When the theater heard “I am your father”, everyone gasped in shock and horror. At the time, it was believed that Luke’s father and Anakin Skywalker were different people. Some believed Obi-Wan was Luke’s father and some believed his father died a long time ago. There were people shouting things such as “No!” and some fans were booing Vader.
I was 8 years old when I saw ESB in the theater. I refused to believe it until I saw Return of the Jedi, 3 years later. I thought Vader was trying to use the force to manipulate Luke. I’m in my 50’s, ESB is still my favorite film of all time. Seeing people, young and old, react to this scene for the first time brings me so much joy.
What’s a lot of people don’t realize is Vader could absolutely kill Luke at anytime, he’s just toying with him. It’s only when Luke gets a lucky hit on Vader’s arm is when Anakin is like “ok time to teach this kid a lesson” and takes his hand off no problem.
@@elzibiel Yeah, it tends to be sociopaths and the like who can't grasp that Vader was just a horrifically scarred, miserable shell of a man that only projected confidence, and his son's unconditional love gave him the courage to finally break the dysfunctional slave-master relationship he had with Sidious.

David Prowse played Darth Vader in the original trilogy. James Earl Jones provided the voice for the character. Hayden Christensen in the prequel trilogy was Anakin Skywalker who became Darth Vader.
Yeah it feels weird to me whenever I see people who've never seen any of them, I was born in '90 and the original trilogy were some of my favourite movies to watch on VHS, and saw all the prequels as they got released in cinemas.
I'm a little skeptical about 2 things 1:) This twist has been the forefront of pop culture for decades, and I have a hard time believing a lot of these reactors didn't know 2:) People in the comments saying they saw this in the theaters and everyone was super shocked. In reality, this twist was panned when it happened. Empire Strikes Back got the prequel treatment when it was released and this twist actually turned people off. It took a few years and ROTJ for people to come around on Empire strikes back, so I also have a hard time believing people in the comments talking about how they saw this in the theaters. It's like 20 years from now, everyone saying Attack of the Clones is the best star wars movie and how everyone who saw it in the theaters couldn't believe what happened and they were in shock. Did everyone who saw empire in the theaters just forget how much it was initially panned and disliked?
Sort of. You have to remember most people commenting were kids when they saw this in the theater, so they weren't into all the reviews and there was no internet so it didn't disseminate like it does now. Also, this scene did genuinely shock people; I think what threw a lot of people off about the movie was the Empire winning, which just didn't really happen at that time.
These reaction videos are so hilarious! I never acted that way when I saw this in the theater. Maybe it's because I'd read science fiction for decades before this and that prepared me for such surprises.
"I am your father" is perhaps the single most famous line in all of cinema. At least in the Western world. I'm always surprised to see people who are shocked to find out about it. A few of them even seemed to know the line, but just never put two and two together until they saw the actual scene.
I will 100% say that Duaffy has the best reaction to this, especially considering the order that she watched the entire Star Wars saga in (1, 2, 4, 5, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9).
I was in the theatre for this. The whole place gasped over that. It was THE culturally defining moment. So much so that it’s STILL going all these decades later….
In the 80s, 2 movies stunned audiences causing them to be speechless when they left the theater: Empire Strikes Back (Darth Vader's revelation) and Wrath of Khan (Mr. Spock's death).
I was born 3 weeks after A new Hope. I knew that movie @ age 5 due to HBO. I was just about to turn 6 when RotJ came out & saw it in the theaters. Um, I never saw Empire. I didn’t understand why Han was in this slab.
Most people were those who were never interested in star wars or are people who were born after the fashion passed and now they only see them in a specific order.
I was five when I started getting into Star Wars. Unfortunately before seeing this someone let it slip that Darth Vader is “Skywalker’s father.” Even so, I was still blown away by the delivery of this line.
By the time Empire was released we were told James Earl Jones played the voice of Darth Vader, while others did the character motions, including the fighting.
