It's come to my attention (thanks to some beloved people) that I grossly mispronounced "Maori." There is no excuse, I was just stupidly confident that I pronounced the word correctly and I didn't bother to double check. I'm so sorry to any Polynesians who felt hurt by my negligence! I want to pin this comment because the last thing I want is for people to repeat my mistakes! "Maori" is pronounced more like "mohree" with a slight roll to the r. ❤️
idk bout other Maori but i personally always appreciate it when people give it a try. thank you for putting in the effort to correct yourself and educate others! especially since it is Te Reo Maori (Maori language) week here in New Zealand
You also pronounced Te Rangi Hīroa incorrectly, but outside out NZ people rarely pronounce māori words and names correctly. But the rest of the video is ka pai
@@bonniehowell4259 on the Mulan thing, she was talking about how the creators took it from different times so she stated that it was accurate if they put it 300 years later
Depends on version. There is a theory there was more than one Mulan - 1. Yue Nu, martial artist (who used Qi) and heroine of the Yue State. Fate = suicide, posthumous goddess. 2. Northern Wei Dynasty (not Mongolian, but a Xianbei Tartar States. The Xianbei was added to the Mongols much, much later) Fate = prostitute. 3. Red Sleeved Maiden, Tang Dynasty. Fate = happy ending and marries a famous General. 4. Other women whose names were lost to history. Fate = Unknown. Then along came the Yuan, Ming , and Qing Dynasties - which combined them into a single personage much like our King Arthur. They combined her into a single person due to Han Chinese nationalism - they did not like being ruled by a foreign dynasty and needed a hero that could kick the asses of the villains of the week.
@@wateringcan5369 ok then what about tiana? Her dress wasn’t nearly as early, not to mention it was magically produced so it technically didn’t have to fit any actual styles
@@XiaoIsMyHusbandBTW yes but the whole thing is supposed to be judging on historical accuracy, so she’s judging the dress based on historical accuracy, she’s not rlly taking magic into consideration for a lot of these cuz then the video wouldn’t be judging based on historical accuracy
While Tiana's official dress is not very accurate to the 1920's, she does wear a lot of time accurate clothing such as the drop waist flapper dress and an Anita Baker inspired look. It is definitely one of my favorite Disney movies as a jazz musician and lover of fashion! Love this series and can't wait to see what other movies you decide to dissect.
I agree! I think the fact that it isn't accurate works to its advantage because it makes the moment more magical. although I'm a stickler for historical accuracy I think when magic is involved it doesn't matter as much as creating a magical feel and aura for the audience
Kennedi Campbell Tiana goes through multiple dresses throughout the movie so I think OP is talking about those dresses not her official one made from swamp findings Watch this if you want to see what they mean: th-cam.com/video/H8GrYC6KmSs/w-d-xo.html
I think the dress that she wore on the trolley in the beginning of the movie with the hat and the green coat. That dress looked (kinda) historically accurate
I always got the vibe that Mulan's family were nobility but that they had limited funds as a result of her father becoming disabled. Therefore they could not afford servants or luxuries that would correspond with their status, which explains why, despite living in such a large home with sprawling manicured gardens and large family temple, Mulan does servants chores and has modest possessions. And, since their only family (aside from Grandma Fa) depicted in the film are the ghosts of their ancestors, Mulan's father appears to be the only living male descendant of the family. Leaving them without any clan backing and no uncles or nephews to provide support (or potentially adopt). Making Mulan the sole inheritor of her clan, which is why her marriage would be such a critical issue to the survival of her family line.
@@yonicorn1641 Same. His name was specifically known to the Emperor's own scribe, so he was a big deal. He was also apparently wise: he knew that employing servants would deplete their money, and he could not work to bring any more income in. So that's why Mulan does the chores.
I feel like you can't really rate Rapunzel's dress on historical accuracy because she made it herself without reference or context from the outside world of what's popular. With that in mind I feel like it's meant to look costumey and dreamy while still being functional. This would explain the pink/purple as well as the lace trim and overall shape of the dress.
And also, she kind of points out herself: Mother Gothel probably DID want her to look cheap, she seems like the kind of person that wouldn't want anyone "looking better" then her, so of course Rapunzel's dress wouldn't seem the nicest because Gothel would get nice cloth for herself and maybe not for Rapunzel, or Rapunzel would get whatever scraps Gothel didn't want.
I always found that Tiana was the best-dressed Disney princess: she has the most costume changes and all of her dresses both look good on her and are fitting to the timeline. Her iconic "wedding" dress may not be historically accurate but it's ravishing and it sets her off to best advantage. If I had a choice among all the dresses of all Disney princesses, I would go for this no questions asked. :-)
Please note mother gothel DID call rapunzel “sloppy and underdressed” AND rapunzel DID sew so she probably made her own dress. Plus she’s only 18 I thought she did a pretty good sewing job if she made it herself considering she hadn’t seen anyone else in all those years lols 😂💓
honestly rapunzel probably had very few sources with little to no pictures, so she had total free will with the making of her dress. she probably had it for a while, given the childish pink and purple colors
Rapunzel is wearing a German dirndl. She was treated essentially as a maid, locked in the tower to do chores all day every day. Maids and peasants often wore dirndls since they were work clothes near the time of their invention. While she may not be perfectly historically accurate, she's more so than you give her credit for, especially since Mother Gothel did not want her to know that she was royalty.
Yes exactly! I was a bit confused by the comments about Rapunzel’s clothing in this video because though I get that France heavily influenced fashion in its neighboring countries, I remembered seeing paintings and drawings from Germany around this century with clothing that has aspects that reminds me of Rapunzel’s. Of course it’s not entirely accurate, but enough for me to get the reference/inspiration.
Yeesss, I didn't like the comments she made on her dress, cause I am half German and Dirndl is a big part of our culture and also well Rapunzel is my favorite Princess but I feel like she didn't see the bigger picture. Cause as you said, Rapunzel wasn't treated as royalty but more like a maid so it makes way more sense for her to wear more of a higher quality Dirndl. And it really did offend me to hear that it looks like a bad halloween costume as this is my culture
@@mel6623 I'm half German as well and it BARELY looks like a dirndl. There's no apron (which is a key part of the outfit as it's a 3rd of the entire outfit BTW) and it's made of a satin material in the movie rather than a natural fiber like cotton in real life, so it really doesnt come across as a dirndl whatsoever. Also, Mina isn't saying that dirndls look like a bad halloween costume - she's saying that this interpretation looks as such since they did a lazy job of making rapunzel's dress
@@mel6623 I am German and i wouldn't go as far as to say Dirndls are a big part of our culture. Sure it's the traditional clothing in Bavaria (and Austria), but not really outside. I am not a Bavarian, so i don't know how important it is to have a Dirndl. But as far as i know, it's mainly a Otkoberfest thing nowadays. Or for some a kind of wedding dress (only seen in the german version of "say yes to the dress"). And yes *Bavaria =/= Germany* , even if all the stereotypes suggest otherwise. (Hell, Bavaria doesn't even want to be a part of Germany - culture wise)
I wish Mulan was marketed in her every day dress, mostly because she's so uncomfortable in the matchmaker one. And Rapunzel merchandise should have her with short hair.
And now they’re doing the same thing with Encanto, marketing Isabela in the pink dress that represents her confinement to being “perfect” rather than her colorful outfit at the end of the film where she’s free to be herself and experiment
i mean technically short hair rapunzel and colorful dress isabela would be huge "spoilers" for the ends of their respective movies. i wqs def always annoyed by all the use of mulans matchmaker dress tho, wish they had used an outfit she wore for more of the movie!
@@vanshika_cool Agree with the merchandise one, but I am sort of defending the series for keeping the long hair because it was used for plot purposes. She did have her hair short at the end of the movie tho!
But it was 1920s. Mulan is in 500s AD. It does remind me of upcoming a real historical drama about a lady whose husband died, he passed down his entire wealth to her and she didnt have kids and she continue the business. Her live was difficult but she rise above and, She is the richest woman in china 300 BC, she helped fund the construction of great wall She also fund lake of mercury for chinese 1st emperor's tomb, which to this day haven't been excavated
@@angelabby2379 That's true, however Tina was a black lady living in the southern US in the 1920's when segregation was still a thing; and almost everyone was racist. She'd realistically have to sit in the back of the bus, eat at separate restaurants from white people, and even use separate drinking fountains and bathrooms.
this is really well researched and i agree, tiana's ball gown dress is not accurate at all, almost every other outfit is actually extremely historically accurate, even taking into account her financial situation and the fact that her mother is a seamstress.
They cant. The first thing you learn when you studie animation is to make everything simple. "Simple lines, simpel design, simpel way to succés"-My beloved teacher. Africas culture has (normaly) alot of details. Prints and parterna and gold things and alot more. If you look at the other prinseses, they always have a very simpel look. They have to.
@Sam as Long as they dont make an "african strong women carecter" but a good carecter that happens to be a women, happens to be african and happens to be strong (not masculins strong like ex captian Marvel, but femenim strong like ex Belle) then am happy.
but rapunzel at the time wasnt a noble- like she was, but she wasnt aware. i just dont feel like its fair comparing rapunzels dress to a queen when she wasnt even aware that she was a royal.
She compare it to the queen to said it looks just like a simpler version of it. So even if let's say her dress is not for a noble then it would be the queen who is very under dressed.
I'm a little disappointed you didn't talk about Tiana's 'hostess dress'. It would have been great to hear about how accurate it may have been compared to her princess dress.
Easily THE BEST dress she had in the whole film. Her wedding dress is…fine? And her Halloween Dress is very basic (which is the point.) But yeah. Her Hostess Dress should’ve been the one reviewed. That or all the outfits are. The Princesses TM every day outfits need far more love even if they’re not “f a n c y~” -le horror.-
amazing! in reference to Mulan's family's status, it's entirely possible that they were upper class and poor! The social structure in China was split up in mostly a consistent fashion for many centuries. It's possible that her family belonged to the nobility, as many members of the nobility lost their wealth but retained their status. This left people in situations somewhat similar to Mulan's, where they retained large amounts of land (depending on their family's structure) but were left in poverty. There are some accounts of noble women selling cloth work and jewelry to help sustain the family.
Omg i think this is true. Its like pride and prejudice situation and they also don't have sons. So their only option is for mulan to be auspicously engaged with rich upper class xD. Ow her father just worried for her 🤧
Weiiird comparison here, but in the recent hunger games book, Coriolanus family was incredibly poor, and they would scavange everything they could to still appear high class. Reminded me of it.
