This comparison perfectly illustrates the differences between the two products. Portability is the biggest difference between the two. If you demand the bigger screen real estate and portability is secondary, the Lenovo is a great choice. However if you want to travel light but not compromise power or features, the Surface Pro 2 is the best solution. Personally, the smaller screen of the Surface Pro 2 is perfectly acceptable. I can multitask, make presentations, type out long documents, and perform complex spreadsheets on the go. And isn't that what a small form factor is for? I will never carry a laptop/ultra book again.
When using the wacom pen from the surface pro 2, on the lenovo thinkpad yoga, does the eraser function work? Or would you still have to use that tool independently in whatever program you're using?
Can I expect a good Monday with the Blackberry Z30 review? I've been waiting so long for your amazing, best, unbiased and uncorporate review of such an awesome phone.
"This is the kind of thing you can swing and hurt somebody with...so don't do that!" I half watch your reviews for the products and the other half to document the darnest things you say! Lol. Great review. Ended up getting the surface pro 2.
I found this to be an excellent comparison. One correction, though: The Surface Pro 2's bottom connector is not used by the dock. When you dock the SP2, you actually press the dock's sides together, which uses the USB3, DisplayPort, and side Power ports. This leaves the bottom port open, so that you can use your keyboard while docked! It was an unexpected approach, but it works well. If there *is* a dock out there that uses the bottom port (there may be!) I just haven't seen it!
Thank you for your review! I am a returning older student and for most of this semester I had a ThinkPad tablet 2 as my first tablet was their first gen android version that I loved. I kept having issues with that tablet (finally found it was a couple Trojan viruses downloaded from corrupted files on my Microsoft account) and turned it back in for a refund. Loved it when it worked but was looking for something a bit bigger and robust. thought of the Helix but didn't like the heat issues with it. Then I came upon the ThinkPad Yoga and thought that this was my answer. Your review has reconfirmed my decision to buy the Yoga when I saw them side by side. The screen size between the two was an eye opener and since I have arthritic hands, (even the tablet 2 was a little heavy to hold while reading for an extended time) I usually rested it on a table or my lap to read anyway. I think the best part of your video was about the ability to swap pens between devices. The bigger pen would be much more manageable with my condition and I thank you for that little bit of knowledge that will make my life so much easier. Thank you again for your review/ comparison and all the other reviews that I have seen on your channel. Thank you
I think one of the best things about the thinkpad yoga is that you can take out the battery. It's not an on the fly type of swap, but if/when the battery gets to the point where it will no longer hold a charge you won't need buy a whole new device. You can just unscrew the back and swap that battery. That's what has held me back from getting a Surface Pro(2). I very much dislike the way companies are making devices have an intentional lifetime limitation.
Thank you for the thorough and informative comparison. I've been leaning toward the Surface Pro 2 because I travel for work to remote, fly-in communities. My goal for the New Year is to stop carrying both an iPad and a MacBook Pro. I want to bring onbly one device, preferably one that can run Windows 8.1, Office, OneNote and Photoshop. Unfortunately the Surface Pro 2 has been out of stock in Canada since late October, so it is nice to see a strong alternative contender in the ThinkPad Yoga.
Go with the Yoga. Its not much heavier than the Surface Pro 2 and the keyboard is much better than anything you will get with the Surface. In addition, the multiple positions of the Yoga are great while on an airplane and trying to fit it on the seat tray. Screen size matters too for business as does the 2 USB 3.0 ports. 12.5" is not that big and you trade a lot away with the Surface.
Trey Drier Well if your primary interest is Power with Portability, nothing beats the Surface Pro 2 in that. On the Yoga it is not very portable because the way the keyboard is always attached like it is makes it bulky for being very portable. Truthfully I think the Surface Pro 2 would be a lot more easier to handle in the tight area on a plane, but if you are using complex software such as Photoshop I have heard it is nice to have a bigger screen. The Surface Pro 2's keyboards wouldn't be a problem unless you have really big hands because a lot of people say they have no problem with it and the Surface Pro 2 also has USB 3.0
Hshton Aowell I think it's funny how far we've come. The laptop invention was for portability, right? But now, something as small as the Thinkpad Yoga can be considered NOT portable. In 20 years, something as big as the Surface Pro may be considered NOT portable. LOL! This is not a knock on your take. I'm just amazed at technology.