Kind of sad, really. They told David Prowse (the man in the suit) they were going to add the audio later, but they didn't tell him it was not going to be him.
Robot chicken has one where they actually sit down to a cup or coffee and a smoke, and Vader keeps dropping all the Clone wars lore amd Truth bombs, and then once he tries to explain Metachlorions Luke calls him crazy and just walks away 😂😂😂
As a long time Fan and me growing up with this movie. I think is hillarious to see the younger generatioins reaction to this iconic line and reveal. Amazing to see the reaction still strong till this day...Original trilogy rules baby!!!!
This scene... this one, singular scene.... this was the moment that got me into Star Wars. In episode IV, when Owen says he's afraid Luke will end up like his father, we the audience are left to believe that Luke will die at the hands of Vader. But this new context adds a huge layer on everything. Owen is afraid Luke will turn to the dark side.
This is what I would use to describe [to young people] what this video is about (without mentioning Star Wars) : " *Me:* Shrek is green....." *Audience:* "OH MY GOOOAWWWRRDD!!!!"
EVERYONE KNOWS THIS LINE. Even if you’ve never seen Star Wars, you know this line. Respect to the reactors that acknowledged it. The ones that acted surprised are straight up acting. Maybe not all but there’s a few that are clear acting. I only say this because it’s the most famous line/movie scene of all time.
There are several vids of parents showing Star Wars to their kids (usually ages 5 to 8 or so) for the first time and their reactions are epic when they find out Darth is Luke's father. You should add their's too.
This is why Star Wars should be watched starting with Episode 3, in the order of the theatrical releases. You miss out on this moment watching from Ep. 1.
This video is like saying to the 'younglings': "You know the movie 'Back To The Future'? .... Well, it turns out it's a movie about time-travel...." **Audience/listeners faint*
Even though this movie came out in the 70s this younger generation never knew Luke's father only in memes or other television shows. But back then the public was so amazed at the Darth Vader and Luke characters George Lucas decided to do a back story of the origins of Darth Vader.
Back in 1980, we all thought Vader was lying. No one believed it. It wasn't until Return of the Jedi, three years later, that we learned the truth. That was a bitch of a wait.

my cousin didn't know it, lol
Makes it for a better viewing with them not knowing anything
Yeah I don't buy it
How many movies have you watched that are 20 or 30 years older than you?
9:45 Yes that was Hayden Christianson playing Darth Vader in 1977. The force is a powerful thing. 🙄😂
I saw what you did.
1980 actually. A New Hope came out in 1977.
David Prowse played Darth Vader in the original trilogy. James Earl Jones provided the voice for the character. Hayden Christensen in the prequel trilogy was Anakin Skywalker who became Darth Vader.
I''m beginning to think my sarcastic writing tone needs work. 😆
@@31webseriesuse the 'sarcasm' font next time....that will help
RIP to James Earl Jones!
Constant feels for like 10 mins. So many memories.
how this could be a surprise to anyone with a pulse is beyond me...literally one of the most quoted movie lines ever
None of these people saw the prequels as kids? m EDIT, they probably weren't even born yet. 1999 does NOT seem like 25 years ago! LOL
They'll think they're good actors
Yeah it feels weird to me whenever I see people who've never seen any of them, I was born in '90 and the original trilogy were some of my favourite movies to watch on VHS, and saw all the prequels as they got released in cinemas.
This whole scene is full of iconic lines.
I'm a little skeptical about 2 things
1:) This twist has been the forefront of pop culture for decades, and I have a hard time believing a lot of these reactors didn't know
2:) People in the comments saying they saw this in the theaters and everyone was super shocked.
Did everyone who saw empire in the theaters just forget how much it was initially panned and disliked?
so you think everyone is lying? brother what are you yapping about
@@kaijuwarrior8917 Not everyone is lying. But maybe 90% are. And that is probably a low estimate.
Another reason Rey can't be a Skywalker... She still had both hands at the end of her trilogy.
That's true. Definitely a Skywalker tradition.
