MSR Elixir 1 First Impressions | Camping In RAIN!

  • Another camping trip which involved HEAVY rain. I took the opportunity to share my first thoughts on the Elixir 1!
    So me and Monty plus a few others visited Loch Drunkie for an overnight camp. Now this is not the usual place you would find me at, but I'm always up for a group camp! A calm night with light wind then a morning with heavier rainfall did give me another chance to camp with the MSR Elixir 1 in heavy rain. Once again it performed very well!

    Great video. It was good to hear info about the tent. Loved the sound of the rain and the views. Do you think that would be a good year round tent in Scotland? How would it be in the colder months? Take care!

    • @GazTheExplorer
      @GazTheExplorer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You'll generally find all tents will be fine in colder months. It's the sleeping setup which is the most important part of keeping warm. The Elixir 1 is more a three season tent so I would not be taking it up Munro's in the middle of winter when snow and high winds are expected. Lower level camps like this camp is where this tent does well. I will eventually take the Elixir up a hill this winter and see how it copes in moderate gales around 40MPH. Thanks. ATB Gaz.

    Great tent Gaz... I had it performing really well in 30mph gusts up Ben Donich, however I don't know if the top pole will rub through the fly sheet over time. Can't fault it other than that. Great review 👏

    • @GazTheExplorer
      @GazTheExplorer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Stephen. I don’t think I would trust it on summit camps up corbetts or Munro’s if the wind was forecast. I definitely think the poles would be a problem. I’m still hoping to take it somewhere up the Pentlands this winter to see how it performs.

    • @GazTheExplorer
      @GazTheExplorer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Elixir one is a great tent for someone going out solo. It’s definitely on the more spacious side for a one man tent. It’s far better than a Helm 1 for example👍 I’m tempted to get the Access 1 from MSR which is more for the winter. ATB Gaz.

    Hi. Thanks for the review :) I'm considering this tent for a year backpacking in South America, where I'll be doing some multi-day hikes/treks in Patagonia and in the Andes. Do you think it would be up to the task?
    Also - what is it like stargazing at night-time with the rainfly off? Is it awesome, or is the view obstructed because of the lack of mesh? Thanks :)

    • @GazTheExplorer
      @GazTheExplorer  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think this tent should do a good job for your adventures. Having the flysheet off on a clear night is a good idea and one of the advantages of owning a tent that is inner first. Enjoy.

  • @ChrisWilson-mg1it
    @ChrisWilson-mg1it 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I like a tent that the fly sheet and inner go up at the same time

    • @GazTheExplorer

  • @bcamping1

    You dont need separate peg for the fly. Just connect it strait to the pole and tighten it drum tight. Then you dont get water pooling on the roof.
    Ps. It is not a negative comment. Just that nobody else said it and there is 14K views. And no link for second review in the description.

    so my purchace of MSR exaliar 3 was good decision by looks of it but it's just 3 season tent because in snow it may collapse but it is a good doable tent

    • @GazTheExplorer
      @GazTheExplorer  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the MSR Elixir would be fine dealing with snow load but of course a 4 season tent will do a better job with spindrift and snow load. Good luck with your new tent, I like mines of course.

  • @leifandersson8754

    The main problem I have with the Elixir are the poles. Since the long poles are connected to each other it is more problematic when you pack them away.

    • @GazTheExplorer
      @GazTheExplorer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve seen some harsh weather in Wales lately to be fair👍 I personally would not be taking the Elixir up Munro’s but I definitely believe it’s great for my lower level group camps. I definitely think the Elixir would struggle in high winds on exposed hills. I was more looking at this tent for its space on 2 day camps on lower ground.
