Yeelight "game-changing" MESH ceiling lights -with Bluetooth?! SLISAON Review [Xiaomify]

  • I have just installed a whole bunch of Yeelight downlights in my new apartment and I was pleasantly surprised. -Are these game-changing smart lights?
    Find the lights here on AliExpress: bit.ly/XMF_AE_YLDL
    Banggood: bit.ly/XMF_BG_YLDL
    GearBest: bit.ly/XMF_GB_YLDL
    Yeelight Flex switches on AliExpress: bit.ly/XMF_AE_YLS
    Xiaomi Flex Switch on AliExpress: bit.ly/XMF_AE_XLS
    The Yeelight downlights connect over Bluetooth, which needs to connect to a Bluetooth Gateway. -I have a tonne of Bluetooth gateways in my apartment so that was easy.
    A cool thing is that you could install a whole bunch of these lights at once through the APP. Which makes the installation of these lights a lot easier.
    Even though these are Bluetooth enabled lights, as they connect through a Bluetooth-Gateway, you can actually use them with automation rules, timers, and control them remotely when not being in proximity to the lights. So they really behave as you would have with WiFi lights. And, also, they consume a lot less power; which is good.
    What makes these lights even better is that they support Yeelight's "SLISAON" concept. So they work with the new Yeelight and Xiaomi Flex-switches. A very great benefit of using these light switches is that you can turn the lights off with the electrical light switch without the light going offline. And that is a huge step forward for smart lighting!
    'Normal' smart lights would go offline when turning them off with a light switch; making these lights no longer working with smart home automation rules and timers until they are powered on again. That is exactly the pain-point most people experience with smart lights; making them actually kinda dumb.
    I have had this scenario many times in the past; where my housekeeper, catsitter or visitors turn off lights using the wall-switch and thus making the lights no longer function with the motion sensors and door sensors in my apartment. So I am really happy with these new wall-switches that will keep the lights online; I really see this as a gamechanger!
    The lights 'only' have a brightness of 300 Lumens, in reality, this is really enough for this type of downlight. As you typically will have several of these mounted in your ceiling it will be brighter than you probably want to have. (I actually dim them to around 10% most of the time)
    I am very happy making the ceiling lights in my apartment actually smart!

    How does the new switch differ from the original aqara wired and wireless switch? They too have the always on feature.

    • @xiaomify
      @xiaomify  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not familiar with Aqara offering the always-on feature? -Do you happen to know the product code?
      I have several of the wired Aqara switches installed in my apartment, and theres some big differences. The Aqara switches connect over Zigbee to the HUB and this allows you to remotely control the switch. (Either from the APP or with automation rules...) This would be great for non-smart lights to turn them on/off remotely and integrate them into your smarthome environment.
      The Yeelight (and Xiaomi) switches don't have any (Zigbee, Bluetooth or WiFi) connection but (when set to 'flex switch') but, as far as I understand the concept, just shortly interrupts the power to the light when you use this switch, which is telling this light that it is being turned off using the light switch. -So technically the power is just interrupted shortly which the light sees as a command to turn on/off. The main functionality of this switch is actually in the light bulb itself rather than the light switch (as that just bounces back).
      I hope this helps :)

    Xiaomi make awesome equipment but they constantly fail to offer the EU the same level of device / server support on the vast majority of their smart devices. I've lost count of the amount of times I've purchased Xiaomi equipment only to find that it's not supported on EU servers.
    As a result the majority of Xiaomi's smart home equipment will mostly only work on Mainland China servers, meaning you will have major latency issues and delays between a command on your end like for example you flicking a smart light switch and the time it takes for that command to leave your property bounce over the internet to mainland China's servers and then back again to change the state of the relavent device such as a light bulb. (Latency, the sum of all delays).
    If you manage to establish and buy some EU server supported equipment and set your mi home app up within your chosen EU region and then randomly end up buying some Chinese only devices later on you will not even be able to see the Chinese stuff on your network until you revert the mi home app back to the mainland China region. The second you do that your EU supported Xiaomi device will then be unusable via the Xiaomi app unless you want to start resetting everything and starting again, you're effectively fucked unless you want to move the lot all on to Chinese servers.
    Also the second you set your Mi Home app to Mainland China region you do not have the same EU privacy or data protection terms, conditions, laws or policies that you would get if Xiaomi did officially provide official support for EU server across their smart range.
    When your mi home app to mainland China's servers, you're effectively agreeing to the same unknown terms, conditions, data protection, laws and privacy policies that mainland Chinese citizens are expected to obide by and who the fuck wants that?
    Theirs no real reason Xiaomi can't pull their finger out of their ass and offer us EU citizens proper server support with privacy and data protection terms, conditions and support that falls in line with EU laws, they simply can't be assed.
    My Mi Smart Gateway v3 turned up yesterday from China and guess what; I can't use it unless I switch region to mainland China, and the second I do that I lose access to my few EU supported devices.

