I had a Parkzone T-28 in 2009. It had a 44" wingspan. The Parkzone brand was part of Eflite in those days. My T-28 came with an Eflite speed control, motor and servos. I flew it on 4S lipo for years with the stock motor and speed control.
my first duty station was VT-3, The Red Knights, at Whiting Field, Florida. We flew Trojans. They were basically an engine with a pilot strapped on....10 foot prop, and huge radial engine - 12 cylinders as I remember......it was the first truly aerobatic air frame that students flew. They spent a lot of time in formation flying....about half the students were Vietnamese...
I had my original issue one at the field last weekend, all I kept getting was "How did I get one already?" I upgraded it it, with an oleo front strut, and a really nice light set. Navs, beacons, and strobes. I am a bit shocked they didn't add nice oleo gear to the model. Its all it REALLY needed. The rumor mill thinks it did get a gear upgrade on the re-issue. Heard it several times. I actually got a ride in a real one couple years back, owned by a friend. Love the T-28. I can fly the original version 8 minutes on a 2200mah 3 cell. Well engineered model. Now I understand why it was discontinued for a bit. I always recommend this model for the transition to a complex airframe (FLAPS, GEAR, LOW WING) for new RC Pilots. Oh, and and old crusty guy (KNOWS EVERYTHING) at my field says the T-28 wasn't a war bird...North American fully equipped the T-28 with hardpoints, and it has been used all over the world as just that. South Vietnam lost many in combat against the North. I know a rotary wing Pilot who flew for the South, he told me they were always assigned to attack the Norths armor, many being shot down in the process.
Horizon has definitely come a ways with their models. I agree with you on limiting elevator throw. I had the original and with full elevator, it was easy to overflare for landing. Probably going to get a 4s 3200 sometime. But for now I’m just going to fly it on my 2200s. Satisfactory videos as always Chris.👍

I put in a $30 Hobbywing Skywalker ESC and put it on 4S and it flies amazing now. Should be similar in performance to the 2.0, minus the smart features. To be honest, the plane runs extremely cool, I could have likely run it on 4S on the old ESC. I've tried different prop configurations, it seems to fly best with the stock one. Also of the best flight times on 4S with any of my 120mm Warbirds. The only weakness I've noticed is the plastic servos on the rudder, they strip easy, will likely replace with a metal one.

I ended up buying the Trojan and had a few flights on it now. could you remember what flight times you were getting on the 3200 4s spektrum? granted I'm using a 50c and yours is a 30c but it should be similar to me at 5 mins throttle time mostly using the upper end of the power most the time. I watched a review on this by someone else and they said they got 13 mins or so. 5 mins sounds right in comparison to my other 1.2m warbirds. also does your battery meter on the TX dip quite a bit after take off then goes back up? the planes full throttle speed seems to drop after some hard fly bys too. Its my first time I used smart lipos and thought the battery meter would've been a bit more like a fuel gauge slowing dropping. cheers, Mark 🇬🇧
I get 5+ minutes flying the model hard. If you fly it around pretty slow, I could see getting 13minutes actually. It’s pretty efficient and will fly quite slow with the flaps down. On the voltage readout, it’s simply taking a reading from the packs. The individual cell voltages will vary depending on the throttle. Higher throttle means higher current which means more voltage drop. I’m guessing that’s what you’re seeing.
You always do great displaying your planes! How would this compare power-wise to the 1.2m Mustang or P-47? Finally, what is the difference between the normal Avain ESCs and the Avian Lite ESCs? Thanks!
Thanks! I haven’t flown the p51, but I’d say the power on 4s is similar to the p47 on 4s. On the esc, I think the primary difference is that the lite version doesn’t have the heat sinked case which makes it lighter. I think most all of the functionality is basically the same otherwise.
Do you have any upgrade replacement suggestions for the nose gear? I finally broke the front gear strut ,from bending it to straighten so many times. I see lots of them on line but not sure if they will fit
Great video as always Chris. Just a quick question. In the begining of video you show the smart esc screen with individual cell count display. I just read a post about the avian light not having that ability. I belive this kit comes with the avian light 70A.
Your opinion would be appreciated: I am about to get started with rc fixed wing. I do fly IRL, so I already know HOW it all works with a real stick/rudder/throttle (and retracts, flaps, mixture, constant speed prop, lol). But, I have no experience devoping "the touch" (not to mention the brain/eye/hands orientation) for flying in 3rd Person perspective. My gut tells me I really should start with the Aeroscout RTF. My question is: would you consider this T-28 to still be a bit too hot, even in full dirty configuration, to learn rc flying?
Well, I do think the t28 could be used as a trainer. However, the aeroscout will be overall more forgiving to learn on. I do recommend getting connected with a local club and seeking out some instruction. It will help you in the long run and they may actually have a trainer that you can learn on to start out with.
Does this trojan feel more stable than the 1.1m? I'm flying the 1.1 but it feels "floaty" and gets pushed around in the wind easily. I'm using a 4s 2200.
The reverse thrust is a functionality in the smart esc which this latest release comes with. It’s a setting within the esc itself. I setup reverse thrust on the Draco and show that in the vid. The process would be the same here.