I like Rapunzel’s dress in the sense that it emphasizes her child-like naivety. She doesn’t really know the world and, as a result, her “fairy tale” dress is more traditionally emblematic of that, with the childish outfit (similar to things worn at Renaissance fairs) most girls her age would find silly. But she’s been locked away in a tower, so how would she know that? Also, I doubt Gothel’s getting her princess-worthy material. I even suspect she’d do the opposite, to conceal Rapunzel’s status while also appeasing the girl’s whims. We have to consider its for young girls. She’s outgrown the dress, and it looks like every thing a little girl would stick into a dress to wear for herself (or himself, no judgement). But that’s just me.
I agree. Even though she was noble, she didn’t know she was and Mother Gothel wouldn’t have dressed her as one. I wish she more so compared the way Rapunzel’s to Germany’s lower class style at the time. They were obviously poor as Mother Gothel wouldn’t have loads of money hanging around. Was a little disappointed in that one.
Stephanye Ann Yeah, some of it is individualized to characters. Like Merida, her sleeves are slashed to show she doesn’t believe in high-class aristocracy and is willing to “expose” her (elbow) undergarments (scandalous!). She rips it at the midpoint of the movie when she shoots arrows. It’s pretty obvious why that was there, for character reasons.
I thought one of the reasons Rapunzel’s dress fit her the way it did was because she had gotten a dress when she was younger (maybe as a gift or maybe it was sewn?) and wasn’t able to be let out after that, so she started to outgrow it, but it still fit her since she was pretty young in the movie
@@lilstinker7361 that is what i gathered. It was an older dress hence the shortness and tightness. I don't think mother gothel would bother getting her new clothes unless necessary. I also think that rapunzel likely made the dress herself with material from mother gothel. Hence the low quality. We know she can make dresses from her opening number
@@pineape1053 she said at the beginning of the video that she was rating the dresses that Disney uses for the princesses while marketing them, that's why she talked about that one 👍
to be fair for Merida's though, the slashes in her dress weren't detailing, they were just rips because she ripped the dress herself for mobility. this was such a great video!!
I feel like Tiana's ballgown can get a pass, as it was created by magic, and our suspension of disbelief plays into the scene. But immediately following that scene her other wedding dress is pretty accurate along with everything else she wears :)
the only justification is she married prince naveen technically he is from maldonia ( mix of macedonia and maldive), so she can kinda wear european greek royal gown from 16-18th century which is probably a big puffy gown
The slashes in merida's sleeves are becoming she loves archery. The dress restricts her movement. She did this again with her betrothal dress during the archery contest.
Hot take: since Rapunzel makes her own clothes and isn’t familiar with the relevant fashions of her time, it would have been really cool to see her make a dress inspired by her paintings. I would absolutely love to have seen her make a night sky dress or something like that!
As a maori teen, I was so excited for Moana to come out. Finally some representation (most people don't even know what a Maori person is). My mother told me that it was pretty accurate, although there as some Disney pizazz sprinkled in. I went as Moana for Halloween last year
wow! i really have never heard of a Maori person, is it okay to say it like that? I really want to learn more about the beautiful culture and traditions.
"We're not here today to listen to a lengthy tedtalk on why Mulan was the most groundbreaking princess of her time, why she's a beacon of tenacity and ambition, and why she's an icon for Asian-American girls, transboys and other gender non-conforming people alike. No, we're gonna be talking about something much more important than all of that... HER DRESS." I *WHEEZED* Y'ALL
i feel like sheer opera gloves shouldnt be used for elsa because her taking her gloves off was an important plot point in the movie. if she took her old gloves off, it would have refuted the point if she just.. put new ones on..
the thing is, the reason a lot of the older (2D) movies had less accurate dresses is because most dresses that would be time appropriate are very complicated and would be extremely difficult to animate
Really wish more people would see this comment, a lot of people will think the animators are just lazy when it comes to designing the princesses clothes.
they also make it that way to be able to make merch and re-produce to make the princess dresses in the parks, imagine if they had to wear the time-accurate ones they'd get instantly destroyed.
I’m going to argue that Rapunzel, Anna, and Moana actually make sense from narrative/story perspective -Rapunzel quite literally was isolated, made her own clothes, had to clean her Entire Tower By Herself, and only had 5 books (with Gothel as her only human companion for 17.999 years.) So, she’s going to go with what’s comfortable for her to wear and work in, with only Gothel as “design inspiration”, and pick colors that she herself likes. She’s not supposed to be “elegant” or stylish, she’s supposed to be Self-Dresses But Very Isolated. (Also her choice in purple was based around very distant memories of Corona’s Purple And Gold, with Pink being another “favorite color.” And as someone who’s painted? The palette she uses wouldn’t stain her dress since they’re pretty much the same Purples and Pinks, with very few darker or bolder colors.) Also Gothel does mock her as “sloppy and underdressed” but is also shown to quite literally keep Rapunzel infantalized. So…no nicer fabrics, no “Proper TM” Fashion Socialization. Raps is on her own to make her own fashions -Anna kinda ran from a ball straight to a mountain and had to buy whatever was left over from the winter season since…she isn’t exactly the type to prepare or think things through, and Winter Hit In Summer. She gets a pass. -Moana was forbidden to EVER so much as look at a boat. Of Course she’s in “indoor only” clothing-that’s literally all she would’ve had aside from her feathered ceremonial outfit. And she quite literally snuck out a boat-twice. By the end of the film she’s wearing the proper leaves. Maui wears the proper leaves. The Ancestors in her vision wear the proper leaves. So it’s not Negligence For Style, it’s because of characterization (almost everyone in Montonui wears the indoor bark vs leaves to emphasis the NO OCEAN law. Granted the fishermen should’ve narratively been the exception here, but I digress.)
Also for Rapunzel and Anna, they don't live in "our world" unlike Tiana or Mulan their world's are fiction based on these historic time periods so it further makes their clothing harder to rate
I don't think that's the point of this video. One could argue that Cinderella's dress shouldn't be accurate at all, since it was magically created by a fairy. But she's not taking in considering the plot or narrative of the movies, she's rating their accuracy despite of that. But yeah, how is Rapunzel supposed to know what trend is hot or not isolated in that tower?
I used to want to be merida so bad, I still remember when she came into the archery competition and was all like "I'll be fighting for me own hand", iconic. Peak feminism
The tiana one kinda made me sad cuz the whole entire rest of the movie she was one of the most historically accurate princesses even the blue princess dressand that one part I thought was supposed to be like magical and had swamp pieces all in it idk I could be biased but I was still sad
That's exactly what it was...she kind of glossed over the rest of her outfits. Tiana's dress in that scene is purely fantasy...and supposed to give her that flower princess vibe.
@@iriemonmon yeah, I loved the video, but ur right, I also noticed how she kinda just glossed over tiana and Tiana's section was smaller than everyone elses😔I was like "huh? That's it😭"
exactly. i believe ModernGurlz went over all her outfits and the rest were very historically accurate down to minor details. obviously they had to give her a more modern dress for her main look for marketing. i feel like she should've gotten extra points for the rest of the movie being so accurate. kind of sad now lol.
I chose to only focus on the "main dresses" as to not "compete" with other channels such as ModernGurlz and Glamour that do a breakdown per movie. Both of these channels have videos on costume in The Princess and the Frog more generally, so please check them out for more Tiana!
Ya I get why she did it but I wish she had mentioned a few other outfits too. That one is magically produced so it's not strange that it would be old-fashioned. The others were all her normal clothes so they have to be accurate
I feel like this “magical appearing” dresses of Tiana and Elsa dont need to be historically accurate, they are not tied to traditions, since they appear magically, they can be of any kind. They are also not looking to fit into society (especially Elsas is looking to do the opposite), as one could argue with Cinderella.
id argue elsas doesnt make sense because shes making it up herself and would have to suddenly have invented a whole new fashion style. tianas tho like the dress style she has happened before the time of her movie and like i could put on an old fashioned dress anyone can so a dress of an earlier time period being magic-ed up is fair enough really
I’ll agree with you on Tiana’s since she had no input on her dress and the rest of her clothes are generally 1920s, especially since the silhouette would have matched something her grandmother would have worn and possibly would still have tucked away so it wouldn’t have been a completely novel idea (her wearing smth from 1850-60s is the equivalent of someone wearing a dress from the 1950s today) and it works with the lily pad thing. However, Elsa created the dress she wears and might as well have sew it so I’d get something that differs a little since she wants to break away from traditional life but this is like someone wearing a bathing suit to a job interview.
@@fawnsimmes4586 of course they should. What does it mean when they say magical beautiful means european couture gown. @@PrinceSarah1 To sell the costume to little girls. That's it. Also so people could wear it at Disney land, but mostly little girls. Ever noticed that Elsa and Moana have huge heads and eyes and stubby arms and legs - much like the proportions of nine year olds? Disney knew what they were doing.
Not only that, that whole number was animated in the 20s art deco art style so they totally committed to the aesthetic in everything but the dress. I don't mind tho, I love the green dress and they do give her a (slightly) more accurate 20s silhouette dress for her church wedding, I think the green one was mostly for the theme since it's when she becomes a princess and breaks the spell so they wanted to give her a more princess-y look
Bow looking back, I guess giving Elsa Opera gloves would be bizarre as one of the focal points of her song Let it Go was getting rid of her last glove which always were the incarnation of her captivity... So not only it would be counterintuitive with her character arc but the fact that she'd summon them back on her own would make it even weirder...
Hello, just wanted to remind everyone who is arguing against her rates that... their her rates? They're personal rates that shes just sharing. She talks openly about what she is and isnt biased on. Her rating regarding rapunzels dress and the historical accuracy is confusing because Rapunzel clearly wears a German Dirndl- a peasant dress. The dress is except for the colour historically accurate. She can have her own opinion i am not saying otherwise but she probably wasn't aware of the existence of the Dirndl.
yes and also it's in Germany and her dress resembles Dirndls that maids wore in that time and as mother gothel kinda treated her as a maid this makes ver much sense.
also she'd literally NEVER BEEN OUTSIDE. Her dress resembles Gothel's, the only other person she has EVER met. How on earth could she even have an inkling of modern styles?
I’m actually from the neighborhood tiana is depicted in and it’s a Mardi Gras/collion costume. Hope you understand we have underground culture that isn’t all public

