    In our latest Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim video we delve into the Godhead, CHIM, Zero-Sum and Amaranth.
    Dragonbreaks: • The MOST Confusing Con...
    Alessian Order: • Skyrim - The Alessian ...
    The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open world action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth main installment in The Elder Scrolls series, following The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 11, 2011.
    The game's main story revolves around the player character and their quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The videogame is set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion, and takes place in the fictional province of Skyrim. Over the course of the game, the player completes quests and develops the character by improving skills. The game continues the open world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel anywhere in the game world at any time, and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely.

    Imagine you're lying down on your couch taking a nap. You're having a long and vivid dream about a vast universe filled with strange creatures. You've dreamed the entirety of countless generations and aweinspiring events, yet you have no control over what actually happens within the dream.
    Then suddenly a seemingly insignificant character within your dream looks directly at you and says "I know this is all your dream. I know I am not real. Now I am as real as you."
    I don't know about you, but that would put a quick end to my dream.

    • @tyjordan4101
      @tyjordan4101 5 ปีที่แล้ว +803

      Tonal architecture makes perfect sense now. When you speak a Thu'um, summon a sword by song, or play the various Dwemer "instruments", you are directly influencing the god-head's subconscious, thus altering the dream.
      Meddling with tonal architecture and achieving Chim could greatly disturb the dreamer, turning his dream into nightmare, or even worse, wake him up.

    • @tyjordan4101
      @tyjordan4101 5 ปีที่แล้ว +421

      It makes me wonder why Vivec disappeared. Did he get off his ego trip and zero sum? Did he intentionally leave because he knew his presence put the dream at risk? Or did he simply get bored and abandon the dream to go start his own?

    • @kaimagnus5760
      @kaimagnus5760 5 ปีที่แล้ว +618

      Vivec went to have his own dream about a prosperous technology driven world that had been unceremoniously regressed back into a primitive state by war. Aka Fallout. That dream has now turned into a nightmare as the massive use of mods and console commands has turned his dream into Fallout 76 and now he's rolling around mumbling "No, make it stop!" as he desperately tries to wake up. But he sadly can't go back to the dream he was once a part of so he's stuck with it.

    • @mercybellafiore3677
      @mercybellafiore3677 5 ปีที่แล้ว +230

      Vivec never Zero-summed, or at least not as we would think of it. The loveletter from the fifth era recalls Vivec's teachings and mentions that "twice Vehk" appeared from the Void after countless years. My best inference is that Vivec chose to leave the mortal world after Dagoth Ur died and met up with the old version of himself from the previous dream, reappearing to the mortals before the Landfall and intentionally causing a Dragon Break due to both Vivecs arriving at the same time. This would allow the loveletter to reach the Fourth Era and inform the mortals back then about how to avoid Landfall.
      If you don't know what I mean by all this, read through Kirkbride lore. I probably sound insane if you aren't knee deep in this already, lol

    This entire theory of the elder scrolls world, Nirn, being a dream brings up a bigger question. The Godhead is "dreaming" existence, when you dream you are still observing it usually through your own eyes. You see and interact with the inexistent world. Is it possible that the the Nerevarine, The Hero of Kvatch, and The Dragonborn, are all just how the Godhead observes and interacts within the dream?

    I like how CHIM, Zero Summing, and the Amaranth could be an actual philosophical idea IRL. The idea of a Dreamer-Creator God isn't unique to TES, Lovecraft's Azathoth is probably the best and foremost example of that.

    • @newbie504
      @newbie504 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      But this IS part of "real life": Hermeticism in particular follows the same philosophy as in we as creations of the ALL, a mind-like being that created everything to know itself in the process. The universe (or multiverse) is just the stage(s) for this experiment and every action, every decision adds to that. Our primary purpose is to achieve something like CHIM, the first step being the creation of the Astral Body, a body of light that can leave the boundaries of the physical plane and interact with the various beings (aedric and daedric alike) to expand our consciousness and refine the astral body until the diamond (or solar body in other sources) is achieved. In this state, we become Gods, part of the creation as rulers and creators ourselves, although it's impossible to exit this reality, because there is no existence beyond it. But we can choose to unite with the ALL though, something called mystical death, in which you zero-sum in a sense that your ego dissolves completely along with your individuality.