    • @xiaomify
      @xiaomify  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Souk, I totally agree that the difference in the servers is really annoying. I personally am in China so I don't experience much of this (latency or problems with connection) but I feel that this is the number one complaint about the Xiaomi Smart Home Ecosystem from users outside of China. I do believe that I have heard that they would start adding support for ALL their products on the EU (and other) servers this year, but I am not sure IF and when that will happen.
      --> In their defense: they can always argue that these products are meant to be sold on the Chinese market only and are solely sold by 'unauthorized' resellers on websites like AliExpress, etc... But as a way of appreciating 'early adopters' outside of China, I personally feel that they should add compatibility for all of the products on all of the servers.
      As a side note, I have tried a few things on the EU server on my main Xiaomi account. If I revert the location back to China in the APP, all my devices are still there and working. If I then switch back to the EU server again, it still lists all my connected devices on that server as well. So, even though it's still a huge pain in the ass to be switching servers, it should actually still list those devices on that specific server.
      Nonetheless, I do feel your pain, and I really hope this is something that will be looked into in the near future. I don't have THAT great of a contact with (or influence on) Xiaomi to make this happen, but I will make sure to mention this whenever I get to talk to them and hopefully someone will take action.
      For now, I always just always advise anyone outside of China to always use the CN mainland server, but I do understand your arguments and can't argue with what you're saying, at all. Hopefully, this will be looked into sometimes soon. -I might even consider to do a video about this, to give this issue some more attention :)

    • @Timberjagi
      @Timberjagi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      personally i think you have some issue with your internet connection... i have several houses with Xiaomi lights and i don't have any latency. or just reprogram them and build your own network using only the hardware with your own software

    I was about to give it a go, but the major drawback of these fixtures (or Xiaomi for that matter) that they can't give you enough brightness. For me, 300Lm is not enough. They should consider a variety of wattage so that we can choose among them. For that reason, I bought fixture 7watts that give me 770 lumens so that my ceiling won't dotted with the lamps.

      The Aqara light switches connect over Zigbee to a Zigbee hub (Xiaomi gateway, Aqara gateway, etc) and they can be controlled using the APP. That means you can cut off the electricity using the Mi Home APP and Siri, etc.. When using this light switch with a regular smart light bulb it will still totally disconnect the bulb when the switch is turned off. I would say that these Aqara wall switches are great when you have non-smart lights and you don't want (or can't) to replace them with smart lights /yet you want to be able to make them smart...
      The Yeelight switches have a function that basically disconnects the power for a second to the light bulb so it will 'know' it is being turned off using the switch and will remain to be online in the APP. This only works with a number of supported lights (like the ones I reviewed and then some...) but they allow you to use the light switch as well as the APP and they will not be disconnected.
      It's kinda hard to easily explain in a short message, but I hope this helps!

      @@xiaomify yap. Kind of get it thanks. Good to have a aqara switch (wired) videos. And sprinkle some yeelight switch vs aqara switch in it. 😁

      I think Zigbee Aqara Wall switches is better for you. Just get a zigbee hub (normal hub), replace traditional switch you Zigbee switch, then your dumb light can be controlled via the app

    Yeelight: "Hi, I'm a smart light. I don't need a switch to be turned on!"
    Also Yeelight: "Here a switch for you so people can turn you on/off."

      Well yeah, the point of a new product is to not remove functionality, just add it, that's why switches are still good, because sometimes you just don't want to ask a smart assistant or have an automation to turn it on, sometimes you are just there on the switch and you want to click it.

    Hi thanks for your video!
    May I check if I could connect these yee light downlights & the switches with the XiaoAi Speaker Pro, since it’s equipped with the Bluetooth mesh gateway technology too? Without buying an additional gateway? :) Does it work that way?