Tangled is definitely set in Germany, specifically Bavaria - the behind the scenes musical they made from the cruise ships confirm this. The rest of the women we see throughout the film (excluding Gothel and her actual mother) are in dirndls, which were often worn with puffy/loose sleeves. That also explains the lace trim and front lacing, which is typical of a dirndl. Rapunzel's dress obviously isn't a dirndl (though in some concept art she is drawn in a garment clearly inspired by dirndls), but she also made her own clothes and had literally no idea what the fashion trends outside her tower were like. The only woman dressed similarly to Rapunzel in the entire film is her mother, who apparently has only worn the same dress for 18 years (cos it's the same as the one at the start of the movie), even though the bodices are quite different.
But Rapunzels dress really does look like a more elegant youthful dirndl ( I am german btw) And I feel like her dress is very accurate especially for Bavaria
@@medmedmed333 I doubt that the animators of the movie knew that the series would one day place the kingdom in France. The animators of the film and the costume designer of the live production have all stated that traditional German clothing and architecture were the main references.

When it comes to Repunzel I think it plays into the idea that she isn’t aware of the world around her. It also makes sense for her to be historically inaccurate because she lives with someone from a completely different era. It also makes her look like more of an outcast to the people around her.
When I was like 13 and Frozen came out, I literally posted a mini Instagram rant with a hand drawn picture of Mulan, explaining why she is the ultimate feminist and best Disney princess, Lol. I was so mad that people had the audacity to hype Frozen as the only true feminist Disney movie. I couldn’t agree with you more!!!
Seriously! There's a lot of feminist examples in disney too, lilo and Nani, MULAN duh, tiana with owning a business and making her dreams come true coming up from nothing, Merida literally said F MEN and saved her brothers and mom from becoming bears.
yeah, considering that Gothel wouldn’t like to Rapunzel to look like a royal person but rather a lower classe one so it would be harder to find her as the lost princess
Cheap?? What about lace trimming, glossy satin, and pink and purple (probably expensive!) dyes looks cheap?? If anything rapunzel’s dress looks far too expensive to me, even if it is ill-fitting
@@sleepyghostgirl true, but Disney had to stylize it atleast a lil bit in order to sell to little girls. But compared to like the Marie Antoinette, her dress is quite a bit poorer. But I totally agree that for a peasant she looks hella expensive!
@@sleepyghostgirl the style that it was based off was supposed to be what peasants and poorer folk wore, but it got the disney treatment and became a fancy dress outfit with lace and glossy fabric and a dye that no poorer person would be able to afford.
Rapunzel’s dress IS 95% accurate. Here is why: Mother Gothel is from mid-evil times and she Kept that style. Mother Gothel is the one who styles Rapunzle and she makes all the clothes, she does not buy them (I know this because she owns a manikin for designers and seamstresses age also owns sewing supplies). The dress Rapunzel is wearing IS accurate to medieval times the only way it’s not accurate is usually there would be an apron and less vibrant colors (they used browns and greens). So yeah lol.
What era of the Medieval Period is Rapunzel's dress meant to emulate? It doesn't look accurate to anything I've seen before. Also they did have bright dyes in the Middle Ages. Even peasants could get their hands on garments dyed a certain popular shade of blue.
When you said Rapunzel was set in the 1780s, my reaction was, “WHAT?” They didn’t do their homework. The Queen doesn’t wear anything resembling what would have been worn at court anywhere across Europe at that time! They shouldn’t have given Tangled a historical time-stamp; it’s a fairytale and leave it at that.
I’m so glad you went in on Aladdin in the first video. I grew up as a Muslim girl of North African decent and even when I was little I remember being hurt by how the one character who was meant to represent me was so sexualized. I felt so uncomfortable and that was just a gross made up stereotype. I actually got in an argument with my neighbor last night cause he said the movie isn’t offensive at all and that I’m just sensitive. This all coming from a white man from Connecticut. There’s so much about that movie that is so deeply hurtful and offensive and it sucks when people try to shut you up when you try to speak out about the racism and prejudice you face in this country Anyways, I just really loved your portion of it and appreciate it
yes i even laughe xD than her peasant clothing is way way way way more accurate than her belly dancer outfit. they could have just add beautiful fabric to her peasant outfit and tada accurate representation
When I watched it when I was a child and saw the part that was very sexualized in the movie in her red outfit. I was personally uncomfortable watching it when I was younger.
I think thats also partly because of how 'harems" have been so misrepresented in history and media. In reality they were for the women to be protected and remain modest. But when male colonizers started visiting abroad and were not allowed to visit (for obvious reasons) it became a mentality of "Oh my, what must they be getting up to in there if were not allowed in" and so they started depicting harems in their writings and art of harems being basically brothels. And unfortunately people started taking that as a fact and just kind of continued to roll with that. And so yes Jasmine's look is partially based off modern sensibilities and fashion of the time, but I also feel like is based off bad muslim harem stereotypes.
This is a great video, but my grievance is that this only focuses on the dress the princesses are marketed with. Their casual outfits (usually including the one they actually wear for most of the film) are actually incredible, especially Tiana and all of the backgrounders :)
I think that's the point though, that these are the main dresses that Disney markets these princesses in - images & dolls etc. But i agree, other outfits are more accurate! Gotta respect the hustle though she must have spent weeks researching.
My brother actually wears a lava lava as formal wear all the time after having a teacher who was Polynesian and taught him about the culture. He was really worried about it at first and didn't want to offend anyone since he isn't Polynesian, but his teacher assured him it was ok, and since he knew the culture behind it and respected it, he considered it an honor that my brother was wearing it.
I adore tiana's gown but how on earth was it supposed to be considered specifically designed for her character, the silhouette disappointed me because she just looked like a green Cinderella. I love that each princess gets a distinct look and did like the flowered layers but hers was still lacking to me, no matter how beautiful she looked Edit: thanks for the analysis/history under this comment guys, I had never heard most of this and all of it makes the choice seem to be done for a better reason than recycling out of carelessness, which im glad about
I've always liked but seeing the other concept art idk why they didn't keep the green color palette with the more 1920s silhouette? It could have even beaded like a lot of dresses were because it's hardly animated for very long lmao
Honestly, considering the way they kept on referring back to the traditional, fairy tale “princess” throughout the story, I think the dress is more of a callback to that than any specific attempt at historical accuracy. It was a very direct visual interpretation of what happened within the story: by kissing Navine she became a “princess” thus breaking the spell. Thus, a very dramatic, stereotypical princess dress is appropriate for comparison’s sake, even if not necessarily for historical reference. I do wish we had more marketing of flapper Tiana, though. That is a lovely, historical and iconic outfit!
12:34 to be honest it makes sense that mother gothel wouldn’t want to dress rapunzel in expensive clothes because; 1.- rapunzel is supposed to never leave the tower, so it would be a waste of money 2.- if she was to leave the tower, she wouldn’t draw too much attention to her (aside from her hair) 3.- mother gothel would’ve used that money to buy herself higher quality clothing (i mean, she literally kidnapped a baby just because she had the power of rejuvenation, it’s not unreasonable to think she was driven by narcissism and vanity)
Mulan remains superior, her story, her dress, everything. Also I'm going to have to mention this, remember how Disney threatened to sue Barbie if they made an adaptation of the sleeping beauty - mostly because of Barbie's association with pink and the fact that Disney sold Aurora in a pink dress despite the fact that she wears the blue dress more in the movie, as Cinderella was being marketed in blue (rather than the silver dress seen in the movie) BECAUSE MONEY, as that is everything Disney cares about. Not like Barbie was going to do anything like the disney movie, as they wanted to adapt the Tchaikovsky ballet to finish their ballet trilogy. Now where the hypocrisy comes in, Barbie did Rapunzel in 2002. She wore a gorgeous purple gown, with puffy sleeves. Then Disney did Tangled, and she wears a floppy purple dress with puff sleeves. You're not going to tell me that it was a coincidence, Disney knew exactly what they were doing as they didn't have a purple colour coded princess yet. Very, very hypocritical. People try to tell me Tangled's dress was more accurate when it clearly was not.
Situations like this is why I can't stand Disney sometimes. I don't think they would have even won that case because they don't own Sleeping Beauty. That is a fairytale that has existed for centuries..
@@Adorablepizza146 I am 💯 it's about the dumb brand and how they made Aurora pink despite the pink dress only being in the movie for 30 seconds. That's just insecurity right there. Barbie should have gone through with it, it would have been a pretty ballet like Swan Lake or the Nutcracker. Doesn't even have much to do with Disney's version at all and I believe Barbie's character (which would have been called Rose) would have actually been the main character and not just gone for 70% of the movie. I like Sleeping Beauty but Disney's hypocrisy here is appalling
@@jordgubbe2895 THANK YOU, this has been living on my head for years lol. Barbie's movies were endearing af, in another timeline we have a Sleeping Beauty barbie movie, frikin sad ;A;

