  • ASIA'S RARE FOOD | Sherpa food in KATHMANDU, NEPAL | Nepali + Tibetan food tour in Kathmandu
We're in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal to explore the food culture of this vibrant city and region. We head to Boudha, a part of the Kathmandu Valley which has a high concentration of Sherpa and Tibetan communities. The food in this region of Kathmandu is utterly unique and completely different to the Newar and Nepali food we have share in previous episodes. We eat at local Sherpa restaurants and sample rildok (potato dumplings) and rikikur (potato pancakes) as well as phalghi a Sherpa stew. We then explore some Tibetan food including gyuma- Tibetan blood sausage at a quirky restaurant and buffalo thukpa- a hearty noodle soup. We hope you enjoy this food tour of Kathmandu! #nepalistreetfood #nepal #nepalifood
What we ate and where we ate it:
    1. Rildok (potato dumplings) and Rikikur (potato pancakes) at Himalayan Sherpa Food House, the first restaurant on the left down the alley next to Namaste Beads Handicrafts, बौद्ध सडक, 44602, Nepal. Open daily.
    2. Phalghi (Sherpa stew) at restaurant to the left of Himalayan Sherpa Food House as you exit the front door. Open daily.
    3. Gyuma at Dege Restaurant next to Manakamana Mini Market, Unnamed Road, Kathmandu 44600, Nepal. Open daily 9:00am to 9:30pm.
    4. Buffalo thukpa at Khawa Karpo Tasty Noodle Factory, 44600, Kathmandu, Nepal. Open daily 6:00am to 9:00pm.

Just curious, do you use local currency for the payment of foods?? Or is it USD? Card? . Whats the best payment/currency in Nepal for these types of local eats. Hoping you may help me and other people to "eat like a traveller not a tourist".

Sorry I missed this Brilliant But Blue. Local currency for pretty much everything so Nepali rupee. But you can use your credit card at most restaurants in the tourist area of Thamel. Hope that helps! Cheers, Sheena

I’m Nepali but live in the US and I’m at home rn eating toast and leftover spaghetti ☹️ lol, wanting the foods you’re eating...
I saw your previous video of Newari and general Nepali street foods and am now here on this video.
I haven’t been back home in almost 15 years so thank you for this video. You’re both so respectful of our culture and people. Your lovely smiles and appreciation of the food and those who are preparing it is heartwarming to watch. ❤️ thank you

Also idk if you guys take requests into consideration but a video of veg nepali food would be so interesting! Nepal has a lot of veg people so their veg food is super flavorful and tasty!

Hi S, thanks so much for watching and for your generous words. We had a blast filming in Nepal- we met some amazing people and ate so well. And we learnt so much- we feel like we barely scratched the surface- the food culture is so diverse! As to your request- we’d love to explore more of the veg scene but it’ll have to wait until our next trip as we’ve now left 😭 Hope we can return soon. Are there many Nepali restaurants where you live? You must miss the food so much. Hope these videos brought home a little closer to you! Cheers, Sheena

Another great tour of truly hidden food gems! Everything looked so hearty and delicious, especially the pounded potato dumplings and pancake, Do they cook the potato before pounding? And is it like regular potatoes, or more like a yam or sweet potato? Good thing it's 2:30 in the morning here' or I'd have to get in my car to hunt down some food...my tummy is rumbling!

Hi MsKestrela! Thanks for watching and commenting. Ah yes something I forgot to mention in my excitement- yep they boil the potatoes before pounding. Again you have outdone yourselves! The mortar and pestle was so interesting. Just like we have in Japan. I had a big wooden mortar and pestle just like that years ago that we used to pound rice into mochi. Nepal also has buckwheat noodles like Japan. Of course, it would taste different, I am sure. And, of course, the potato pancake could be similar to Norwegian lefsa, made with potatoes and flour. Also eaten with butter! I think the Sherpa version looks more delicious! My son did the Nepal 23 day trek 5 years ago.
The noodle making machine looks just like a Japanese udon noodle making machine. The noodles look very similar to Japanese udon. I can’t believe how similar so many things are between Nepal and Japan. How cool is that! Of course the flavor profile is different.....
Can you give some more details where the Himalayan Sherpa Food house is? Or even that whole area.... I tried looking on Google Maps for it but I can’t find it.

Hi P T, the alleyway isn’t marked on Google maps but Tosh’s description is spot on 😄 Did your son enjoy his trek? I found the experience so meditative 🤗 We love the crossover and similarities between dishes of different cultures- it’s so fascinating to uncover and explore. Those potato dishes really blew us away- it was like eating potato for the first time and marvelling over the purity in flavour. I’d travel back to Nepal just to eat those two dishes again 😍 So happy you enjoyed this video, thanks for watching and commenting 😄 Cheers, Sheena

Yes. The gyuma experience is indeed memorable in all aspects.
Whenever you mention you're in a new location I either 1) think of dishes I've had during my visits or 2) do my standard preliminary research on foods to eat and places to try. And because we do the same kind of research 👍 we end up reading the same articles. You teased the potatoes in your intros but I obviously did not know for certain if you made it to Boudha so that was wonderful. But yes, my favorite is the gyuma lady. I'm happy a few articles mention her but was very stoked you two actually filmed there. Kudos.
