Excellent interview! I just would like to ask to reduce the frequency of the 'subscribe' sounds and animation because it is really distracting to focus on what Thor is saying.

Thanks for the advice! This isn’t the full interview it’s just a clip from the interview (the only time we put the sub button on). I’ll make a note to turn down the SFX for future clips!

I used to have a glide cam but it got stolen on a gig. There is a very large learning curve with just being able to set it up to be balanced. And as soon as you change your lens the entire balance gets thrown off... or even if you just flip open your lcd screen... it will have to be re-balanced. Honestly it was a pain to use.

back in the day when I used my own diy steadicam and then the came 150 (like a glidecam) I only used a wide angle lens on the stabilizer. I didn't care for having shallow depth of field so changing lenses wasn't an issue for me. Once my stabilizer was balanced it was just buttery smooth.

Almost stopped watching because of the intrusive bell notification overlays and sounds. This tends to put people off subscribing.
That being said, the content itself was very good and helpful!

Thanks for the feedback! I think in later episodes we adjusted the volume but I’ll make a note to tweak even more. Full episodes have no bell sfx in them btw

What are your thoughts on gimbals on steadicams?

Guys stop I operate both the Gimbal and Steadicam each has its advantages, but to the bobbling, It comes down to practice and proficience

This is some real commentary. But my opinion is this. I own a Ronin and have sort of a Love/Hate relationship due to the technology being so new. But I understand once you can get the technology of the Arri's, Red's, Panivisions, etc those big cameras with their incredible iso levels and large data files into a size of a sony a6500.... the Steadicam will be obsolete. I can already move the camera attached to the gimbal without touching it. Is that not impressive? What I'm saying is Once the technology of gimbals becomes more dedicated to learning the sophisticated types of human responses, then the true nuance will be in the creator's hands. This is where the industry is going. This is where the magic happens in the near future. When technology takes the creative choices, green-lit decisions, and politics out of the hands of the label heads, Major Production studios, A&R's, Producers, you understand, this then allows for the natural order to empower the would-be amateur director/filmmaker to create as if he has the $10k-100k budget. 30 years to evolve the Steadicam into what It is today? Really? So I'm less impressed with the Steadicam, cars are literally driving people to work today. The real question is why is Hollywood/Mainstream media moving like snails with their technology advancement? Like Thor said these two are not the same an indeed serve different purposes. One maintains order through cost, weight, maintenance, access, and inopportune skill sets. The other aims to free you from all those incapabilities.

I think Thor explains this well. These are different tools for different jobs. Gimbals make loads of sense for lots of things, there's not much sense putting a Steadicam on a car these days because a gimbal can do a better job of that. However as he mentioned in the video, gimbals don't stabilise for up/down movement well at all. The steadicam is almost totally engineered to remove the footsteps of the operator and the beauty of it is that it does it mechanically, without power and silently.
Apart from anything else, Steadicam was designed for long shoots on movie sets. Operators need a vest to properly distribute the weight, and the Steadicam vest does this well. So this was adapted by gimbal operators who used an EasyRig to support the weight on their back. Which ultimately reduces the flexability of the gimbal and adds a lot of money to the equipment (those back supports are weirdly expensive).
There are plenty of examples of gimbals being used in movies, take a look at the behind the scenes for Marvel movies (I think Guardians 2 is one example). You'll see a lot of gimbal shots that are remote controlled and the rig is carried on a bar by two stage hands. Again, it works beautifully, but you then have an operator sitting remotely and two dudes lugging the thing around.
Is that really better than a steadicam? It works for some shots, less so for others.
The future, I suspect, is likely a hybrid. Both Tiffen and Arri have equipment that marries a gimbal with a Steadicam arm and vest. You get load of control, and less of an emphasis on the operator knowing the quirks of a Steadicam.
And to answer your ultimate point - why not adapt? Because film is an artform. There's a reason Tarantino and Nolan don't shoot on digital - artistic choice. Steadicams still have something that's not just a matter of it being the "best" tool.

actually was enjoying listening to the guy talk, and that fuckin bell sound is unruly to have to cope with every 2 minutes, more over, just stressful and far less likely to engage in someone subscribing. If you've removed it since this video, we all thank you.