Seeing as Mulan is your favorite, I would love for you to do a review of the Mulan 2020 film, but focused on the fashion aspect, since Disney was going for a more realistic and historically accurate film (supposedly). But also one on Historical accurate Disney 'non-princesses" (as mentioned in another comment.)
From what I've heard, her equivalent dress and makeup in the movie are technically accurate in their separate parts, but were put together in the ugliest way possible
Okay as a hanfu enthusiast I am _so_ sad how they put the hanfu together... Mulan’s outfit looks horribly cheap and her make-up resembles clown make-up. It’s true they’re technically accurate, but it’s just...so...bad-looking (I wish they went for a more silky look). Even if they’re playing up how silly she feels and how she doesn’t fit in the outfit, they didn’t have to do hanfu so dirty like that... 😔 Even Taobao hanfu look better than Mulan’s outfit. They could’ve gone for historically accurate (in a more realistic look-I feel like her matchmaking outfit was way too bright) or even gone for a more xianxia/wuxia vibe since they had fantasy elements in the movie. If anyone’s interested in how pretty hanfu can actually be, you can check this really awesome blog out: ziseviolet.tumblr.com/ It shows both traditionally accurate and modern, modified/stylized hanfu, and offers a lot of helpful information. @@kukuandkookie Wow, thanks for all amazing info! That is also what I've heard, that a lot of the clothing in the film is technically correct but inappropriately used (like for wrong occasions) or made too bright/garish/cheap-looking.
@@kukuandkookie Depends on version. There is a theory there was more than one Mulan - 1. Yue Nu, martial artist (who used Qi) and heroine of the Yue State. Fate = suicide, posthumous goddess. 2. It would be really cool to see a “Reviewing Non-Disney Princesses” video, because that could include Anastasia, Odette, and maybe some Barbie characters. Anastasia as a movie is pretty intentionally historically inaccurate (as in its narrative literally rewrites history), but I always loved her style and how it changes. Maybe Megara could be in that lineup too, because Disney doesn’t treat her with any respect.
it makes me so happy that people agree!! I was just researching the other day to see if anyone has made a video about it or written any articles, and I didn't find anything, so this felt like the right place to come 😅
The Queen is back! Dear Mina, I discovered your channel a few days ago thanks to your Avatar video, and I’m totally obsessed💫 I’m more of a film geek, but boy do I appreciate a good video essay on costume design and it’s utter importance to the story. Could you consider making a video dissecting fashion of a tv show? There are so many great period dramas out there (the Crown, Boardwalk Empire, Rome etc). Or perhaps something more modern? Anyway, lots of love from a cinephile with no fashion sense whatsoever💕💕💕
I am very happy, as a Norwegian, with your coverage of bunads and Norwegian folk dresses. How you included it, and the research was phenomenal! It really makes my heart flutter!
I gotta say though, both Elsa and Rapunzel were literally locked away from people so I doubt either of them would be heavily influenced by modern clothing trends.... I'm also Norwegian and live in Bergen, and just want to give you props for not bringing up the Bergens bunad and saying that as Arendelle is based on Bergen, she should wear that particular pattern and colour- because it straight up didn't exist until 1936. As someone who grew up in Norway I know how fierce the bunad debate is and how obsessed people are with what we can call a real bunad and what is a festdrakt (translates to formal wear and looks just like a bunad)- and I think you handled it really well by saying folkwear!!! Her hat and braids are also super nice touches!
The Princes tend to be far worse off historical-accuracy-wise. But men's fashion was far more elaborate and flamboyant than what we imagine for romantic hero leads. Snow White's Prince would be in full on codpiece, ruff, poofy shorts and all that good stuff. Not exactly the man of your (modern) dreams)
I’d say as a Bavarian (southern German) person that rapunzels dress looks very similar to a traditional Bavarian dress called a Dirndl the patterns and designs and the way the dress is tied looks identical to a dirndl and I’d like to point out she was a commoner before a royal and I don’t think mother Gothel would dress her in the latest fashions from France
Personally I think Disney did what they could with Moana’s dress. It is formal, and she wore it rather casually, so that deduction is accurate, but it’s a child’s movie, so I’m not sure that accuracy can be held standard when referencing toplessness. They still had to conform to come societal guidelines, no matter the history behind the dress.
I agree with what you’re saying. Especially since Moana is supposed to be 16, so Moana + topless would = NO! GOD, PLEASE NO! Also, Jasmine’s sexualization as well as the sexualization of the princesses that are underage is gross and makes a part of me wanna die when I remember it’s there.
i mean, neither did anyone in the kingdom tho, the king looks like he's about to behead his wife and create the church of england 😂 Watching the movie i seriously thought Tangled was set in the 1500s
I actually really like Rapunzel's dress and the fact that she hasn't seen LITERALLY NOBODY for 18 years, and still makes her own gorgeous casual dress, is incredible.
A quick thing about "rosemaling", it literally means "rosepainting" because it was a painting style used for furniture and architecture, and whilst the embroidery on many norwegian folkdresses were inspired by this painting style, the actual sewing technique would not be called that. The embroidery on folkdresses is now most commonly reffered to as "bunadsbroderi", literally meaning the embroidery of the bunad, or if it's a pattern on the hemline it will be called a "bord".
I am very certain that Disney knew in every occasion what the historical accurate look would have been and they consciously decided to go for princess vibes over realism because the young girls watching wouldn’t know. I was nine when tangled came out and Rapunzels dress was probably what I imagined someone from that time period to wear. Edit: I also remember how surprised I was by the story since I am from Germany and grew up with Grimm’s fairy tales which actually aren’t too family friendly.
My favorite princesses are Merida and Tiana just because I always felt they were the most powerful, with Merida not marrying anyone and Tiana opening her own restaurant the 20s as a black woman
I like to think that Rapunzel made her own dress (i know that she did, just stay with me) and since we know that Mother Gothel is from the Renaissance era. And since She is the only person that Rapunzel is around she based her dress off of the only person she knew. I could be entirely off base if Rapunzels dress isn’t even Renaissancey.
@@eilio639 i think the first time the story was "printed" it was made by an italian. One year later a french women wrote it as well. And then the Brüder Grimm put it in their story-collection.
I love Rapunzel and her dress so much. The reason it wasn't historically accurate is because well ... she didn't know anything about the outside world so how could it have even been accurate. And she made her own dress so it's not like she bought it from a store where they had historically accurate clothes. I love her dress and her so much. ♥️😂
They would have been tied, her dress hints at that style but of course animation at that time wasn’t so detailed. Edit: to clarify, in the movie they would have been tied cause the creators mashes various eras of fashion in Scotland and other countries to make what we see. Merida’s green dress would have most likely looked closer to this www.deviantart.com/wickfield/art/Historically-Accurate-Merida-551965259 and would have been a bit more looser. What we see on screen still fits her character! I imagine having full historically accurate clothing would have been next to impossible to animate along with her hair
In the movie it actually shows that the dress hadn't always been like that but because of how active she was she kept ripping it (it's the scene where she rips her dress and takes aim at the target)

