Fascinating, it's incredible to hear more about stories of Hermaeus Mora. The story of Ysgramor and the Hare was particularly interesting. Thank you for the video!
I'd imagine being Dragonborn, an aspect of Akatosh, an Aedra, you'd be immune or heavily resistant to the effects of Daedric Princes, Miraak didn't go insane, despite everything, neither did Durnehviir, though he was forever linked to the Soul Cairn. What I think Mora was banking on was the inherent greed of a Dragon Soul, the want to be the strongest, rather than thinking that he can break Miraak or the LDB mentally. What is more enticing to someone looking to power than an infinite library? Mora doesn't need to drive a Dragonborn insane, just offer promise of more knowledge, which is something he can do.
Paarthurnax: you feel it too, don't you? The desire for power, for conquest. I would not trust another dovah, even now, not a day goes by that I don't consider going back to my old ways.

*Average citizen of Tamriel:* is that a black book? *AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I'M GOING INSAAAAAAAAAANE!* *The Dovakiin:* Yeah only like... Two of those books were good. The rest were boring as hell.
Insanity is just the sane reaction to living in a universe filled with temporal paradoxes, petty dick gods, time braking outright every few millenia or so, rampent demon invasions which is all just some incoherent dream of some brain dead omnipotent godhead doomed to end when it wakes up.
“For in much wisdom there is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.” Ecclesiastes 1:18. I know this quote is not from the Elder Scrolls universe, but I still find this VERY relevant to Hermaeus Mora’s sphere.
Wisdom is the balancing tool. Life is all about balance. Everything there is are all made up of different elements balanced together in in a myriad of different ways. We are the universe experiencing itself. We are life trying to get itself right. This is the reason for evolution.
I'm really looking forward to the Daedric content that ES6 has. I think it would be cool if they had them more fleshed out than just one quest per lord for a relic. Imagine being able to devote yourself to the lords instead of just "becoming a champion" like the option to do more quests for perks or other gear that aren't relics, etc. Would make role-playing much more interesting
Allow me to recommend Wintersun: Faiths of Skyrim to you then, as it allows you to do just that to any of Tamriel's known deities and perform quests for some of them
So in my most recent playthrough of Skyrim, I was using the Sallow Regent quite a bit to optimize my alchemy/enchanting leveling up loop. (not the resto loop, because there is no point to use the books then). And I noticed, that as I was sitting in my basement within the home in Solstheim, that after I came out of the book, the Sallow Regent background noise followed me into the real world. That sort of...not-quite-moaning, not-quite-scratching noise... Like a hum of insanity that you definitely hear while in Apocrypha. The sound loop stopped as soon as I left the house instance. and went outside. I'm not sure if it was a glitch I had or not, but it definitely added to my immersion. Another time this happened is I went back into the Waking Dreams book after defeating Miraak (while outside in Solstheim) to reset some perk points, and when I came back out, Solstheim's sky resembled that of the green-webbed sky that hung above Apocrypha. No tentacles, but very disconcerning. Again, went away after I loaded into something else, like if I fast-traveled to Tel Mythrin or somewhere in Skyrim. And, again, I'm not sure if this is a glitch or intended, but it definitely added to the immersion that the dragonborn was becoming more and more insane the more he used these books. Someone (*cough cough* Fudgemuppet, if you're reading this) should load up a playthrough and report back if they notice the same thing.
Those who walk his halls are truly blessed. Even as their flesh falls away, they are permitted to browse the infinite tomes and scrolls, privy to all mysteries that have ever and will ever exist. It is the most blessed of fates.
*Laughs in uber sadistic vampire lord, inside a corpse riddeld whiterun, wearing the ebony mail, posing before a blood red sun * Yeah, as though there was any sanity remaining. Hold on to my Ebony blade for a moment, while i eat some corpses to regain health for a bit.
Considering the fact that canonically the Dragonborn has Waking Dreams in their possession, and that at some point they must've read it, does that mean that it's possible that they might've achieved CHIM?
@@purpledevilr7463 That may not be necessarily true as we have access to console commands after becoming/mantling Sheogorath in Oblivion even though it has been implied to be impossible for a Daedric Prince to achieve CHIM.
I would assume the Oghma Infinium, while not directly causing madness itself, could easily lead to it through obsession. Someone reads one section, it disappears, and the power it grants them drives them to search for it, desperate to obtain the knowledge of the other sections, and pretty much wasting their life searching for something that is now kept forever beyond their reach.
I still remember the "Doors of Oblivion" book *very* fondly. It's what launched my obsession with ES-lore & Herma Mora himself. I still feature that book in every house, in every playthru. I later found out that the master spoken of in that book actually has a tower in Morrowind with a hidden cellar.
It's fun to make deals with the gods, using your soul as currency, when you've already pledged your soul to the god of your choice. It's why being a werewolf is so dang cool, because you'll spend eternity experiencing the thrill of the hunt, and all these other gods who thought they were so clever as to dupe you into agreeing to give them your soul. How disappointed they will be when you die and get whisked away to Hircine's side, if he was the first of them you pledged your soul to, lol. Better yet, the Dragonborn masters the mysterious artifact known only as the "Tilde Key," and becomes truly immortal, never dying, and thus never having to make good on these contracts with the gods.
Boring!!!! I prefer spending my eternity in the Shivering Isles, but at last I am Dragonborn so my soul automatically ends up with Akatosh. I could dream though. Then again it is said that Sheogorath is the most powerful of deities, he'll figure out how to steal my soul from the others.