      Believe it or not but in Lovecraft's works its never actually said to us that Azathoth is a dreamer-creator god, its a myth based on the fact that Lovecraft's work is based on another authors where it does have a dreamer-creator god, although even then the supreme archetype makes more sense to be given that wrong title so how Azathoth got it, no idea

      Had my first lucid dream a few weeks ago, it was pretty shortlived but I enjoyed playing God for a little while. I levitated around mostly because I didn't know what else to do, and I knew that the dream would be shortlived. I imagine that's a bit how CHIM feels. You can do something useful, or you can just float around a bit because you're not the most creative god, and then decide "fuck it" and let yourself zero sum. • @Thecoochiemaster
    @Thecoochiemaster 3 ปีที่แล้ว +183

    I really like how actually applicable a philosophy this is. It's a combination of intrinsic valuation nihilism and taoism; achieving chim isn't actually knowing whether everything is objectively real or not real, but that it doesn't make a difference in what you are experiencing, what you're able to witness, understand, and interact with. If everything is fake, it doesn't make this apple in your hand feel any different, it doesn't make it taste any different. Knowing that the apple in your hand is fake when you hold and taste it, is indistinguishable from knowing that the apple in your hand is real when you hold and taste it. If we go the route like in men in black, where there's an entire universe in the gem hanging from the collar of a cat, does it matter that we're an entire subatomically sized universe dangling from the neck of a titan? We can't witness or interact with it in any way, so it is not our reality. You recognize this indifference between objective reality and illusion, and with it that you are a conscious and thinking being, capable of actions, thoughts, and feelings completely independent of the ultimate goal of reality around you which is entropy. You recognize that there is no absolute goal or objective, and the god-like powers of chim is representative of being able to create your own goals, objectives, and values for yourself. You get to decide what is worth working towards, as everything you work towards is observably reality by the only input of witnessing reality that is possible, and that is you. It's self-actualization. Now the cool part is that it tosses in something beyond self-actualization, which is ascending to a status of god-head, dreaming an entire reality; becoming the absolute power and creator of everything while not being conscious or in control of it in any significant way. This is you, recognizing yourself as an individual, but also recognizing that you are also inseparable of a greater order that is the natural dynamic of everything. You are both, in control of everything, and in control of nothing. An individual, but also indistinguishable from everything. So do what you want kids. If you want to help people and create a better world to perpetuate behavior that encourages others to do the same, so that everyone can have the most pleasant and beautiful version of this experience of a ride we call life, do it. If you want to focus on yourself and do what's best for you regardless of what others might think, more power to you. You are simultaneously the creator in a sandbox game, and a participant only able to experience and participate in that sandbox game at the same time. Sorry if this is stupid aha

      I think it’s supposed to be a metaphor for BGS and the former employees who build this world, actually. Because if you really think about it, TES (and every fictional universe ever made) are kind of like the dreams of those who make them. At one point the entirety of the elder scrolls only existed in a few people’s minds so it honestly makes perfect sense.
      However, I think we (the player character) achieve chim because we realize that what we’re playing is not real and it’s just a video game on a computer monitor.

    There's a theory that Lorkhan achieved CHIM, and almost achieved Amaranth, but decided to build Mundus as a way of showing other beings how to achieve it. The patterns and structures of the universe are replicated on a smaller scale on Nirn: the wheel, the tower and so on, the path to CHIM laid out in hidden ways. But this required the various spirits to give up their power and immortality. The proud Daedra refused, instead building realms from themselves to rule over as gods. The Aedra sacrificed themselves, willingly or unwillingly depending on your interpretation, stabilising Mundus or becoming the mortal races while Magnus and the Magna-ge fled. The Eight held onto their power as much as they could, becoming, like the Daedra, gods of this new realm. But they cannot achieve CHIM in that state any more than the Daedra can. Proud "gods" obsessed with their worship unable to dream of anything beyond, while the mortals are the dreamers, the creators, the true inheritors of Lorkhan's legacy and knowledge. Tiber Septim, Vivec, and possibly the entire race of Dwemer achieved it, spitting in the faces of Aedra and Daedra alike.

    I had a dream like that once. I spent about 60 years in it. Lived each and every day, went to sleep and even dreamed. Saved the world, mastered magic, got married, had two kids, both boys, and built my own home on a hill in the woods with a perfect view of the three incredibly colorful moons of that world when the night sky was clear. I was sitting on my porch, reading, my wife was beside me, my eldest son was telling me he was finally getting married. I got so excited for him, I jumped up, waking from the dream. I wept. I had no wife, I had no sons, no home of my own either. I was a teenage kid. I didn't save the world, I didn't have any kids, my wife was never real, all the things I loved were nonexistent. I refused for a while to believe this life was the real one. I'd have gone back in a heartbeat if it were possible, to be with my family. Unfortunately, even in my dreams, I couldn't go back. I can't remember what any of their names were. Been decades now, still kinda hurts, but now in that nostalgic way, that makes you a mix of happy and sad.

    In this theory I would imagine the “gods” are the part of the godhead that would survive “waking up” which is why they don’t zero sum. Each “god”, daedra, aedra, etc is a different aspect of the mind of the godhead which means they can’t zero sum. Hermaeus Mora is memory and knowledge, Boethia the parts of the mind more selfish and plotting, so on and so forth.
    Perhaps those who achieve Kim rather than zero sum are the godhead lucid dreaming. It can get interesting.