Just in case anyone wanted this, heres the order of the Princesses based on her rankings. Jasmine and Pocahontas 1/10 Ariel 2/10 Rapunzel 2.5/10 Belle 3.5/10 Elsa 5/10 Cinderella and Tiana 5.5/10 Snow White 6/10 Merida and Anna 6.5/10 Moana 7.5/10 Mulan 8.5/10
I'm so offended on Rapunzel's behalf. She had literally never been outside before. How could she possibly know what was fashionable? The others, I agree with, especially Jasmine. That outfit always confused me. Thanks for putting this here, as I don't have time to watch the full video right now, but I was curious :)
@@lindseysquire8417 same with tiana literally all her other outfits were almost completely accurate, not to mention that dress is magic so it’s would really need to be in style
@@XiaoIsMyHusbandBTW Idk, Tiana's dresses usually had really low waistlines, in an era where waists didn't really exist. In the 20s, it was all about that straight silhouette. I guess you could argue that it's because they're poor, but since her mom is a seamstress, you'd think she'd be wearing at least basic versions of modern styles. Some of them were fantasy/costume dresses (like the magic one), so that makes sense, but her yellow work dress was very Disney-ish. Her hat and coat were very in-style, as was everything Charlotte wore, so I'm prepared to forgive Disney on this one.
Merida's dress is intended to be simple due to her lifestyle, as she's shown explicitly disliking proper noblewear. I think its a reasonable detail to have her in commoners clothing rather than what she was supposed to wear, since her entire story arc is about not being who she's "supposed" to be

