a video of my own on it XD

I disagree, I loved the 2015 remake and thought it was the best of the remakes. They kept the kind character of Cinderella through and through.
And if you want to argue about the last moments, I intend that she did save her self because she was kind to her nice friends and they saved her. Also, she didn’t know the grand duke was there, she thought it was someone else.
The movie was beautiful and well acted and personally I thought did the original Justice. And sometimes there is nothing wrong with not being able to save yourself, especially in a situation like Ella’s.

I love the idea that Cinderella's hope manifested the fairygodmother. We might even go a step further and say she's manifested magic itself. We don't see any evidence of magic unrelated to Cinderella, but here she is, talking with animals. She treats them as friends, but also as humans, and they develop human habits and reasoning as well. "A dream is a wish your heart makes" takes on a whole new context if you consider she is literally wishing magic into existence.

Most people, in Cinderella’s position, would opt to run away and be homeless and starve, basically slow suicide, rather than be emotionally abused and enslaved. Some people, like me, would stay of course, but like, evil stepmother and stepsisters somehow mysteriously got food poisoning and drop dead after eating dinner. 😈😈😈

Or should she thought that I still call her that. My abuser never cares about what I wanted and all but at the same time, good thing I learned of what her actions made me like this. I was isolated at home, just like Cinderella and Rapunzel. She never forgive me of what she'd done to me, leaving me don't know how to apologize to people. I'm actually planning to leave once I'm out of high school, probably like going to Japan to resume my college. And that includes with my guy friends who cares a lot about me. And both seemed better than my life, but I wanted to try to wait till I had a better opportunity... then my boyfriends mother looked at me a 21 year old that weighed 93 pounds, and was pretty much stuck as a kid because they wouldn’t let me grow out of their ideal. I wasn’t allowed to even try to become what the world requires people to be.

Cinderella 3 is god tier, I love everything about it. You got Prince Charming voiced by 90s Spiderman and Cinderella voiced by 90s Black Cat and Fem Shep, it only gets better from there. They address and mock the simplistic stuff of the original like the glass slipper hunt. That face Prince Charming makes when he sees Anastasia with the slipper is meme worthy, from pure happiness to extreme disappointment in less then 3 seconds. The fact that Cinderella saves herself from the evil Pumpkin Carriage, granted with help from the mice, then protects Anastasia from the now godlike Lady Tremaine made her my favorite of the classic Disney Princesses. Give her a Keyblade and she would be a great party member in Kingdom Hearts, hell I wouldn't mind playing the plot of Cinderella 3 in KH, imagine having a boss fight with Lady Tremaine wielding the wand with Cinderella and Prince Charming as party members. I would give them all my money for that.

Let me point out to you why Cinderella is AWESOME:
We started the story with the dead father and mother, the stepmother and the daughters (we stand anatasia, she changes - watch the sequels), and the poor Cinderella as a servant.
    Now think with me, dear.
HOW, IN-THE-WORLD Cinderella could be called weak and powerless? Do you think the PRINCE saved her? Let me see...
Throughout the film we see Cinderella working tirelessly, enduring those girls' pests and the frightening stepmother WHILE they abuse her mercilessly. And in all areas: physical, emotional and psychological.
"No matter how your heart is grieving
    If you keep on believing
The dream that you wish will come true"
(She not only believes, she works for it, btw)
And yet she remains strong, honoring her parents' memories and taking care of what they left behind. And she is also friendly with the animals that lived there (this is very important).
Cinderella continued to be patient and to act with kindness in every step she took. They receive the invitation from the ball, and PREVENT her from going, on top of that. And they make a lot of lame excuses.
Cinderella then performs the whole world of tasks that they gave her and even arranges the dress for the ball. And then, we came across one of the most difficult scenes to watch in the entire Disney universe. The stepmother and the sisters tear the dress to pieces >>> while Cinderella was wearing it

She never wanted or cared about a prince, even when the ball was brought up; she's actually got personality and has a sense of humor; there was nothing else that she could have done other than stay at the house; and the fairy godmother was hardly 'luck'... and even if it was, Ariel got Ursula, Aladdin got the Genie, Rapunzel got a magic flower, none of those guys would have had their stories if not for the luck of magic either, so why are we pinning it on Cinderella?