Hshton Aowell if you wouldn't like to carry a tablet and a laptop and you want a good keyboard and A BIGGER SCREEN AND EVEN LIGHTER THEN SURFACE PRO 2 you can buy sony vaio pro 11 but if you not want pen
Chaitanya Breed The Surface Pro 2 is as powerful as a laptop, so it is only one device to carry around that can pretty much do anything you need. The Sony Vaio Pro 11 looks like a decent product, but I would still say the Surface Pro 2 is better quality and has better portability. The Sony Vaio Pro 11 has a kind of cheap keyboard because it flexes very easily while typing. Its screen is only a tiny bit bigger and it is only 2 ounces lighter than the Surface Pro 2 which is really not much of a difference. The Surface Pro 2 has a full metal design which makes it very durable. The Surface Pro 2 has a kickstand which makes it a lot more stable especially when using the touchscreen, while the Sony Vaio Pro 11 uses a hinge making it not as stable. The Surface Pro 2 also has a brighter screen, and it is also very good on battery life. I've usually heard the Surface Pro 2 gets around 7 hours battery life, plus you can buy the power cover which is a keyboard that has a battery inside it, increasing the original battery life by 60%. So the Surface Pro 2 is a more quality product and better for portability, and it has the power and the battery life to not hold you back.
Hi Lisa! First of all, thank you for the very useful review. I think the SP2 lost out to the Yoga for a lot of people (myself included) because of the keyboard, but especially because of the larger screen real-estate on the yoga. However, with the new SP3 boasting a much larger screen and improved keyboard, I was wondering if you'll think you'll be doing another comparison smack down. It would be interesting to see how they stack up (and of course I'm totally torn between them)! Cheers, James
thinkpad fan since forever, (owned t23 and t43), own a surface pro though. Tough choice now though if i wanted a new one, I'd maybe choose the thinkpad,
So I need to get a new computer for grad school and I am having trouble deciding between 3: Surface Pro2, Thinkpad Yoga and Yoga Pro2. My concerns with SP2 is the screen size and the keyboard (as I will be doing lots of split screens and typing--though i will get the battery boosting keyboard for certain). With the T-pad Yoga I have heard A LLLOOTT about ghosting/image retention issues. Have experienced this at all? Lastly, the YP2 doesn't come with the digitizer and I want to be able to take notes on the screen. That said, which one would u suggest/recommend I get?? Have u seen image retention on any of these??
I’ve had my Surface Pro 2 for quite a few years now and the only complaint I have is the damn screen is so small.my Pro 2 has the 8 gig ram with 256 gig SS. Plus I’ve added a 128 gig Xd card in the slot. The full windows 8.1 OS is in it.
hi, are the touch keyboard and type keyboard on par (the ones of the surface pro2)? i mean you mentioned the gap between the two is smaller now but did they reach the same productivity level? when typing?
You must buy the active digitizer version if you want to use the Wacom pen. Check out our full review of the ThinkPad Yoga for info on the anti-glare and glossy display options: www.mobiletechreview.com/notebooks/Lenovo-ThinkPad-Yoga.htm
Thank you for this! What is the hinge quality like on the Thinkpad yoga? I am worried about give (wobbliness) of the screen when it is in normal laptop mode.
Decided on the Thinkpad Yoga after much consideration. Got the i7, 256GB, 8GB Ram for $1200. Really wanted the digitizer pen option but it was just too expensive and that was more just for fun than a necessity for me so I decided on the regular version. Thank you for the helpful comparison.
James Brumder At Newegg.com last week with one of their $100 instant saving plus a promotion code for another $100 off. I don't get charge tax or shipping. I think Costco also sell for the same price, but you will have to be a member and you will have to pay tax.