Making Mulan the sole inheritor of her clan, which is why her marriage would be such a critical issue to the survival of her family line.
her father faught in a previous war and seems to be a respected man so ig tht explains it
I think Mulan's family gained the land for her father service to the empirer. He could no longer serve is why he had no servants.
Depends on the poem and version. In some her her father was quite rich and with said wealth, she bought herself armor and outfitted her own regiment.
actually i thought exactly the opposide - that she was a village girl, but her father served in the was and was compensated a lot by land and money
This
as well as the fact that it kinda looks outgrown :')
Huh, thats actually pretty interesting, I've watched the movie like 20 times and never knew that haha
I was thinking the same thing.
Plus she’s only 18 I thought she did a pretty good sewing job if she made it herself considering she hadn’t seen anyone else in all those years lols 😂💓
rapunzels is one of my favorite dresses, I may be biased though because her movie is one of my favorite 🌚
she probably only had gothels dresses to reference
honestly rapunzel probably had very few sources with little to no pictures, so she had total free will with the making of her dress. she probably had it for a while, given the childish pink and purple colors
What I was thinking! She was stuck in the tower her whole life. She wouldn’t have the societal influence for her clothes
Raps? No, that’s the “idiotic” show
Rapunzel is wearing a German dirndl.
@@mel6623 im Austrian can agree (Bavarians and Austrians both wear the beautiful dirndls)
IKR literally none of the Rapunzel merch has her with short hair, even in the series her hair was long. I loved her short hair a lot
They want you to buy two, so you can cut the hair of the second doll. Disney is witty, but not so much as they think

