Buck with Blue Tongue 2020 rut NJ

  • Disturbing footage of a buck trying to eat and suffering through BlueTongue. "Blue Tongue" is a vernacular word for Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD). This is a disease transmitted by a biting midge that lives in small streams and, especially, stagnant water. It is NOT CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease). EHD is endemic in places like SC, NC, and parts of TN and is moving north as the planet warms due to humans' disregard for the environment. Some deer do recover from it and this can be seen the next year in their hoofs, which are pointed and deformed. A deer that recovers now has antibodies, thus explaining how the disease can be endemic in some regions. Yet when it first arrives in populations without antibodies it takes a very high death toll, often impacting deer populations for years. In the Fall of 2021 various regions of New Jersey were hit hard. This was filmed by trail camera in southern Hunterdon County in 2020, indicating the disease's presence the year before. Since the images were taken on trail camera, the poster was not present when the buck passed by and thus had no opportunity to put him out of his misery. We can't be totally sure of what happened in the end to him, but given his condition it is highly doubtful that he recovered. There is no indication that EHD can be transmitted to humans, and eating the meat does not transmit it. However, given the condition of this deer I would not recommend eating its meat, as is the case for any sick animal.

    You know I have had this external debate for a while. Here in Indiana we get only 1 buck tag and regardless of the size of the rack I figured that if I see a deer that is suffering I will tag it and tell the story because that’s what we are here to do. protect nature, and feed yourselves out of gods grocery store.

      I agree. With the taking of a suffering. But I feel department of fish and wildlife here in Kentucky should also issue a injured or suffering tag and as long as you can prove it but anyway that the deer was suffering or injured far is blue tongue which is very obvious and underlying health conditions is obvious then you should be able to harvest the deer regardless a tag or like I said issue a tag for that it would only be $10 more or 15 or whatever but I’m sure people will buy and it would bring in more revenue

    After all these years there is still no effective treatment for this, but then again we're talking a about wild animals which would pose a major challenge trying to treat something like this. It's not like you can walk into the woods and look for deer that might be affected by this.
    Some deer survive this after a couple of weeks if they can hang on without starving, and you can clearly see by this poor guys ribs that he isn't eating.

    • @bch5513
      @bch5513 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Pretty close. It is a biting midge that breeds in those small holes and bites the animals when they come to drink. They die from the vasculitis that is caused that makes there blood vessels just leak everywhere into their tissues and may just leak fluid and blood out of their orifices. It is technically a “hemorrhagic fever”.They can’t regulate their blood pressure or fluids and seek water. It is a very nasty nasty way to go.

Judging from his rack hes a lil older deer. Id say at least 3 to 4 years old. So obviously its not something hes had since birth. I can't imagine he'd live to long like that.
