"Let me look on you.. with my OWN eyes." If you look deeper into this.. Anakin basically spent his entire life looking at things through someone elses eyes. He was a slave and had to do what his master wanted in his perspective. With the Jedi, he still had a master and he was told to view things on a specific way. Then he turned to the dark side, and viewed the galaxy as his Emperor saw fit. In this moment.. the one moment in his life.. where he wanted to look on his son through his own eyes rather than through the eyes of others. In this moment, he was TRULY free.
This is where you realize that Vader didn't wear that mask just to look intimidating, he needed it to survive. Him asking Luke to remove it shows he knew he was about to die so in a way he wanted to die as Anakin Skywalker rather than Darth Vader.
This moment was what the title "Return of the Jedi" meant. In this moment, Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith no longer existed and Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker was reborn.
Darth Vader is like Frankenstein. George Lucas built him with David Prowse's body, James Earl Jones's voice, Sebastian Shaw's face, and Bob Anderson's lightsaber skills. The best iconic movie villain.
He did all the films well no doubt I remember getting the CD for return of the Jedi in 1983 for Christmas, but they didn’t have the music with the Orchestra. I think they have it on there now at the end of the Luke v Vader duel.
I remember being in the theater in 1983 watching this. Throughout the entirety of the original series, Darth Vader was the most despised villain ever, and then Return of the Jedi happens. In a moment of love for his son, Anakin attacks & kills the Emperor, knowing full well what would happen to him, and totally redeems himself. And then Luke removes his helmet, allowing the audience to see what was beneath for the first time. And then Darth Vader is gone, and despite being a hated villain for years, the entire theater was stunned into silence. No cheers, no applause, just a moment of profound sadness knowing that Anakin had finally redeemed himself.

Vader has been a prisoner in that suit for twenty years, even though it was the only thing which kept him alive and kicking. I can only imagine the overwhelming relief he must have felt knowing that he was dying and was finally going to be free and no longer trapped.
In a way, this brought the Chosen One prophecy to fruition. Darth Vader died so Anakin could be reborn, even for a brief time, to defeat Emperor Palpatine.
Darth Vader is a cultural icon, favorite bad guy for all, and known in practically every country in the world. He directly helped kill millions of innocent people and betrayed many others. A very tragic character. But in that moment of redemption, Luke just wanted to be with his dad.

Such a powerful scene. For 3 movies, Vader is built up as this inhumanly powerful, unstoppable, cruel, twisted, evil monster, and you're lead to believe he's going to look the part from the minute he steps onto the Tantive IV in Episode IV and effortlessly picks up a grown man by his neck, with one hand, and lifts him 3 feet off the ground up until the very end when Luke severs his hand and it's clear that his arm was robotic. What's he going to look like? Is he going to be some huge, jacked up warrior? Is he just a robot under there? Then Luke removes his mask, and he's just a sad, broken old man. Absolutely amazing writing and the exact right way to go with this scene. If he had been anything but a broken old man, this scene wouldn't have had nearly the impact.

After 47 years this scene still gets me. Because no one truly understands the power of the love between Father and son. Just like most people don't understand the power between the love of a mother and a daughter! That's what makes this movie series and trilogies so amazing. Luke was everything his father wasn't. If you've ever read shadows of the empire where Darth Vader openly states that his son is more powerful than he ever was he's more powerful than Yoda. The book The Shadow of the empire is in between episode 5 and 6 and that's where Vader claims that his son is the most powerful Jedi to ever live! Which frightens him and makes him well up with pride for his son! That's how you know that Luke was the chosen one not Anakin!