But yeah. Her Hostess Dress should’ve been the one reviewed. That or all the outfits are. The Princesses TM every day outfits need far more love even if they’re not “f a n c y~” -le horror.-
literally this
I mean she does say that she’ll only be looking at their main dresses (the ones that disney markers the most).
amazing! in reference to Mulan's family's status, it's entirely possible that they were upper class and poor!
Actually Rapunzelns dress is very accurate! She is wearing a traditional german dirndl which was common for peasants.
i wish that she talked about meridas "proper" dress that her mother made her wear

The dress she's wearing IS that dress. She ripped it in an act of rebellion. Wish that was mentioned in the video.

to be fair for Merida's though, the slashes in her dress weren't detailing, they were just rips because she ripped the dress herself for mobility. this was such a great video!!
I feel like Tiana's ballgown can get a pass, as it was created by magic, and our suspension of disbelief plays into the scene. But immediately following that scene her other wedding dress is pretty accurate along with everything else she wears :)
the only justification is she married prince naveen technically he is from maldonia ( mix of macedonia and maldive), so she can kinda wear european greek royal gown from 16-18th century which is probably a big puffy gown
her white dress is underrated
This
exactly, plus her dress shouldn’t have been compared to middle class people of america. but to royal people of maldonia!!
@KG BLOCK no, bc the fairy godmother would still want cinderella to look cute and be on trend

I would’ve liked to see that too!
Barbie’s Rapunzel has a whole sequence you’d absolutely love then 😉
As a maori teen, I was so excited for Moana to come out. Finally some representation (most people don't even know what a Maori person is). My mother told me that it was pretty accurate, although there as some Disney pizazz sprinkled in.

i feel like sheer opera gloves shouldnt be used for elsa because her taking her gloves off was an important plot point in the movie. if she took her old gloves off, it would have refuted the point if she just.. put new ones on..
the thing is, the reason a lot of the older (2D) movies had less accurate dresses is because most dresses that would be time appropriate are very complicated and would be extremely difficult to animate
Nonaya Bidness yeah 3D is a lot easier to have details with
Really wish more people would see this comment, a lot of people will think the animators are just lazy when it comes to designing the princesses clothes.

they also make it that way to be able to make merch and re-produce to make the princess dresses in the parks, imagine if they had to wear the time-accurate ones they'd get instantly destroyed.
Thisss... Thank you 👌👌 Pepple seem to forget in what time period those movies were made. 🙄
I’m going to argue that Rapunzel, Anna, and Moana actually make sense from narrative/story perspective
-Rapunzel quite literally was isolated, made her own clothes, had to clean her Entire Tower By Herself, and only had 5 books (with Gothel as her only human companion for 17.999 years.) So, she’s going to go with what’s comfortable for her to wear and work in, with only Gothel as “design inspiration”, and pick colors that she herself likes. She’s not supposed to be “elegant” or stylish, she’s supposed to be Self-Dresses But Very Isolated. (Also her choice in purple was based around very distant memories of Corona’s Purple And Gold, with Pink being another “favorite color.” And as someone who’s painted? The palette she uses wouldn’t stain her dress since they’re pretty much the same Purples and Pinks, with very few darker or bolder colors.)
Also Gothel does mock her as “sloppy and underdressed” but is also shown to quite literally keep Rapunzel infantalized. So…no nicer fabrics, no “Proper TM” Fashion Socialization. Raps is on her own to make her own fashions
-Anna kinda ran from a ball straight to a mountain and had to buy whatever was left over from the winter season since…she isn’t exactly the type to prepare or think things through, and Winter Hit In Summer.
Thank you💜
Also for Rapunzel and Anna, they don't live in "our world" unlike Tiana or Mulan their world's are fiction based on these historic time periods so it further makes their clothing harder to rate
Same for Tiana, I think that to be fair I would rate her other outfits instead. Maybe the white wedding dress uses

For Elsa's ice dress, opera gloves might have looked nicer but they couldn't put her in gloves as gloves symbolised hiding her powers.
THIS. also every other one of tianas dresses are historically accurate so giving a 1/10 without considering the rest of her outfits isn’t fair

Her dress was purple and purple dye was very very expensive and so signified royalty. That's not accurate at all for a commoner.

There’s so much about that movie that is so deeply hurtful and offensive and it sucks when people try to shut you up when you try to speak out about the racism and prejudice you face in this country

Well it isn't even offensive....
I'm sorry you have to deal with your culture being misrepresented and objectified. That's not something that should happen to any people or culture.
The one dress that tiana wore in her Almost There song actually looked a lot more related to the time period
I love that each princess gets a distinct look and did like the flowered layers but hers was still lacking to me, no matter how beautiful she looked
Edit: thanks for the analysis/history under this comment guys, I had never heard most of this and all of it makes the choice seem to be done for a better reason than recycling out of carelessness, which im glad about
I've always liked but seeing the other concept art idk why they didn't keep the green color palette with the more 1920s silhouette? It could have even beaded like a lot of dresses were because it's hardly animated for very long lmao
I thought so too! I do like the different details though.
It looked like the kind of wedding dress that was popular in 2009 imo (except green). Big ballgown skirt, strapless.

12:34 to be honest it makes sense that mother gothel wouldn’t want to dress rapunzel in expensive clothes because;
1.- rapunzel is supposed to never leave the tower, so it would be a waste of money
2.- if she was to leave the tower, she wouldn’t draw too much attention to her (aside from her hair)
3.- mother gothel would’ve used that money to buy herself higher quality clothing (i mean, she literally kidnapped a baby just because she had the power of rejuvenation, it’s not unreasonable to think she was driven by narcissism and vanity)
@@jordgubbe2895 THANK YOU, this has been living on my head for years lol. Barbie's movies were endearing af, in another timeline we have a Sleeping Beauty barbie movie, frikin sad ;A;
Sleeping Beauty isn't even Disney's original story 🤦♀️
@@sage9996 most of the classic disney movies are old fairytales and not their original stories. same with Barbie. Disney is just really all about the money.
Even Taobao hanfu look better than Mulan’s outfit.
They could’ve gone for historically accurate (in a more realistic look-I feel like her matchmaking outfit was way too bright) or even gone for a more xianxia/wuxia vibe since they had fantasy elements in the movie.
If anyone’s interested in how pretty hanfu can actually be, you can check this really awesome blog out: ziseviolet.tumblr.com/
It shows both traditionally accurate and modern, modified/stylized hanfu, and offers a lot of helpful information.