I got to actually demo a Pro at a local Staples and I was confused. Reason being I thought there was a sd slot located under the fold out stand? Or was this only regulated to the Surface 2 model and not the Pro 2? Still peeved M$ has chosen to only to put a data capable version in the Surface 2 and not the Pro 2 model
The micro SD slot on the Surface 2 is located under the fold out stand. The micro SD slot on the Pro 2 is located on the right side, above the pogo charger
Another feature of the Surf-ace Pro 2: self motion (13:30) :D Btw, very detailed and complete comparison! I love your reviews. Think I'll get the MS Surface Pro for my girlfriend, she'll love it just for the pink keyboard!
I've used both and prefer the Yoga for everyday use. The Surface is nice because it's so portable but I enjoy the Yoga's bigger screen for real work. Plus it is just so uncomfortable typing on your lap with the SP2. Much easier on the Yoga in laptop mode. I also love using presentation mode and watching videos while in bed.
The Dell Venue 11 Pro is available with your choice of Bay Trail or Intel Core CPUs. It's just starting to ship now. I'm sure more brands are in the pipeline.
hi lisa. really good review as usual. i'm looking to buy a tablet device to draw/paint on etc using painter9. which would you prefer out of the 2 devices on review. I was going to buy the surface pro2 but I now like the look of the lenova with the bigger screen. is it possible to use full software version of painter on the lenova. which would you opt for out of the 2. thanks for consideration. hawkeye
I have watched lots of reviews that say that it is really heavy, but 2 pounds should not be hard to hold. If it is hard for someone to hold 2 pounds, that's not good.
The Vaio Duo 13 is a sweet machine, but you have the smaller keyboard compared to the ThinkPad Yoga. The Duo 13 has a significantly wider color gamut but somewhat narrower viewing angles. And then there's N-Trig for the pen on the Duo vs. Wacom on these. For note taking they're equal, but for art, Wacom is the better choice.
Hey i really can't decide, which one of these devices I should buy? I want to use it for study, working (coding) , drawing, and play some games (not high end). It would really help me, if you tell me which one you would recommend?! :) Thx so far :)
one thing surface pro 2 often out of stock. don't know whether microsoft want quality over quantity or simply planning for the next surface. i hope the surface comes with nfc for example i am reading a news on a website on my phone and then simply nfc with the surface i can open the website continuing reading the news on the surface.
Definitely right about the Thinkpad line xD. I kinda hit my classmate's hand with it. Not a even scratch/dent on the thinkpad, his hand became swollen though xD.
Its a good thing you have those squirrel choking hands so you can hold both. ;) Another great review as usual. Shows exactly why MTR is the only place to find the best info.
@youfermont Don't be ridiculous. Any updates would be done over WiFi. Microsoft sends out updates once a week, and it is not an issue. You are just an Apple fanboi who feels "upset" because people are now saying that they are giving up their overpriced Apple products for Windows productivity and gasp!, innovation. Get over it. I have run Windows machines for over 20 years, and I have had only one virus, taken care of instantly by my antivirus. And that was 15 years ago.
This comparison perfectly illustrates the differences between the two products. Portability is the biggest difference between the two. The fact that the surface pro (a tablet) can go toe to toe with a machine like the ThinkPad speaks wonders about that device.
You make my favorite reviews, Lisa. Fantastic work!
When using the wacom pen from the surface pro 2, on the lenovo thinkpad yoga, does the eraser function work? Or would you still have to use that tool independently in whatever program you're using?

hi lisa, thx for the great review.
i have been told about the speaker problem of the surface. are there any issues with your surface pro 2?
hi, are the touch keyboard and type keyboard on par (the ones of the surface pro2)? i mean you mentioned the gap between the two is smaller now but did they reach the same productivity level? when typing?
hi Lisa, what are the specs for the Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga??
On the ThinkPad Yoga can you use the active digitizer on the non-digitizer model? Also how does the matte screen compare to the glossy screen?