She's definately not weak. She's kind, hopeful, hard-working, loves her father and animal friends, and I think won't leave until she can find a way of creating a better life for not only herself but her animal friends who she loves like family. She also does stand up for herself, she just needs support because her stepfamily don't play fair. Unfortunately not all bullies respond well to being spoken up to.
I love that she also forgives and has a better relationship with her stepsister, Anastasia. That would require an incredible amount of strength and empathy, and I suppose it doesn't hurt that Cinderella was at that stage a princess in a loving relationship and wanted others to be happy too :)
I definately don't think Cinderella was a gold digger. I think it didn't hurt to find a man with money because it could help her out and the people relying on her, but her scenes with the prince are clearly genuinely romantic and her song 'Dream is a Wish your heart makes' is very romantic in tone. Cinderella knows what unhealthy relationships are but remembers how kind her father was and probably hoped to meet a man similar in nature to him that loved her equally as much :)

I know these options are still not easy( especially with a kid/kids) for some one but it still can help open doors for some one who want to give themselves/ their family a better life. We are judging Cinderella though modern eyes, we have to see which options she had in HER time period, not ours.

As a child I loved Cinderella so much, as I grew up with more "feminist" cartoons and people shaming on "weak woman" at some pointed I began to hate Cinderella, because by that vision she was weak, coward, useless and just being there waiting for someone to save her. Some years ago I rewatched the movie and began question everything, as an adult my perspective changed and now I can say she is one of my favorites again, she was so patient, gentle and so damn strong she stayed positive and always looking at the good thing while living in hell on Earth. Specially on situations you can't change and only need to wait (like the pandemic right now) being positive and trying to live your life the best the circunstances allow you to is suh a strong message.

I know what you mean. I've gone through a phase or two where I turned my back on Cindy and didn't give her the love and appreciation she deserves and I feel sorry for that. I think it's largely because sadly others judge her too and her strengths aren't as obvious as some other characters.
At some stage sadly all of us get bullied and many people grow up with abusive family members and/or an abusive romantic partner. What Cinderella can teach us is that you can get out of it and remain a kind person. You can even grow to forgive and support those who are cruel if you choose (like how Cinderella forgave one of her stepsisters because she ended up being treated like how Cinderella was and wanted to be nicer) and that's not an easy thing to do.
Cinderella also tries her hardest to stand up for herself and her animal friends at times but does need help in the form of the animals, the fairy godmother and the prince because sometimes in life, especially in abusive situations, you need to have help and there's nothing wrong with that. Modern society I think just sadly pegs it as 'weak' because they don't like to imagine themselves as struggling or powerless.
Cinderella also tries to make it work with her stepfamily because they're the only family she has (aside from her beloved animals of course), and her father wanted them to work it out together. She ultimately leaves I think because she realizes not only that the stepfamily don't really love or want to cooperate with her but she's found someone who does love her and vice versa and can provide a better life not only for her but others she loves (i.e. her animal friends). I like to think she still provides some financial support to her stepfamily though (otherwise I don't know how they can live in her house), but she now stays at a safe distance from them and enjoys a better life with her animals and also a better relationship with at least one of her stepsisters :)

@@emmad.176 yeah, I really liked the development Anastacia got in the sequel movies and show us more about Cinderella's kindness. I still see people who tag her a a naive idiot for forgive them after all they did to her, but now as I grown up I couldn't care less about that opinion because at my eyes her mind is strong as fuck.

@@OcioCamaraMx Yeah anyone who's been bullied will probably tell you that forgiveness doesn't come easy and like you say, it goes to show how kind and strong Cinderella is. It also shows that sometimes the bullies can change :)

I love Cinderella, of all of the princesses, she is the most kind and the most strong. To have been made a slave in your own home since childhood and yet remain positive, kind, and continue to dream shows an INSANE amount of inner strength!! Love her!!