If the book will allow me to skip old Hermaeus’ dialogue, then insanity is a worthy price. Plus it’d probably get a ticket to the shivering isles pro bono!
My current character defeated alduin, slayed Harkon and Bested Miraak, but the black books drove him mad, he joined the Dark Brotherhood after swearing fealty to an Empire that he has just helped reunite the whole of Skyrim, with each contract he started to like the killing he only partook in once to uphold justice. With each quest eventually leading him to assassinate the very emperor he swore allegiance to by name. Eventually on a quest for every Dragon soul to fuel his growing he killed Paarthunax and now plots to terrorize Skyrim with the power of his unlimited Thu'um.
Hermaeus Mora had of course wanted the Black Books to be found and their temptation felt once more in Tamriel. Yet for all his supposed wisdom, the Daedric prince believed naively that any mere mortal would simply desire to keep them and accept their gifts. Having brought all of the Black Books to Tel Mithryn, Neloth and I hatched a plan to outwit these designs. I donned Ahzidal's boots of waterwalking, and set off for Vvardenfell alone. Trekking through that desolate ashscape, I looked up towards my looming destination. The climb was arduous, the heat unbearable, and the acrid fumes stung my eyes and burned my throat. Finally, I reached the summit and peered down into the crater, shielding my eyes from the intense volcanic glare. Then I hurled each abominable tome into the fires of Red Mountain, beyond the reach of mer and man and also, I hoped, of the daedric denizens of Oblivion. --- Add bBorderRegionsEnabled=0 in the [General] section in Skyrim.ini to visit Red Mountain showinventory (to find ids with Dragonborn load order in place of xx) player.removeitem xx01e99c 1 player.removeitem xx01e99d 1 player.removeitem xx01e99e 1 player.removeitem xx01e99f 1 player.removeitem xx016E2c 1 player.removeitem xx016E2d 1 player.removeitem xx016E22 1
Wait so why hasn't Hermaeus Mora achieved Chim or experienced Zero Sum? If he truly had all forbidden knowledge, then why hasn't he used chim to shape the god heads dream or disappear? This is a lore question that has bothered me
based on what happened with lorkhan, it's likely that gods (not semi gods like the tribunal, proper gods like the aedra and daedra) can't achieve CHIM or zero sum
I think we can all agree the Dragonborn is either completely immune to pacts with Deadra, OR that there’s going to be a Deadra war when he dies for who gets to claim his soul.
I’ve always looked at Chim and Zero Summing not to be taken that it’s literally a god head dreaming, but more symbolic and metaphorical. The “head” is actually a computer, and the dream, is the game. Zero summing occurs when you get bored of the game and stop playing. Chim occurs when you use cheats and mods to manipulate the game to your liking. Doing either requires full acknowledgment that it’s a fictional world. I think it’s a nice metaphor and the fact that characters in the game can do it is really mind blowing and meta to think about
See, it's talk like this that makes me dream of Skyrim builds for the disciples of the Princes. Can you imagine the backstory that they could create for a devotee of Herma Mora, Sheogorath, Peryite, Molag Bal, JYGGALAG?! Sometimes I watch the builds not for how to play them, but simply to enjoy the in-depth backstories, they are just that good.
I can only imagine herma mora and Sheogorath being best of friends, they're probably the only ones that can understand eachother, and there is a large crossover between their worshipers
In my opinion, the Last Dragonborn should get a choice on which Daedric Prince they want to spend eternity with! That battle over the Last Dragonborn's soul will be a sight to see! As me and Sheogorath disappear into the Shivering Isles in a cloud of butterflies, while Sheo is laughing his ass off! Hircene:'F@! The Mad God did it to me again!' Hermaeus:' What did you expect?' Hircene:' You only say that because you think you know everything!' The majority of the Princes:' OH S@! Here we go!' Molag, Mehrunes, and Malacath:' This should be fun!' Clavicus Vile:' I'm out of here! Come, Barbas!' Sanguine:' You know where to find me!' The others:' Duh, you are Sheogorath's BFF!'
I’ve met multiple Dahdra and basically bad-mouthed each and every one. They didn’t like me much, but I was on a personal quest to collect, and well, still haven’t defeated the main quest, but I did do the vampire quest, if just to keep NPCs safe from random attacks.
Hermaeus Mora puts His tentacles into your mind, like black fingers reaching in to scramble your thoughts, turning you into a vegetable. But a complicated vegetable, or a cacophony of vegetables, like a salad. So you could call Hermaeus Mora's tentacles, salad fingers.
Thanks for the warning man, I was going to buy one and read it glad I now know how dangerous they are I'm going to boycott the publisher writer and the business that have these books and I urge other to do the same
I once had something weird happen during a play-through on Solthsteim. After reading more than 5 black books, ending at whatever # in Neloth's house, I stepped outside and.... Solstheim's sky looked like Apocrypha's sky for a second or two, then changed back; it went from that bright slimy green back to normal. I want to think it wasn't a glitch, but I don't know! It's like I could gradually be getting bound to Apocrypha like Miraak was.
HAH! Jokes on you! I'm already a champion of every other deadric lord, and its only been a month! Now I'll go for the aidra! Hahaha when I'm done the world will tear itself asunder to determine my afterlife! Talos may be my lord but it is purely for he offers the best opportunity for my peoples survival, I defy all powers higher then mortal they all play to my game! When my power grows beyond all and my people know an eternal paradise only then will I die and with my death the uncaring, the harmful, the not essential gods shall fall, all shall know my name! Tim!!! MWUAHAHAHAHA!!!!
My headcanon in my play through was that my Dragonborn escaped his oath with Hermaeus via his allegiance to Azura and resides in her domain until he had gained enough power to return to Tamriel and keep Hermaeus from trying to enact his will over him