Empire was my first time seeing Star Wars back in the day at 9 or 10 years old and that scene blew my mind .
How is posible that exist so many people that don't khow the "i am your father" scene? I khow about in years before seen the movie 😂😂😂
Good compilation of reactors. Yes, this is one of the most powerful scenes in cinema. They don't make them like this anymore.
3:25 This is why Vader sounded so pissed off in the original version of this movie when he said “Bring my shuttle!” 😤
When I first saw this scene when I was five, I couldn’t believe it. I thought Vader was lying. 😂
I was born 3 weeks after A new Hope. I knew that movie @ age 5 due to HBO. I was just about to turn 6 when RotJ came out & saw it in the theaters. Um, I never saw Empire. I didn’t understand why Han was in this slab.
Happened to me with pirates of the Caribbean, I saw the 1rst, then forced to watch the 3rd and since then I never liked too much that franchise 😅
Tha't kinda funny. No disrespect intended.
Popcorn In Bed: I did not see that coming! Me: Neither did Luke!
RIP James Earl Jones
Great idea for videos. I love it. Ill subscribe.
Every time the reactors say "I did not see that coming" after the hand amputation, I think of Anchorman.
Are these people for real? ALL true Star Wars fans know the story of the Chosen One, Anakin Skywalker.
I refuse to believe that there are modern adults who do not know about this scene.
I always wonder: under what rock have people been living if they don't know Darth vader is Luke's father?
I was 3 or 4 years old I cried when Luke's hand was sliced.
I watch this in cinema a lifetime ago.
In a galaxy far, far away.
Biggest twist in cinema history!
Yes, most of the reactors are very young😅
I don't know if George did the Daddy plot twist first, but he certainly did it best.
The fact some of them didn’t know that is so crazy
That is like Hitler saying that he is your father
Element when this film came out the internet wasn’t around for spoilers
Vader: i am your father
Luke: NUH UH🗿🗿
James Earl Jones as Darth Vader and Luke's old man hell yes
EVERYONE KNOWS THIS LINE. Even if you’ve never seen Star Wars, you know this line. Respect to the reactors that acknowledged it. The ones that acted surprised are straight up acting. Maybe not all but there’s a few that are clear acting. I only say this because it’s the most famous line/movie scene of all time.
What a view to have.
He was Leia's(?) father also. Luke and her are brother & sister.
The Naveed inclusion is too good man, love it
There are several vids of parents showing Star Wars to their kids (usually ages 5 to 8 or so) for the first time and their reactions are epic when they find out Darth is Luke's father. You should add their's too.
This is why Star Wars should be watched starting with Episode 3, in the order of the theatrical releases. You miss out on this moment watching from Ep. 1.
When they filmed it the line said was "Obi-Wan killed your father." Only George Lucas, Irvin Kershner and Mark Hamill knew the true line.
This video is like saying to the 'younglings': "You know the movie 'Back To The Future'? .... Well, it turns out it's a movie about time-travel...."
**Audience/listeners faint*
Even though this movie came out in the 70s this younger generation never knew Luke's father only in memes or other television shows. But back then the public was so amazed at the Darth Vader and Luke characters George Lucas decided to do a back story of the origins of Darth Vader.
Back in 1980, we all thought Vader was lying. No one believed it. It wasn't until Return of the Jedi, three years later, that we learned the truth. That was a bitch of a wait.
Best one was from justtrustash, because they were LITERALLY one of the only ones who DIDN'T know beforehand. 😂
When Luke screams out Nooooooooo, its so heartbreaking of him realizing that Darth Vader is his father 😮😮😮
Okay seeing my favorite Indian reactors in reactor comps has me sent.
holy shit they've made it. I am so fucking happy for them! They've made it!
Imo, this is the greatest sequel of all time. May the force be with you all.
"that's why he was taking it easy on him!" meanwhile...him taking it easy: cuts Luke's hand off
i am now a huge fan of Just Trust Ash…best duo