You must buy the active digitizer version if you want to use the Wacom pen. Check out our full review of the ThinkPad Yoga for info on the anti-glare and glossy display options: www.mobiletechreview.com/notebooks/Lenovo-ThinkPad-Yoga.htm

great review as always! but it's a shame that the ram is not user-expandable. Now every manufacturer going that route?
Also just curious any word on the release date of that battery keyboard for the Surface M$ showed or was I mistaken in that it exists ?
Last I heard the Surface Pro battery keyboard would be out early 2014.
Do one between Surface Pro 2 and MacBook air
how about the inking speed, which one is faster ?
How do these devices compare to the Flip 11 and 13?

Its Alive 13:37 :)
Nice & informative video as always Lisa.
Which is a better display/device for photo work?
Can you do a flip 13 vs Lenovo Thinkpad yoga?
in your opinion is better a Acer R7 o a Lenovo thinkpad yoga?
Waiting for 2 gen of helix or thinkpad yoga..
Another feature of the Surf-ace Pro 2: self motion (13:30) :D
Btw, very detailed and complete comparison! I love your reviews. Think I'll get the MS Surface Pro for my girlfriend, she'll love it just for the pink keyboard!
Hey Lisa, can you do one for Asus Zenbook Infinity? dat one looks one fine piece of art
I've used both and prefer the Yoga for everyday use. The Surface is nice because it's so portable but I enjoy the Yoga's bigger screen for real work. Plus it is just so uncomfortable typing on your lap with the SP2. Much easier on the Yoga in laptop mode. I also love using presentation mode and watching videos while in bed.
can you review the Vaio Tap 11?
Surface Pro screen and color looks so nice when compared to the thinkpad yoga
thanks. I will get the Thinkpad Yoga as I have to type on a real keyboard.
Are there many 11 inch baytrail tablets, out there? Or are there products coming out that are 10+inch display for baytrail.,
The Dell Venue 11 Pro is available with your choice of Bay Trail or Intel Core CPUs. It's just starting to ship now. I'm sure more brands are in the pipeline.
Lisa's review is awesome hahah "this is the kind of thing you swing and hurt somebody with"
can you review the xperia zr please?
thank you for reviewing them!!! :D
Thank you, Lisa. Thinkpad Yoga seems like the clear winner. Unfortunately I haven't seen it available near me.

Both look like awesome tablets but I may consider the lg g pad 8.3 as my first tablet.
Lisa try the samsung ativ book 9 plus i7 256GB SSD 8RAM
do you feel that the surface 2 pro i just too heavy to hold in one hand or two?
I have watched lots of reviews that say that it is really heavy, but 2 pounds should not be hard to hold. If it is hard for someone to hold 2 pounds, that's not good.

Very useful. Thank you.
Thanks Lisa,
Lenovo for me, Lisa, you're the BEST!
I'll stick with my laptop.
Surface Pro 2, best PC I've ever owned!
Thank u lisa
That would be nice if only Lenovo could sell ThinkPad Yoga in Taiwan.
The Lenovo looks better to me. Has a proper keyboard, better docking, better specs, more options when buying and possibly cheaper.
***** You are probably seeing TH-cam comments Daver. Google + and TH-cam are combined now. Look in either the Google + or TH-cam settings.
Its a good thing you have those squirrel choking hands so you can hold both. ;)
Another great review as usual. Shows exactly why MTR is the only place to find the best info.
Wooow what a review :O - Nicely done (Y) - I wanna get the pro 3 version now - LOL :D
Microsoft's keyboard... "Better than nothing..." That says it all.
Vaio's are sweet
The lenovo is kind of wonky and having to place it keyboard down is mega stupid
In just don't understand how you people can live with 32, 64, 128 gig of storage.
the thinkpad has the red eye!
No
automagically...
Amazing review I got the surface pro 2 for my mom! :D and the yoga for my girl! #winning!

Not much to learn from these review. Nothing technical or edgy, nothing new