I don't understand why people think Cinderella is lazy or weak... she's abused! And she stays true to herself throughout and stays kind. That's amazing strength. And the unfortunate truth about abuse is that outta very difficult to escape without some kinds of powerful event involving others helping or the public.

Her sense of spiteful hope in the face of abusive adversity is one of the reasons why Cinderella will always be one of my favorite Disney princesses.
Also I think Bruno showed up at least once in Cinderella 2. He’s the one in Cinderella’s bed when Prudence comes to wake her up on her first day in the palace.
I’ve watched that movie too many danged times, but the music in it is such bop-material. 😂
Also may I make mention, and I know you push the importance of this in the video but imma push it further, of the importance of the Anastasia redemption/finding love arc - in particular, one specific scene. At the end of it all, right before it cuts to the palace ball room with everyone dancing, including Anastasia and the baker, you can see Drizella having to be called several times to follow her mother back home after they’d witnessed Anastasia rebelling against Lady Tremaine. Drizella stays, and watches, with a look of, what I interpreted as, “Could that happen for me, too?”
Character growth: even in the minuscule, you love to see it.

Yass I loved this video as a feminist people thinks it’s weird I love Cinderella but she’s the perfect example of how people should handle things after traumatic experiences her family abused her and used her for years she never once held a grudge or was bitter at her life circumstances or her family she still did her duties knowing and manifesting her life would one day soon get better in Cinderella 2 she refuses to change herself and her standards to fit into the typical “princess” standards which again it’s what being a feminist is about refusing to change to fit into the “typical” female standards which is BS because there is no right or wrong way to be a woman in Cinderella 3 she faces the most difficult life choice of all forgiveness which she does graciously overall she’s not a gold digger she’s not a horrible role model she’s the perfect example of being yourself and remaining humble, kind and loving no matter what life throws at you! 🥰

Cinderella is a victim of abuse since childhood who copes by day dreaming as she does housework, expecting her to be like Katniss is unfair and insensitive. Victims of abuse, especially those of narcisistic abuse, develop echoism and it's something that takes years of therapy to deprogram. I agree.

My real name is Jacinda and I have liked to call myself Jacindarella because all my life I have been abused and demeaned by people that were considered to be my family. I have been hurt physically, mentally, even more than that... Yet I have tried so hard to be happy and positive. It's so hard to keep a smile through all the pain. Thankfully the abuse has stopped for the most part and I have found a prince who took me in and loved me, scars and all.

I think Cinderella's original goal to get out her situation was to wait it out. Daughters usually moved out when they got married, so the step sisters could get married and leave. Then it was just Tremaine left, assuming she didn't go to live with one of the daughters.

From an animation standpoint, Cinderella is also the most active Disney princess of the pre-Renaissance era. She's constantly moving around on screen doing something (quite a feat for Disney at the time!) and only was still when she was
    1. Sleeping
    2. Crying after the traumatic dress ripping
To say she's "waiting around" is nothing short of insulting. :)
She is also a sassypants. From her first scene. She's not happy she's in her situation, but she's making the best of it through hard work.

I really liked your video! I feel like Cinderella is getting the attention she deserves, the points you make are so true, and besides that, it's a fantasy story, there are a lot of stories these days that are about people who are simply blessed with the opportunity to live an one lifetime experience. Besides that, I think if there were to criticize a princess from that era of Disney, it would be Sleeping Beauty, were Aurora simply trusts a stranger she met in the woods and somehow that was the solution to her problems? But anyways, congrats for the video!

Thanks for standing up for my favorite Disney princess! She's so underrated.
Also underrated: the genius comedic duo that is the King and the Duke. They are hilarious together and make that movie so much funnier than anyone ever seems to remember or appreciate. The best line of the movie in my opinion is when the Duke gently suggests to the King that he can be patient waiting for the Prince to get married and have babies, and the King bellows, "I AM PATIENT!!" 🤣 It's so good! I love all their scenes. [End somewhat unrelated side note]

Now that I have more than I ever thought possible, I respect Cinderella's ability to get up every morning and live her life.
My first year away from that hell I was mess and I've had to cope with physical and psychological consequences my entire life. It takes a lot of energy and self determination to break the cycle of abuse.