There's no help for it. The Dragonborn must choose: either to let Miraak return to Nirn and bollix things up, or read at least two Black Books to learn how to defeat him. Perhaps it helps that the Dragonborn isn't much of a scholar. He/she is restless. Footloose. Never stays for long in one place. Always is questing. He/she lacks the patience for a years-long retreat to a magnificent, if dangerous, library to catch up on the latest histories or philosophical musings or godly secrets. A library for the Dragonborn is just a place to visit. He/she feels no temptation to stay. I'm reminded of Chevy Chase in 'National Lampoon's Vacation,' where Chevy is at the Grand Canyon, but in a hurry. His head bobs up and down twice. Yep, nice view! Let's go! Nary a glance does he spare for the sight of mules descending to the river along winding trails, nor of dozens, nay, hundreds of ancient layers of rock piled up like a nearly infinite wedding cake, all telling their stories of aeons past, nor of hawks soaring high overhead, nor the sun casting brilliance and stark shadows into the incredible colored vista. There is no temptation in it for him. Is the Dragonborn that shallow? Yeah. He/she kind of is, because every player is. None of us would find fun in lingering in Hermaeus Mora's realm for long. Things to do, places to see! Kill the monsters, collect the loot, and away! And so perhaps the Black Books aren't as dangerous to the Dragonborn as they might be to a more studious fellow or gal. Remember the killing joke? Those who hear it die of laughter. But the person with no sense of humor is immune. To him or her, it's just not funny. Hermaeus Mora's trap is sprung. The Dragonborn read the Black Books. But the lure of those endless stacks in Hermaeus Mora's library is impotent against the restless adventurer. He, or she, doesn't get the joke.
The last time I played a heroic dragonborn character he kind of pulled a Sisyphus and made a pact with the dark daedra princes to acquire immeasurable power. Only to turn on them and use the power to thwart them and save Tamriel while killing all evildoers.
Hermaeus mora is one of my favorite daedric princes. He's not really evil but definitely not good, he provides very powerful knowledge but at a very costly price, usually your sanity, soul, or other. This is also why i like sheogorath and sanguine, they're chaotic neutral and really don't align themselves with good nor technically evil, simply out for themselves and their own amusement. I guess you could say that for alot of the daedric princes but there are some blatant evil ones like molag bal, bohethia, and mehrumes dagon. And good ones like meridia and azura. I just really like the neutral and chaotic daedric princes.
Eh, even Dagon isn't necessarily evil. You'd want him supporting a revolt against a true tyrant like Star Wars' Palpatine, would you not? Dagon has his uses
I imagine the Dragonborn being shaken by Apocrypha, and sometime after defeating Miraak he/she decides he will slay every dragon and absorb every soul, so that he is in fact the last Dragonborn (it’s based in good intentions but disfigured into fear, pride and hate), culminating maybe in Parthunax death or escape. Becoming High King of Skyrim in the end, or maybe emperor... and then, to end his tyranny, comes from Akivir, the Neravarine!

