  • In 2008 I trained in Thailand for 10 weeks. The last two weeks of my trip was spent with Buakaw as he prepared for his upcoming K-1 fight.
In this episode I share what type of person he is and breakdown what I learnt training along side him.

I went to train at banchamek gym when it was still in Bangkok and buakaw was so nice. When anything was broken in the gym, he would fix it himself. He would cook for everyone, join the football matches (he is an amazing footballer) and always made time to give advice. Super friendly and humble. Everyone in Thailand loves him, he is a national hero in Thailand

Even if you are a natural like Buakaw, aging won't stop and since he was betrayed so horribly, him losing real large amounts of money, not to mention the betrayal in at least seven fight, that would all got him to the top, making more money with the following fights, he had to realize, that he has to "slow" down, or he would have to stop a couple of years ago and still, he is able to compete with the best.

It's interesting that you bring up the concept of overtraining and mythological super-hard training setups. I saw an interview with GSP on Bispings podcast and one of the main things he said he would have done differently would be not to overtrain as much as he did during his younger days. For Bisping it was to be more flexible so maybe he wouldn't have taken as much significant damage.

One really really important detail you’ve not mentioned is that buakaw was in a terrible situation with the gym owner who is a total crook, leaving to him very publicly leaving the gym and was a huge story over Thailand. Buakaws good nature, which I also experienced, is so much more admirable because he was basically a k1 star and getting ripped off. May also have had something to do with him not training that hard. Also, when I was there buakaw wasn’t training 4hrs 2x a day but he was training hard. Crazy thing to me was after the 10k in the morning he’d go and do 400 knees on the bag straight away

Was the soda somewhat dark greenish? I got food poisoned down in Thailand and got that green drink from the hospital AND from the hotel I stayed at when they understood that I had been hospitalized for food poisoning. It’s their type of energy drink, I think. I have no idea what it was or what it was called.

Thais can be the nicest people in the world. During and after Covid and with their current political situation, the niceness isn’t always there but Thais are the nicest most loving people I’ve been around. Lost a wallet with a lot of cash and someone saved it for me. This was in Bangkok. I don’t think that act of kindness could happen in any other major city. I love the Thais. I originally dated a Thai girl and after we broke up, I realized I was actually always more in love with her country than I ever liked her. I live in Cambodia now and teach in an impoverished village. It’s just not the same. I miss the Thai language and food but I think I’m doing the right thing staying here. I was moving to Thailand but the covid shut the border down. I was going to return and instead of train in Pattaya with my usual coaches, I was going to make the journey to Chiangmai and find the Buakaw Village and live there on an education visa. Sadly though that never happened. Maybe someday I can meet Buakaw. He was the person who got me back into the gym when I was younger.

I still believe to this day that most thai fighters are simply a product of natural selection. They train hard, have questionable diet and nutrition by modern sports science standards and just grind and fight every other week. It's the fighters that have the combination of natural talent, genetics and willpower to just keep doing it and not breakdown.

    • @GabrielVargaOfficial
      @GabrielVargaOfficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Cool analysis. It's wild how with minimal strength training, diet, etc they still dominate muay thai.

@@GabrielVargaOfficial Literally every Muay Thai fighter in Thailand has the same story. Regardless if they're champs or not. They come from poverty and fighting was a way out of it or at least something productive to do. Their training regiment and lifestyle are all pretty similar. You put all these kids together and let them all fight each other and it naturally filters out the stronger ones.

Out bodies are alot more adaptable than we think. These guys have a mental strength advantage i believe. Growing up in poverty and practically fighting for food and fighting so
Often. And they train high rep padwork bagwork and tons of running. Their kicks are so powerful i remember watching sakmongol in k1 and i had never seen a better conditioned harder kicker up to that point

The only reason he would have gone down there was the knee before.
I know that sounds odd but my brother was telling me the other day I kneed him years ago.
He said it wasn't a crazy hard knee, maybe 60-70%, but his body got tingles and his legs shut down.
He was speculating another 20-30% of power might have shut the body down somehow.
Those where just his thoughts after dealing with a similar knee.

@@GabrielVargaOfficial i just feel that the way he fell and just as you say in your response video he wasnt "knocked out" plus theres another big reason i believe he took a dive because of the presence of the yakuza and how dominant buakaw was, they robbed him of one of the masato fights and probably threatened him and his career if he did not take a dive..dont get me wrong im a buakaw fan and hes one of the biggest reasons i fell in love with muay thai because when i started training muay thai myself was around the time of buakaws rise in k1-MAX i just know hos the yakuza made other top fighters throw fights, script fights etc..it happened in both PRIDE FC and K-1 sadly..