I assume you’re talking about the fms 1400? I don’t have much experience with the 1400 one, but it’s a safe assumption that the eflite is a much quicker assembly. I had an older fms t28 a number of years ago with wire gear and liked it quite a bit. This was before it came with the shock absorbing gear.
Expo is there to help tune the desired feel around center mostly. I’m not big on it personally while others I know like it quite a bit. It’s all about personal preference. I generally default to no expo and will add in some if I feel if I find the maximum rates feel good but still a little too sensitive around center to my liking. If the 30% feels good to you, then that’s all that matters. However, if you find it tends to respond non-linearly, maybe try a little less.
That’s hard to say really. The model doesn’t take much, but I get the model into my desired approach attitude and work the throttle as needed to the ground.
I owned the previous version and it was a great plane . I was naughty and I would use a 4 cell 2200 in it , and boy !, did it wake up. The only issue with this plane is there is nothing really new . Yes theafdef “safe” but you don’t really need it for this plane and telemetry, again you don’t really need it . I would have preferred lights , upgraded landing gear with compression and a more aggressive scheme …. That’s my 2cents
Good video, makes it all understandable, I am about purchasing the FMS 1400mm Trojan this week but still two questions, maybe someone can help me out. 1st this one is less important but, does anyone know where to get the second pilot for this plane and how to get it in the cockpit? Second, more serious, my home field has grass, not a putting green but its flat and well kept short. The nose wheel always seems to be an issue, is in this V4 version the nosewheel trustworthy ? Thanks in afvance
We’ve come so far with these BNF and PNP airplanes that a human being appears to no longer be required for the assembly. Ha-ha! Great video, Chris, and awesome editing. 👍😎
@@Thercgeek I found it on eBay for $14. It's called an aileron goniometer or aileron angle meter. Only difference is that it's in black color it looks like.
Have the yellow 1.1m T28, not really sure it’s going to be much of a difference between that and this model, besides the flaps and retracts. A bit on the expensive side too, 320 for the BNF. Not sure it’s worth the upgrade.
Great video Chris. Always like your videos and they helped me get back into the new era of electric "RC" flying. EDIT: Chris does this fly anything like the RealFlight sim model, for instance a little heavy? Plus, I like your "stop motion" effect in this video, reminds me of my old Gumby days with the Blockheads. 😁
Thank you! I’m not actually sure how it compares to the sim as I haven’t flown this one in it. I don’t find that the model flies heavy to me personally.
@@Thercgeek Very good. I'm currently flying an eF Commander 1.4m and it's a joy to fly got me back in to RC flying, but this T-28 looks fantastic and fairly scale.
@@Thercgeek A question about elevator travel. Did you mechanically setup the elevator horns by the book, or did you move them closer inside for a little more aggression?
Sorry to say, I love eflite but not the one’s with nose gear...field with grass and you can change the nose gear every 2 months...had the p39 and cost me more on nose gear then the plane itself
The only issue now is props I made folding prop on my v900 as every landing was broken prop at 8quid pop I got frustrated after 10th one and it worked but this will be challenging
I do think this is a great option for learning on. I highly recommend getting plugged in with a club and seeking out some flight instruction for best success as a part of that though.
Well, I don’t have any experience with the previous one so can’t say related to the retracts. I didn’t see any issue there, but I only ever fly from asphalt. That said, if someone lands nose wheel first (I.e. doesn’t flare at landing), I could see it getting into trouble and hammering the nose. It lands and flares super nice though, so it should be able to be avoided.
why can't they just use anything else rather than styrofoam to make this ok looking airplanes? it just feels like you getting robbed of your money for what you receive, it's just such cheap material and it feels cheap when you hold it in your hands, printed super light weight plastic or carbon is the way to go, not this.

I generally default to no expo and will add in some if I feel if I find the maximum rates feel good but still a little too sensitive around center to my liking. If the 30% feels good to you, then that’s all that matters. However, if you find it tends to respond non-linearly, maybe try a little less.
@@Thercgeek Thanks for the tip!
Excellent review style.
Thank you kindly!
what percentage of gas do you recommend for landing? Thanks!!!
That’s hard to say really. The model doesn’t take much, but I get the model into my desired approach attitude and work the throttle as needed to the ground.
nice plane
get mine tomorow
Nice!!
I definitely get that.
I have MUCH softer tires on my first gen
kinda sad that for 300+ bucks it doesn't even have gear doors... except that great model! amazing video as always
Where did you get the tool you use to set all your control surfaces
It’s something that I offer www.thercgeek.com/product/Control-Surface-Deflection-Meter
What tool are you using to measure your flap travel?
It’s a discontinued product from tower hobbies. I’m working on my own version, so stay tuned. Should have it ready by the end of the month.
Thank you! To do any work in the cockpit, you’ll need to pull the canopy off. It’s glued on, but can usually get peeled up with a little work.
Oh, and I’m uncertain about the gear and grass. I don’t have much experience with the fms 1400mm t-28.