@@kukuandkookie mulan matchmaking is nowhere near accurate xD. They took the wrapped dress from 220BC
@@kukuandkookie
I was thinking it might be cool to do a video on historical accuracy of American Girl Doll's dresses!
this ^^^
Yes yes yes YES
it makes me so happy that people agree!! I was just researching the other day to see if anyone has made a video about it or written any articles, and I didn't find anything, so this felt like the right place to come 😅
The Queen is back! Dear Mina, I discovered your channel a few days ago thanks to your Avatar video, and I’m totally obsessed💫
I’m more of a film geek, but boy do I appreciate a good video essay on costume design and it’s utter importance to the story. Could you consider making a video dissecting fashion of a tv show? There are so many great period dramas out there (the Crown, Boardwalk Empire, Rome etc). Or perhaps something more modern?
Anyway, lots of love from a cinephile with no fashion sense whatsoever💕💕💕
Totally agree!
i found it from the first video in this series
What's a cinephile?
I figured Arendal would be a prime inspiration because of the name, also the geography isn't far off from Arendelle either.
Hallo jeg er også norsk
Also, a prince series would be so cool!
That would be so cool!
Yes at least one :). Maybe a japanese prince or samurai . Or prince and the paupers
Opaque z Yeah! I was also thinking Prince Charming or Prince Navene!
LB yeah I don’t know how I would feel about waking up to him kisssing me
I’d say as a Bavarian (southern German) person that rapunzels dress looks very similar to a traditional Bavarian dress called a Dirndl the patterns and designs and the way the dress is tied looks identical to a dirndl and I’d like to point out she was a commoner before a royal and I don’t think mother Gothel would dress her in the latest fashions from France
Rapunzel was locked up so she didn't know the fashion 😀
Oop~
she’s judging based on character illustration, not the storyline of the character 😀
i mean, neither did anyone in the kingdom tho, the king looks like he's about to behead his wife and create the church of england 😂 Watching the movie i seriously thought Tangled was set in the 1500s
@@onikasqueendom8846 shes still wrong, repunzel is wearing a dirndl which IS historically accurate.
@@onikasqueendom8846 should still consider the lived experience of the character tho because it will heavily influence the the way they dress up.
The way she smiled like crazy when speaking about Mulan’s dress made me so happy 💕✨🥰❤️🌈☀️💫
2:27 I'd LOVE to see a TED-talk where you explain why mulan was the most groundbreaking disney princess of her time.
The way they get so excited to talk about Mulan and the 1920’s is so cute omg
I am very certain that Disney knew in every occasion what the historical accurate look would have been and they consciously decided to go for princess vibes over realism because the young girls watching wouldn’t know. I was nine when tangled came out and Rapunzels dress was probably what I imagined someone from that time period to wear.
Edit: I also remember how surprised I was by the story since I am from Germany and grew up with Grimm’s fairy tales which actually aren’t too family friendly.
True! As a child, I loved the subtle influences of cultures, but I know they weren’t 100% accurate.
I could be entirely off base if Rapunzels dress isn’t even Renaissancey.
yeessssssssssssssssssssssss
i also thought that it was set in italy, not germany
@@eilio639 i think the first time the story was "printed" it was made by an italian. One year later a french women wrote it as well. And then the Brüder Grimm put it in their story-collection.
@@AgentSteffi oh, thank
Is the dress tiana wears in “almost there” historically accurate? Personally that’s my favourite dress in the film (although the green one slaps)
Ik she didn’t look at any of her other outfits which were veryyyyy accurate
sort of. her hair is very appropriate for the 20's but the dress would've had a drop waist. it's mainly the silhouette that isn't accurate to the era.
i don't get why disney makes historically accurate side outfits but not the main outfit
lil lemon boi probably, merchandising. If you need to make a bunch of copies for kids you want something pretty easy to wear and kind of modern.
Gabsterr ._. she said at the beginning she would only rank the marketing dress.
I love Rapunzel and her dress so much. The reason it wasn't historically accurate is because well ... she didn't know anything about the outside world so how could it have even been accurate. And she made her own dress so it's not like she bought it from a store where they had historically accurate clothes. I love her dress and her so much. ♥️😂
Merida’s sleeves look like they’re tied on, rather than slashed- at the elbow area, IMO.
They may have been, honestly. Separate sleeves. I’m pretty sure that was a thing.
Waifu #1
That was the other dress- we’re talking about her main one
bro you're SO PRETTY! your aesthetic, your voice, your intelligence, your clothes, your face, your vibes are just like immaculate. i'd love if u could do a video at some point about ur own personal style cus its just so unique and beautiful (like a lookbook or even a grwm!! totally up to you) tyy love this channel

okay hear me out, shes one of my new favorite youtubers. the editing, the comedy, the amount of research, her VOICE, and her makeup?! girl you have all my views
Seeing as Norse history expert Jackson Crawford was consulted for Frozen, it doesn't surprise me that the clothes (at least the non-magical clothes) were pretty accurate.
I love this series! So well researched and you are so respectful when explaining all the different outfits some of the best videos I have watched in ages☺️☺️
Just in case anyone wanted this, heres the order of the Princesses based on her rankings.
Jasmine and Pocahontas 1/10
Ariel 2/10
Rapunzel 2.5/10
Belle 3.5/10
Elsa 5/10
Cinderella and Tiana 5.5/10
Snow White 6/10
Merida and Anna 6.5/10
Moana 7.5/10
Mulan 8.5/10
I think its a reasonable detail to have her in commoners clothing rather than what she was supposed to wear, since her entire story arc is about not being who she's "supposed" to be
the moana accuracy was spot on
✨✨✨✨✨✨ as someone whos multipoly person (🇹🇴🇼🇸🇹🇰) i am very thankful that you took time to grasp that she was a mixture of polynesian traditional wear THANK YOU SO MUCH UWUlove from new zealand

@@a_teal_tears she said that in this video as well, but yea
the whole concept of the movie is vastly historically inaccurate and it makes no sense, i think the fashion is the last worry there.. but she is gorgeous and it's a very enjoyable movie, it's disney after all, what do we expect.
