    Building out a cine rig for your mirrorless camera can be both a beneficial and very enjoyable process. I've been using the Lumix S1 as my Handheld camera for over a year now, and in that time i've slowly been improving the ergonomics and features of my handheld so it better suits my workflow.
    The Lumix S1 is an incredibly capable camera that you can now get for less than £1000 on the used market, and with the upgrade key you're able to shoot 6K RAW video externally as well as internal 6K Open Gate video, which is nuts!
    This body also has really impressive IBIS, so rigging it up makes the whole handheld experience very enjoyable.
    It doesn't matter what mirrorless camera you own, you can make an excellent cine rig as long as you prioritise ergonomics and usability above everything else.
    This rig has taken me around a year to complete and to perfect, so please don't expect to run out and buy this all at once; building your rig is an evolutionary thing and you'll learn what you like and don't like as time moves forward with it.
    Thanks for watching!

    Pro tip: if you use a D-Tap to USB/PD puck, you can do V-Mount changes without powering down the S1, by leaving the OEM battery in the camera! I’ve found this massively useful

    • @framewavemedia4831
      @framewavemedia4831 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      THIS! - You also avoid the risk of corrupting your files when your V-mount dies before swapping it out. The only trade off is USB-C is a trash connection port and it can be trickier to get a cable that is the right size but also doesnt protrude too far. I'd go with the Kondor Blue right angle USBC so you can get it more flush to the body and your hand isnt bumping it.
      I use Vmount plates that can do USBC....what DTap to USB cable are you using?

    I bought a used S1 as a b-camera to my rigged-up S5, but I'm continually find myself reaching for it over the S5. Don't know what it is. Just such a great camera ergonomically and the bigger tilt screen is better. Hadn't really thought about getting a cage for it and rigging it up. It's even more complicated by the S5 mark II & IIx releases (one of which I'll need in my life)...so which camera to sell to make room for a mark II? This video is great food for thought.

    Hi Josh , very nice content as always !!!
    I have the S1 and the black magic 12g 5" , and I have a problem with playback in the camera when connected to an external monitor "the screen is black" I can only put play in the monitor with the little jog wheel. Did u found a work around ? That would be a blessing !

    Thank you, Josh. The wireless focus pull looks really interesting (although I still get sad knowing that we kind of NEED focus pull for our Panasonic cameras). Were you using a DTap splitter to power both the camera and the Ninja V? (I must have missed that if you mentioned that.)

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So the V-Mount battery itself has two d-tap ports, so I can power both the camera and the ninja V without any splitters!

    I like this Rig 👍 very well build. Do you never use a side handle?

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks mate! I rarely use a side handle with this setup as it adds extra bulk and unnecessary weight, but I use side handles all the time with the BS1H because they’re a necessity!

  • @BrendonKPadjasek
    @BrendonKPadjasek ปีที่แล้ว

    1. Thank you for doing a S1 video since there is (I feel like) a total of 4 out there lol
    2. Thanks for sharing the wireless follow focus system. I'm looking to build a similar rig and I also need a wireless system for when I use my RS2 gimbal (as sometimes the built in wheel isn't in the best place.
    How do you choose when to use the S5 vs S1?

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey thanks for watching! So I normally use the S1 for handheld stuff as it stays rigged up like this all the time, and then my S5 stays stripped back so it’s ready for gimbal work and also for photography. This way I can jump between everything really easily :)

    • @BrendonKPadjasek

  • @dfuhrman
    @dfuhrman ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for sharing. I’ve setup my S5 with a rig like you posted a while back and have really been enjoying it. I’ve thought about doing this with my S1, but can’t work out how to easily and quickly change settings if I need to access the menu, since the screen is blocked by the battery. Do you use the Lumix app with your phone, or just slide the battery back and forth on the rails?

    • @JonackFilm
      @JonackFilm ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe use longer rails?

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s awesome , would love to see your S5 rig! So normally I leave a little bit of space between the battery and the LCD screen so I can peer and see all the settings if I need to, but the nice thing with the S1 is that top LCD display that shows your ISO, Aperture and Shutter settings too. Normally the camera is always set to V-Log and I rarely mess with anything else, so that too LCD is perfect:)

    I have a S1, I’m going to keep using my Pocket 4k for film. I think the S1 and all those Panasonic cameras are too sharp.
    Looks amazing but they just don’t feel the same when I look at everyone’s short films. The Pocket 4k and 6k are much more organic looking.

    • @TrollMeister_
      @TrollMeister_ 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The “too sharp” comes from the lack of an anti aliasing filter.
