The thing is consistently beating the teams you theoretically should isn't easy (most managers actually dont do this) and actually makes you a good manager. Consistently beating the teams you shouldn't makes you an elite manager.

It’s a compliment to call Southgate an average manager because he’s far worse than that, let’s not forget this is the same guy who had us facing humiliation at the hands of Slovakia until an individual piece of brilliance from Bellingham bailed him out. Make no mistake we are in this position because of the incredible depth of talent we possess not because the manager is performing miracles. In fact I honestly believe Southgate is only getting about 60% out of what this squad is actually capable of.

You've got eyes but no memory of what used to be normal for England. An unhappy mess in the camp, division among players, tactically clueless, unable to cope with the pressure of knockout football. Southgate creates a unity and sense of shared purpose that is unique and unheard of in recent memory for england teams at tournaments. He's not Guardiola or Klopp, but how many of those are there in international football? Almost none.

Gareth and the players are the sum of their parts. Please, Keown, White, and any other silly sod thinking Southgate is more than an average manager, explain where he has affected change through team setup or tactical nous at any point in this tournament.
We have lucked our way through with big, late, and incredibly low xG goals that were individual brilliance more than well worked goals. Agreeably, the Watkins winner was well worked with Palmer, but as Simon said after the game, our expectations are so low that we think a basic midfield to attack pass that ends in a goal is earth shatteringly good.
We are defence merchants this tourney and have ridden our luck like no other team has. We're so imbalanced, with players on the bench that would give us 70% more in positions that hurt teams. Otherwise, it's all passing to feet, nothing through or over, and Jude is a complete passenger because Mainoo is playing the 6 and 8 role all by himself, and it's not being recognised.
Get Foden behind Kane for Jude, Palmer on the right, and Gordon on for Trippier. That team would give us so much more balance and attacking impetus it's untrue.

I don’t think Southgate is an average manager. He is a defensive, cautious, seasoned and wise tournament international manager. He’s a really good international manager and often good international managers don’t make good club managers and vice versa. He’s not the same manager that struggled at Middlesbrough. Southgate isn’t as bad as his critics say or as great as his fans say. This time last week people thought England would lose to Switzerland and this week it’s the eve of successive Euro finals and we’re talking knighthoods and top club jobs. Not average and not brilliant but damn good.

Whilst I dont think Southgates style of football is the most entertaining and he can be frustrating being reactive rather than proactive. He isnt average as you cant get to semi finals and finals of tournaments with just good players.... England have always had strong squads and we have never achieved the consistent levels of success as Gareth has.

Interestingly, I bumped into a West Ham fan earlier today and asked him if he would take Southgate at West Ham and he wouldn't, same goes for that Leeds fan who I used to work with last year.
The only reasons England have progressed deep into previous tournaments is all down to Favourable Draws and Home Advantage.

He was a safe pick by the FA after the Sam Allardyce debacle. This is easily one of England's greatest generation of players. Under a manager with a better tactical acumen, they would've won the last Euros and made the 2018 World Cup final, and dare I say could've won it. Just as they could've made it to the 2022 final. He's the epitome of a person who has failed forward. Just as Lampard, Gerrard and Rooney have done. He gets the credit for uniting the players. Not for his tactical nous. Folks need to calm down. England's progress has been in spite of Southgate, not because of him.

Keown is DELUSIONAL....If the team that finished the game against the Dutch had started the group games England would have racked up a fair few goals in the early stages and the football would have looked a lot more dynamic which would have then been something to build on moving forward. Instead, Keown thinks Southgate is a genius because his undervalued bench bailed him out.