Only with hermaeus mora its the other way around, you suffer by aquiring knowledge where normally you aquire wisdom by suffering
Wisdom is the balancing tool. Life is all about balance. Everything there is are all made up of different elements balanced together in in a myriad of different ways. We are the universe experiencing itself. We are life trying to get itself right. This is the reason for evolution.

Yes. It’s called Console commands. Or Modding.

It's why being a werewolf is so dang cool, because you'll spend eternity experiencing the thrill of the hunt, and all these other gods who thought they were so clever as to dupe you into agreeing to give them your soul. Better yet, the Dragonborn masters the mysterious artifact known only as the "Tilde Key," and becomes truly immortal, never dying, and thus never having to make good on these contracts with the gods.

Me: I'm already there, so....nothing to lose?

Sum? If he truly had all forbidden knowledge, then why hasn't he used chim to shape the god heads dream or disappear?
This is a lore question that has bothered me
based on what happened with lorkhan, it's likely that gods (not semi gods like the tribunal, proper gods like the aedra and daedra) can't achieve CHIM or zero sum
I think we can all agree the Dragonborn is either completely immune to pacts with Deadra, OR that there’s going to be a Deadra war when he dies for who gets to claim his soul.
Fudge :Black books causes insanity
Me: have you ever voted in among us
Oh
I’ve always looked at Chim and Zero Summing not to be taken that it’s literally a god head dreaming, but more symbolic and metaphorical. The “head” is actually a computer, and the dream, is the game. Zero summing occurs when you get bored of the game and stop playing. Chim occurs when you use cheats and mods to manipulate the game to your liking. Doing either requires full acknowledgment that it’s a fictional world. I think it’s a nice metaphor and the fact that characters in the game can do it is really mind blowing and meta to think about

Reading a black book might explain the insanity of the last 4 years
There's no help for it.
Whats crazy is how much parallels there are with The Elder Scrolls lore and Real world lore
That's really cool, I'd love to see a breakdown on all of the black books!
It's amazing that it's almost been a decade and people are still exploring this game
My current dragonborn is a devout follower and champion of both Meridia and Azura. She cannot be corrupted!
Hermaeus mora discoves hard drives. Apocrypha becomes a couple of books and a wasteland.
We have the daughters of Coldharbour but we still need the daughters of Apocrypha.
Love seeing that you are still making content. All you videos are so interesting
**You found out a note in apocrypha**
"still trying to find lusty argonian maid vol 3"
I honestly believe that once the quests were done Akatosh allowed the Dragonborn death. His soul was not human. It was a dragon, the body a shell.
I would like to see that Elf try
My skooma fueled power is a force that even old man Sheo fears