      I believe they'd all survive, think about it like this, the "gods" hold so much power because they represent the largest cohesive 'chunks' of the divine dreamer's being. Still, the entirety of the dream is created in the mind and of the mind of the dreamer, from the smallest to the larges aspect, so although the placement of a grain of sand may not be as prominant in the near infinite consciousness that makes up the dreamer, it still plays a role in the whole of the dreamer's consciouness. I dont think anything 'dies' when the dreamer wakes, rather I think all that was in the dream merely 'changes' back into the form that it once held as a piece of the divine consciousness of the waking dreamer.

    My interpretation of CHIM and zero sum is that they are actually the same exact thing. The moment you realize that you are in the dream, you become the protagonist of said dream. The godhead himself manifests in your person, just like how when we dream we have a form within the dream, which is usually ourselves but not always. So the moment you realize you are in the dream, you gain the lucidity powers. Zero sum is what happens if your first thought upon realizing this is "that means I don't exist" because you essentially use your god powers to erase yourself. CHIM on the other hand is when you say "that means I am the manifestation of the godhead" and so you aren't deleted, you just gain absolute control over the dream.

Will you be someone that plays the game chaotically and unrealistically because you acknowledge it's a game and not real, essentially "zero-summing" your playthrough in the sense that it will be non canon to the larger series? Or will you look at this piece of obvious fiction, and in the face of that knowledge, still immerse yourself in the game and believe your character and the npcs are real, playing as the last dragonborn and having the power to reshape the world of the game as you see fit, essentially achieving CHIM? And in acknowledgement of the dwindling interest of gamers, eventually you'll lose interest in the game and your playthrough and move on to something else, as all who achieve CHIM do.

    When I was 12 I was walking up some stairs at my friends house and I began to wonder if reality was real. Felt like I was falling into the sky and I even though my eyes were looking at the steps it felt like I could barely see them. It was only small flight of stairs but it felt like 10 minutes. I couldn’t hear the words my friend was speaking or the world around me.
    One half of me was fully committed and wanted to see what would happen if I “fell” (metaphorically speaking). The other half was my self preservation instincts filling me with adrenaline and fear. The steps blurred, probably due to being on the brink of a panic attack, but it was like I stopped seeing the physical steps and instead I just saw them as fuzzy energy that hung directionless in space. More than that, it was like I could see the air between as atoms, and the ambient light bounced off everything like fluidic waves of particles.
    Then right as I felt like I was seeing through the illusion that is my perceptions, I hear my friend laugh after he cracks a joke, and just like that the moment was gone. I had to pretend like nothing happened, and although everything I was perceiving snapped back to normal in an instant, the concrete under my feet felt like aerogel.
    I’ll never forget that. The deep Elder Scrolls lore lets me revisit that experience. And after you look into this stuff you can’t help but wonder how you would handle the realisation that reality is just a dream, and if you’d zero sum or achieve CHIM. People (like Scott) think it’s a simple matter that comes naturally but actually your bodies natural response is self preservation. You don’t get to control that part. And “being okay with knowing you’re in the matrix” isn’t the same as suddenly falling into the sky as youre simultaneously coping with a paradigm shift AND trying to make sense of what you’re seeing.

      It's a bit unnerving, heartwarming and yet.. fascinating to hear someone had a similar experience.
      Experiences like that seem to stay with you.. changing a part of you as if that is etched onto your existence that normally wouldn't be.
      Isn't the elder scrolls and such just wonderful at pulling those experiences back?

    There's actually a theory and a piece of dialogue in Morrowind that states that your ability to save reload and start a new game is canon ability where you bend space and time to suit your needs. basically your some sort of immortal being that whenever you die you just you just change reality and go back to a different point in time to avoid death.

    I took a different message from the end of c0da - The highest awareness achievable is the realization that they are in a video game.
    Jubal Lun Suul, looking down at the remains of Nirn:
    "See there? That’s where all of us used to live. But not without a price. Dead language, old meaning: The Arena.
    "
    Notice the capitalization. Talos and the Dunmer used to live in The Arena - that is - TES I. Now they live in a rough draft of a comic book. Talos is referred to as TAL(OS), and as "a virus." Jubal is in a state of constant emerging realization of the medium in which he lives, which is why he can wield comic speech bubbles as a weapon.

      Its hinyed that the obersoul of Aka and Lor the very souls of Anu and Padomey fill the roles of the consciousness and Subconsciousness. The interplay between them giving form to all things in the say way of thoughts and instincts. But because they are so deeply tied to the Godhead Akatosh can not leave it Aka is the well "IS" the consciousness of the Godhead and the Godhead is its dream and its dream is creation.

    • @billfred9411
      @billfred9411 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@DracoSafarius The godhead is never directly mentioned but there's stuff in game that hint towards it and backs it up. The Thirty-Six Lessons of Vivec is telling you that reality is a dream and the only way to achieve Chim is to accept that and also have so much self worth that you still exist after fully understanding it.
      Heimskr in skyrim even takes a direct quote from the many-headed talos. The lore is a total mess when you dig deep but i think there's enough lore in games to say that it isn't all out of game lore.
