    So how long does it take to get a 10 gal batch from mash temps up to boiling? I remember my brewing days, using a regular ol' turkey fryer burner. Easy 20-30 min to get 6.5 gal up to boiling at WFO, more if it was winter (in Wisconsin).

    • @TheBollyers
      @TheBollyers  ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt, I do 15 gallon batches, running off 18 gallons of wort to the kettle. I have a three burner system, so this burner is dedicated to the boil kettle. I haven’t timed it, but I start heating while I’m still running off to the kettle. So by the time the sparge is done, I’m only about 5 minutes away from the start of the boil.

    I have the 100k 10 jet and 200k 20 jet from Tejas Smokers in a wok burner station setup and they sound very similar and I'll tell you right now they will make a wok bottom glow red in seconds.

      You should watch my other video, “The Meltdown”! Yeah, you have to be careful with this beast. You should never crank this up under a pot unless you have a whole lot of thermal mass inside it. You could probably use this thing to make horseshoes!

    Just curious as I am interested... How does putting a large boiler to cook crabs, lobsters and the like go with these types of burners, or if your sliding a wok round and round, up and down? There seems to be no real mounting/resting point for the pot. Are these burners strong enough to take a reasonable load direct on top? Is there something more to add, or that I am missing?

    • @TheBollyers
      @TheBollyers  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Peter, the burner is just the heat source. You'll also need a grate to set a pot on it a ring to set a wok on. And FYI, this particular type of burner needs 10-12" clearance between the burner and the pot to work properly. Watch my videos "The Meltdown" and "The Beast" and you'll understand better how it works, and also how easily you can mess up with this much heat.

    • @CalaisRider

    If I wanted to use a wok with this type of burner, what is the most common way to make a stand for the wok to rest? Great video. Thanks!

    • @TheBollyers
      @TheBollyers  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aiden, I'm not sure I'm qualified to answer what the most common way would be. I already had the stand, and replaced the "banjo burner" type burner with this one. I subsequently partially melted down my aluminum stand with too much heat! (See my other videos) Find a welder buddy like mine or get a quote from a welding shop. You can get by with a simple design to support the burner and a pot over it. Keep in mind that, unlike other types of burners, you'll need 10-12 inches of clearance from the burner to the pot. I also recommend a windscreen of some sort, but it's not necessary. Also, you'll want to look at the gas pressure and volume requirements, which are also quite different from other burners. Good luck!

    It’s been several years since you tested this burner would you still recommend it? Is it still working? If not how long did it last?

    • @TheBollyers
      @TheBollyers  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I’ve had this burner for a couple of years now, and it still works like a champ. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a high output burner. It works much better than traditional burners that have an air shutter, because the fuel-air mixture is done very efficiently right at the jets. It’s very sturdy and reliable. I plan to use it for years to come.

    • @MikeTrieu
      @MikeTrieu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheBollyers Is it really burning efficiently, though? When you opened it up full, it started producing some yellow flame, which means that its a bit oxygen lean. And there's no way to control that air intake extremely? That's the best you can hope for?

    • @TheBollyers
      @TheBollyers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@MikeTrieu the air mix happens directly at the jets themselves. No, it’s not 100% efficient. But it hits that sweet spot between simplicity, economy and raw power. People cooked over wood fires for thousands of years, and nobody complained about lack of efficiency or some yellow flame. If you want efficiency get an oxyacetylene torch. If you want a rocket engine that’ll boil 20 gallons of liquid very quickly, and for bottom dollar, I recommend one of these. But everybody has different needs and desires. To each his own. Cheers!

      I got the rest of the parts from a hardware store (pipe, elbow, brass fitting, etc). And I already had the 0-60 psi regulator.
      Later, as seen in my other videos, I got help from a welder buddy to get it mounted in my burner stand. But there are sites that have this same burner, mounted in a stand and ready to go. You might check out this site tejassmokers.com/Crab-Hi-Heat-Cookers/27

    Please excuse the rookie comment, but what could a beast like this possibly be used for? I owned a product called the Companion MegaJet outdoor Power Cooker which put out 85,300 BTU, and the thing scorched the seasoning off my cast iron pan, and horrifically warped a stainless steel roasting tray. Are you using this to boil giant amounts of water? for blacksmithing work? To show off to friends? Im really interested

    Please help. I just purchased one of these and I don’t have a clue how to safely connect it to a propane tank. I noticed that there isn’t a venturi.
    All I have is the burner. How do I connect black pipe to the propane line?

    • @TheBollyers
      @TheBollyers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Go to your local propane supplier. They usually have a storefront with heaters, burners, etc. you should be able to find at least the brass fittings. I believe you’ll need a 3/8 male flare to 3/8 male NPT (national pipe taper). Then you’ll need about a 6” piece of 3/4” threaded black pipe and a 3/4” elbow. Lastly, you’ll need a reducer, 3/4” male NPT to 3/8” female NPT. Don’t forget the pipe dope for all of the NPT threads, but the male flare fitting doesn’t need the pipe dope. It’ll connect directly to your propane hose. And you’ll need a pipe wrench for the black pipe.(Any plumbers on here feel free to correct me if any of this is wrong.)
      That’ll set you up just like mine. Your setup might need to be slightly different according to the stand you’re putting it in. Best of luck, hope this helps!

    • @TheBollyers
      @TheBollyers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Also, there isn’t a venturi. The air mix happens right at the jets. It’s a different animal, but it’s really cool.

      @TheBollyers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wish I knew what to tell you. Mine gives off some yellow flame at first, but then settles down to mostly blue after it gets going. One thing I can say it that these burners are designed for high volume gas flow. You might read up on it and see if there’s a way you can tweak your setup in that regard. Maybe a different regulator or larger hose. Let me know if and how you get it resolved. Best of luck!

    Would this heat 300 gallons of water to a boil?

    • @TheBollyers
      @TheBollyers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow! 300?! I really don’t know. I think it probably would eventually bring it to a boil. But considering that I can probably boil 18 gallons starting at 70°F in about 30-45 minutes, it might take you 8-12 hours for 300 gallons. Yikes!
      Now I’m only estimating, and I have no idea what kind of efficiency of heat transfer you can achieve.
      There’s also a 440,000 btu model out there that has 44 jets. I would at least get that one if you’re going to try it.
      Good luck, and let me know if you do it and what kind of success it produces!

But i only use it outside, and whatever propane that leaks out gets burned along with the rest. Otherwise it’s such a minute amount that it doesn’t pose any safety issue, so I’m not bothered by it.