@@Thercgeek never mind, I just ordered the T28. Will tell later my experience with it.
Sounds good! 😊
We’ve come so far with these BNF and PNP airplanes that a human being appears to no longer be required for the assembly. Ha-ha! Great video, Chris, and awesome editing. 👍😎
Thanks! 🤣😁
I wish I could get landing gear parts
What's the tool that you are using to measure travel?
That’s a discontinued great planes product. That said, I will have my own 3d printed version available in another week or two. 😊
@@Thercgeek I found it on eBay for $14. It's called an aileron goniometer or aileron angle meter. Only difference is that it's in black color it looks like.
Neat stop motion video..
Thanks!
So cool
Have the yellow 1.1m T28, not really sure it’s going to be much of a difference between that and this model, besides the flaps and retracts. A bit on the expensive side too, 320 for the BNF. Not sure it’s worth the upgrade.
I hear you. Just depends on what you’re looking for. I like having the flaps and retracts personally and so generally gravitate that direction.
@@Thercgeek thanks, btw do they carry that throw meter you have anywhere? Can’t find it
It’s been long discontinued. I’m working on my own version that I’m hoping to have available by the end of the month. Things have been crazy.
@@Thercgeek Same question as Jonathan - throw meter - looking forward to it 😊
Man that is sweet!
How long is the flight time on the 2200 or the 3200?
I get well over 5 minutes with the 3200.
The T28 is a really good flying model. 😊
@@Thercgeek A question about elevator travel. Did you mechanically setup the elevator horns by the book, or did you move them closer inside for a little more aggression?
I set them up per the manual.
Halp , having ESC wornnig on my radio. Saying-" 13.5v 71.4a 102.2f". What i cam do ?
That’s related to the smart telemetry. When is that occurring? You probably just need to turn off the voice call.
Sorry to say, I love eflite but not the one’s with nose gear...field with grass and you can change the nose gear every 2 months...had the p39 and cost me more on nose gear then the plane itself
I understand that. I only ever fly from asphalt so haven’t experienced that personally.
Cool vid Mr Geek but the end was a little disturbing 👍🙂
Haha, thanks! Futurama is one of my all time favorite shows. 😆
that building stop motion thing must have been a bitch to do lmfao
It took a 10 minute assembly and turned it into 6+ hours. 🤣
@@Thercgeek lmfao not surprised, hope to get this plane myself soon!
Wish they would bring back the carbon t28 with lights brother. 👍🤙
That would be cool!
It is coming back late spring to early summer in a better than ever package.
@@johnsons74thsquadron74 is this hearsay or fact. Just wondering.
@@erinphillips7164 This is according to Eflite senior brand manager Jason Merkle.
@@johnsons74thsquadron74 cool beans thanks
Does it come with a battery and a charger?
This particular model does not come with the battery and charger. I have a link to my recommended battery. It can use a wide range of them.
Very NIIICE 🔥👍✌️
Would have liked to see a 1.5 meter with better retracts
That would be a nice size for sure.
Can u hand launch if u don't have luxury of a runway
I’ve never tried it, but with the power it has on 4s, it probably would do ok hand launching.
The only issue now is props I made folding prop on my v900 as every landing was broken prop at 8quid pop I got frustrated after 10th one and it worked but this will be challenging
Is a 4s 4000 mah battery to big?
I'm sure a 4000 would work just fine. There's lots of room in the fuselage.
T-28 Trojan 1.2metre V2
Cual es su velocidad máxima
At full throttle, the model is probably doing about 90mph (145kph)
I'm not a crook's head!
Could a complete beginner learn and fly this??
I do think this is a great option for learning on. I highly recommend getting plugged in with a club and seeking out some flight instruction for best success as a part of that though.
It rips on 6s 😂😂 . It definitely handles 6s just goes through the battery pretty quickly. 1800 fits , but just a hair tight.
Ha, nice! 😆
Oh yeah two blade 11×10 prop really scoots!!
Just STAY OUT OF THE RUDDER UNTIL THE GEAR IS UP OR DOWN !! Or it's gonna lock up..
Except that YOU DIDN”T follow up with a 3S review. Sure wish you had.
You’re right, I didn’t. Shortly after I put this together, we actually moved across the country, so I guess i lost track of it. Sorry about that!
HH forgot to beef up garbage retracts not so SMART
I agree buddy it's sad we are being forced to live in a world of computers and foam flavored women!!
I’d rather get the HK for a lot less $$ and has lights
Hey Geek ... nice video except for the fact that you connected the battery with the prop in your stomach and both arms exposed over the blades! Missed a perfect chance to explain Throttle Cut and reinforce some basic safety Rules ... Boooo!
Haha, I did that in one of my previous Cessna 150 review. 😉 th-cam.com/video/hn1nS8lbvic/w-d-xo.html
Another t28 ........a zero would of been nice
A zero would be cool!
Agreed. Think we have seen enough T28s. Please come out with something different E-Flite
Its a shame they discontinued the big one and its a shame they put that hideous yellow mouth on this one.
Well, rumor is the big one is coming back too. 😊
@@Thercgeek thats great news !!
